Way over priced, nothing to brag about. Holy hell this is the place to be if you have toouch money and time but nothing better to do with it. The service is as good as any place else and the drinks are as good as any bar in North East Ohio. There some cool features like a secret room left over from prohibition. Im not a fan of the place but please do try it out and make up your own mind.
My boyfriend and I were really looking forward to checking this place out on our rare mid week date day. We arrived a few minutes before they opened and the front door was unlocked. My boyfriend went to go in ahead of me and the bartenders made it clear that they didn’t open until 4:30 and locked the doors when we walked back out. At 4:30 we tried to open the door back up and the bartender very rudely yelled “it’s locked”. Side note to this whole scenarios is it’s pouring rain outside right now. Really unfortunate to have rude people at the bar before we even got a chance to experience this place.
So this spot is iconic. Amazing cocktails that are $20 a piece unless noted otherwise. Not a huge beer selection ( maybe six total when we went but they had Fatheads and something local) ladies loved their drinks. Was packed and loud Saturday night with a live jazz band that had a saxophone that was a little overpowering with that sound but otherwise was awesome and chill. Definitely a spot to stop at if you like amazing cocktails.
First night out post baby and his was just my speed - quiet - intimate beautiful jazz playing a well manicured drink and friendly staff - a little higher priced than I normally go but had the best dark and stormy! Happy hour 4-7 live jazz every night ! Mostly appetizers but they were yummy !
Cozy, dim-lit, speakeasy feel. I liked my cocktail but it was 20 dollars which is crazy to me. Very small place but I did enjoy the piano player. I suggest eating a full course meal before you go, since they only have small bites. It was a decent experience, but not enough to where I would go back.
Its a lifestyle I could get used to, the Velvet Tango lifestyle. The Velvet Tango offers a tome of a menu filled to the brim with inventive and tasty cocktails, including virgin cocktails. They have a small selection of treats to nibble on, but the menu is 98% cocktails. Its a thing I didnt know about, this cocktail only club, and I like it. The baby grand in the corner was being played by an excellent musician, and he was lovingly hammering out a Monk-styke version of Herbie Hancocks Cantaloupe Island. There were only a handful of people there, and they were all having a spacious good time in the intimate joint. A few minutes later the piano player took a break. Cantaloupe Island (the Blue Note version) started playing on the PA, softly. ***happy** Thanks to our server, Stanton, who gave us space after he handed me my Bananas Foster Cocktail. Thanks, Velvet Tango for making me want to Tango haha.
The live music at Velvet Tango Room is really the element that sets this venue apart from other Cleveland bars. If you love jazz music, their trio is really top notch! The ambiance is nostalgic, though also claustrophobic, and menu unimaginative. While the cocktails are fine...you can definitely sip on a better artisanal drink on the near west side (likely at a better price point too).
They cancelled my reservations twice because of being overbooked. They requested that I call to reschedule, but after multiple attempts at contacting someone named Terry and not receiving any return calls I figured my business wasnt important to them. Had a great time at Bourbon Street Barrel Room!
Had the best experience for girls night! Drinks are worth the price! But what made our experience truly spectacular was, Nicole, our server. She was above and beyond wonderful and knowledgeable and fun! Could write an essay about how great she was alone! Ambiance was romantic and classy, just wonderful.
These are easily the best cocktails in Cleveland. The bartenders are very well experienced and it is incredible how much they know about their menu of about 90 drinks. I have never had a bad drink here and have tried about 25 different drinks at this point. The drinks certainly are expensive at $18 a piece, but well worth it. I usually go during happy hour anyway ($10) which truly is the best deal in town. 2 drinks will do you in quite easily as they tend to be strong without a strong taste! Everything about the environment is cozy, social, and a unique blast from the past. VTR is a cocktail lovers paradise. If you have a special occasion to celebrate, the back room is incredible as well!
I want to start by saying that the drinks were fantastic. That’s the only reason I’m giving 2 stars instead of one. High quality and maybe worth $12-$15 at best.Got charged $18 per drink but surprise! There’s absolutely no way of knowing that because it’s not listed anywhere :) super convenient. My friends and I have heard nothing but positive things about this place, so we checked it out for one of our friends birthdays. The worst service we have ever received. The staff made us feel like we did not belong there at all. It was very uncomfortable, off-putting, and overall disappointing because we wanted to have a good experience. There was a small group of us and the woman seating us seemed incredibly annoyed that there was more than 2 people. She sat us at a table with two less chairs than we needed and when we asked for two more she straight up said no, she could only bring us MAYBE one, because there were no more chairs, even though we were staring at at least two empty tables all night. There was only one server the whole night who was semi polite to us, everyone else was very, very rude and could not be bothered with us.I do not recommend.
