Zanzibar was clean and the atmosphere was very nice. My husband and I ordered the fried green tomatoes and soul rolls for our appetizers. The fried green tomatoes was great - I loved the batter that it was made in. The rolls were okay but my palate is finicky. My husband said he enjoyed the soul rolls more than the tomatoes. For my entree I had the honey glazed chicken; which in my opinion was a lot for one person. My sides were mac & cheese and yams. The entire entree was very delicious! All was cooked to perfection! For my drink I had the lemonade kool-aid; it was not to my liking. I’m not sure if it’s because I haven’t had kool-aid in years but it tasted very different from what I remembered kool-aid to taste like. Perfectly sweetened though. We also ordered peach cobbler and bread pudding. I only had the cobbler and it too was very delicious. My husband said the bread pudding was good. This was our first visit to Cleveland & Zanzibar and it won’t be our last. My overall experience has been great. Not to mention how nice and welcoming our server, Suzette, was. Thank you Zanzibar for the hospitality and a great first experience.
If your in downtown Cleveland and looking for some Great Soul Food, Zanzibar is your go to place. The Food, Staff, and Atmosphere is fantastic, and is the menu options are excellent. Zanzibar is within walking distance of most major attractions downtown also, so dont miss this excellent dinning opportunity if your in the area. 😁 and thanks Suzette for the excellent suggestions, and service tonight.
This place was awesome, me and my family decided that we would eat there because the food looked so good. Me and my brother had the Boneless Grilled Chicken Breast, with rice and baked macaroni & cheese. The meal was served hot and fresh, it was presented amazingly, and tasted amazing. I would recommend this place to anyone in Cleveland Ohio!
My friend treated me here for my birthday. When I say top notch A-1 service! I mean they knew who I was and had my table ready before I could even figure out what was going on! The staff all the way from the manager, the host, the cook, even the dishwasher came to wish me a Happy birthday! Zanzibar made me feel welcome like family. And lets not forget how great the food is. Large portions and presented in a high class culinary manner. Im adding this spot to my favorites list!!
This was a chicken salad from Zanzibars, the downtown location. I would not have had a problem with it if this was only $6 maybe $8. This salad was $13.50....FOR REAL???? AND.....AND I HAD TO ADD THE CHEESE AND ONIONS ( with little of both) which brought it to $14.50. Maybe if I would have eaten in and not taken it out it would have been better because it would have been bigger(who knows)......But I know I can not eat here for lunch anymore......THIS WAS DEFINITELY NOT WORTH THE MONEY AT ALL....It at least could have been the best chicken salad that I have ever had and that could have explained the price. BUT it definitely was NOT.....
I was in town for a concert and my friend and I had scouted out where we wanted to eat. We were so excited to try Zanzibar, especially after looking at pictures. Unfortunately, we didnt even get to order. We came to the restaurant around 6pm and there were only 2 tables sat and a few couples at the bar. We waited at the front and no one came to greet us, so we decided to take a few seats at the bar and wait for the bartender. After 10 minutes we were finally greeted but it was not friendly. The bartender said nothing except, Did you seat yourselves? and we said yes. She sighed and walked away. After about 10 more minutes someone finally brought us menus and then the bartender came back and asked, What do you want? My friend and I were caught so off-guard. If it was a problem where we sat, she could have told us. I would have been fine sitting anywhere, but no one even cared we were there. After the rudest 25 minutes Ive ever spent in a restaurant we decided to go somewhere else. I could not believe how we were treated. Very, very disappointing.
Susan the GM was very hospitable. She made us feel as though we were at home. She is by far the best GM I have encountered. Crystal our server was on point. She has great customer service. We will return to this location the next time we are in Cleveland.Fayonna Forrest South Bend, IN
If I could give this place a -0.... I would. Went here after a Cavs game. Sat down ordered drinks and food. After a half hour we finally got water. After an hour we still hadnt received drinks or our food. All the while our waitress was waiting hand and foot on the tables all around us. Nothing like the Shaker Heights location. This was the worst restaurant experience Ive ever had!
I eat a plant-based diet and I had the veggie platter and it was amazing. I doubled up on the beans and rice. The cook who brought the food out even offered me a complimentary order of the candied yams. Outstanding service from our waitress, love from the cook, good price, and most of all a wonderful meal!
Went in with a group of colleagues tonight. Was blown away by the food taste and quality. Didnt have anything that I wouldnt try again. Currently feel like Im in a food coma. I couldnt stop eating, not to mention the service was incredible with a nice laid back atmosphere.
I was on a diet anyway so I shouldn’t have even stopped here but I had such good experiences at the other location so I knew it would be worth the sacrifice, but it was not. We waited in a half empty establishment for atleast 15 minutes before being seated. Watched others come in and go straight to the bar and ordered after we were told it was better for us to wait for a table. Finally ordered the food just to have it dried up and lukewarm. We ordered the soul rolls (which I usually love) and it was the driest unappetizing appetizer, the chicken was dry and not hot, macaroni stale and crusted, the only thing that looked presentable was the yams. There was no hand sanitizer on site and waiters were hard to get a hold of even though there were a lot around all taking to each other. I felt rushed and the food was beyond disappointed, not to mention there was no music at all so the atmosphere was behind bland and uninviting.
Food looked good but looks were deceiving. It wasnt horrible but it wasnt wonderful. Horrible. Awful!!! Disgusting service!!!! My server was friendly but there was a lady there who looked like she hated her job. Seemed to be a big boss. There were staff taking shots while on the clock in front of us!!!!. Slowwwwwwwwww Service. Ordered food and never got it. Most of the staff were trying to be helpful and pleasant. But others werent. I WILL NEVER RETURN
The food is amazing! But the service could be a bit better. My partner and I went on a Saturday afternoon and it took over 15 minutes to be seated and we were the only people waiting. The waitress was ok, kind of forgot about us a few times. But the food makes up for a lot of the not so great service.
