We have been visiting Shuhei since their location in Cleveland Heights. We travel over thirty miles to dine here. We have never been disappointed! Fresh, delicious sushi and their scampi bean dish is phenomenal! The service is incredibly efficient! Will always return!
The restaurant is beautifully decorated. I always order only one dish - Nabeyaki Udon soup and it is delicious. The only issue I have is that in an empty restaurant the hostess put us at the table by the bathroom. Really?! In a completely empty restaurant at 5:45 pm on Sunday! Very unpleasant experience.
TL;DR - great quality, great service, enjoyable atmosphereIt starts off in kind of a neat way, because it isnt visible from the road, theres a sign, but its quite unassuming. You drive around to the back of an office building and sure enough youll find it. You walk in and are greeted by a much more authentic sushi atmosphere than I was expecting from outside.Went on a Monday night, it was pretty busy but we were seated right away. Our hostess was very friendly and gave us some great recommendations.Ordered a couple (small-ish) bottles of sake, an appetizer, some nigiri and a few rolls to split. The crunchy shrimp tempura appetizer came out quickly, it was hot and delicious! The sushi was pretty dang good too. My favorite was definitely the crunchy spicy tuna roll. The tuna nigiri was pretty pitiful, thin and not as flavorful as Ive had other places. Unagi and tako were very good. My biggest gripe, and lots of sushi places seem to do this in Cleveland, is using JUST krab stick in their rolls, instead of making it into a krab salad beforehand. Makes such a huge difference in taste and it just comes off as lazy when it is omitted.
Been there for dinner by my self, since I came for business. The interior design very simple but giving very warm home feeling. The waiters dressed in Kimono, very nice.Ordered a Miso soup, fried tofu, fresh salmon salad, and sushi. The soup was ok.Tofu was good.Salad was so delicious, I dont remember when the last time I was so impressed by salad. The sushi came on traditional beautiful plate. The taste was not bed, could be better, but the structure was not good, when I just touched them, they are crashed, the sushi assembly was bed.So, 1 🌟 for interior, 1 🌟 for the salad and 1 🌟 for good service.2 🌟 reduced for the sushi since it is a main dish.
You know when the restaurant has been around for 30 years, there will be doing something right.. and our was just right right. We had a large party so I can only speak for me, my wife and my son as far as the details but I know everyone in our party of 20 were happy with their meal.. My wife had sushi and 2 Japanese salads, she enjoyed it. The only hiccup we had is with my meal, I ordered my filet mignon medium rare but it came in medium closer to medium well, I pointed out and they re-cooked it right away. My son had chicken teriyaki and he enjoyed it as well. Just to point out, all their meals come with miso soup, salad and rice. Very good meal overall
I came here for the sushi, I was a little disappointed. Nice atmosphere makes it 4 stars instead of just 3. But I had really high expectations. For an authentic Japanese restaurant, most of the sushi offerings were very Americanized. If that’s what your after then go here. It will be fresh and of good quality. It was just ok.
Two thumbs up for authentic food, nice setting and attentive service. Had a family dinner here and all loved it. The rice gives the quality of how the sushi is prepared. And here it is top of the line. An upscale but hidden place - by hidden I mean the entry to the restaurant took me a moment to figure out once turned in from the street and you are facing a divided 2 lane exit only ramp down... You want to check this place out if your a Japanese food goer
We ordered both sushi and hot meals. our table could all agree the sushi was by far some of the best we have ever tasted. The hot meals left a lot to be desired, however.honestly for the cost, I did not find this meal worth it. we will probably be back, but only for the sushi.
The staff was incredibly kind and efficient. The food is out of this world amazing. We actually ordered one round of sushi and then ordered a second round. It’s two days later and I can’t stop thinking about the sushi. Completely worth it. I will for sure be going back.
Great ambiance although Id have preferred a booth vs a table in the middle. Service attentiveness was good. I am Gluten Free and their menu is very limited for me. Decent wine selection, and we ordered a Red which was good. Ordered Admame for an appetizer which was fair to good, but not great. Could have been warmer, and seemed under cooked. I ordered something plain with smoked salmon and something with tuna. Seemed like a really small portion, but was adequate. Girlfriend received more food and took some home. Watch the green stuff it mild at first and can sneak up on you! Its good but the will get you if you let it.
Dont let the location deter you - this is a fantastic place to eat. Very beautiful and clean on the inside. The sushi bar looked very fresh and clean. The wait staff wore traditional kimonos and were very attentive.I enjoyed Korean fried tofu and an avocado roll. My friend enjoyed a tempura roll and spicy tuna roll. Cant wait to go back again. Very yummy!