This was one of the best experiences I have had at a craft cocktail bar. Ben provided exceptional service and made several excellent drink recommendations. Not to mention the cocktails were the best I have ever had! My two friends and I will absolutely return to the Velvet Tango Room in the future. Very well done!
This is a pricey cocktail lounge but it had the best alcoholic beverages I have ever consumed. The servers are knowledgeable, Pleasant, and make for a good experience. The pianists are superb and very enjoyable. If it werent so pricey and someone out of the way for me, I would be there regularly
Stopped in for cocktails and Jazz for an impromptu date night for me and my wife. Tried a scotch cocktail that was smoky and delicious. The jazz was wonderful, we had a nice evening just chatting, listening to the piano, and relaxing after a very stressful week. Get there early! We got right in just before 8pm on a Saturday, but there was a good sized line when we left around 930p. Already looking forward to going back!
Loved this place! Great vintage decor and mood lighting. We went on Saturday night and they had live jazz in the background. The bartender was awesome and conversational, telling us about the drinks and explaining how she was making them. My friend didnt like his and she gladly made him a different one. Only issue is the price- most cocktails are $18. Theyre absolutely delicious and are a good size, but this isnt the place you want to go if you want more than 1 or 2 drinks.
Word of warning: If you are not trying to spend money, dont go here! There is nothing cheap on the menu and you will be disappointed. Other than that, this place is a small gem. (Emphasis on the small) Took a lil time to get a seat because there isnt much seating. This is a historical speakeasy and the menu is full of traditional and homemade drinks to try. The Bartenders encourage you to try some different things and give you some suggestions based on your taste. The drinks are unique and strong, no watering down over here. The food menu leaves a lot to be desired. Theres only a handful of items and most I wouldnt consider eating while Im drinking. But, thats the worst of my complaints. This place is definitely worth the time to check out if youre looking for something different and have the dime to spend.
Small place and could miss on first drive by. Very nice inside with wood and a classic feel. The bartenders were friendly, knowledgable and well trained. The water stayed filled and you were checked on but not bugged. The drink menu is not your normal drink listing. Very unique options for many liquor types. The drinks are not cheap so this is for quality drinks that you want to take your time and enjoy. Great stop if that is what you are looking for. Vodka tonics and standard drinks not what your coming for though they can make it. No beer here. A must stop and will go again.
I’m so sad to rate this place a 3. We’ve been coming here a few years and unfortunately, it is no longer the special experience it used to be. Simply put, the “back room” is no longer worth reserving as the calm, romantic atmosphere cannot be expected. Now, large and loud parties are allowed to stand around the bar, monopolizing the understaffed, dismissive bartenders. The ambiance of the piano and candlelight is gone, and the service is poor. The only redeeming quality is the legit cocktails that seem to be consistent while the service and atmosphere are not. I’d recommend trying to sit in the second room where the jazz trio plays. You can actually hear the music, and I bet the service is better. We’re disappointed that our go-to spot for special occasions (and the occasional fun night out) has become a spot for large groups to get drunk and be loud, and for smaller groups who love cocktails to get little attention.
I had long heard of the famed Velvet Tango Room and finally went with a girlfriend this past Friday night. We were able to get seated right away without a reservation which was nice. Here are my pros/cons and why I only rated it 3 stars.Pros:- My drink was delicious- Very attentive and courteous staff- Cozy, romantic, intimate environment- Great jazz band, not too loudCons:- $18 per drinkListen, I know it has a huge long list of Pros and for that reason I can see why its popular. But EIGHTEEN dollars for a drink? Eighteen dollars?! Come on...I dont care how much time you put into the craft, thats outrageous. I may go back on a very special occasion. I still dont see myself feeling good about paying that much for a drink. But, maybe Im in the minority.
Stopped by late in the night during my first trip to Cleveland. It was chilly and thunderstorming and the only other two patrons left as I got there. The pianist left at that time too, needless to say it was a slow night. There was an extensive cocktail menu and the bartender was very knowledgeable about each one I asked about. She even gave me a tour of the backroom. Ordered a Manhattan which was delicious and while I sipped on that she recommended a few places in town I might be interested in.I was really just hoping to hear some jazz but ended up having a great conversation and a drink. The whole bar just has a great vibe and great staff. Kaylee was her name. 6 stars. And as others have said the drinks are pricey but I would say its worth it. Just know what youre looking for.