Visit from Chicago. 1st l-Salmon croquettes were moist, the sauce was tasty. The greens a lil sweet 4 me. The fried green tomatoes could be dressed up a little better. Add some sliced green onions & thinly sliced sauted red or green cabbage on top to serve. They looked lonely. The rice was delicious! The waitress/bartender was amazing, professional & very friendly. Tip her well. She worked the bar & make the best mojitos!!!
Im just speechless.... Please eat here.... Youll be forever changed....I take back this. I recently went to downtown location and was treated bad waiting to place a to go order. The guy had me standing waiting to place an order for 10 minutes but told a gentleman he could be seated while someone comes to take his to go order. I left with people angry looking at how I was treated and Im new here. I ended up driving to the other location other than downtown and was treated much better and the scenery and the customer service much better. I will never eat at downtown location again😡😡😡
My bartender was Dominique was great her drinks were amazing but our food came back old and overcooked and it looked like it had been sitting out we got salads with no dressing and overall it was just not the best experience but at least we have somebody nice to keep us company
Me and my boyfriend went to eat here yesterday 03/04/22 and it was the worst experience I’ve ever had. First of all they kept forgetting about us, we went through 3 different people as our server, and our most consistent one seemed to be intoxicated. They kept forgetting our food, and it was COLD. We even felt a little sick after trying to eat it. It was beyond terrible, wouldn’t recomend it to anyone. -300/10
My nearest Zanzibar is the 1 located E. 200th st in Euclid. I wanted to plan a dinner date from that location on a saturday and proceeded to order online from there. The online menu was totally unavailable, so I proceeded to call the restaurant and place an order. When I called(several times that day) then phone number went directly to voicemail.Frustrated, I picked my 2nd nearest location, which was downtown, and placed a 60 dollar order, 2 hours in advance. My date and I went to pick the order up at the time specified. She waited in the car out in front of the location on Prospect, as there was an event going on downtown. Parking was limited and we expected to be in an out within minutes, or hopefully seconds. When I went in, the young man couldnt find my order twice. A 3rd time, he said that they were bagging it up. All in total, I waited 15 minutes in the restaurant waiting for my order. The manager noticed me waiting, asked about the situation, had the kitchen staff put a rush on completing my order, gave me a discount, and even offered me a drink.I commend the female manager with the short blonde hair and thank her for her professionalism. The Euclid location was very inconveniencing and needs to get their act together. The food from downtown was very delicious.I thank the downtown manager again. Just wish the food would have been ready on time, considering that I pre-ordered 2 hours in advance. One time at the Euclid location, I ordered take out, and returned home, only to discover that I was served dry burnt, probably the last of the pan, macaroni.Once again.. The Euclid location has major issues in my opinion.
Zanzibar’s food = flavorous and delectable. The menu features some of the best southern inspired dishes you can find, from the fried catfish to the bbq baked salmon (both pictured below). The alcohol options are a range of fragrance and it’s a great idea to grab a drink, sit back and enjoy the r&b soundtrack to embellish your experience there. The service is always A1, the interior is 2nd to none, and the location is ideal. You can grab some dinner then hit the Corner Alley or catch a concert right on the next street. Did I mention it is BLACK OWNED 🙌🏾👏🏾. You don’t want to miss out on this! 🤤💦
Ive never had soul food until I went to Zanzibar Soul Fusion. I must say that I wish I had tried it sooner. Being from Toronto, there are not many soul food joints in my city. This place is absolutely amazing. The staff were so friendly and patient. The food was flavorful and juicy and just amazing. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this place and will definitely be back with my wife for sure. The restaurant is also really clean and the layout and decor is really nice. A must try on the menu is the fried chicken (obviously) and also their soul rolls. Wish I took some home over the border. 5 stars easy.
I’m literally disgusted in the treatment I experienced on my birthday weekend. I came from Pittsburgh, to Cleveland, Ohio; walked all the way to zanzabar from my hotel, just because it was a nice day and fiqured I didn’t need to drive. Before we could get in the door, a lady with blonde extremly short like shaved hair! (I’m being specific because she’s the one with terrible customer service!) said “I’m closing! To regroup! Y’all can go to my other location and walked away! So all the people that I know that was waiting for my review, because I travel alot and I do reviews and recommendations, I don’t recommend you go, unless you call or don’t mind being randomly turned down. It was the location on prospect, so if you go, just make sure it’s not that location. If I find out she is the owner, I’m not going to any location ever!I own two business , I almost never bash black owned businesses, But I can’t accept the fact that she couldn’t even say sorry, say where the other location is or anything! It was so rude that I can’t help it .Plus I’m from out of town, and I’m celebrating my birthday! No matter what you’re going through, you can always just apologize, and try to help the situation, if she just said I’m sorry, recommended the other location in a nice, professional way, I would of just went there, without this review!
Mmmmmmm-mmmmmm...tough to say anything else after our experience at Zanzibar. We stopped for an evening app and cocktail and had a mind-blowing experience with drinks, food, and hospitality! A couple of must gets are the soul rolls and the jerk wings, without a doubt. It was so good that we had to stop for lunch the next day and it was an A+ again. Thank you Zanzibar downtown for an experience and satisfaction we will remember and share with many!
