I thought Donkey had good espresso before I started coming here. I used to think of coffee as a way to get an energy boost/ a tool for production, which is still true to some extent, but now it’s also something I get to enjoy as well. Townsend uses ethically sourced coffee (circus dog is at least, idk about the other ones), and it’s all extremely high quality. It’s also not a pretentious environment, which is important to me for some reason. My girlfriend likes their chai latte too- it’s her favorite in town. Definitely give this place a shot.
BEST coffee shop in Athens hands down. If you’re looking for a place to go for your coffee fix, look no further. I don’t even bother with the other coffee shops available in town anymore because Townsend blows them all out of the water. 5 stars for aesthetic, flavor, coffee options, and friendly employees/employers. Seating could be better and I wish they’d open earlier, but I’ve never been disappointed by Townsend and you won’t be either. Plus they love dogs, so you can bring your best friend with four paws and they’ll take a Polaroid picture of him/her (with permission) and hang it on their wall.
My favorite coffee shop in all of Athens. If you haven’t been you need to go!!! Their coffee is excellent,smooth, and flavorful. I usually get a iced mocha with oat milk and I’m never disappointed. The owner is very nice and has done a fantastic job at presentation and making this place what it is. It’s always a treat going there.
This is miles above any other coffee shop in Athens. Well worth going out of your way for. The coffee itself is comparable with some of the best Ive had in big cities (in and out of the US) and the owners are very professional but warm. There isnt room to study but its close to the library. If you want good strong coffee, go here!
A bit out of the way but we picked it because they have their own parking unlike some of the downtown places. Definitely worth coming over for. Fast and well made! Only suggestion I have is with online only ordering, wifi for those with poor cell reception here would help. Good Riverview seating with chipmunks and small animals.
We had such a great experience here! We chatted with the owners for an hour and they were great to get to know. The coffee syphon was out of this world (try it)! The oat milk latte we tried was great! They pulled a great espresso. They are relatively new to the scene, but they have a great thing going! We look forward to visiting again!

Best hot chocolate ever!! Dave is so sweet and extremely personable and knowledgeable about all things coffee and non-coffee. Brought in a friend visiting from out of town and she got the red eye which she needed for her 5 hr drive. Perfect location near Hocking river. Very peaceful, away from the hub-bub of Athens but close enough to highway and campus. Will be even better once there is seating inside and possibly offer a frequent visitor card. Thanks for quickly becoming an Athens staple. I have always enjoyed supporting small businesses as much as I can. Since my first visit, I try to bring more first-timers to try Daves creations and they end up loving it too!! Thanks Dave and see you all soon!
My husband and I have wanted to stop here since they opened and I am so glad we finally did! Awesome coffee, I had the Dirty Chai Latte and my husband had their drip, both were excellent. They also have a really nice outdoor space to sit in the shade and enjoy your drink. We cant wait to come back!
It was so nice! We even got to meet Poppy! Just remeber to order online. I had a cold coffee and got my daughter hot chocolate. Nice treat for our weekend getaway to Athens!

I wish they had more hours, because this is the most incredible coffeehouse in the area. Loved the sign he had up while State Street was under construction that said “coffee detour”. I’m not a coffee connoisseur by any means, and the owner gave wonderful recommendations! The atmosphere was outstanding and elegant, very modern and beautiful!
I tried this coffee on a whim one day and I am so glad I did! Coffee can make or break my day and when I get coffee from here, my day is made each and every single time, served with a smile! I love the iced caramel latte with oats milk, Ive truly never had a better coffee in my life! Love this place so much!
Fantastic coffee! Their cold brew is like no other cold brew Ive ever tasted, and their espresso drinks are excellent, too. The owners are both really nice.
Best coffee in Athens. Charlotte and Dave are coffee nerds, matching the right bean to the right grind to the right brewing method. Killer pourovers, amazing cold brew, delicious flavored and unflavored lattes, and nice pastry selections from Fluff and Athens Bread Co. And its perhaps the only coffee shop in town without wifi--a welcome respite from the typical productivity crucible model of the American cafe. Also, a lovely (small) outdoor seating area right on the river to hang with friends.
Beautiful coffee served by the kindest folks. Every method of extraction you could possibly want, plus a tight menu of delicious espresso classics. And a quiet location right on the Hocking River. Stop reading this and go there now!
I am a big fan of coffee. and I love pour over coffee I do coffee at home using chemex. I been going to this location from the beginning till now maybe 4-5 time. The owner ( family) are very nice people, I have a nice chat about coffee and they were very polite and nice to me. the coffee they serve is one of the best. I like court-steet coffee a lot but I think this one is my favourite. I wish one day they have a bigger space so student and people sit there and read and study.
This is my brothers coffee bar! Every time I go in for a cup of witches brew, it tastes just as heavenly as the last cup. The recipes never change and thats what makes it such a great place to go! You wont be disappointed in the least. I promise!