Excellent date night venue. Very quiet and cozy atmosphere. Friendly staff. We made reservations for the back room and had a wonderful time enjoying our cocktails and listening to the piano. The place takes you back in time.Oh also, banana frosting, everyone. Banana frosting.
My wife and I have been coming to Velvet Tango Room for years. We have spent many birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions in the back room. We have always had amazing experiences until our most recent visit. We entered the back room, which usually hosts a romantic atmosphere with a piano player, attentive bartenders and amazing cocktails. At our most recent visit, we were met with with a couple of dozen people standing near the bar in the back room, talking loud and monopolizing the attention of the bartenders. It took a very long time to get our waters filled and drinks served. When we asked about the change in atmosphere, the bartender replied that there was a birthday party which hosted a lot of people. It didn’t seem to matter at all that we chose to celebrate our anniversary at velvet tango room. We were very disappointed in our experience, but even more disappointed in the way we the bartenders/servers treated us. It pains me to say that this is most likely the last time we will visit Velvet Tango Room, but we see little reason in returning following this experience. The reason this review has 3 star instead of 1, is because the cocktails continue to impress although the quality of service appears to decline.
The drinks were delicious, however my boyfriend and I only got 1 each because in the 40 minutes we were there, we were only checked on twice- once to get our drink orders and when they brought us our drinks (we sat in the side room by the piano). We had to go to the bar to get the check because we werent being acknowledged (which we dont mind but I think they normally bring it to the tables?). And the tables around us seemed to have similar issues when the place wasnt packed. Also, I ordered one of their specialty cocktails (a creamsicle one I think) and when I ordered it the bartender seemed annoyed, mentioning that it takes a while to make. The ambiance is neat though and the live music is awesome.
Velvet Tango Room has been on my list for sometime now due to the fact that anyone you talk to says it is out of this world and they werent kidding.I surprised my boyfriend by taking him here a few weeks ago for his birthday. Once we found it, as it doesnt look like much from the outside we were stunned with the interior. The lush yet cozy surroundings transport you to a different era. The jazz trio made the experience even more intimate and enjoyable. Our bartender Kyle was wonderful and fun and made great drink recommendations that did not disappoint. We snacked on bread and cheese set out for happy hour and enjoyed our first drinks ($10 during HH). I mentioned that I did not like Bourbon and Kyle our bartender bet that he could make me a bourbon drink I would love. Well I am always up for a little gamble... challenge accepted. And wow he sure was right it was wonderful.Kyle even took the time to give us a small tour of their secret party room and patio.
VTR is fundamental in Cleveland. This is my and my wife place for all celebrations and we would be so sad not to be able to be back once this is over. I tried so many cocktails and introduced the bar to so many people (from out of town and from Europe) and was never disappointed. Fantastic!
The Velvet Tango Room was a great experience! We had reservations for the bar in speak easy bar in the back. The outside is hardly recognizable, except a small frame with Velvet Tango Room and maybe the hours in plain font. The front bar (which I didnt really see) was normal, nothing to note from walking through. The bar in the back was very casual with sofas, chairs, high top tables and seating at the bar. The bartendar was exceptional, she was able to describe drinks with such detail and passion, she could of described a rum and coke and it probably would of sounded amazing. The drinks were superb. I got he Gimlet, to try something Im familiar with and it was simply amazing and delightful. The whole time there it felt very relax and chill. The bartendar was what made the experience and the drinks even better! Thanks for an awesome experience
Cocktails are good and they have some creative offerings but for $18, far overpriced. Thats nothing against the quality of service or mixing, just that I know I can get each of the mainstays for half the price but exactly the same elsewhere. I will note that the Old Fashioned is bad. Its Wisconsin style, which is gross and not an actual Old Fashioned.
Great drinks for a date, band come in around 9:00pm. Good music, chill atmosphere perfect for dates. The place is perfect for after dinner drinks, perfect way to finish an evening without the bustle of a common bar. I will definitely revisit for a date or anniversary.
My favorite place for upscale, unique cocktails. Go for happy hour when almost affordable. Their version of a Manhattan, is unbelievable. Food, or should I say snacks, very limited and not great. Unfortunately, there are so many cocktails to try, must use a ride share.