Placed a large order for take out recently. We were disappointed with the majority of the rolls (spicy tuna, rainbow, tuna sashimi); they did not seem all that fresh and the rice to fish ratio was not great. We did enjoy the Tamago sashimi and Scorpion roll, those were better. Would consider ordering their cooked dishes again, but not sushi.
This is a hot spot for any date night. Always serving up the best sushi. Good service with a vibrant face to this restaurant. Highly suggest the Firecracker and Fresh Salmon Wrap. The prices are always fair here. My buddies and I are here at least once a week. By the way, the Sukiyaki is excellent for any cold night.
I really dont understand the hype with this place. We gave it a shot last week and ordered carry out. We were quoted a 45 minute wait for sushi which was fine but it took almost 2 hours for our order to be done. 4 rolls, nothing cooked. Seemed very disorganized. The sushi was ok but the customer service was definitely lacking.
The sushi here is incredible - very fresh & wonderful creative combinations! Even if you dont like sushi there are plenty of other entree options. Ive been coming here for years and the quality and service have always been top notch. The restaurant gets crowded even during the week, so call ahead for reservations if you can.
Love this place! service was great and the sushi was fresh and tasty. We split the Hand Roll Heaven. I didnt know each roll would be one large roll, but the waitress informed me and also switched it to 6 piece rolls so we could share it easily. Very authentic Japanese food and atmosphere. They even have tables where you can sit on floor pillows! Definitely eating here again.
Not bad sushi but a bit expensive. Its located inside of an office building and parking is in the back so its a bit hard to find. Once youre inside you will be seated by a nice hostess and the inside looks like what a good sushi restaurant looks like. Theres also a sushi bar where you can watch the sushi chefs make the food and it looks absolutely spotless. They also have a bar with a nice selection of alcohol, and their house sake isnt bad its just super expensive.
This is the best Ive had in the neighborhood. Good service. Not too rushed. The freshest sushi. My favorite is the Udon Noodle Soup. The broth is extremely tasteful. Tempura is served on the side. If you like to take out, they wrap everything so tightly so that a spill will never happen.
Ive been coming here for about 20 years and its always a great atmosphere for a calm date or a quiet family celebration. In two words, Shuhei is classy and comfortable, and Ill always recommend it over any other Nippon cuisine in the beachwood/pepper pike/orange area. The food is consistently delicious. Not cheap, but Ive never been disappointed with the taste and the staff have always treated my family well
A great destination for sushi lovers. Food was fresh, and service was outstanding. Servers are all dressed in traditional dresses and are very welcoming and polite. Despite hitting it a busy hour (all tables were occupied) it wasnt at all noisy and we felt we had a enough privacy at our table. We were not rushed to put our orders in or leave after we ate.The only concern is that the entrance is a little tricky to find if you havent been there before. It is to the back of what appears like a general building. You will enjoy your time at Shuhei for sure!
Id give 3.5 stars if I could. The food itself was very good with a varied menu. It was better than its competitors, but you could find Japanese food almost (but not quite) as good for much cheaper a little further down the road. The restaurant was very noisy, you would have thought you were eating in downtown Chicago. I think it is the acoustics. Lastly, the wait staff was a little sporadic, but not bad.
Really good food. Best sushi weve had in the Cleveland area for sure. My wife and I shared a bento box, a large roll, and a two types of sashimi. It was plenty (probably more than we needed) of food for the two of us.You should probably make a reservation before going. Dinner is pretty busy. We lucked out and walked in to a 10 minute wait but sounds like thats not always the case.Shuhei is on the expensive side. That should be expected given the area it is in, though, and the quality of the meal. Definitely recommend to try at least once.
Really disappointing. We waited a long time to be seated, to place our order and the food was really not great. The Rainbow roll was basically a bif rice roll with a tiny piece of fish on top for $15. The sashimi pieces were small and some tasted fishy. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants - not any more
This is my favorite restaurant in the area! Everything is incredibly fresh and so delicious! The sushi is the best in town, and the rest of their menu is equally delicious and filling. The staff is excellent as well. All of them are fun, friendly and make you feel at home. You cant ever go wrong with this place!! Wish I lived closer!!!
We have been going to shuhei for many years. Always satisfied. Not fantastic, but good. Not sure what happened today! The wimpiest rainbow roll ever. Measly portion of fish presented unattractively. Was told this is how they normally make it. I’ve so enjoyed a rainbow roll at many other sushi restaurants. Really disappointed and will likely not return.