Pricey but GREAT quality. I got a Carmel latte which was over $5, but worth it when I tasted the really High quality coffee. Given the price I reserve this place for when Im looking to treat myself to a Very Quality, rich, delicious coffee drink.

Coffee was brewed very nicely, although there was no sugar in mine even though I asked for some. The tea honestly tasted like cold water with peppermint syurp. But the toffee coffee was pretty damn good. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk~ yours tryly, karen.
I read the earlier review from a woman who misrepresented the conversation she had written about, with the barista, at this cafe. She was nice at first, and then became quite hostile, and seemed to be pushy and acting like a bully toward the barista about not carrying a certain kind of milk that she told him he SHOULD have. I have never went into an establishment and told them they should carry everything I want. It was actually rude of her to be so pushy toward him. Honestly, I felt he handled the situation as best as anyone could with a bully. Their coffee is so good, they dont need milk, and there are actually a lot of non dairy options there. I will happily go back. They made the best latte Ive ever had, and they have a local baker with a wide range of yummy pastries. Best of luck to the tolerant barista toward the bullies. Better him than me!!!
Omgoodness, the iced white chocolate mocha and caramel latte are DELICIOUS!! Sweet, smooth, and not overwhelming. The oat milk adds something extra. The baristas are AMAZING, and even the others patrons are so helpful and engaging. Come. Here. Its worth the stop in.
They have really good coffee. Ive been there twice in one week, tried different coffees and not disappointed. I will got out my way for their coffee.
A nice little coffee shop just off US 50/33 highway at the Stimson Rd exits. Really convenient if youre coming into Athens on the Eastside on your commute and dont want to trudge all the way into Uptown just to get coffee/espresso drinks and a pastry. The location is also very convenient to the Bikeway if youre riding your bike into work in the city.
Will not ever walk in there again. Lots of mood swings by owners. Snarling at customers is just very poor business. We’ve heard stories like this from our neighbors also.
Went for the first time today and loved it. I got a cappuccino and my SO got a latte, and they were both amazing. If you like coffee, definitely give it a try.

Ask for Snowville... Get Interrogated.... and Told to Leave! Seriously!! So upon my second visit to this shop... I nicely asked for Snowville... expressed that I hoped he would stock it in the future. He said that the Kroger dairy was fine.... and that he could not afford Snowville. I explained that Athens espresso drinkers understand this... and even welcome... an upcharge for Breve with Snowville... and we were happy to pay a bit more for a quality local product. I was then interrogated if I got sick last time... and then laughed at. Then I had to actually DEFEND myself... and explain that I have health issues like IBS and sensitivity to conventional dairy.. never mind a strong belief in supporting LOCAL businesses that support LOCAL businesses. Then he laughed at me more and told me to get my coffee at the places in town that do care about such things! Honestly, it was outrageous. He even mentioned that he did me a favor the first time... frothing the junky half half that I let him serve me before. I knew I should have asked for more details... when he was utterly clueless as to why anyone would require their half half frothed for a latte! Regardless... my experience was absolutely the worst experience... humiliating, rude, and obnoxious! I did not even ask about where he sources his beans... but I am willing to bet they are not Fair Trade or local! We shall see how long Athens tolerates these sort nonsense. I, for one, will never give this shop another chance... oh wait.. I cant because I was told to get my coffee elsewhere! Thanks pal.
Its a very small coffee shop a bit off the beaten path, but worth the effort. The barista was quite knowledgable, and even provided a glass of Perrier gratis as a chaser for my double espresso!
A must visit for the many Athens coffee affectionados. Quality coffee and freindly staff. New hours make it easy! Also convenient on and off for travelers on 33 or Stimson ave. Parking availible. !

2022-04-04We usually stop at Donkey Coffee on our way through Athens as we return to Cincinnati from WV once a month, Sunday afternoons. We stopped yesterday at this place because we were excited to see that it was open. We ordered an iced caramel caffe latte and a dirty iced chai at the window, which was completely contactless (card only). They didnt have almond milk, but I should have tried the macadamia milk! Husband said the caramel iced coffee was GREAT - wonderful coffee flavor and not too much milk. Hes picky and was thrilled. This stop is SO CONVENIENT if you just want coffee as youre driving through on 32/50. A smidge expensive, but delicious for a stand-alone coffee stop.

2022-06-11My wife took a sip of their Bong Hill Nitro ($5). Oh My God. We walked around the side to a cute seating area overlooking a river. Cute place. Kinda creepy way to order (we spoke to a disembodied voice) Fyi: no inside seating, no cash, no public restroom.Wed stop again if in the area.

2018-07-22Stopped by for a good drink and wasnt disapointed! Had a friendly conversation with the owners about their renovation process and they even shared some pictures. My wife got the syphioned coffee and it was very neat to watch. I would recommend if you have a few minutes to wait!

2021-04-14Showed up right after they closed and the owner was still nice enough to make me a drink and walk it out to my car.. truly a class act! beautiful location right by the river, and the coffee is hands down the best in town. heck, its better than most coffee in columbus! i’ll be coming back :)
