The Neon in other cities:
I always LOVE my experience here! A cozy small town theater feel in the big(ish) city. They always have great movies that you can’t find just anywhere on the big screen, and even vegan butter for the popcorn 😍 I would recommend this Dayton staple to anyone visiting or living here!
One of my favorite places in all of Dayton. The movies are poignant and moving. The atmosphere is nostalgic of going to the theater in my childhood. I cant express enough love for this place in words. Definitely try their cream sodas. The berries one is to die for. I love love love their Baileys lattes. And definitely dont skip on some movie popcorn. Highly recommend
My favorite movie house in the Greater Dayton area. They always have a great selection ranging from Independent Films to good ol classics. The entire theater is clean, cozy and comfortable. The concession stand features local options for Coffee and Snacks. They also offer adult beverages. The staff is professional and friendly.
I love the NEON! It’s a great theater with great film options. And I respect the Board for enacting the vaccine mandate, which proves they care about their patrons’ safety and comfort. Potential patrons looking at these reviews - please just know that every 1-star review dated 10/1/21 is from a disgruntled Karen who has never even stepped foot in the NEON.Stay strong, NEON! Your faithful fans will stick with you. The trolls will move on to their next inconvenience to complain about (LOUDLY) by next week.
The Neon is my favorite local establishment in Dayton. Every single film that shows here is excellent and thoughtfully chosen by the staff. Ive been so impressed with their ability to bring quality movies to their audience even though the entire filmmaking and moviegoing industry has been brought to a halt. The popcorn and fountain sodas are the best of any theater Ive ever been to as well. If you love cinema, this is the perfect place for you!
Awesome independent movie theater. They get a lot of great limited run movies, the concessions are more varied than normal & all really good, and the staff has always been cool. Due to the movie selection, the crowd is usually great. Probably the most comfortable non reclining chairs, too.Downside is probably parking, and lack of late showtimes. But I love this theater anyways.
Great place for movies!! The seats are cushioned, comfortable and clean. A lot of options are available at the concessions. A wide range of alcohol is available. Tues is discount day with a great deal on tickets. This a is a great, cozy theater. I highly recommend visiting!!!
By far the best art movie theater in the Dayton area. They show fantastic indie movies you often cant find in other theaters, plus they have great alcoholic beverages, coffee drinks, and delicious popcorn. Fun, familiar interior and nice, easygoing staff. So impressed at how they try to interact with their clientel to decide what movies to bring into town and how they support local filmmakers. Theyre everything youd want in an arthouse theater and community business.
Great local theater showing more independent-type movies and documentaries. There are 2 screens here and their concessions offer the typical popcorn, candy, and pop, plus some alcoholic drinks and coffees. All the snacks and drinks seem well-priced too, compared to larger theaters. Love coming here.
I love this place. They play the independent or lesser known movies, not just the blockbusters like the big chain theaters. They serve alcoholic drinks as well as coffee and a large selection of drinks and snacks. And its all really reasonably priced. I love supporting small local businesses and The Neon is definitely doing it right. Awesome place
I am totally in love with this place!!! They show truly great, thought-provoking movies. The staff is amazing, and so kind. They serve popcorn, snacks, local brews, and cocktails. This theatre has personality and charm, and I keep coming back.My only criticism would be that the movies are not available for very long. Working regular business hours, I really have to make an effort to work a movie into my schedule at the Neon. They are sometimes gone in a week and onto another set of movies.Even so, this place is a true Dayton gem! Highly recommended!
Great place to see a movie! The movies showing here are independent movies, not the garbage that Hollywood sometimes gives us, and theyre hand-picked by the head manager. New seating is excellent. Plus this old-style theatre has a liquor license!!! The usual concessions are sold, but they have way more than that....many coffees, some cookies and biscotti, many alcoholic beverages, teas, various canned sodas and bottled water. A wide variety of special events are held here throughout the year. Go to their website and sign up for their newsletter to keep abreast of them.
Unique small theater that shows not only popular films but those you might not get to see in larger chain theaters. The prices are reasonable and the serve the usual popcorn but also coffee, beer wine and cocktails which you can take into the theater. Great experience!
