Beautiful place nasty bartender! I asked her about an order that should have been ready to pick up she was nasty and morose! She was childish to the point that she walked away from me well I was speaking nicely to her. Go ahead chef was awesome he let me know that my order will be placed in front of others because it wasnt put in the right place. The atmosphere is kind of uppity. I didnt mind that at all just a nasty bartender.
AWFUL!!! I have never seen a restaurant that is so incompetent at handling Friday night reservations. I show up at the time of my reservation and I am told that irregardless of my reservation that I would still have to wait. However, I was understanding of not being seated immediately. As I stood at the entrance, I spoke to several different couples who were also waiting. One couple had arrived before me but had no reservations, two other couples mentioned that they had called while driving to the restaurant to get their names on the list. One other couple came in after me and had no reservations and didn’t call in advance. My date and I stood there for over 35 minutes while they seated every person that was in the lobby. What made matters even more ridiculous was that instead of allowing people who were standing in front of the doors to sit at the bar and order drinks, they had about 8 seats that had cards saying those seats were reserved. Finally, when we were the last couple in the lobby they had the nerve to tell us that once a table came available we would be next. Why would I bother making reservations hours earlier if they are just going to randomly choose who they want to seat? I had enough of the rude treatment and decided to take my business elsewhere. I will never return to this restaurant, I would rather go hungry. Don’t make reservations at this restaurant, they are a joke. They are completely ignorant.
We called ahead to put our name down and was told it’s a 10 min wait. Double checked with the host and waited for 45 mins while people jumping in front of long before they even got there before us without reservations. We left because a total of an hour had elapsed and we were tired of waiting!!!
Apparently Vernon’s doesn’t want your money. I’ve had their food a couple of times and have no complaint about that. But what I do have an issue with is trying to schedule a wedding rehearsal dinner for a party of 35. I called them on 2 occasions a week apart and spoke to whoever answered the phone. They were both very pleasant and took down all of the details and said they would put the information on the managers desk and I would receive a return call. It has now been 3 weeks since my initial phone call and guess what,,, I still have not received a follow up. Additionally, my ex informed me that she reached out to them twice as well. It is for this reason I surmise they are doing just fine and don’t need or want my business; therefore, I will be seeking an alternate venue for this event.
Love this place. The food is delicious. I had the eggplant parmesan. It tasted so good. My sister had the chicken parmesan. We each had salads that were extremely fresh. My husband loved the shrimp appetizer so much he ordered two. My bro-in-law ate the veal with mushrooms.
I was excited to try Vernon’s for the first time based on reviews. Wow, was I disappointed! Ordered the meatball splash and it was nothing but soggy Texas toast with loose ground beef. Read that again: an Italian restaurant that uses Texas toast and loose ground beef for their meatball sandwich. Shameful.Doused in sauce (hence it was mushy) and no cheese whatsoever. WHO MAKES A MEATBALL SPLASH WITH NO CHEESE????I was given about 15 French fries on the side, just pitiful portion sizing. Maybe dining in is a better experience than takeout, but I’ll never know because I won’t go back.Restaurant owners, train your staff to prepare each order with care, like it’s the customer’s first experience — it just might be, and first impressions last.
I believe everything at Vernons is amazing. I had the steak with shrimp and have to say best steak I have ever had even better then Texas! Vernons also has amazing pasta, soup, raviolis, appetizers, etc. I will be going back and probably will be until the day they decide to close their doors!
We had 13 people for dinner tonight. They seated us in a lovely step-down area, which was private and quiet. Our server Katie was friendly, experienced and competent. She made serving our large group look easy. Food was fresh and delicious, and prices are moderate. Management visited a few times just to make certain everything was going smoothly.
All I can say is wow. Vernons continues to impress each time. If you love true Italian that is made with love, then this place is for you. You can tell how much Vernon and his son love to make people happy with their food. Cant say enough. Try it, you will not be disappointed.
My husband and I have eaten there several times. It is our only go-to place for a date night. The food is always beyond amazing. The meatballs with ricotta makes an incredible appetizer, the steak is cooked perfectly every time and has the most delicious taste! Our favorite restaurant without a doubt! Highly recommend.
Tables were spaced far apart so kudos to them for trying to maintain social distance. Bottleneck effect through the entrance/exit though. Weve been dining at Vernons for years but our most recent visit for Valentines Day was not stellar; everyones food was incredibly salty. Maybe it was just an off day for the chef?
We love this place. The food is always amazing and the staff are very happy, helpful, and enthusiastic about the menu and atmosphere. The only disappointment we have ever had is when our favorite dessert isnt on the menu for the evening. Highly recommend giving them a try; you wont be disappointed and you will go back again and again.