I use to love Zanzibar but this was by far the worst porkchop I have ever had in my life. I’ve never left a review before but this crossed the line. I had to spit it out becuase it was so dry it was honestly hard to chew. These look like the pork chops from dollar tree. My boyfriend got chicken and his was super dry also. The sides were good and the soul rolls were good but the main part of the dish is the meat and it wasn’t even edible. $75 to not even be able to eat it. Very disappointed.
Ive been here twice. Service is a little slow because the staff is at times overwhelmed. The Soul Rolls are my favorite item on the list and are packed with flavor. But the shrimp and girts, on the other hand, prove that Northerners dont know how to make them. These grits had lumps in them and the shrimp tasted boiled. When I make them, I boil grits in half and half and chicken broth and season the liquid as its boiling. I then place butter and cheddar cheese in the grits (cheese comes towards the end or mid-way). With the shrimp, I fry them in bacon grease and add white wine while they fry. I sometimes make my own white sauce, but thats optional.
This was my 1st time here. Very chill atmosphere. The bartender let me try a drink I saw across the bar. I actually ordered it cuz it was so good! Then I had the soul rolls. OMG!! Delicious! Thanks for having the vegan option. My entre was the shrimp pasta. It was really flavorful. Will definitely go back.
I bought some soul rolls, jerk wings and a salmon dinner last night and it was delivered through door dash. I only ate the soul rolls and one jerk wing. A few hours later I felt sick and had diarrhea and was throwing up. I knew it was food poisoning cause I haven’t had anything but the food I had just ate. I have been cooking at home and not going out to eat for long while. I just had taste for the soul rolls which are normally good but I think I’ll stick with cooking at home like I normally do. I hope the food that was delivered to me was not old but who knows it may have been, I definitely got sick.
Waited over an hour to receive my food with delivery and the whole order was incorrect, I received another persons order. I was very upset especially because this is a black owned restaurant! please start checking and confirming food and drink items!! This is not the first time having a bad experience with this restaurant. I WILL NOT BE COMING BACK EVER.
Yesterday we dined here for dinner and the service was superb! We were celebrating my daughter’s 18th birthday and she has heard about it, but never been. The staff went above and beyond for our party. I was able to even witness the interaction of other patrons and was pleased to see how that same service was extended. The food was DELICIOUS!!!!! Thank You so very much for taking care of us and making my daughters experience a GREAT memory!!!!!!!!!
Our experience was AMAZING. We had a little wait, because they were busy(which is good)… however, Susan the GM continued to let us know that she had NOT forgotten about us and would seat us immediately upon a table becoming available. She was busy with others yet very present with us. This is not the easiest task but she executed it most excellently. Then, we sat at the bar and had Veronica as a server and she was extremely funny, attentive and pleasant! The food came out 10-12 minutes after ordering and it was HOT AND FRESH! GREAT southern food and hospitality! Enjoyed thoroughly!
So thing with soul food is, depending on where you’re from influences how you like your food cooked. From my perspective as an Atlantan, the yams were good and so was the mac and cheese. The mac and cheese does have egg in it (how I like it) and is not super creamy like other variations. My issue was the pork chops. There was hardly any crust on them (if at all). They looked like they were fried without a batter. And I couldn’t taste any seasoning. The peach cobbler was perfect. Just the right amount of crust, plenty of peaches and spiced well. The corn muffins were on the sweet side. One of them was blueberry flavored. Nice little change up.
I was very disappointed. The menu looked good, but when I got there it was a different story. The wait time was long, the floor was sticky and our table was wet.The food took forever and when it arrived it wasnt very good. Some of our chicken undercooked and the grits was watery. One meal took almost an hour to come out after the rest and they even forgot to include some of the sides when it arrived. The experience wasnt what I expected or hope for, but the waitress was a gem and genuinely apologetic.Perhaps I went on a bad day, but if my experience is indicative of how the restaurant usually is I would not recommend. 😬
First time ever writing a review about a restaurant. It was the worst restaurant experience I had. I would not go back to Zanzibar Downtown. I wish I can rate it a 0 instead of 1.I took my family there for a birthday dinner and they told us that it will be a 45 minute wait so we waited for 45 minutes. I went to the hostess and I said we waited over 45 minutes which was 1 hour and 15 minutes at this point.. I ask was our table ready yet..she told me that they are understaffed and they don’t have any tables available and have to wait for a customer to leave the table. So 5 minutes later, the hostess says to us a table is available but it would be a 30-45 wait to order our food because it understaff with cooks as well. So, we waited over an hour and then have to wait again after being seated to get our food after we order. I’m out.During the time we was waiting the staff was yelling at each other and it was so disorganized and unprofessional to do that in front of customers. We should of left sooner. We end up going to the other Zanzibar in Euclid which was the best experience.
Sunday, after church, we ordered 3 dinners and appetizers to carry out. We were quoted a 20 minute wait to pick up our food. 25 minutes later, when I arrived at the restaurant, they told me it would be another 5 to 10 minutes. 20 minutes later, when I asked about my order, I was told another 5 -10 minutes. I told the employee I was quoted 5-10 minutes, 20 minutes ago. Another employee said my order was coming right out. 8 minutes later, it came out. The bagger dropped the salad dressing, said he was going to replace it. When I saw him carrying a tray of drinks, I asked about the dressing. He said he was going to get another one, so I left after waiting an hour after being quoted 20 minutes.I am a retail manager. I understand being understaffed. Why was the staffing, and number of patrons in the restaurant not considered when they quoted my wait time? If I had been told an hour wait, I would not have been as disappointed with my experience. After a 40 minute wait over a 20 minute quote, AND we were missing 3 sides (the sides were not included for one of the meals, and we ordered an extra side). Zanzibar added a $20 tip to our bill but we did not get $15 of sides that we paid for. The restaurant owes my family a $15 credit for the sides they did not include.
