Taco Tontos in other cities:
Unfortunate… I typically order Toco Tontos once a week for several reasons. Of course, the food is good and I like to patronize small business, but my last 4 orders were wrong. Simple stuff that are typical elements. Missing salsa, jalapeños, the wrong Guacamole (my girlfriend is vegan), chips that have to be several days old, small burritos when I ordered large. It also seems like the staff is always different. OK, I get there a real staffing problems but this kind of stuff doesnt help their cause. A simple quality control Check would go a long way.
Very underwhelming experience. My nachos came as chips sprinkled with shredded cheese baked in the oven. Tacos were underseasoned and bland. No chorizo, or other signature choices that would have spices things up. Absolutely nothing that you can make at home in 5 minutes for a drastically cheaper price.
Good, friendly service! Pulled pork special with sauce added was excellent. Guac is like a puree. Queso was jarish. Tacos big but not conducive to eating, more like a burrito. Margaritas made with soda, so not the biggest fan of, but that is personal preference. Big portions, somewhat basic feels like a college food place= org location in Kent. They have vegan/vegetarian options. Learned later than brown rice was an option.
Great food, fun atmosphere, and cozy spot! We ordered the sampler platter for an appetizer and it was a delight! We even needed a chip basket refill. We had burritos and tacos for our meal. The El Biggo size is not kidding around. The taco sauces are an added treat! The sweet potato burrito did not disappoint. Great drinks too!
Do not go here. Terrible service and the food isn’t authentic at all. We waited over an hour for our order (while the wait staff avoided us at all costs,) before going up to the bar to ask about it. They told us they were sorry about our wait, but then it took another 15 minutes for them to bring out store bought tortilla chips. Every table except for us got their food and the staff was just standing around. We’re trying to be understanding, but it truly seems intentional. It was that bad.
Yum! We got the pulled pork taco which was on special and it was delish. One taco was more than enough, for me anyway. And you have a choice between taco, bowl or burrito. The queso is nice and the chips were tasty as well. If you really like queso, or have a party larger than two, ask for a large, or else its served in a smaller monkey dish.Drinks were good too. I got the grapefruit margarita which I loved, and my daughter got a drink called Agua Loco. They also use paper straws :)Service was friendly. There were only a few tables sat when we arrived, but it filled up quick and everything came out in a timely manner. We will definitely be back.
So the place is right up the street how convenient, been there a few times, big portions no doubt, I order to go, today ordered a chicken bowl, chips, Pico di galo and side of salsa, charged for all it, no salsa, no Pico, not worth the effort to go back but charged for it all , the few times I have been there its like a hangout for the employees, reading a book sitting doing nothing or texting on their phone, no one managing them , maybe if the people that run that place payed a little attention to their employees hold them accountable would have gotten my order right
The best value in greater Cleveland, hands down! You get food the size of the head of an 8 year old for LESS THAN TEN DOLLARS. Seriously, every time I order the check always surprises me.Lots of options for plant-based folks, so its inclusive without compromising flavor. Every trip here is a joy and a treat to myself.Do yourself a favor and try this hidden gem if you havent.
I cannot fault anything other than the service. The food and drinks here are absolutely delicious but as a local resident just a few houses down, remembering why i stopped coming was another story:The service is awful and unattentive. The only thing my server did was bring my food out, clearly more interested in loudly catching up gossip w the bar tender than her job. I gave up after a while and just ordered my drinks from the bar directly and bussed my own table. I had to ask for menus and even place my order at the bar bc she was so obsessed w her gossip that she never came back besides just to bring my food or ask until after i ordered and picked up my own drinks. This table was a wreck full of used plates and shot glasses before i even walked in as i saw thru the window. It remained uncleaned until the woman in the window saw me take the picture 20 min after i arrived and had the waitress finally clear it and wipe it down then she returned back to her loud gossiping.
Burritos were delicious. Scorpion hot sauce was pretty hot and delicious. Decent beer list. Do not recommend mixing the scorpion sauce and beer, but definitely recommend taco tonto. Quite a few vegan options as well. I live in Phoenix and this is genuinely among the best Mexican food Ive had.