For some reason, I always forget about Vernons. I think the last time I was there was probably about 15 years ago, but we decided to stop by there for dinner a few weeks ago. The food was fantastic! I really enjoyed the bread and oil as a change from bread and butter. The oil was flavorful, but not overwhelming. My side salad was good, with a variety of vegetables. I ordered it was ranch, which was pretty obviously a squeeze-bottle ranch, but I only fault myself for that -- I mean seriously, who in their right mind orders ranch dressing at an Italian restaurant instead of their house options?? My entree was gnocchi with a meatball. It was a generous portion and absolutely delicious! I also stole a few bites of my boyfriends chicken parmesan. I thought it was on par with Sunrise, which is definitely a compliment. I will definitely be back!
The food was good but service was poor. When asked to bring more bread (for a table of 7), the server pointed to the two pieces on the dish and had to be asked for butter. She also did not offer appetizer plates so we could share are appetizers, told us to use our bread plates. Three entrees were served, then we had to wait for 3 more, then had to wait again for the last one to be brought out. No explanation, no apology. Throughout the meal, she came back only once to refill drinks. At the end, one in our group did not like their entree and her response was Why didnt you say something? No apology, although it was taken off the bill. I wont be back!
I enjoyed my meal there. An old friend and I met for lunch here a while back and the food was really fantastic. Id give it a full 5 stars if they had more traditional seating though. Our table wasnt the most comfortable and the temperature in the building was a little lower than I would have preferred. Otherwise a great place to get really well cooked meals.
Service and atmosphere were excellent. The main cook, needs to read the order completely. I asked for extra garlic on my greens and recieved none. My wife who cannot eat red peppers asked that they not put red peppers on her pasta. Pasta showed up with peppers. The cook needs to take time and CAREFULLY READ the orders. We will be back.
My family has gone to this restaurant for as long as I can remember. We have had family dinners, birthday parties, anniversary parties, general celebrations, etc. here. The food is always great and the service is always quick and friendly. The lunch menu is my favorite as the prices and portions are perfect! The combinations of food are also better, imo, for lunch. If you get there when they open, the wait is short!
We waited an hour even though we had a reservation. The table we were to be seated at did not leave as expected (party of 13). So I believe that flow of tables could be managed a little better. I have been told at some very fine restaurants when I make reservations for a large party that we will have to be out by a certain time b/c another large party is reserved after us. Food was very good. Our party had oysters, bang bang shrimp, salmon, scallops, Angel hair giardinara, chicken masala. Service was also very good.
Went to pick up a to go order and stood there for 17 minutes before we finally addressed someone. The manager even walked past us 6 times and never even said excuse me. The bartender watched my son and I walk up there and never said anything. We finally had to stop a waiter and ask about our order. When we got home and opened our food, we were missing two salads and the sauce for the lasagnas (3 of them) was pretty much water. The drunken chicken dinner was ok and bruschetta bread was the only thing I would say was actually good. I’ve heard so much about this place, all good, so we had to try for ourselves. I would never recommend this restaurant due to their lack of customer service and food not being worth the price!
We were a 10 top of seniors. Although for us, the lighting was so romantic that we had to order off Braille Menus. The food and pricing was typical of a caterer operated restaurant. The waitress that we had was very good.(Perhaps one of the ladies in our party requested that the lights be dim.)We lingered long enough so that I suspect the waitress went home to dead plants and pets. But we had a good time, and Vernons accommodated us.
My husband and I decided to eat here for our anniversary which happens to be New Years Eve. We have eaten here before but not recently. We had always liked the food at Vernons. Was extremely disappointed tonight. The menu was a restricted menu because of it being New Years Eve. In our opinion a good restaurant should be able to handle the crowds on this type of holiday but apparently Vernons felt they could not. I do not like mashed potatoes so I asked if I could get another potato. They would not do any substitution. I ordered a 6 oz. sirloin fillet with shrimp. The steak was tough and tasteless. I could not believe how terrible it was. My husband had the veal parmesan which was good, however, the sauce was not good. I actually ate half of his veal because I could not eat mysteak. The entire meal seemed like it was mass produced in advance and just kept warm. We got there at 4:30 and were out the door at 5:10. My expectation was high because we have eaten here plenty of times. Tonight I wish we had not. It was a waste of $50. Will not be back here any time soon.
Food was decent...BUT we ordered a large amount of food (pans for a party). They put 3 pans in a box. They put the Italian greens on the bottom and the 2 heavier pans on top of it. The oil and grease had leaked EVERYWHERE because of the weight on it. It ruined my pants and ended up all over the back seat. Youd think theyd know not to do that. I mean when you pay a higher price for food you expect them to also package it correctly. Its pretty simple.
THE BEST linguine and light clam sauce I ve ever had. Vernon is a master in the kitchen and will prepare any dish you are asking for. I will be back often. His buffet is setup with excellent eye appeal during Hoilidays and special events, which makes you go back ..again
Best food in Youngstown Metro.Vernon is an gentleman proprietor-chef.The flavors are always well coordinated, simple, letting the quality ingredients and ace execution shine.Consistent service with a smile never disappoints.Every time is a perfect 100/100 score in my experience. Very hard to achieve with a hypercritical individual like myself.Highest qality ingredients, consistent and careful execution, fast and attentive, courteous service, highly reasonable prices, etc.make for a terrific value. I always leave feeling as if I am glowing. Full and happy is a good way to be, and Vernon always makes sure I leave that way.Unbeatable steak.Chicken cacciatore like my grandma would be proud of.And the best damn meatballs at any restaurant... better than grandmas...