Outstanding cocktails with outlandish prices. This fit into a pattern of overpriced modern goods and services in Cle. That said, it was still some of the best cocktails Ive had so far. The secret back room was also a beautiful place to relax in. Your date will be impressed.
What a wonderful experience. Excellent drinks, service and music. A truly relaxing evening. And very high quality ingredients. The Moscow Mule has the most lovely throat-tingle from the homemade ginger beer. Great music on a weeknight as well. Must try this place at least once!
Extremely experienced bartenders in a cozy craft cocktail room. These are precision cocktails done to the detail perfectly so expect to pay for this privilege. This is not a place for rum and coke. Had the best homemade eggnog ever! Sit at the bar and watch them do their magic.
Live piano and saxophone being played and a great vibe. All cocktails are $18 which can make it difficult if you are looking to have a few drinks. All drinks seem to be made from scratch though. In duck island which allows you to start or continue your night in Tremont of Ohio City.
A truly fascinating and unique bar. Set in a bit of a run down neighborhood, the Tango Room is an awesome location that features bespoke cocktails and wonderful service. Attended a party celebrating an upcoming wedding here and the event space is located in a locked and secret back room, quite possible the coolest thing ever. Definitely some place you want to check out when in Cleveland.
VTR has been my absolutely favorite cocktail spot since I first went there perhaps 10 years ago. The atmosphere, drinks, and staff were top notch, unparalleled in my travels to other cities.Sadly, it seems to have taken a turn for the worse. The staff has almost completely turned over in the past few months. Drinks are still good, but something has been lost that the current staff can’t replace. The atmosphere is just not quite the same. I suspect it may be due to the impending sale to new ownership. It seems now it is just a “bar” and no longer a destination. There are many bars to choose from....
Ive been here a few times and the drinks are quite good... When you can get one. My most recent trip left a bad taste. I joined a group of friends at a table near the bar and proceeded to wait 45 minutes for the waiter to come. The bar refused to take orders if you are not seated there so we waited. The waiter never spoke to us and we never did get a drink that night.I noticed a couple come in and the hostess never greeted them. They waited a few minutes before just leaving.I suspect they are rather judgemental about the type of people they want to serve. If you are middle aged and wearing a suit, youll probably have a good time.
We went for an after dinner drink for my husbands birthday. We were greeted by a lovely man and sat us at the bar. We were told that if we didnt like our drink that we could have another drink to replace this The young bartender took our order and assured me that my drink would be sweet and not bitter when I questioned the ingredients. My drink was only a half full glass and when I watched him make it he poured it in the glass and didnt like the way it looked and added more bitters and added back to the shaker before pouring. He never came back to us to ask if we even liked our drinks...which I didnt and had to swap mine with my husband and bless his heart he was able to swallow it down. We drank our two 18 dollar drinks with no one even asking how our experience was. We travel often and are used to higher priced drinks but wont be back due to poor service.
Best cocktails in cleveland for two decades now. there is a massive proliferation of cocktail bars and some do a solid job. but the vtr still holds title over them all, i do believe. and they’ve got a sneaky good few and fresh craft beers from market garden for the folks in your group who prefer local craft beer to cocktails. vtr keeps the proverbial bar very high and still caters to all guests..... 👍👍
Awesome local bar. A bit of a sticker shock for a drink. But well worth it! Bartenders here treat it like an art form. You will never get a better drink in the city. Very classy vibe, you sort of need to dress up. Also the place doent get much business before 8ish, so plan on going a little later.
No blenders here. Shaken many times to make a drink frothy if needed. Home made mixers like bitters n ginger ale n candied cherries n fresh whole lemons n limes etc! All drinks top shelf n custom blended. No sex on the beach here... comfy bar chairs n sofas n private bar in the back w patio n real putting green. Live jazz on a grand piano too.
If you are in Cleveland for the nightlife and don’t go to The Velvet Tango Room, you have wasted your night.Walking in the doors of this seemingly dilapidated exterior is like stepping onto the scene of a bygone era. The mood extends through the entire interior of the building with impeccable style to match exceptional service. The warmly lit bar provides just the right ambiance mixed with fantastic live jazz at just the right volume accompanied with painstakingly crafted cocktails and drinks which are all made from scratch. Absolute perfection. The Hemingway Daiquiri is deliciously refreshing Caribbean taste and should not be missed. The Trinidad Sour, found in the “unclassifiables” section of the menu, is described as including a mighty dose of angostura bitters; it’s an absolute flavor bomb and not for the faint at heart. I’m smiling even now thinking about how much I enjoyed it. The Tahitian vanilla gelato is an absolute must and the perfect way to end your evening.