This was a great place! Daniel our waiter was wonderful and eclectic! We had the pulled pork nachos, yum!! The handmade margaritas were amazing with orange, and lime squeezed in. If you like a spicy drink I recommend the habanero margarita but beware it is super spicy! They infuse the alcohol with habaneros themselves in house and have a cilantro one as well. Be sure to check out this hidden gem!
I used to be a big fan of Taco Tontos but they need to get their ordering system straightened out. Of the last 5 orders I’ve placed 4 were completely wrong. The previous 4 orders were supposed to have no meat yet to my surprise there was meat in all of them, there’s no way it was an isolated incident as these orders we placed at different times. This most recent and most likely last attempt to order came to use completely cold and wet nachos ($23 down the drain, and why were they wet??)…it was disgusting and inedible. I’ve done the whole call to get the order corrected and let them know there was an issue (spoke with Olive, who was very apologetic, kind and helpful) but the way there kitchen is run has to be fundamentally flawed because nothing seems to have changed. Maybe a bad review (honest review, bad experience) will help others because complaining to the staff hasn’t. I’d like to give them another shot but after this last time I’m all out of chances, shame on me for continuing to go here. The food is good when it’s right, but I’m done with this place, maybe they need to stop doing online ordering. Ive ordered from here and gotten my order back either completely wrong or containing meat (I’m vegetarian) which is a big reason I really want to stress why it’s so upsetting…if someone has an allergy and you mess up their order (either completely or containing items not ordered) YOU COULD BE SENDING THEM TO THE HOSPITAL WITH A CARELESS MISTAKE LIKE THAT!!!The only reason I stuck around as long as I did was honestly because of one employee Olive, who seemed very sincere and happy to help. If it weren’t for them I would’ve stopped going a long time ago. So thank you Olive for a great customer service experience.
The food... SLAPS!The drinks... SLAP!The hot sauce... SLAPS!Absolutely love this place! So happy I found one in Lakewood! I would drive all the way to the one Kent from seven hills just for their burritos. So having one closer is nice! Also, they have different weird/ unique food and drinks options everyday. So make sure to check what the special of the day is when youre there. You wont regret it!
The service we had there was completely unacceptable. She was just Meh and really just seemed in a bad mood. Wasnt friendly or social at all. We were the only ones in the whole place. The drinks we got were terrible. Dont recommend the pineapple habarnero margarita.. It was like drinking razor blades. 😳🤮
Let me just start off by saying the tacos are huge. Thats kinda their thing. They are fairly basic but solid tacos. There are some of my kids favorites and they can never finish one of them... So its a great value. Little on the basic side for me and the cost can add up if you start throwing in a lot of the add-ons, but you have that option.I got the burrito this past time and that was pretty good. They crisp up the outside which was nice. I got the chicken with pineapple salsa and it was very flavorful. We also got chips and queso, the queso was good the chips were very basic. Not bad, but not exciting either and I think we got the bottom of the bag cuz there were a lot of small piecesIm sure well go again and if you like a traditional taco without all the fixins this is a good option.
Great food& drinks& atmosphere :D vegan&vegetarian friendly menu, everything Ive tried there has always been very tastey. They actually use coconut cream in their Pina colada! 🤤 Its a relaxed spot to sit for a meal, and its on my shortlist next time Im just looking to sit at a bar
Im usually very wary about ordering food from different places because Im always afraid Im going to spend money on something and not like it. But I am SOOO glad I tried this place. It did not disappoint even a little bit. I ordered a beef taco and the thing was HUGE! I also ordered a steak burrito and it was decent sized! The sauce they gave us was with our food was beyond good also! Staff was very friendly! will definitely be a returning customer!
Went on a pretty busy Friday night, so no surprise to have a half hour wait. Server was funny and nice! Got takeout and they gave my friend the wrong order. The food was pretty bland and some of it was cold. I got a sweet potato taco and the potatoes were pureed... It was confusing and I didnt like it. Probably wont be visiting again.