This place is a little difficult to find its not directly right off the street there is a small sign and then you go down into the parking lot and around behind the buildings that are facing the street. This business is located in a back lot that you wouldnt immediately notice right away. Its definitely a quaint little restaurant almost hidden if you werent paying attention
Maki were large, 3 of the special rolls is plenty for two people. Edamame was very light on salt, this may be a positive for some but is not common. Main criticism is the use of teriyaki on more than a few of the rolls on the menu, they could be much better with other, more thoughtful, sauces. Service was very good, even during a Friday evening rush.
When you have a craving for sushi this is the place to go! The service is good and the staff is fast, friendly and effective. I was never a big sushi eater until I ate here with my wife. I usually get the hokai maki and the New Orleans sushi rolls, put a little wasabi and ginger on them and youre in sushi heaven! Trust me you wont be disappointed.
I say two stars because the people were nice. That aside, I have been to a lot of Japanese restaurants and I went here because of how well it was talked up, its location and sadly assuming the prices reflected the quality of food.Let me start with the fact I came here for an anniversary dinner. Big mistake. The regular sushi rolls were the smallest I have ever received at any restaurant I have gotten sushi. The quality of the fish wasn’t that great for the price, but hey, I know this is important, the rice was good. But MARKET DISTRICT offers bigger pieces of sushi. The service was bad. I am wondering if that was a reflection on our persons because everyone else there seemed to be on a first name basis and dressed exceedingly well ( which isn’t a shock given the area ). Our service was not good and there weren’t even that many people there. One of the rolls I ordered was never entered even though the waitress repeated back what I asked for. And I’ve waited less time for beverage refills at incredibly busy morning breakfast places. The donburi combo bowl of tuna and sushi, for its price and quality, was laughable. I don’t know what they think they are selling, but it wasn’t worth what I paid. And I regret my entree. The Koren Chirashi sounded like a good idea, like cold Bibimbop, and it was. However, the hot sauce that goes into it over takes your pallet and you can’t ever appreciate the fish. And my girlfriend the following morning does not feel well in the way you feel bad after eating bad food, and that was the last thing she ate that day.The “Too Long, Didn’t Read” of this isThe prices are a joke for the portions and quality and are most likely what they are for the area. The overall experience was very disappointing and I 100% would not go back. I regret not taking us to our regular favorite and significantly better Japanese restaurant. Thanks for ruining our evening.
This is not a sushi restaurant nor is it authentic Japanese cuisine. Its just a mishmash of -lets call it Asian-inspired- dishes. The sushi options are upsettingly bad - why does everything taste like old frying oil (even the raw items)? If you really want sushi, drive a little further and go to the Pacific East in Eaton.
Overall, the food and experience here was not bad. I have lived in Cleveland about 4 years, and am always looking to try new Japanese places. Having heard the hype and read the overall solid reviews, I decided it was time to give Shuhei a shot. Overall, the food and experience here was not bad, but not great. I can definitely find comparable selection, portion size and quality at several Japanese restaurants around Cleveland, for at least 10-20% less price. That comment goes for just about everything I tried (nigiri, rolls, hotpot and fried cutlets). So not bad, but Id rather spend the same amount of money at Gingko or ushabu for better overall quality, or get the same quality at a cheaper price somewhere like Mizu
Excellent sushi with fresh ingredients. Arguably the best sushi in Cleveland. Did not try the other non-sushi entrees (which people at the surrounding tables ordered) but the sashimi and maki rolls tasted very fresh. Dont be turned off with the odd location. Cannot wait to visit again!
We frequently go here for sushi however on Saturday evening we had a horrible experience my sushi had to be sent back twice and when I explained what the issue was I was told to just take it home because it was nothing he could do and stated you still have to pay for food I didn’t eat or touch and I did but told the manager this was totally unacceptable and I will not be back here and will let others know as well. Very unhappy and disappointed and for this we will never come back
