Ive been driving up from Louisville to buy vinyl at Shake It since I was a teenager in the mid-aughts. I always find something new and interesting here - whether its a single from an obscure local band, a Live at Shake It release, or just the latest new release. Their used bins are comprehensive and fairly priced, and their selection of new vinyl is extensive as well, especially in niche genres. I always go here first if Im looking for garage or psych releases. They also have an interesting selection of ephemera - decade+ old music magazines, collectible figurines, t-shirts, puzzles, books. You can always find something thats not a record or CD here, too. The store feels old school because it *is* old school, and the staff has an extensive knowledge of anything you might be interested in.My only, tiny criticism is that their downstairs to my knowledge is only accessible by stairs, so if you are unable to use stairs (after breaking my ankle, this was a terrifying endeavor) then you wont be able to browse these selections, but the staff is friendly and helpful, so I believe they would fetch something for you if you werent able to access.In-stores are fun here, too! Stop in for one once its safe again!
You walk in to friendly faces and thousands of good finds. Prices are right on for the records, with the rarer finds being priced at market price (with maybe a few bucks added since its a brick and mortar store). Ill be back for sure - especially since my wife found more records than I did!
I stumbled on this place and Im very happy that I did. I bought myself a record player for Christmas to bring back my childhood memories LOL Im 57 and I appreciate a good album especially a rock or metal album. So I went into this place and I was absolutely amazed of how many records / CDs they have unbelievable amount of new, used and old. They have all kinds of old memorabilia hanging on the walls all over I was really impressed. You could hours and hours just looking at everything and Im pretty sure youll find what youre looking for if not youll find something that you just have to have. I really Highly recommend this place you wont be sorry and I will be back as well. And also I want to give a shout out (Im sorry I dont know the gentlemans name) that directed me into the right direction to metal albums and the gentleman who rung me up but they was awesome as well. Thank you 🤘🤘
This place is awesome! I always check out all the vinyl stores when I’m in a new town and Cincinnati didn’t let me down, especially Shake it Records. This shop is downright amazing for multiple reasons. First, the selections top notch. Second, the used vs. new selections are equally tantalizing and third, their prices, very fair and no price gouging to be seen. Honest, friendly and definitely worth visiting if your in the Cincinnati area!
Jim at Shake It Records is awesome! Very professional! My mother needed help with a very large collection of CDs and DVDS her late husband had and Jim came to her house to look through all of them and he even sent back one that was left by mistake with a thank you note. Very classy and professional! The store is very cool!
Disclaimer, never been to the physical location. That being said, the experience of buying from this store though their Ebay presence deserves an actual google review. I’ve bought probably 100+ records online and the one from Shake It Records was without a doubt packed the best. If ever in Cincinnati, I’ll definitely make it a point to stop by! Thanks folks.
The last place to find cool stereo equiptment in Cincinnati!Ive purchased plenty of records from this store, but they also have cool vintage stereo equiptment that is worth checking out. I had a problem with one of the systems I purchased from them and they were very friendly with resolving it with me... I hope they keep at it, because there is no where else to buy vintage gear in cincinnati any more!
Just getting back into vinyl after many years away from the hobby. Been building my collection up the past few months and this is the spot in Cincy. Great selection across all genres, plenty of new and used stuff at fair prices. But what makes Shake it special is the staff. Super knowledgeable and more importantly very approachable, friendly and helpful. They are passionate music fans just like us. Also the spot in general just has a great ambiance. Looking forward to many more trips and new discoveries.
Like the only thing Cincinnati has to offer. Dont know the guys personality but they are chill so must be cool. Im sure theyve heard a couple good songs from time to time. I bought an original lumpy gravy on wax there in February this year by Frank zappa at the best price possible. This place actually can teach you something. I would recommend it to anyone. Places like that are hard to find. Big shout outs.
I really really love Shake It records. This was my second trip to this store in like 8 years. But I had laid off the records for a while. Lets just say our vinyl addiction is outta control at the moment. This store has stayed true to its roots all these years. Its probably gotten better actually. It reminds me of what Better Days records in Louisville use to be like back in the 90s. Anyway, this store doesnt disappoint. If you need a vinyl fix, you gotta stop by this place. They have a really great selection of new and used records! And the owner threw in a really cool novelty Tempest Storm 7inch on Third Man records as a bonus. Lets just say Im not going to let another 8 years pass by before I head back over there...8 weeks...maybe at the most! Keep up the good work fellas! Cheers.