Great movie choices and craft beer selection. Each experience will be different, and it is important to remain open minded! A good mix of indie films, highly accredited films, foreign films, and everything in-between. Also, Im so glad they are MoviePass friendly! I have been many times and will continue going! A real Dayton gem.
Seeing a movie at The NEON has been on my Dayton Bucket List for a while. After finally checking it off that list, I highly recommend seeing a movie at this theater! Its affordable, the workers were very friendly, the snacks and drinks are reasonable too. They also have a wide variety of craft beers to add to a unique movie experience.
One of the best Indie Film Theaters in America! (And Ive seen a few...!) You can tell a first-rate theater when you want to see ALL of the films because of their previews!! (And fabulous popcorn, outstanding beer, great coffee)! And its run and operated entirely locally. Whats not to like!!!
Adorable place with a really cool modern theme. They sell beer ($3+), popcorn ($3+ with half price refills), and coffee!! Wish I ordered some instead of popcorn because the theater was freezing! Get there early to enjoy movie trivia and maybe win a prize. Ive been once before, bout 3 years ago, and love the change. The seats in their theatres before were pretty bad, but theyve updated them to be very comfortable.
The only theatre I love going to. They always play the best movies you cant see in a regular theater. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. They also sell alcohol at the refreshment stand. The seats and restrooms are always clean. I love coming here to see movies.
They do an excellent job curating the movies here. A while back they had a bit of an issue with the sound system, but its fixed and a great downtown movie experience. They give $5 tickets to college students, so dont forget your ID! Nice they serve beer in an intimate movie setting; definitely a downtown gem.
The Neon gets the best independent and art films. The staff is friendly and seem to care about the theater and patrons. We have always found everything immaculately clean and in good repair. The concession area has a huge selection for such a small film house and offers many unique local items. Their popcorn is the best of any large or small theater Ive ever been to.
A true gem of the Gem City. Movies are curated well and the two features change every week. Excellent special events happen, too. Plus, the cheapest concessions compared to any movie theater in town, as well as good beer selection. Its clear that a lot of thought and effort goes into the running if the Neon, and the staff are all friendly and helpful. It attracts an intelligent and respectful audience of all ages and creeds. I try to see at least a couple movies here a month, though I wish I had the time to see everything they screen.10/10, will go again. Probably tonight.
A fun place to catch indie movies in downtown Dayton! They have a full bar + coffee drinks, friendly staff, cool decor, with two cozy theaters. Lots of cool history at this place too! Tarantino and Tom Hanks have watched movies here!Tip -You can buy online tickets and did not need need to have printed in advance.
When one is asked to suggest something to do in Dayton that is unique and is loved by the locals, I always suggest a visit to The Neon. I have seen over a dozen movies since moving to the area a few years ago and I have always had a pleasant experience. Ticket prices are fair, and actually a bit lower than large theaters with comparable video and audio quality. Concessions are also reasonable, even offering hot coffee from Boston Stoker (another local favorite) or a nice cold craft beer if you are up for it. If you appreciate Independent films over todays crowded blockbuster theaters or need a nice place for a date night, The Neon is the perfect place to visit.
Granddaughter and I saw Harriet movie yesterday. No crowds or long wait to get tickets.I enjoy seeing movies at this theatre. I tried the Cinnamon Swirl Mocha drink. It was delicious. The only con was rude patrons who arrived late. I always get the rudest jerks sit in front of me. During movie, one lady was on her phone and talking during the movie. A male patron told her to put her phone away. Why pay to see a movie and be a jerk? Sadly, she didnt put her phone away. I guess no one wanted to get staff and miss portions of the movie. There are parts in the movie where I got emotional😪. The movie was fantastic. Sorry, I was so upset after movie because of the female patrons, forgot to take pictures.
Love going to the Neon, its small, cozy has friendly staff. Also can have a glass of wine or beer and sit at tables before or after movie. This is where we usually see movies. This time we saw All is True about Shakespeare s final 3 years of his life.We thoroughly enjoyed it.Really like their movies and that they are community oriented.