The scenery was beautiful, we were in a private area wish I wasnt pressed for time because it took a long time before food arrived glad I got an appetizer. Dont think they were prepared for such a large party even tho they shouldve been. It was ok would I go back no I rather door dash.
Me and my group of nine people drove an hour to Cleveland to get Zanzibar. We were rudely told we have an hour wait, which was fine. So we decided to get drinks from the bar and the manager rudely told us we had to wait for drinks as well. After an hour passes we go back inside. We were told they do not have the staff to accommodate our party of 9. So we offered to even be split up at 3 different tables and still were refused service. Very horrible experience. Wont even try again.
Walked past this place in the morning after a, uh, rough night and decided to head into this place on a whim. Chicken and waffles sounded like perfection and thats exactly what I ordered. Very happy I did, the chicken was cooked to perfection. Fantastic, flavorful batter on wonderfully tender chicken. Only problem I had were with the waffles that seemed to be a bit too doughy or undercooked. If they had been a bit crispier I would have been completely satisfied, still very good!
Hello, on November 27, 2021 at 8:15 PM at your downtown location we were rudely approached by your front desk hostess, a wide, white lady with brown hair who asked me what did I want? I was taken aback by her question as I responded, isnt this a restaurant? If so, we would like to have dinner. She started to seat us, then had a brief conversation with another employee, tall, slender African American lady with gold hair, who abruptly said, we are closing soon and we cannot seat your party. The service was terrible as the night before my party had an amazing dinner at the Zanzibar restaurant in Shaker Heights. Wow, what a stark difference in hospitality and customer service. I am very disappointed with the way that my party and I were treated and I am sure that the owners of the restaurant do not carry themselves in such an offensive manner. Rude is an understatement. Customer service and respect is always expected.
Seriously outstanding food. The staff was wonderful, helpful, and so friendly. The house potatoes are to die for! We were greeted by Danielle at the hostess stand. She was friendly and professional. Susan, the manager was friendly and checked on us. Must try the soul rolls. So good! Menu was priced well, everything was seasoned and well balanced. Well be back!
I am usually a fan of Zanzibar when I come to Cleveland, however my experience this go round I was disappointed. My fish was undercooked, I ordered pork chops and I think they were turkey, my husband spit out the greens. The Macoroni was delicious and the smothered steak was ok. The gravy just didnt taste homemade. Everyone has a bad day, so I will try again. 1 bad visit doesnt disqualify my 3 good visits.
Dropped in from New York, hit this spot on the way out and from the food to the service...ABSOLUTELY ON POINT. I eat out daily and for awhile now it has been one disappointment after another. Looking for Michael Symons place, couldnt even find it, smh but found this gem. Today you have alot people, politicians and resteraunts that over promise and under deliver. This place said nothing, but the service and the food preached fire. Wont be disappointed.
It was lousy we went on President Day the the service was horrible the manager/owner had an attitude walking around with an attitude the bar area was not clean it just looked like they was just tired from the all-star weekend their faces waited 2 hours to get Kool-Aid never received the appetizer it was my first time and it was not a good visit the person I was with they have been there numerous of times all I know is they need to step it up then she let everyone hear the manager let everyone hear that she didnt have a prep person that was just all the way unprofessional I hope they step their game up I really do
Highly not satisfied walk in door at 8:55 they close at 10 we waited for a moment she asked about drink bartender since that was where we were sitting since they had no more seats available so that was fine but she took over 20 minutes just to bring out one drink that was just red and grape lol-aid then we had ordered sometime we ordered kool-aid order was put in at 9:10 exact we are still waiting for our food an hour later bartender apologized but how long will we sit waiting over an hour and no one is here except 3 tables and 1 other couple at the bar. Very upset waiting so long. Finally just received food at 10:15 and it is cold like I picked my entire plate up plus my friends cold. The couple next to us stated the samething I understand they are short staffed but to ever serve someone cold food after waiting an hour not acceptable at all. Not very pleased manager stated she would compensate us but honestly just want a refund less than 30 dollars a piece but I’m not okay. I would like to try again but during these certain times seems like a no. Highly dissatisfied. Communicating with someone is first we asked for our food to be reheated by the manger we were hungry very hungry and she instead took it and remade it instead of heating it up we were ready to go we didn’t want her to remake the food we sat here over and hour and still haven’t ate. They bring food back and now it’s hot but now I don’t have all my food just over it highly dissatisfied want a refund that is eat I don’t want to eat it anymore
OMG...Hubby & I plus R Ruff Ryder Fam went tonight to Celebrate our 20 yr wedding anniversary....and it was our 1st time going. The service was GREAT & the food GREAT along with the STAFF was GREAT. We most definitely plan on going back. Also thanks to the Gentleman whose 1st night it was....you were a blessing in your Job...bcuz when I needed my window cleaned you were on it with not 1 compliant. We ❤❤💙💙 this place. Ruff Ryders plan on bring you business asap.
The food was cold and the Manager wasnt friendly at all. I ordered Smothered Pork Chops i had received fried Pork Chop with no breading. The Server Calvin saved what he could... As a restaurant owner myself we have to do Better with our service and quality of Food...