If you are drunk and nothing else is open, this is a great place to get food. Ive had many nachos and these were by far the worst. The cheese was like glue and I had to pry the chips apart, not enough topping to chips ratio, very dry, and tasteless without the salsa. My son had a beef burrito which he couldnt which was tastless, full of bland rice, and over cooked. The customer service deserves No stars. but it is one restaurant we can mark off of our list in Lakewood.
I love how easy it is to customize your food here. They are always very friendly and weve never had trouble getting a table here (although there is always a decent crowd of people). The food is just so delicious. Their guacamole is one of the best Ive had. Oh, and the drinks are wonderful. I love their margaritas. My husband loves El Zombie. My daughter loves the mermaids that come with the drinks. Its a fun restaurant, family-friendly and I wish we lived closer
I really do enjoy their food but every time I order on uber eats & order chips & queso they send a side, like the size of their pico de gallo, of queso. not only can I only enjoy several chips but it costs $5 for that side of queso. that’s not only not worth it but ridiculous. I used to get a small cup, enough to actually enjoy with chips & not feel like I was ripped off. I love their quesadillas!
The food was not great at all. Well started out kind of ok, even though they poured the last of the bag of tortillas for our chips n guacamole dip. The entrees were so salty if they would’ve given me a hose of water I would have drank from it and asked for more. I kept saying it’s all in my head but the more I ate the more it got saltier. Then I get to the meat and it was just to much salt at that point, I put it down. I can never go there again, nothing was authentic and as we say in Spanish “se le paso la mano con la sal” (they went overboard with the salt). I do not recommend this place at all.
Ill never go to the Lakewood location again, went there today to pick-up my called in carry out order, some random guy tried telling me my order was on the table for Uber orders, told him Im not a Uber eats driver he says online orders are there too told him I called my order in. When I walked into the place every one looked at me like I didnt belong including the chick behind the bar she looked at me and walked away, finally after the random dude left me alone i just said Im here to pick-up my order I see it in the window with my name on it but once again random dude says oh those orders arent ready yet, the girl who didnt want to wait on me looked at it,told me how much I handed her the money, she so rudely tossed my change on the bar and walked away. This is the third and last time Ive been treated like this in this place, maybe they just dont like people of color in this place, so Im doing us all a favor and never coming back. Ill spend my money somewhere else where Im treated with respect and not feel uncomfortable.
Had a steak taco and a chicken taco. Meat in both had little flavor. The pic was awesome as was the mild sauce. Service was really good at the bar. Bartender repeatedly touched her face then poured drinks without cleaning up. Dont think she realized she was doing it. Made me glad I got take out.
Aside from the obvious-wonderful atmosphere and great food-the front of the house staff is great too. What I like about this location is that I always seem to see the same staff faces when Im there. I like that they have a tight crew and that Im waited on/served by the same core people each time. I recommend everyone trying this restaurant and bar out at least once. It wont be hard to come back once youve given it a shot!
They have excellent burritos and exceptional service. My burrito bowl w/ brown rice was made with rice that wasnt cooked all the way and the server immediately put in a new order and took half off the price. Not many places would redo your order and give you a discount. There was no hesitation to give me the correct meal that tasted good.
One of my favorite restaurants. Its in the regular rotation. Casual atmosphere. Cool staff. Interesting and fresh juice-based cocktails. While it is Mexican-style food, its not authentic, so dont go expecting that. However, I think its healthier than most Mexican restaurant cooking and it still feeds my Mexican food craving.
As far as Mexican or Mexican inspired food goes Im not particularly impressed, at least with their regular burrito selection and pricing. However this gripe mostly comes from my insistence on more authentic and spicier Mexican style cooking. I am rather impressed with their table service but found the cleanliness is a bit to be desired with food clearly underneath a few of their tables.
The staff is exceptionally friendly, and funny. The menu has gotten a little bigger since they originally opened, and has changed for the better.Nice vegan options, and great vegetarian options. The sit-down area is small, but comfortable. Youre not sitting on top of each other, and have plenty of room to move.Drink options are awesome, and their homebrew sodas are fantastic (especially the Ginger Beer). The food portions are astronomical, for the price.Be absolutely certain you go with an appetite, or be ready to take home some food.