The best movie house in Dayton, Ohio ! The staff is personable, pricing very reasonable for tickets/concessions and the seating is so comfortable as this makes for a most enjoyable film (great selection of quality movies) watching experience. I highly recommend the current offering of the movie, The Bookshop as it is truly a lovely British gem of a film featuring Bill Nighy (also in Their Finest and Pride) and Emily Mortimer (The Party) are superb !
Very small venue. So buy your tickets before you go or they just may be sold out fir that showing. Seats are very comfortable. Ladies.... expect to wait in line at the bathroom (only 2 stalls). Nice concessions at a good price.... in addition to the normal popcorn and candy fare they also had gourmwt coffees from Boston Stoker and handmade old fasioned sodas. Nice place and very clean.
I love the fact that there is a bit of a Cafe feel at the concession stand with a really nice variety of desirable and outside the box selection of typical fare here. The movies are always representative of things that many people will enjoy but may not get a chance to see outside the mainstream. One should always be sure to check whats playing here.
Great small (2 auditoriums) classic cinema. They offer a fantastic lineup of movies, some of which you will see at your suburban cineplex...but many of which you wont. Artist films with substance, a message, or just presenting an alternative perspective of the world cant compete against the mega budget, over produced blockbusters at the 16 screen venues. The Neon offers a place for these more substantive films to be experienced. Sometimes they even have the film makers present for a Q&A session. Convenient free parking lot just across the street. The staff is friendly, and the manager, Jonathan is a great guy that is truly devoted to curating great film offerings.
We love the rotating movie selection here, including some very interesting movies you wont find anyplace else. The weekly email newsletter keeps us in the loop about movies as well as movie festivals and special events. Love the annual Jewish Film Festival. On some big weekend showings the manager plays fun, quick movie trivia games before the movie with the audience and gives away prizes. The fresh popcorn is the best!
I refuse to go to any other theater in the Dayton area, mainly because I refuse to sit through fifteen minutes of commercials then come the previews and finally, FINALLY the feature film. Not so at the Neon. Comfortable seats, great coffee and concessions, coupled with a friendly staff. Not to mention very reasonable ticket prices and convenient parking. Try it; youll like it!
Support your local indie move theatre. This theatre is usually the only one in the area even showing the films that it projects. If this theatre goes away there are films that you will never be able to see unless you move to a new area with another independent film theatre. Also theyve got great tea and food (much better than any other local theatre in the dayton area) and a lovely personal and intimate atmosphere.
A quaint little movie theatre, reminiscent of bygone years during the times of movie theatres with one or two screens. This theatre brings you the best of a wide array of movie types from documentaries to foreign films to action/adventure to horror. Most are not main-line movies playing in the large multi-plexes. These movies are carefully studied and hand-picked by the head manager to cater to the crowd that frequents this theatre.
There are the big cineplexes with Imax and monstrous sound systems that rattle you to make sure you enjoy the experience and make sure you get your moneys worth. Then there is The Neon. Theirs is a venue for story-telling. Intimate. Personal. Impressionistic. From the buoyant newsletters to the single cashier to the fun refreshments offered (ok, yeah, it gets a little cramped at the concession stand/restroom pathway), you just know before you even enter one of the two theaters, that youre about to have a different experience with a film. I think the first movie I saw was Amalie in 2001 with my kids... half their lives ago... and we still talk and laugh about that night. There have been so many films since then and each one is as though I was immersed in the story exactly the way the writer and directors intended. Absolutely one of Daytons finest gems.
The Neons adventurous films, pricing, and friendly staff combined with its offering of local favorite Boston Stoker Coffee, alcohol, and a zen-like atmosphere make it the perfect date night whether youre sixteen or sixty-one.Plus, it sits adjacent to Daytons premiere Jazz:Blues Club Gillys and is a two-minute walk from the Oregon entertainment District.Your evening has just been planned!