This store is great! I highly recommend this place for the selection, the staff is courteous, the atmosphere is amazing, meditative and otherworldly, and the layout of the store is great. Even though this place is an hour drive away, for me, its my absolute favorite spot to go for RSD. Their setup for RSD is so great that I wake up early to stand in line and absorb the anticipation and excitement until the doors open. This is one of those places that always has at least one hard to find title that Ive been passively and casually searching for for years each time I visit. This place really carries the torch of nostalgia and embodies so many of the elements of record stores that Ive loved, which no longer exist due to modern day convenience. If youve ever loved a record store that no longer exists I recommend visiting Shake It because its kind of like the heaven where all deceased record stores go to after they died. Its therapeutic in that sense.
A classic music store everyone should check out when visiting Cincinnati. Great vinyl selection (both new and used), extensive 45 rpm selection, new and used turntables, receivers and speakers, both higher quality and budget. I hit Shake It Records every time Im in Cincinnati, which is several times per year, love it.
The finest record store in Cincinnati, hands down. Fantastic selection of new and used stuff. The staff obviously understand the importance of music, truly love it, and run the place accordingly. Lots of books, too. Im not very familiar with many record stores across the country, but Ive been to a fair amount, and none of them are nearly as good.
Anything I say here would be a disservice to how AMAZING this place is. The best staff, best selection, and best atmosphere. I’ve been shopping at Shake It for nearly 15 years and I couldn’t dream up a better record store if I tried. They’re not only dedicated to their customers, but also to preserving Cincinnati’s influence in the national music scene. I’ve been to record store across the country and across the world, and non truly compare to Shake It. Whether you’re passing thru Cincinnati, or a local, this is a place you MUST visit. Thank you Jim and Darren for providing Cincinnati with a true gem.
I LOVE this place. Has thousands of records. I have made some great finds. They can even order things for you, and you can pick them up next time you visit. They have everything music. Heck, I even picked up a few cassettes for my car tonight. They also have great tshirts and an interesting assortment of toy collectibles.
Great local music shop. The ground floor has tons of CDs, and the staff is helpful in ordering anything they dont have. The basement has a good selection of vinyl records. They are always playing interesting music, and the interior decoration makes you feel like you are in a music hall of fame. They also occasionally host events here.
Visiting this store is a really fun experience. They always have something playing, when I last visited they had a Rodney Dangerfield comedy album playing which was fun to listen to while browsing. There are tons of music options here so if you are looking for a record, tape, or cd you wont be disappointed. I absolutely recommend stopping by, even if you dont have any specific music in mind to buy at the time.
I grew up in this neighborhood and I’ve heard amazing things about this place for years! But I’d never taken the time to really check it out. Hubby and I got to leave the little one with my mom and go for a walk down Hamilton. This place was the perfect stop.Along with a ton of music, they also offer a very interesting selection of books and movies! It’s very easy to spend a full hour here and find a few things to take home.
Nice shop to spend an afternoon digging around. Covers all the bases whether youre looking for new or used vinyl, books and comics, used hifi gear, rarities, commons, trinkets, etc. Carefully curated and right about on market pricing. Neighborhood has plenty of other amenities like fancy coffee and Nepalese food (highly recommend). One of the must stop spots for crate-diggers visiting the nati.
The best record store to go to in the Cincinnati area. They will have anything you could possibly want and they buy your music at a great price. It is a music lovers heaven. Their catalog is so vast and they are always bringing in great new stuff. Everything is also fairly priced so you wont necessarily break the bank there.
Fantastic spot. Friendly and helpful staff. One employee even did some google-fu about a guitar strings question for me. And oh my god their fuzz/metal selection is impeccable. Great prices on used Rock. They have a good amount of specialty records, picture discs, even some signed stuff. My only complaint is I cant come through without wanting to spend all my money. I will be back to this wonderful spot.
Great selection of music to choose from. They also have record players and a vintage selection of books to choose from as well. Overall, a really cool place. I definitely recommend stopping by and checkin it out. There are some great places nearby to eat or have a delicious cocktail as well.
Scored some tight jams and fat new flavors. Some stuff is expensive but for the most part worth it. One of the better record stores in Cincinnati. Great ambient, weird folk, left of center stuff. Spent the most money Ive ever spent on a dub record in my life here. Go downstairs, dont miss it.