Do not go here I repeat do not go here. Hopefully a different location is better than this one. AWFUL service. Got there at a little after 7pm, was told by waitress or hostess not super sure what her title was that she had to go talk to her manager because we had a party of 8. Manager said a wait of 30 minutes. Okay that’s fine. One hour plus we are still waiting, there are tables open and I go find the manager and she states oh I’ll get a table for you right now…then gets a table for four ready. Awful. Multiple people in our party did not get the correct order. We had a toddler with us and they place us at a high top table. Made the mistake of staying after the hour wait, let’s just say the food was not well worth the I wait. If I could give this place negative stars I would.
Once again the customer service at this location was hospitable and superb. I was not disappointed. The staff were friendly and very attentive. I was personally greeted by the GM Susan and she was just as amazing as her staff. The training and care definitively shows through their service. And of course the food was delicious as well! I highly recommend having an experience here.
Food was excellent. Service was just ok. One of our party didn’t get their food with everyone else and it took the waiter a while to come out to check on us. But, we asked to sit outside where no one else was, so I think the blame was mostly ours. Our waiter was super nice and engaging, just spread thin since we made him come outside to wait on us. Everything we ordered was fantastic other than the soul rolls which were just ok. We will definitely stop again.
My family and I were visiting from Florida and wanted some great soul food. Let me tell you they did not disappoint! What stood out the most for me were the soul food egg rolls. They were delicious! If we could have tried everything on the menu we would. The service was great and everyone is really friendly. I loved the atmosphere. I would definitely go again!
Everything was delicious. The soul rolls and jerk chicken wings were delicious. The honey fried chicken, salmon, Mac and cheese and house potatoes were extra tasty. The Downtown location was awesome especially their manager , she was exceptional, because I came in close to closing time she really took care of me. No shrimp and grits, (they were out)but still worth it.
Stumbled upon this place while walking from dinner the night before. Great soul food brunch on Sunday. The grits were amazing as well as my veggie omelet. My hubby had the stuffed french toast and a friend had the breakfast sandwich. All meals were delectable and plates were cleaned when we finished. Not giving 5 stars due to the coffee not being hot when brought to the table and they ran out of drop biscuits. I can understand running out of something but lukewarm coffee I cannot. But thanks Zanzibar for some great food! We will return and allow you to make up for the coffee and for us to try the biscuits.
Was there Saturday evening for granddaughters birthday celebration. Was told upon arrival it was a 1.5 hour wait, there were 2 groups ahead of us. As we thought if we should wait the hostess sat one of the two groups. Decided we would wait since there was now only one group ahead of us. Well it did still take an 1.5 hour to get seated, which was now 9:00 and most customers were gone. Put in order for appetizers and drinks, were starving at this point, drinks came out but no appetizers. Another hour wait for food. Appetizers came out with our food. Over half of the employees were not wearing their masks including the manager, masks were under their chins. The server bringing out food and no mask, but you have a sign on your door saying you must wear a mask. Had nice portions of food but there were more stems in the greens than greens. Not a good experience at all. Might have given a second chance, but not with the employees wearing their masks under their chins.
Food wasnt hot waited for my drink a long time ...then it came with my food. Had to ask for a fork and napkins.only saw our watier twice. asked for well done chicken didnt get it well done 👎 and the quevo had too much lime juice Im very dissatisfied being it was my first time and maybe last. soul rolls was good probably even better if it was hot
Service was decent. Drinks were watered down. Kool aide drinks TOO much sugar. Shrimp and grits horrible. Steak and gravy even worse. Actually ALL THE FOOD WAS NON EDIBLE, EITHER OVER COOK, UNDER COOKED OR OLD. We were a party of 15. Only 2 people enjoyed their food. They had soul rolls and jerk chicken🤔🤔🤔
The FOOD was amazing I’m not going to deny that! But the service was horrible yesterday. It took over an hour to be seated, we received our appetizers but our food took just about a hour to come. People were eating before us and came after us. The server was nice but we never got to eat. We had to take our food to go after getting there at 6:30 and not leaving until 9:50!
My team had a big project and we needed to order a big lunch the crew & staff at studio. It was ready on time. Hot & fresh and smelled SO good I could hardly wait. The flavor of the shrimp & grits was amazing & I love the Sunset!! Zanzibar just made working through the weekend so good!
I waited at the bar for 20 minutes before a server acknowledged me. I ordered the honey glazed chicken, when the entree was bought to the bar, I was advised the glaze was separate and waited over 30 minutes for that glaze before I returned the chicken and cashed out.
Me and my girls had planned to meet up here Saturday...Without thinking about the now limited seating. The wait was gonna be over an 1.5 hours. so we asked could we sit at the bar until something became available. We decided we would just remain at the bar...The manager came over and told us she would allow us to use the private room...That was so accommodating for the 10 of us. She got it ready for us in less than 10 mins. That was so nice of her. Everybody was super nice from the barmaid to the guy that brought out our food. Our server Calvin was by far THE BEST... He was fun and energetic and knew what he was doing. The food was good the environment was everything. I really appreciated all that the staff did for us...and the birthday girl was extremely happy....We all will be returning soon. Thanks again..
Weve made several trips to Cleveland for medical appointments and stop in Zanzibar everytime. Weve yet to find something we dont like on the menu but our favorites have to be the soulful pasta, wings, soul rolls, and the local brew. The staff is amazing and treat us like family. Susan is always welcoming and sweet.
Let’s start with the atmosphere......simply amazing with an intimate vibe. The lights are slightly dim which is inviting for an intimate date. The employees did great during a pandemic. They were a little understaffed but they made it happen fir my date and I. Soul rolls-delicious. I can snack on these alone. No entree necessary. Chicken wing dinner and fried fish were to DIE for. The drinks were also amazing with a fresh taste. Highly recommend and will return again.
