This was a very nice store. I am unsure of the prices due to me not purchasing anything, but they did have a very large variety of books and other small items. Everything was relatively easy to find and the employees were extremely helpful. Dont forget to take a look upstairs and in the basement!
I love this book store so much! I have been shopping here since the mid nineties and Im never disappointed. The staff is friendly, the selection is awesome, and you can turn in your old books for store credit. Great place!
I love this place. It was one of my first introductions to an independent bookstore a little over a decade ago. Friendly staff, great selection, cozy atmosphere.More accessible entrances and exits would be wonderful, my grandma wasnt able to go in anymore toward the end of her life, but with these old buildings its pretty understandable.All in all a really great place to be.Plus it always smells good because its connected to Tommys. Yum 😋
Pretty cool place. Very helpful people and incredibly enthusiastic. I described a book to one of the employees without the title, as I was looking for similar and tangential books, she knew the book immediately and then she zipped around the store knowing exactly what she had amount hundreds of used and new books. It was amazing. Thanks for your help.
At first, seems like a nice hole-in-the-wall local bookstore. I want to like it. However, their selection isnt great, the prices are way too high, and above all the staff are INCREDIBLY rude. They stare at you, dont return friendly greetings and GOD FORBID youre trying to get a job here. Youll be ghosted after they decide you arent well-read enough.
Wanted to visit but they are enforcing masks, still. The mask mandates are over. Let people choose.
Macs Backs is my favorite bookstore in the Cleveland area and elsewhere. The staff is great and so knowledgeable. They have great recommendations. Go to place for hard to find books. If they they dont have it on the shelves, they will do their best to order it in. They once searched a whole week for me to find an out of print book. They are the kindest people and are great booksellers.
What a bookstore!They mostly sell used books, but have a good selection of new ones and, of course, can order anything you want or need.Get lost downstairs, or head upstairs to find more.Ask to see their local authors–this is a store that celebrates local.And if youre next door at Tommys, browse the books while youre waiting for your table.
I cant say enough good things about this poets and writers paradise. The staff is incredibly friendly, and the sheer volume of its collections is staggering, as well as lovingly tended and curated. Unusual and out-of-print oddities abound here, and theres a sizeable selection of poetry chapbooks alone. I would walk 500 miles to visit this place
Awesome, cozy, local bookstore that happens to be connected to Tommys next door. After you finish eating, you can cross over and look at some books. Love the smell of the place which just smells like worn paper. Staff is friendly and helpful.
Ordering books online at Macs Backs got me through the start of the pandemic. I plan on doing as much of my Christmas shopping there as possible. Will order a book for my wife the second I hit post on this review.
I had special ordered a book and came in a bit early to pick it up. Their shipment had just arrived (many boxes) and it wasn’t clear where my book was. They spent a great deal of time looking unsuccessfully for it. So after they apologized several times I left. I had just gotten to my car when Macs’s called to say they found it. They had never stopped looking! The staff is always informative and courteous. It’s always a treat to visit and chat.
Best independent bookstore in the Cleveland area. Suzanne Degatano supports local talent by shelving books other bookstores would not, and with book signings, readings and many other events. The best new and used books in the Cle! If they Dont have it, they will order it for you. Please go and support this great bookstore.
Local, independent, knowledgeable staff, and community events. What else is there to want? One thing to note is their buyback program. They do not provide cash, they provide in-store credit which can be applied to reduce the price of used books by half. I am a fan of this feature because it encourages re-use of books without waste.
I love Macs Backs. They are my favorite go to for books new and used. If they dont have something they will always order it for you with a smile on their face and have it in their store just as fast as they can get it. They are always friendly and helpful. No matter what my mood, it is always better when I walk in there. If you read, make sure you patronize Macs Backs.
Great customer service. Everyone I came into contact with on the phone and in person was very friendly and helpful. They were organized in the way they handled changes due to COVID-19, offered curbside pick-up, etc. I am happy to keep supporting this independent store.
Macs is a staple of Cleveland for me I try to go every time Im in the area. Their selection of both big and small publishers and presses keeps me coming back.
I love this store definatley worth a visit. I found a book that I had been looking for that I always forgot to order online!!!!!!! Also the lady at the front register was really nice ( helping me find titles).

A fairly large independent book store offering a mix of new and used books. A bit too heavy on new books for my taste.
They are very kind, and so helpful! They will search high and low for something, and if they dont have it, they can get it, usually within a couple days.
I always stop in here and find something I want to read and special order when its not on the shelf. Been going here for books, graphic novels and magazines for a couple decades now and its been around about twice as long.

2022-05-07Independent bookstore selling new and used books. Different sections ranging from sci fi to poetry. There is something for everyone here. Check out the tote bag collection for a different look.Masks required in the store. Varied selection of books you may not be familiar with. Definitely worth a visit!

2021-11-23My favorite kind of store! Lots of different offerings, both new and used, and a relaxed, cozy feel. Cool loft upstairs with sci-fi and graphic novels, basement with non-fiction, and YA/kids/fiction on the ground floor. Plus lots of book-related merch like t-shirts, tote bags, jigsaw puzzles, and bookmarks.A little something for every readers tastes, and some rare treasures. Can see why this place is popular. Owners were delightful people also! Would make this a Cleveland destination for the future.

2022-07-05Came here because a Facebook group said this was a must see. 3 floors of used books and some new!! Took daughter for her birthday she is a avid reader its mostly new a few used! Not that big of a store. We bought 3 books $36! It was a birthday. I would have went on Amazon or books a million and paid the same. Wont go back wasnt impressed! But it was busy lots of people popping in and some buying. They do practice social distancing and masks! That impressed me. Thank you for keeping people safe.

2022-09-01You have to wear a mask and they provide them. Extremely uncomfortable and its 9-1-22.Its also against your freedom to the right of your body, autonomy.They lost a customer of 20 years. If you are scared, get vaccinated, what are you STILL scared of. Dumb. I still see people driving in their cars, walking, alone, wearing a mask.Im surprised theft crime didnt escalate.Now anyone can be incognito, I suppose.And.....

They have a great selection of books including literary magazines, local authors/interest and theyre attached to Tommys! Its a great local bookstore and I encourage anyone in the area to check them out.

2021-09-10Really cool book store with a pretty good section for paperbacks. Only things I think they could improve on are expanding their film books section, not a lot of those at all, and they could definitely do with some more horror genre books. Aside from that the place is outstanding.

2021-07-24Macs has done a great job keeping me reading during the pandemic. Its sparked an unreasonable amount of joy to be able to live so close to such a cute bookstore. Their collection of books is unique and eclectic, and theyre always quick to order anything specific Im looking for. I always look forward to visiting!