Besides my family, this place might be what I missed the most about Cincinnati when I went away to college.... but now Im back so I can go whenever I want. Great record shop, with such a laid-back vibe & awesome people that work there. There used LP sections are second to none & they also just added used books which is dangerous!
Ive been to a few music stores around the country, and Shake It is one of the best. Really expansive rock+variations (punk, indie, metal, classic rock) selections, for both new and used vinyl and cd, with smaller offerings in blues/jazz, classical, folk/country, and a too small offering of reggae and hip hop/electronic. Lots of books and paper publications. Modest stereo equipment selection. You can even find a few laser disc and cassettes, some vinyl/cd rarities, and a few Shake It exclusives. Even if youre just visiting Cincinnati, Shake It is worth checking out.
This place is awesome. Its indie heaven. Books mags comics video and oh yeah... Music too. Down stairs is where the vinyl is. They have a great collection. Its not stacks of beat up records nobody want. They do a great job curating. And prices are responsible. They also have kid robot toys and used turntables.
Shake It has only improved over time. Their selection across all genres is on point, and digging through their cheap used albums or paging through the eclectic book selection is always fun. I wish more of their tshirts were available in womens sizes, but it keeps me from overspending so thats not really a complaint.
Shake It Records is just a really great record store with two stories of wall-to-wall music. You can buy new and used CDs, cassettes, vinyl, books, knick knacks, shirts, and record players. The store is well-stocked and the staff are friendly and willing to help you find somethings new. I like that you can also get local music here. Definitely worth your time!
Theres more than records to be found at Shake It- greeting cards with just the right amount of snark, band t-shirts, books on just about every topic (for kids, too), and enough little plastic figurines to make an army. The shop is well organized and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable.
A staple of the Cicni music scene and this place is huge! Tons of new and used vinyl, CDs, stereo gear, and collectable oddities. From Pop, Classic rock, 80s, to soul, jazz, hip-hop, and back to indie, metal, and punk, Shake It has a swath of genres, titles, and artists to cover everyones preferences.Prices are reasonable and every used lp can be listened to on several listening stations.
Very rude, called on phone, asked about getting a price on a large collection of records i inherited, was cut short, talked over, told not to waste their time or mine 😲. Wish i would have gotten a name of whom i talked to because id come visit and see if u would talk to and treat me that way in person, take u out back for a little chat, and give u some attitude therapy. This person was working at 11:20am on Jan 21, 2021, doesnt need or want ur business, has no time to talk to or deal with u. Douchebag
Been shopping at Shake it Records for over three years now. First time walking into the store was like a blast from the past. I was surprised to see that they stocked Black Metal and also would order albums if requested. The service is exceptional, each employee will help the customer with any questions about audio. Very friendly too I might add. The store is stocked full of everything audio: Turntables, receivers, speakers, CDs, LPs, 45s, 10 inch, styli, headphones... If you can think of it, its there. Not to mention the place has a pleasing layout to the store. This place is not only perfect for buying music but also going into an Original Record Shop and getting a taste of what it really is, because lets face it theres not many of these stores around (especially ones that are as great as this store/selection) that offer as much as Shake it Records. If youre ever in the area, its definitely a place to stop by, even if youre not buying anything.5/5 Stars, definitely why I love Northside!Shake it Records: Shake it Baby!!-Kevin.
Cool place, but doesnt have the selection im looking for. Hip place with a lot of reprints. the used stuff, which I prefer goes way too quickly. They have a decent little selection but as far as vinyl shopping goes around cinci, there are better places for me. I know its enjoyed by many people, but for me, Im just looking for something with a larger selection of used records.
Best record store in Cincinnati. If youre looking for vinyl records, Shake-It is the the place to go! The entire basement is full of vinyl. They have everything from used classic rock and blues LPs from the 50s and 60s, to brand new sealed copies of your favorite bands of today. They also have cds on the main floor I think. (Why would you buy CDs?) Pick up a turntable, speakers and stereo from the back room and start enjoying the warm joy of vinyl today.