Sophisticated films in an artful setting chosen for you by a studied gentleman with impeccable taste. Don’t miss the opportunity to see the diverse selection of foreign language Oscar contenders, great art films, or the genre festivals scattered throughout the year. If you want to watch mainstream films while munching overpriced snacks meant to hasten metabolic syndrome, go to the multiplex; if you want something better go to the Neon.
The Neon is a great place that takes you away from what may seem like the busy life. Its one of those small gems that you find from time to time in the city of Dayton. The movies are great and often are ones that you can not see in the major theaters. In addition to the small independent theater feel, the Neon features small eateries including a handful selection of good beer.
Saw Isle of Dogs here. Before the movie, an employee led a fun interactive trivia game, complete with some nice swag for prizes. Afterwards, they had some information, a dog, and staff from a dog shelter. I really like what they are doing here. They always have cool movies, and the staff is really great.
Ever since i made Dayton my home, The Neon has been my choice to wind down...or simply recollect my thoughts. Location is convenient, service always with a smile and after picking a glass of pretty good red wine, I can sit comfortably & transport myself to wherever the show takes me!
Every town needs an art house theater and The Neon is Daytons--Its really good! Our presentation featured and intro and quiz by the manager prior to the show (instead of a boring slideshow on the screen) with actual prizes. The films shown are appropriate to the venue and the presentation itself was great.
I love the Neon, its possibly my favorite theater in the area. If you like artsy fartsy movies, then this is where you go. You avoid the mouth breathers here that you get at the big theaters. You wont leave this theater with the guilt of threatening a group of teenagers with their very lives because theyre trying to impress the girls that are with them by talking over the movie and kicking your chair. Its a guilt that doesnt last, but its guilt all the same. I dont know, maybe they dont have a great home life, or possibly theyve recently discovered death for the first time by the passing of a loved one. Its unclear what happens in a teenage mind, and its been so long since I was one. NEVERTHELESS, if you enjoy artsy fartsy movies like the weirdly pro bestiality movie THE SHAPE OF WATER.... which was a strange thing to spend my money on in hindsight, or brilliant movies like the IMITATION GAME then this is the place to go.......and they wont be showing TANSFORMERS 9 (The Revenge of Heathcliff the cat), I already asked.
The Neon is an amazing theater. They offer parking across the street at the old Greyhound station. There are snacks inside and coffee and beer (probably other things to drink too). I saw Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri last night and it is my favorite movie so far this year. (Havent seen Star Wars movie that just came out) It is a drama with dark comedy thrown in there. Everyone should see Three Billboards! Frances McDormand is an amazing actress, I have always loved her.Trigger warnings thus follow.Examples of violence on the extreme end:Racismsuicidehate crime against a gay guyrape (as a topic-no actual scenes)domestic violenceP.s. I hope there is a sequel to this movie.

2020-03-11The was my first time at the Neon and I had an absolute blast. One of the things I love the most is the ability to buy drinks and snacks at a fraction of the price of a regular movie theatre.I bought two beers, and two boxes of candy and it only cost me $12.50. The staff was extremely friendly and so clean. The chairs were so comfy as well.

2021-10-02Love having a movie theater downtown. Always a great selection of movies and the popcorn is always fresh. The concession stand has a nice array of drinks(alcoholic & non-alcoholic) as well as candy. The movies tend to be very unique offerings not screened everywhere. The proximity to the Oregon District makes it a great date night option.

2018-11-06Cozy, intimate theaters with a consistently amazing, always rotating array of shows. Conscessions are extremely reasonable and the drink selection puts some actual bars to shame.Cant remember the last time I went to one of those chain cinemas because of the Neon and that is perfectly fine. I have a much better experience at a much lower cost, all while supporting local! Cant beat it.

2022-03-15Was very surprised when we went to the theatre tonight and was denied access to see a movie. We had masks and I had my vaccination card as I carry it in my purse, but my husband did not have his on him. Their restrictions are stricter than any place I’ve seen since covid started honestly

2022-01-11The new projector looks perfect and sounds terrific. Theater is clean and comfortable. Seats are a little narrow, but Im wider than I ever was.