I am very surprised at all the good reviews that this restaurant is getting. My family and I went for the dinner and the restaurant was filled with people, and naturally, when we first walked in, we all had our hopes high. But soon after, almost everything went wrong. The warm towels that the server brought in had some foul odor that you can smell from your laundry if you leave them wet for way too long. I was unaware of the odor until I used it, and my hands started to smell the same. Well, that kind of things can happen at times when everything is so busy. But then it took our server more than 20 minutes to come back to take our order. More than 20 minutes. And it wasnt that our server was absolutely crammed with his/her task. He/she was returning to the same tables over and over. When I finally informed another server of the situation, our server finally came, without any apology. In the ample amount of time we had in between, weve also noticed a few worrying things. There was a corner with tatami mats. The table was on the floor with floor mats to sit onto. Yet, an employer was walking into that corner with his/her shoes on. An employer was cleaning a tables, and out of two trays, he/she wiped one off and carried everything back in. What does that suppose to mean? Maybe everything will be cleaned once they get to the kitchen, but I couldnt get rid of the idea that not every trays may get proper wash. Also, the quality of wooden chopstick was horrible. I understand using disposable chopsticks, since that can help the kitchen staff a lot. But for the price range that this restaurant is sitting at, they should be using at least a better quality disposable chopsticks, not the ones that you would get for free at some oriental market when you buy an instant noodle. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time. However, the quality of the food was far behind our expectation. Apparently, the meat they used for Don Katsu wasnt of quality, and then it was way too dry. Suki Udon... well, while the broth and noodle had strong (maybe too strong) taste, the beef inside was... after you chew it a few times, there was no distinguishable taste left in it. Now as for Zaru Tempura Soba, well, the soba itself was not bad. Then again, it is almost impossible to make bad soba, and certainly it is impossible when it comes to Japanese restaurant. Honestly, I could make a soba to taste like that, and I found nothing special to give extra money to eat it in a restaurant. And the worst. I have never been to a Japanese restaurant that makes this bad Tempura. The outside was soft and almost soggy. The shrimp tempura was fine except for sogginess, but the zucchini tempura was not even fully cooked, and the carrot tempura was overcooked. How do you do tempura this wrong in a Japanese restaurant? It is almost a mystery to me.Now, our family did not try any sushi, and they might make better sushi. But as far as our experience went, this was a disaster. At first I was planning to speak to the manager at the end of the meal about the amount of time that our server took to serve us and about a few sanitary concerns. In the end I did not speak about anything but just smiled and left. Why? Because the food was not worth coming back and I saw no reason to waste my energy trying to improve this restaurant for possible future visit. However I am writing this very long review so others may benefit. Again, I have not tried any sushi, and those who were happy with this restaurant might have had very delicious sushi. Still, I wont be risking myself again. I sincerely hope that people coming to this restaurant have better experience than I did, and that there is better Japanese restaurant in this town.
Ive been here for dates, family events and would feel comfortable having professional meetings here. The staff are very polite and respectful, the atmosphere is wonderful, and the food is superb. I usually eat several things off the menu and expect to spend $50 per person.
This restaurant is the spitting image of a Japanese hideaway bar/underground club, except its actually a sushi restaurant. I immediately felt as if I were actually in a Japanese lounge upon arriving. Located in Beechwood, I immediately expected a high-quality culture-rich dining experience. Our server was of course, Japanese and dressed in traditional attire which was refreshing. Her demeanor was gorgeous, breaming with manners and she was absolutely eager to please us and make sure that we had everything we needed.Just, wow. Hands-down I received thee best service from a server at Shuhei restaurant in Beechwood. Now, to talk more about the food. We started with an appetizer of crab cakes with chipotle mayo. We were a bit disappointed by the potion size, which left us less than satiated. Once our entrees arrived however, that problem was resolved. My sushi platter was flavourful but not the best. Perhaps the fish wasnt as fresh as possible, but I also understand that due to location, the fish and seafood must be imported from the pacific. All in all, Shuhei is more than moderately priced and more than moderate when it comes to food, service and atmosphere. Its a nice little joint for Beechwood, but I would suggest larger portion sizes used for appetizers, and fresher fish used in dishes.
Had a small problem the way my raw tuna was prepared last time, had a tough time explaining it to the girl that answered the phone ,asked to speak to the manager, they gave me Rick to speak to, he was aces, very cordial and understanding, gave me my tuna tonight no charge, very professional, a credit to the class reputation that Shuhei has established, Thankyou.😎
Ambience - OKAppetizers - OK - nothing specialMiso Soup- incredible! I think comes with most meals?Stir Frys - Out of this world!!! My husbands stir fry was full of perfectly crisp tender veggies in a mouth watering chef made garlic pan sauce. Healthy, delicious and didnt miss the meat. Shrimp yakisoba I ordered was equally full of succulent shrimp and crisp veggies and house made tasting noodles - Yum!Cant speak for sushi, but the soup and entrees will definitely keep us coming back.