Lets just say that I walked in, was about to leave, and saw a copy of Mother Earths Plantasia by Mort Garson with my name on it.Ive been shopping here for 5 years now. I dont live in Cincinnati anymore, but I try to make it here when I can. The staff ships anywhere in the US. I want to support this place as much as I can, as they are deeply rooted in the local music scene and keep it alive and well.*edit* I live in Cincy again & Shake-It STILL BANGS
Excellent music selection... can count on finding something, whether you have something specific in mind or just want to wander and grab a few affordable or brand-new selections. Also- exciting zine/comic/book selection, gorgeous cards, and a range of speakers and record players. Just an all-around treat! 💌🍬🍺
Wow! Vinyl selection is out of this world. I moved here from NYC and this place puts every record shop there to shame. I just found out about this band and listened to some samples on *ahem* a major internet site and figured Shake It has had everything else so I tried Shake It first and of course they had it. For me I’d much rather have the vinyl with a digital download than pay the internet which won’t put money in anybody’s pockets anywhere near here. These guys straight up earn your business.
The stylus on my vintage turntable broke and I needed a replacement without a clue what I needed. Gave them a call and they thought they had something that would work. Went in and after a few minutes they had be set with a new needle. Cheaper than it would have been to get something on the net too. My friend and I have been here several times. One of us or both of us seem to always find something to walk out the door with in our grasp. Thanks again!!!
After finally getting into records again wanted to find some new stuff quick. I didnt have time to wait for mail to deliver. Grabbed some gorillaz albums and was nothing but pleased the selection is phenomenal. If youre a metalhead, rap fiend, or punk fan, they have it all!
Good Selection, Weird Owner.I was able to get about 8 records including some Aerosmith and some Yardbirds, but when I went to go purchase, I asked to make a bundle deal. The total value was about $33.50, and I asked to make a deal for $28, and the guy went berserk. The older man with the glasses(the owner) started complaining about how there were so many record stores and he was having issues with some connection in Michigan...? If you want a good record store, there are great ones in Columbus, Louisville, and not to mention 19 other record stores in Cincy. Overall bad!
ITs sad in this day in age, when one lives near a major city like Indy and CANT find the music readily available (what we are looking for) when walking into a particular establishment! So its off to the internet..... time to search for some better places that will serve the needs accordingly. Of course within a two hour drive....i.e. Dayton Columbus and Cincy.Came across SIR and started reading the reviews. Plenty of grand accolades and then some. Was esp interested in what had to be said bout the stores jazz section. So we took a chance and slepped on down to Cincy town to investigate. Was pleasantly surprised when we walked in----downstairs actually----and saw a rather rousing selection of NEW as well as USED jazz. Combing thru the new reissues -saw many things we were looking for inc Jackie McLean Hank Mobley Kenny Dorham Archie Shepp etc. Picked up some good used goodies too-Richard Grooves Holmes Shirley Scott Buster Williams. And to add to icing already smoothed over these choice picks--snatched up a few Queen Ida lps and a sealed Leroy Hutson release that came out of the soul section. Very good. The prices on everything were fab-nothing overpriced or whathaveyou!Def well worth the two hour plus ride-each way-to get what we wanted.Viva La SIR

2022-05-02Shake it Records is a gem of a record store. I travel North America for work and have the opportunity to stop at different shops along the way. Shake it Records had super friendly staff, great selection and good prices. Not only will I be back, I recommend if you’re in the area you stop by!

Everyone who works there is friendly and more importantly to me KNOWLEDGEABLE in all music especially metal and Psych!Unexpectedly they had stock of albums that I was looking for for months that the labels site and bands website were sold out of .So much obscure music and popular stuff at the same time .Ive been going there since 2002. A beautiful record store in cincy!

2022-05-19Been going here since I was a teenager back in 2001. They’re still going strong and have even increased a lot of their vinyl selection over the years. Clean store. Friendly and knowledgeable.

2022-01-09Nice record store with lots of new and used vinyl. I didnt find many of the ones I was looking for but any store is hit or miss for what Im looking for. Im not big into punk but they probably have the best punk vinyl selection in the Tri-state. They also had a modest selection of new vinyl and Im betting they could probably order just about anything new.

2022-02-19Went there for the first time today and was beyond impressed. Everyone is knowledgeable and incredibly kind. They got a record in for me and called me when it arrived, and when I was there and picked it up they helped me with my decision to buy my first turntable... Without ever trying to upsell me! They really are in it for the music!

2022-01-24Love this record store. Everything from jazz to weird stuff youve never heard of. Great spot for finding rare or out of print albums. Keep an eye on their Instagram to get the skinny on new used collections they purchase.