Small little funky taco place in Lakewood, OH. Tacos are large and tasty but are really nothing special. Food is inexpensive. Seating (dining room and bar) is limited and uncomfortable. Bar offers unique drink specials. The place seems dirty. I have eaten here several times and I always have flies at my table. In the winter the dining room is cold and in the summer very warm--poor/no HVAC. Service is average/poor. Worth checking out for a quick taco for a cheap price but definitely better options/taco quality nearby.
Nostalgia drew me here, as the only other one I know of is in Kent, where I went to school. It did not disappoint. They bake their burritos which give the tortilla a unique quesadilla-like exterior and the interior is warm and gooey. Thursdays they do the Mad Hungarian specialty burrito, you have to try it!
Not what I remembered. Being a KSU alum I loved taco tontos. When my husband and I moved to the west side I knew we had to get take out. Unfortunately it was cold, sour tasting, I threw most of it away, and I dont think I will be back. The worst part is they held $7 more on our credit card!! Money is hard to come by during the pandemic. I paid and tipped for takeout, dont charge me extra!! The whole experience very disappointing!
Get the steak burrito, its the best. Dont make the mistake of getting the beef burrito, it doesnt even include tomatoes. I love how they grill it but I wish theyd use fresher ingredients. 2 stars for the food and +1 for having a bar. (EDIT: And +1 for new rear dining area, excellent addition!)
Excellent food. I ordered the Tempeh Burrito but with the potatoes on the side, good idea. I also subbed out the sprouts for jalapenos, because I dont like sprouts. Joe had the Hungarian sausage burrito special. We both had the Pineapple Habenerno Margaritas. WoW. Hot! Everything was delicious. Definitely going back.
Wonderfully! Small place but with enough tables for you to sit comfortably and enjoy. Wonderfull Mex American atmosphere great music played at just the right volume. Amazing selection of bottled beers and mixed drinks. I had their steak burrito and it was so delicious and fullfilling! Giant pieces of tender delicious steak with no fat or grissel. Definitely a new fav!
The beef burrito and tacos are really good...and huge. Most sides are sub par so stick with the burritos or tacos. They grill their burritos which is different and makes a big difference. Their original hot sauce is unreal and youre a fool if you dont try it. Not too hot, and great taste.
The chips and salsa were good, but the tacos and burritos were overpriced and dissapointing. I would get the chips and corn salsa for a snack but wouldnt go out of my way for it. The bar patrons were loud, obnoxious, and obscene, and there were annoying flies all around us. Overall, I wouldnt eat here again.
I havent been to Taco Tontos in awhile and was excited to make it there. Until the chips came out and they looked like someone re fried tostitos and placed them in a bowl. The chips have always been my favorite part. Also ordered the taco salad and had the same store bought style chips. Sad to say we wont be coning back. Barrio it is.
It always good, cheap, food, but Tuesday is wheres its at. Sneak in for a double shelled taco (with your choice of filling - Queso - Guac - Sweet potato - ETC) and a beer for $8. Im not joking when I say this may be the best *quality* food deal in Lakewood. Bang-bang. Its damn good .
I really want to give this place a higher rating because I appreciate what they are trying to do. Tasty Mexican style places are hard to find in Northeast Ohio, however they have the difficult task of competing with 2 of the best Mexican restaurants around in Lakewood. Nothing was bad...the service was a bit on the meh side.
Found this place on google. Was originally in Tremont at barrio which was not opened until 4 which was an inconvenience. Drove 10 minutes west and this place did not disappoint! My wife and myself had a steak and chicken taco which were wonderful @ The margaritas had me buzzing before I left. I highly recommend this place.
Stopped in for 1burrito , 1beer. Service was great , atmosphere was nice. Food..well if youre expecting a true or near true mex flavor, def a let down. Flour Tortilla is served cold as you would a wrap. The chicken and ingredients... it was ok. Sauce was ok. Last deal , its not a bad stop for a drink and good conversation, if your looking just to eat and not expecting a tex mex taste or mex taste... foods ok. Id stop by for tequila shots n beer , lol.