2022-02-08The staff was nice, the dining room was clean and the interior is nicely decorated. The calamari was tough and the portion sizes were extremely small for the sushi. In fact, these were the smallest portions of sushi I have ever seen for a California roll. We will be trying to find other sushi restaurants to try before returning to Shuhei.

2022-01-23Went here based on allot of people recommendations, was not disappointed, food was amazing, as first timers to sushi restaurants ( other then good quality, grocery store sushi) this was out of this world. We went with a bento box that had a variety of sushi, tempura fried shrimp and veggies, we also ordered the spicy tuna and it did not disappoint at all. Service was great, our server was friendly and answered all of our first timer questions. If your new to sushi or been eating it forever i highly recommend you try it!

2022-03-25Good sushi. A bit disappointed in portion size for price. Pictured was $65. Didn’t taste truly fresh but was still enjoyed. I think I will try somewhere else before returning here again.

2021-10-08This is a quaint little place that is almost like a secret spot. Service was very friendly. The fish was fresh and Sapporo ice cold. The prices were amazingly reasonable. I will be coming back again for lunch and dinner.

2022-05-01Been going to Shuhei since late 94. It always seems as though I have the same conversation with myself after a longer delay since my last visit. WOW! Why did I wait so long. Great staff and food. Sushi for me and lamb chops for the wife. Birthday dinner. The only downside is that prices have increased a little but well still be back.

2022-05-02I ordered the anniversary roll for lunch and was very disappointed. It says it comes with tempura shrimp and spicy mayo, but mine came with plain shrimp on the inside and a huge glob of regular mayo. Im not a huge fan of mayonnaise, just like a little spicy mayo on my sushi because it tastes different. For $18 a roll for lunch, I was not happy with flaccid shrimp and the glob of regular mayonnaise when I was expecting a crunch and something I actually want to eat. I will absolutely not be back.

2022-03-23I personally have never had a negative experience here and I’ve visited about 10 times now? The sushi is great, the sake is very good and the non-sushi dishes are all excellent from what I have tried. I love the atmosphere here and the service is very good!!

2022-02-18Sushi wasnt fresh. I ordered a shrimp tempura and spicy tuna. The shrimp tempura rice was hard and looked moldy the shrimp was turning colors. The dead giveaway was it smelled bad when I opened the box.. This is the first bad experience I had here. I traveled to get the food. Wasnt worth the wait or travel I just threw it out

2022-07-07Great restaurant and great foodWe had some sushi boats and a few bottles of wine and sake.Everything was fantastic and the service was spot on!One of my favorite places to go.