The waiter was excellent. The food was delicious. I do recommend this place for any occasion. The place was clean, I felt like I was at home. Such a warm atmosphere. The Host who welcomed us all in was fantastic. I think his name was Nate or maybe Nathaniel. Anyway I would go back there for the Red Carpet treatment my family and I recieved.
Horrible food was old bathrooms filthy koolaid? Some sugary drink in mason jars will give y hart?attacks soul roll was stuffed w under cooked greens that taste very old now dn town location i went to anniversary dinner every one had a problem w cold food server took for ever to come we talking 20 guest for this party was my last w them food quality is not worth it or environment they need to close all of well the s squar and d town location are jokes nasty ones at that rest room at s square will make you not want to eat there.
This establishment does not deserve a star. Unprofessional, and careless staff. We came in to dine 45 min before close, and we’re told that we could not sit and eat or order carry out. I’m a downtown resident, and many other restaurants are more than happy to welcome guest/business. Hours should be adjusted appropriately, this was not the first occurrence.
Stopped in from out of town and even though they were short-staffed and were no longer taking dine-in, the fabulous (and I do mean fabulous from head to toe) manager seated us at the bar and allowed us to eat there. What made it even better was the food. It was delicious. The food was cooked to perfection. Even though the manager was busy, she made sure to check on us frequently. Thats good customer service! I will so be coming back here when I am in town.
After the bad experience I had listen below, their customer service reached out to me. They were very kind and understanding and offered me a gift card in hopes of me giving the restaurant a second chance. I am extremely impressed with their customer service and they are the reason I gave Zanzibar a second chance.I ordered takeout in person this time and the experience was very pleasant. Susan was the manager on duty. She was so kind and likeable and to be honest, was the main reason why my rating went up so much. She mentioned how hard of a time the restaurant was having due to people quitting and not showing up for work. Even though she was by herself and decently busy, she still got to me in a reasonable amount of time! She was greeting guests right when they walked in and took care of her in store customers efficiently. SUSAN DESERVES A RAISE!The only reason my rating was not changed to a 5 star is because the food did take awhile, which I’m sure is credited to the lack of employees.Food was delicious and I will defiantly be going back!————————————————————————————I have no doubt that the food is amazing but unfortunately I did not have a chance to try it out because their delivery for doordash kept canceling on me.I work in the restaurant industry so I assumed either they were really busy and had the delivery services not accepting orders or perhaps I was ordering something that was out of stock. So, I called down to make sure they were still accepting delivery. When I called the worker seemed rushed and like he didn’t have time for me. I wasn’t upset by this because I again assumed they were busy. He did confirm that they were still accepting orders through doordash.Once again I tried to place my order through door dash and it immediately got canceled again. At this point I assumed perhaps they were out of something that I was trying to order. So I called back it made them aware that I have tried to place an order twice now and it had gotten canceled each time. I asked if they were out of anything or if I should order off of a different delivery service and the only answer I got was “no we’re still doing delivery”. I then asked him if I should try placing it through door dash again or using a different delivery service. He didn’t answer, and at this point I heard him speaking to another customer. I understand that when working take out you could multitask like that so I waited for him to come back on the phone to help me but that never happened. I just kept hearing background restaurant noise and then eventually he hung up on me.I was so excited to try this food after hearing such great things about it but after this experience I don’t honestly know if I would even attempt to order from you guys in the future. The whole situation was unprofessional and no help was offered to me. If that were to happen to me at the restaurant I work at I would make sure to be telling my managers that something is wrong with the delivery services and trying to help the customer proceed with the sale. This was a very disappointing experience.
Had an amazing waitress. It wasnt pack at all. Our food came at a reasonable time. The atmosphere was very enjoyable for my family. The food was very good but I do give it 4 stars due to the food was a bit salty. Not to a point we couldnt eat it it and my boyfriend had 1 Piece of chicken that still had a small bit of blood but either than that everything else was excellent
Zanzibar was a great experience. Despite being short staffed, they were still able to provide a service that made it worth the wait. The cooks did an exceptional job with the seasonings. The food came out before we realized it. The servers as well as management did a great job entertaining while we waited. The catfish, collard greens, sweet potatos, MAC & CHEESE were amazing! Try it! I only gave a 4 because of staffing.
This place is a joke. Ordered food off Uber eats 2 entrees nothing crazy. Had 3 different drivers at the restaurants waiting to pick up the food for 20 min each. Called the restaurant some clueless girl picked up phone and lied and told us our order was ready for the 3rd driver. Restaurant cancelled the order after waiting to over 2 hours. Take your business elsewhere where they actually care about their customers. Don’t be on a food app if you can’t fulfill a simple order
I ordered the shrimp and grits and it was ok. I received 7 shrimp in the entree which is bad because you get 6 in the appetizer. The shrimp were a little tasteless. I have not received a refill on my water and we are a party of 13. Our gratuity is 20% and I expect service to be better. I asked at the end of my meal for a refill but I should not have had to ask. It is so hot in here we are all wiping our face and fanning ourselves to stop the sweat. At least turn on the ac when it is hot outside and it is packed. The manager has been walking around all night so I can see she is tending to people. I dont know if I will come back again. 2nd picture is gnats on the wall.
Went here this past weekend 11/21 for a friends birthday dinner, The food was delicious, the house potatoes are a must have. The staff was amazing everyone was professional and polite. Our server Veronica was exceptional she didn’t miss a beat , our party consisted of 6 somewhat demanding ladies and she was very patient and very polite.
The food was absolutely delicious 😋 especially those soul rolls!!!! Id recommend for sure. The manager is a beast, it was so busy he worked the bar, seated people coming in and directed employees!! He was tipped nicely, because he definitely deserved it, because while doing all that he didnt miss a beat on service!