Man I hate to give small businesses 1 star reviews , but this place puts the BAD in BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE !!!! Nobody greeted me as I came in (which can happen) but this place is as big as a closet ! Worst bartenders ever, they talked abt each other the whole time I was there ! Not even to me ! I placed a order for a taco , never explained it , looked at me crazy when I ordered a taco with potatoes......which was on the menu. Ordered a drink never asked if I wanted another. Trust me. I am the least sensitive person I know , and I felt bad being in here . You need a restaurant overhaul......seriously, NOTE: ITS A TUESDAY WHEN THIS HAPPENEDIM NEVER COMING HERE AGAIN , DRUNK OR NOT
Service was great **** Very welcoming brite personalitiesAtmosphere *** I say it was ok, but I could’ve did without the bathroom smell. It just smelled of old water pipes and drains. Nothing disgusting just wasn’t pleasant to smell while eating. But overall they were really clean on appearance.Food ** Portians were good however for my first experience my food was very bland and lacking of any flavor that pops in your mouth that you would expect from ModMex spot.My rating is 3 stars but I would say it’s more of a 2 1/2 Stars. I will give it a second chance and perhaps go on a more busy day since that’s when most places keep their best staff in the kitchen. It was a Saturday at around 7PM though so I don’t know...
Burritos were poorly seasoned and wrapped, queso was made out of Velveeta, chicken was not seasoned at all and the straws were made from paper. If thats not enough reason to not come here let me just say it. The food is bland and unexciting. If youre looking for a quick bite, go anywhere else.
Been coming to Taco Tontos about once every couple months for the past three years and the food has been great. The last two times we have came in we had the tall female server with shaved sides she is a terrible server totally ignores tables doesnt ask for drink refills or doesnt even say anything when she comes to the table. She did not greet us and we noticed all the tables around me waiting for service. Not a very nice attitude when we finally ordered our food, felt VERY unwelcomed and pressured to leave when we stayed afterwards and chatted over empty beer glasses. Made several failed attempts to get her attention after the fourth time making eye contact with her and another server/bartender also putting my hand up to make a half wave to hopefully get what we needed to eat out meals, we gave up and did not want to stay for anymore drinks or dessert. Very disappointed, as we loved coming here for the food. Will not be coming back anytime soon.
This place has tonted me everyday I walk to yoga class for the past month. Ive looked longingly through the glass windows at the steaming burritos on the other side many a time. I start to cry and feel my emaciated stomach. It is full of things like aspirigas and broccoli, but not burrito, no burrito to be found. That is, until I stepped into the door of this establishment a few evenings ago. What was my experience? Dreamy, aesthetic, cultured. All are okay words to use. But if you ask me, I say, tontilizing. Very tontilizing. I will be back very soon. I have the day marked on the calendar. I have the menu item chosen. I have the crisp dollar bills folded. I have not eaten for 5 days. Im starving to death because all I will allow myself to eat is taco tonto. Not even Mahalls chicken wings will squelch my hunger. I am shy though, so every time I come to taco tonto I wear a disguise so they dont recognize me. I wear many faces. One day Im old. The next Im scruffy. Help me. Help me please. Help me by also going to taco tonto and eating so that they never go out of business. When they go our of business I will also go out of business, if you know what I mean...
DISAPPOINTED!... after visiting the place in Kent. First of all, I asked for NO olives on my wifes dish. It was a take-out order. I saw more black olive than chicken on her salad. Our daughter ordered a burrito. Guess what? It looked like her mothers salad...because it WAS a salad...not a burrito. My steak burrito was okay...but I could have gotten the same from Chipotle, and had a happy family.
BIG tacos!!! Man this place did not disappoint! FRESH ingredients, great chips and guac, and fast service! We came in for the first time on Ciñco dé Mayó, and expected a long wait and weak food and service. Could not have been more surprised! Sat right down, drink and food order taken super fast, and the food was awesome! Highly recommend this place, a hidden Lakeood gem to be sure!Oh, and the tequila selection....wow, just wow!