Ordered steamed mussels and 2 werent opened. Sent back for fresh order and think i got same bowl with more added. That was nice but bowl was not hot. They were good but wondered about quality. Main dish was boneless pork loin with mashed potato and roasted brussel sprouts. Pork was cooked perfectly. Moist and delicious. Potatoes were good also just needed some garlic. Brussel sprouts were bad. They were hard could barely get fork in to cut in half. I have made these at homeCut in half oil in saute pan with some minced garlic and good butter. Cook until nice char and fork tender. Would have been 100 percent better if done this way. Have eaten there twice before and not really impressed with food. May go back but will be awhile.
The food was just ok. I had steak and lobster and I was told by our server that I had to share my hit butter for lobster with another person at my table. Really? We asked if the sirlion fielt was a true fielt and he said yes and it was not. Probably would not go back. We had 18 people and the bill was about $590 was not worth that.
My favorite restraunt is the USA. Super good, great selection, large portions, low cost especially for a gourmet meal. They use only fresh ingredients for everything and make everything in house. Really, they make all there sauces, dips, glazes, ect in house and fresh. There is always something new to try. You need to go here and experience this.
Good food in dumpy setting. Never order takeout or any delivery service, totally unreliable. Ordered today and had received multiple updates that the DoorDash was picking up our food...hours later I get a call from India telling me the order would need refunded as the restaurant wasn’t accepting orders...what happened two hours ago when the restaurant accepted??? ... long story short restaurant was totally un helpful with unprofessional staff as expected from a hole in the wall.EDIT with time... have called to discuss the issues with DoorDash and have been told “your mistake our apps have been off all night”. Total BS, thirty minutes after they cancel out order I still get this on DoorDash...
This restaurant is a staple of the community when it comes to authentic Italian cuisine & its as close as one gets to eating a meal in Naples or Venice without getting jet lag & paying $1,300 in airfare 😉! Expect to pay SLIGHTLY higher prices than other so-called authentic Italian restaurants like The O.G. & others. But if youre looking for the REAL DEAL look no further. The measly 10-15% extra youll pay here is WELL worth it. Youre paying for an experience! There is a wide variety of appetizers, entrees, deserts & wine to make your taste buds super satisfied not to mention your belly will be quite complacent due to the excellent portions, I would most definitely recommend anybody who hasnt dined at this fine, family owned, famous restaurant to make a date to experience the excellent ambiance, taste the TRULY authentic Italian entrees & imbibe on the finest wine at Vernons Cafe!!!
Undoubtedly, the best restaurant around…and I can’t limit “around” to any one specific area of the globe. So, this is the best restaurant in the world. The world. While many restaurants serve good food in this area, there is no place better than what Vernon’s offers…fresh fruit and cheese dishes in the summer, outstanding soups in the winter, and daily specials that can’t be beat.
Had a Christmas party there for senior retirees. They require $200 deposit. Threatened to withhold all or part of it because only 25 of 30 showed up. Weve been going there for years. They did refund my deposit, but I cant guarantee how many show. Wont take a chance on them next year.
This place is the best food I can find. My family drives from the west side of Cleveland any chance we can to visit Vernon and Dennis and the fine staff. Food and wine is the best around and is much better that any New York City Italian restaurant. Very similar to the places in Bostons North End without the excessive cost.i suggest going there with 4 to 8 people so that you can sample the fine italian appetizers. The peppers and oil with the fresh bread is a must to start. We enjoy the beans/greens/sausage, the stuffed hot peppers, all 3 types of calamari are good but the bean stew with the grilled calamari is something special. For the main event, i love the red clam sauce, seafood linguine, drunken chicken or the veal chop. Wife likes eggplant parm and fettuccine alfredo. If you want something special, just ask and Vernon will cook it up. Also they have homemade cavatelli all the time. With all that great food, we rarely eat dessert, but on occasion we take one of those speciality pizzas with an order of greens home.
Wont say everything was good but I will say it was fair....I ordered chicken francaise....it was good....I only ate half and the waitress took my plate to package it up for me to go.....fine, until now....I go to reheat my leftover and all she did was pick the piece of chicken off the plate and plop it in a box.....where is my francaise juices????? Down the drain from last night???? I am very upset....if I wanted a piece of breaded chicken I could have went to McDonalds and got that on a chicken sandwich!!!! Had I known the waitress lacked common sense I would have packaged it myself.....tell you waitstaff not to do anybody useless favors anymore....I will not be back First and last. Thank you!
Went there last evening brought our food was just warm my daughter egg plant parm cold told the waitress took it back poured hot tomatoe sauce on it now looked like soup and soggy couldnt even see the eggplant never was able to eat dinner with us never came back to fill our water bottle or check on our meals over charged us for our drinks and automatically put the tip on our bill for four of us terrible service was not worth the tip she put on our bill will never go back