My husband and I were in Cleveland to visit some friends and stopped in to have lunch yesterday. Although they looked busy we didnt mind waiting as we heard such great things about this place. We were seated by the manager, Ravon, and soon realized he was also the server and bartender. Nonetheless, he kicked butt running around satisfying his many patrons. He was always smiling and courteous. The soul rolls were just as amazing as Ravon said they were! I wish we had a location in Toledo. The atmosphere was wonderful. I can only imagine how nice a summer evening stroll though downtown would be after a date night. We will definitely be back!
The staff is amazing here! So friendly and welcoming! So glad we found this spot while in Cleveland. We will return when we are back in the area! The drinks and food were exceptional!!! Best soul food I have had in awhile! Vegan options available. Highly recommend this establishment!
🥳*My Birthday dinner*😋The chicken was golden & crunchy, the added honey was a tasty good touch. Sweet potatoes/yams were good also, just a little bit too sweet for my pallet. The soul roll was so yummy, just wish it had a little juice inside it.. An the greens & corn muffins I havent got to yet. Lol Ill save that for tomorrow. It was so much food. I only ate a little. U all should try the establishment either downtown or Shaker. Good food & nice atmosphere 👍🏼👍🏽😘
This place has the best food!!! The baked chicken, house potatoes, and macaroni and cheese are amazing. We were only 10 days in Cleveland but ate 3 times here because it was so good. The staff is also extremely kind and attentive. If you want delicious, comfort food, this is the spot!
I am from Central Ohio and my sisters wanted to take me here for lunch. The atmosphere was nice. We were seated within 10 minutes. The waiter Harold sat us down. He was very knowledgeable. He took our order for appetizers and our drink. The order for our appetizer was wrong. Sent it back and they brought out what we ordered. We had to ask for Silverware and plates. We finished our appetizer and now the wait begins. We finished eating the appetizers... 48 minutes and we still dont have our beverages........ Waiting and waiting. While waiting we decided we would just ask for the check and leave. He finally come to take our order. And I asked him can I get the check please. He brought the check and I look at it and they added the beverage on the bill. As he could see we didnt have any drinks on the table. I told him that, he went and talked to the guy behind the bar and they did take it off my bill. It wasnt busy. Their were some customers that came after we were their and they placed their order before us.I know sometimes people have bad days. But that was ridiculous. My sisters experience the first time they went was good, they couldnt believe the service today.I dont know. Maybe I will give them another try when I come back to Town. Maybe I wont.It just left me very irritated.
Great! My son shared his soul rolls (appetizers) with me and to be honest I was full just from those. For my entree I chose the blackened catfish, mac & cheese and greens. However; I couldnt finish it, my stomach was on FULL lolol! So I took the rest home. This was my first time at this location and the service was awesome! All the staff had on mask and social distancing was in full swing.💎💎💎
I was very disappointed in our experience here the ultimate feast was so dry you couldn’t eat it. Our waiters shift ended in the middle of our meal and he just left, so we didn’t even have a waiter and had to wait over an hour for our check and ask two different people. The two stars come because the drinks were good that we got (French connection) and they did discount our meal and apologize however we will not be returning to this location again.
Amazing !!! This is truly one of the best soul food restaurant. That ive ever had in my travels. The fried chicken, greens, hoppin john, grape kool-aid. Made me feel I was back at my grannys house on Sunday after church. My family enjoy the catfish and mac&chez they said it was amazing!!! Great service and highly recommend!!
This was the worst experience ever! Had my order delivered missing 2 sides to one of my dinners, no extra sauce that was paid for, no extra corn muffins also paid for. And my chicken was so fried you could barely chew it! Not to mention mac and cheese side was 5$ and was so small and salty. Not worth the money!
Im a country boy from nh the food and the people were amazing if you want some great home country cooking this is the place definitely a must have ive never heard of turkey chops so i had to have them they were amazing the catfish and sole rolls are amazing i tried lots of stuff and wasnt disappointed
Food was horrible. Overcooked, salty, dry, and room temperature... service was sub par. Birthday party was scheduled for 4pm. No tables set, no menus, no water for 45 mins.3rd time in a row I was unhappy. I keep giving them chances because the food USED TO BE awesome. Will not be wasting my money there again.
Let me start off by saying the staff was very nice and considerate but why why why this is a black owned restaurant that seems to have no sense of management, ok first homeless people coming in the restaurant asking for money, secondly waited for our waitress for almost 30 min to get our drink order people coming in standing everywhere, some one even had a dog with them and no they were not a blind person, still trying to give this place a chance before we even got are food they put all the chairs up in the restaurant and was closing down worst feeling ever couldn’t even enjoy our food as we were out for my fiancé birthday we just asked for boxes and left. Now we got there at 8pm they close at 10pm at 10:30 they was shutting down the restaurant and we were still sitting waiting for our food. I will NEVER eat here again.Food is ok.but def overpriced.I had honey glazed chicken no honey glazed just regular wings and my daughter was missing her potatoes.
Ordered a shrimp n grits dinner for 16.99 and got a regular to go container with the bigger part filled with what had to be shrimp soup very watery not a lot at all. It also didnt come with anything else and although it was tasty we will not be spending that kind of money for a bowl of soup ever again.
I came in for my birthday and literally had the most amazing experience. Calvin, Veronica, and Susan treated me like family and I’ve never had that from a restaurant staff. Thank you Zanibar for your amazing customer service. I’m putting all my family and friends on!