The front of the building is pretty drab, but I think its a strategic move to keep from overcrowding. This place was awesome. The interior is excellent, the front is well lit while tht back is dark and mysterious. At first I could not see intransition from front to back, but then everyones eyes adjusted surprisingly well. Drinks are probably the best in Cleveland. Everything is made from scratch. The waitresses and bar tenders were prompt, professional, very familiar with the menu and the drinks. I was here with a group of friends from work, we asked about a thousand questions and went with the hostess recommendations. The drinks were unanimously delicious. It was my first visit after living in CLE for 5 years. I definitely missed out. Standard drink prices are $18 but dont let that scare you away. They are well worth it, and arguably the best in CLE. I would highly recommend trying it out.
This place has the best cocktails in Cleveland! From the most classic classics to new recipes and everything in between. Youll pay for them, but thru are worth every penny! This remains the classiest bat in Cleveland, no other cones close!VTR is a great stop before or after dinner, but if you come early you have a great chance of getting a couple of seats at the bar, which is awesome because you get great conversation and a front row seat for some really cool cocktail making! Finally, you can reserve the back yard for private parties, which is a great way to enjoy VTR privately with friends!
Early Saturday, November 10th. Approximately 6: 45 pm.My buddy and I have been to this bar many times since its conception. However we stopped going out period in Cleveland due to the new arrogance that seems to be prevailing in this Great City. Saturday we were at a restaurant in Lakewood and thought - lets go to Velvet Tango we havent been there in ages. All I want to know is What The (expletive) happened here? The Saturday experience:1) Greeted by a hostess wearing what looked like her Grandmothers Table Cloth belted at the waist. Very rude with attitude.2) Was ABRUPTLY told I could not wear a hat in the bar. It wasnt a casual would you mind, it was a Sister Mary Command. Very Very Rude. This is Cleveland Ohio, it gets VERY COLD people wear hats as to not lose body heat.3) When I informed the serving wench that I didnt want water, she blasted back that because of the potency of their drinks everyone gets water. I said nothing, but I DO NOT drink unfiltered tap water in Cleveland Ohio. Im looking forward to extending my life. Anyone think of saying something like______________? No Im not helping your poor excuse of a bar out.4) I ordered a Dewars, splash of water.5) My drink finally arrived, it was more like a water with a splash of Dewars. It included a twist that I did not ask for. So much for the proclaimed potency of your cocktails. As my 84 year old Aunt told a bartender - next time you make me a drink, put some liquor in it.6) In synopsis, I hope you go under you give the F&B business a bad name. Ill spend my money somewhere else where its wanted.

2022-05-06Visited once and had a tremendous experience. The vibe is outstanding and whatever essential oils they have going on make it all the better. The staff are well suited to the environment and the drinks are on point. Seán as the expert bartender made all the difference with his superb recommendations and great tastes. I took his recommendations and it made the evening remarkable. 5 stars.

2022-04-04Fantastic, best craft cocktails in town. There are allot of great cocktail bars in Cleveland to get a drink. But this one is the best. Small plates to eat.

2022-05-24Velvet Tango Room bills itself as one of Cleveland’s premier craft cocktail bars, but this place just falls short in so many ways. We dropped in on a Saturday night around 8pm and were pleased to find two open seats at the bar. After waiting nearly 15 minutes for menus and water, we ordered our drinks- one house cocktail and a vodka martini. We watched as the bartenders prepared several orders before ours, and honestly it just felt like amateur hour. The bartenders did not seem knowledgeable when it came to simple drinks outside of the cocktail menu, and communication just seemed… off. The bar was full and obviously busy and the owner/manager was helping to fill waters, but without any introduction or acknowledgement he just appeared visibly angry and upset. Not the best look! Bright lights and a loud atmosphere pretty much drown out the live music in back. If you’re looking for a swanky cocktail lounge where you can enjoy quality drinks and live music, there are much better places in town. Sorry.

2021-12-06Absolutely loved this place. Great environment and live music. The bar tender (wonderful lady with short silver hair) was amazing. Worked with my table to find the best choice for each of us and was super friendly. The drinks were delicious. I wished I lived in the Cleveland area so I could come back more often!10 out of 10!