2022-03-15Had to change plans at the last minute. My friend recommended this restaurant. Luckily there was one table available when we arrived. We had a wonderful evening out. The 2017 chardonnay I ordered paired beautifully with the sea bass and lobster risotto dish I ordered. The grilled calamari appetizer exceeded our expectations. My friend and I both left no trace of dessert. She had the tiramisu and I sampled the chocolate desire.Good place to go if you need gluten free options.

2022-06-26Vernon recently had a 6 lb Lobster on special that 2 of us enjoyed! We also appreciate his oyster selection. He always gets cold water oysters, the best. Great drinks, food, service, and people!

2022-02-14A great locally owned, family owned business in the area. The sea cake pictured was fantastic. I dont live in the area any more, but try to stop in when I am back. If you havent seen their very recent bar and restaurant renovations you need to stop in and check them out.

2021-08-21Had an absolutely wonderful time, Vernon never seems to amaze me. His staff was totally awesome and the food top notch. The expresso and chocolate martinis were excellent, Chicken francaise that I had I was very impressed not overly powered lemon flavor it was perfect. One of the best meals Ive had and the last year and a half and when I say I do reviews I do reviews. Just under 3 million views. Thank you Vernon 🙏🙌🙏🙌 the calamari was prepared extremely well and not to mention instead of just a marinara he had another sauce not sure exactly what it was I think it was like a saraki sauce or something and it was perfect for the calamari

2022-03-07Delightful experience. The place was super crowded but our waiter (who seemed to be covering our entire section) was still friendly and quick. The food was perfectly cooked. I had the baked goat cheese which I highly recommend. And the squid ink linguine for my main. Be warned the portions are large. I had them pack the included side salad to go so I could save room for my main.

2022-04-01This was my first time in this restaurant. The food and service was so good.. I felt like a friend and family member invited to dinner. The food is best I have had in Youngstown. This is type of service and food I get in Cleveland or Pittsburgh. Attention to detail on point. The best bruschetta I have had in a long time. The eggplant parmigiana to die for. The side of spaghetti was not over cooked and full of flavor.. I also enjoyed the fried greens. We went Saturday March 23,2022. It was so good to be out. Did I mention our sweet server Kathleen she was top of the line. From start to finish a great dining experience

2021-12-2312/22/2021 - Ordered for Pick UpLast night we ordered for pick up, specifically because of Ramen Wednesday, which was fantastic! We also ordered chicken parm, the sauce was different tasting then before, this had a canned spaghetti o flavored sauce, it was odd.. Our kids were to share a 12in pizza, which they wouldn’t eat after biting into the giant onions under the cheese. We had also ordered bruschetta, like last time, it was burnt, not a little burnt were it’s crunchy & edible, the one piece was so black and charred it was completely inedible (see photo). I understand busy holiday season, but for a restaurant that is so pricey, I have higher expectations.11/20/2021 - Ate in Restaurant:Our 30 minute wait was well worth it! We got bruschetta, Pasta e fagioli, chicken parm and the drunken chicken. The Pasta e fagioli here was hands down the best I’ve ever had. Our bruschetta was a little burnt but still very delicious. The chicken was cooked perfectly. We will definitely be back.

2021-07-28OMG! Food is fantastic. Enough said. Just go and enjoy! Photo is my lunch salad for one. Huge. Grouper was as good as anything Ive had in Florida.