I ordered at about 8 maybe 820 the pork chops dinner was told about 30 minutes to pick up my order the staff was amazing but the food was horrible tasted like it had been sitting around all day and the ad state food prepared fresh I was very disappointed cause I thought I was hitting a home on top of the cook staff was about to fight in the back diffently wont be a returning customer the only reason I didnt give 1 star because the people in the front was super cool and nice
Best shrimp & grits I’ve EVER had. The entire meal was served hot and was DELIGHTFUL. I also had the Sunrise drink (red Kool-Aid and Lemonade)...DELICIOUS! The waitress was also sweet and patient while we explored the menu. A must-go when in Cleveland!P.S. Found this restaurant on DoorDash and even the delivery was majorly impressive.
My family drove from akron to celebrate my nieces birthday. It started our as a 45 min wait which I didnt mind. Once seated we waited an additional amount of time to get water and to take our order. Then it took another hour to get our food. Once the food came it wasnt hot but lukewarm which was disappointing. To top it off I paid for a jerky chicken winglets dinner which it states a dozen wings and I only received 6.When I questioned the servicer he mentioned it only comes as six wings not 12. I feel I was overcharged for half a dinner. To top it off my niece was so upset about the service she ended the night early. What started out as a dinner for 6pm turn into a 4 hour timeline of waiting. The whole night was ruined from the poor service and food. I will never visit the establish again.
Drove up from Columbus just to try this restaurant. I only have two complaints. One, the downtown location does not serve everything listed on the online menu which was a bit disappointing because I already picked out what I was ordering before I got there only to find out they didnt have it. Two, the food I did order was not hot, more like luke warm. With that being said, the food taste great and the staff was amazing. You could tell they were understaffed but it didnt affect our experience at all. I would highly recommend this restaurant and we will certainly be back.
Truly unique food and normal food too. We really enjoyed eating here after the Browns Ravens game. We absolutely loved the fried green tomatoes, corn bread muffins! Everything we ate we enjoyed. The drinks are super yummy- Purple Rain was the kids fave. Alcoholic drink Zanzibar was great too. The staff were all very friendly. A local (we are visiting from Oklahoma) recommended this restaurant to us and she was right. Highly recommend!
I preach about catering to your own people but it never fails that you end up with the shorter end of the stick. I’m visiting here in Cleveland and searched for food places. I was sooo excited to visit this place! We walked in and the lady nonchalantly told us that “take out only, I don’t have no server”. This is ridiculously unprofessional. Literally coming from Alabama and extremely excited until this employee let allll the air out the balloon.

2022-03-29My friend and I accidentally ended up here after trying 2 previous spots and didnt like them. I felt like I was in the South. The hospitality here is great; the staff were friendly and welcoming. The food was really good. Better than good. Far better than we expected. My taste buds were definitely not prepared for this. We checked in our hotel thereafter and fell asleep. The end.**Note: We sat at the bar because we were told that they were only serving at the bar.

2022-05-22Let me first say Id go back. But this first experience wasnt the best. The chicken was fried a little too hard. The French connection drink I had was awesome. The purple rain drink was good until I saw some stuff floating in it that I couldnt identify. The mac and cheese and yams were great. The pasta was tasty as well. They need to clean the panels around the bottom of the bar a little more.

2021-11-30The soul rolls are always a safe, yet satisfying choice. The temperature of the food was perfect and we didn’t wait long after ordering for our food to come out. The staff was very pleasant and attentive. We went for lunch and other than a few take out orders coming and going, it was pretty empty. I have had bad experiences with Zanzibar before (mostly having to wait upwards of 40 minutes before getting our food), but I believe the management here is making a great effort to turn this around and put a better taste in the mouth of Cleveland. Please support this Black-owned business!

2022-02-21Google black owned business while in Cleveland Ohio and this spectacular restaurant pops up. The pictures, atmosphere, staff, food, drinks, the list can go on of how wonderful this restaurant is. We went during All Star weekend and its located minutes away from the Cavaliers arena so there was a bit of wait. The peach cooler was said the be divine. The house potatoes was a step up for scalloped potatoes. The greens were cooked in the most succulent way. Thw rice and salmon cakes were a must try and they did not fail. My only complaint was the macaroni and cheese was just macaroni. I was sad for sure.

2022-03-30Having visited the Shaker Square location previously, I was looking forward to a good meal. That was accomplished and was delicious overall, however, I found not all dishes arrived hot to me (the House potatoes, for instance). Also, please note that all Zanzibar restaurants do not share all menu items. This visit, their jerk chicken wing dings (accompanied with Cajun corn and corn muffins, sides changeable upon request), the catfish meal (accompanied with cole slaw, but is also changeable upon request), coffee, and a soft drink known as The Sunrise (made with lemonade and red Koolaid). Even though I was very hungry, pictures have been provided for your viewing pleasure! If you fancy a soul food meal and just happen to be in the Downtown Cleveland area, go ahead and give them a try. 4/5

2022-02-14This place is amazing...from the waitress to the kool-aid. Me and my family(8 deep) came in from Pittsburgh and loved the atmosphere. It felt right at home, however we came for the food and it didnt disappoint. That honey glaze chicken was incredible, the mac was cheesey and the yams were sweet. It was almost to much my wife had the catfish & chicken she was blown away she just kept telling everyone how good the fish was...and that kool-aid OMG im soo glad I took sum to-go..bottom line when Im back in Cleveland Im definitely going to end on Prospect Ave some way or another!!!

2022-04-26The food is decent, but the veggie plates portions are just too small. 3 to go sides for $12.50. The 3 containers stacked are smaller than your average can. I feel like the portions you get when you order Togo are significantly smaller than in house.