Service was good. Food was bland and tasteless. Maybe Im biased because I grew up in Texas, but who puts mashed potatoes in a burrito? My suggestion is spice things up, season the food, dice and brown/sautee the potatoes. Also use less potatoes and more of everything else.
Average is the best way to describe it.Steak burrito was good - I added corn salsa and jalapenos in addition to what it came with. Very good, filling, tasty. At $7.50 its probably priced about right. Nothing overly memorable but better than the appetizers...Tried both the guacamole and the queso as appetizers. For the price ($3 each) the portions are decent.Queso tastes exactly like the run of the mill Velveeta stuff you can make at home by the pound for a few bucks. Melted Velveeta and salsa, tastes like Velveeta and not much else.Guacamole is also not impressive. No tomato, no onion. Just very finely mashed avocado and I saw a few specs of cilantro. Its an avocado purée with some lime and salt basically. I prefer a guacamole with more to it - jalapeno/serrano, tomato, onion. Just something more than what it was. Also liked the texture of their hot sauce, thicker like they had some pureed potatoes in there (like chipotle hot salsa kinda) - but it was supposed to be hot sauce and there was no bite, mild sauce would be a more accurate description (maybe I got the wrong one)I think theyre off the mark a bit, need to do slightly better to compete with all the other food options nearby.
Excellent texmex food. Great vegan and vegetarian options. And as a tequila purist, this is the only place i order flavored margaritas. Theyre never too sweet and the flavors are spot on and dont taste artificial (which im fairly sure theyre not, but ive never asked so im not positive)
Tacos are amazing. The drinks make you forget how amazing the tacos are so youll have to go back and eat the tacos again. The lady didnt think i can eat 2 tacos but i showed her. I ate 3. What she doesnt know is i regretted it later when i was moaning during the movie. People though it was the wife and i making out. So, we got kicked out. She still hasne forgivened me for it. Either way ill be going back to eat here again.

2022-03-08Taco Tontos is great. Good portion sizes, unique options, and quality food. They sometimes go a little heavy on the rice, so I prefer to get burritos/tacos that have a potato base instead. Their hot sauce is also fantastic.

2022-06-19Great service and employees but the food (taco/burrito) is very underwhelming. First off it is the furthest thing from authentic. Most notably it is very bland, flavorless, and boring. Especially for the price, I thought it was going to be really good. You can go to other places and get the same meal for cheaper and it’s substantially better. That being said, I would not recommend. I would like to note again that the staff and service is great, so this is nothing against them as they are just doing what they are being told.

2021-08-19I’d like to start off by saying if your looking at the pictures and expecting an authentic Mexican style meal this business is not the place. I was so excited to try this Mexican cuisine when I ordered it through Uber eats but was sadly disappointed with bland food, unproportionate sized platters, burnt nachos, and unsafe packaging. The entire meal was put in an open paper bag. First and last time trying this business.

2022-05-31Large portions and great taste. I always get a burrito bowl and my dog nows the box it comes in and waits for his treats. Hes a very picky dog so for him to love it is a huge complement and also why it deserves a 5 star.

2022-04-12I’m just trying to understand how this place has good reviews. I would love to like this place but between this location and the Kent location I have never once had a decent meal. I have tried it half a dozen times and they fail to deliver every time. The chicken is the driest and most bland I’ve ever had. Far cry from a traditional Mexican style meal. La plaza, Hola tacos, and Taco Bell are better options lol

2022-07-02All the food was just very bland. They have two house made hot sauces that helped a little. The burrito el biggo was mostly just rice. The chips taste like tostitos. The margaritas were very good but expensive compared to other places. The restaurant is small and there isnt great parking.

2022-04-02Ordered “el biggo” chicken burritos which is just a regular sized burrito. Had to pay extra for beans in each burrito, and they forgot the beans in my burritos... I walked in to pick up and they seemed mad I asked for salsa.I’m sorry… I accidentally hit no salsa for one of the burritos. I should have just not gotten the extra salsa, their spicy salsa is barely mild at best. Oh well, I’m just not returning sorry. It’s definitely not anywhere near like authentic Mexican food either
