This is a wonderful place to spend time. I went there a few times during the 2 weeks I was in the area. They have a gift shop with framed photos of the mill and waterfall as well as the covered bridge over Mill Creek and part of Mill Creek Park which has the Silver Suspension Bridge dating back to 1895 and other waterfalls and lots of hiking trails. The old mill is well worth the trip through to watch it in action. Very fascinating.
Such a stunning and picturesque old mill. Glad to see funding was raised to restore and preserve this piece of history. A covered bridge was also built in 1988. Got there early and they wasnt open until 10:00 am, but was able to view everything outside. They also have outside restroom facilities available.
We seen on your website that you were open on Sunday for tours! We drive 2 hours to see the mill and the inside of it! We tried calling the # and of course, no answer! Your hrs are posted beside the door! You need to update your hours and be there when you say your open! Gas is not CHEAP by no means to drive 2 hrs to find the doors are locked! We were not happy at all....there were other people there as well trying to call and , no answer!! 😡
This is an incredible Youngstown gem. Easy to find, plenty of parking & the park is always clean. This place is a must see anytime of year, but I highly recommend fall! The mill is also open certain days for you to see inside of it and shop around for gifts. I love it!
This mill is an amazing place to visit. It is still used to grind flower, and it it worth a special trip just to see. As an added treat, hike from the mill along the East Gorge Trail to the suspension bridge, cross over, and hike back towards the mill. After crossing the covered bridge, you end up back at Lantermans Mill. This two mile loop is one of the very best trails in Ohio. There are rock ledges, boardwalks, waterfalls, and much more.
This place is great, but take that with a grain of salt, as I am 100% biased. This mill was built by my great great great great great grandpa ( or something like that). Basically, I am related to German lanterman. But with that out of the way: man, this place is cool. The guy there who talks has some of the nicest boots I have ever seen. Plus, he is a very cool guy. Whenever we come here, he always talks about something new, and always ha something interesting to say. It is also incredibly cheap, youll probably lose more money on gas than anything. It cost 5 dollars for a group of 4 to walk around the place. There is also very cool store filled with weird stuff I have never seen anywhere else. The re is also a bee hive display on the top floor, which, while kind of out of place, is still pretty cool. I highly recommend this place, probably more than anywhere else I have gone too.
This is a great mill and a great park. I went here and was immensely satisfied neither my experience. I drove up here, parked in the parking lots t, and walked down to the mill. The mill was very historic, being completely made out of wood. After looking at the mill for a while, I walked along a trail which took me to a covered bridge. I walked across the bridge and then walked along a trail along the other side of the river that the bridge crossed. I walked along this trail and it took me to a spot where I was across from the mill on the other side of the river. From here, I could see the mill and it’s large wheel, but I could also see the waterfall in front of the mill. I was particularly surprised that the river flowed on a large rock sticking out in the air before turning into a waterfall. The trail ended at the spot I just described, so I walked back to the covered bridge and the mill. Once I got back to the mill, I walked own another trail past the mill and other the bridge that goes above the park. This trail went past the bridge and along the river valley down to the river. It was a very nice trail, and I really enjoyed it. After I got to the end of the trail by the river, I turned around and went back to my car and drove away from the mill and park, satisfied with my experience. I gave this mill and park five stars because the park is very scenic and has nice hiking trails. The mill is also pretty.
The mill and surrounding gardens and park are quite pretty. We received a partial off-season tour from a very friendly staff member. It was very interesting to hear the history and view the inside structures of the building. We also took a walk on the trails and enjoyed the woods and views of the water and flowers, fences, benches... a peaceful and relaxing day. A few of the best views for pics are from the bridge looking down at the mill and waterfall... along the trails looking through the trees toward the back of the mill... and under the bridge looking through the wrought iron at the ivy covered side and front of the building. There are other parks in the area, too, for walking or picnicking...
When Im in Youngstown and want to take a relaxing walk, this is where I go. No matter the season, this park is beautiful. The trails allow you to see all the angles of the mill and waterfall easily and offer shade and sun both. Parking for the mill is free and very close, so if you want to visit when its working and giving tours, it is a great choice. I hope we continue to preserve this amazing attraction.
Step back in time for a brief moment and see the the water wheel spin. I love the sound of the water and the gears. We purchased some buckwheat in the gift shop. It made the best pancakes! It is a beautiful place with beautiful trails to explore. My family cant wait to go back.
The mill wasnt working when we went, but it is still a cool place to check out. For the money (its super cheap) you get a little guided tour, then are allowed to walk around as you like. Even when the mill isnt running you can see the water wheel turning, which is cool. Kids might get a little bored, but mine were troopers. You can buy milled grain (corn, wheat, buckwheat) that they made in the mill here, too.
Beautiful view and hiking trails. The mill was built in the 1700s and returned to grinding flour and corn meal bask in the 80s. When it was rebuilt, they room care to keep the original style. Historic items on the first floor and upstairs and if you go down 5 flights you can view the water mill working and grinding the flour
Very neat and fascinating place! If youre in the area its definitely some place to check out if youre the least bit interested in history. The cost to get in was only $2 which we were surprised by. The surrounding park and trails were really calming and serene as well!
Lantermans Mill and the gorge are beautiful relics of the past; the former, a grist mill from the 1800s and the latter, a leftover from the glaciation of 30,000 years ago. The East Gorge trail will take you alongside of both for a hike or a stroll, whichever pace and distance you choose, where the sights and sounds of nature abound.
Isaac Powers and Phineas Hill established Lantermans Mill site in 1799. The first gristmill in the Western Reserve was built with round logs. Eli Baldwin replaced the first mill with a larger frame structure in 1823. In 1843, Baldwins mill was destroyed in a flood. Today you can still see a remnant of Baldwins old mill. About 500 feet downstream, there rests one of Baldwins buhrstones.German Lanterman and his brother-in-law Samuel Kimberly built the present mill in 1845 to 1846 with 80 men and 20 teams of horses.Lantermans Mill originally had an overshot waterwheel but was converted to turbines before it ceased operations in 1888. The mill did not function again and fell into a deteriorated condition. In 1982 the Mill Creek Park activated plans to restore the mill and place it back into operation.Today, Lantermans Mill presents one of the most spectacular scenes in Ohio. Located next to a 23 natural waterfall, the mill stands 6 1/2 stories tall. The lower 4 stories are laid with cut sandstone. This massive stone foundation supports the upper 2 1/2-story frame structure. The exterior of the framed portion is covered with naturally weathered lap siding. The numerous windows are 12 over 8 double-hung. The mill was originally built for a 14 waterwheel and that presently powers the mill. The waterwheel is located inside the mill on the lowest level. The water is channeled into the mill via a millrace that has its sluice gates just above the 4 dam that is about 30 yards behind the natural waterfall. The dams construction secures an ample water supply. The water flows through the millrace into the mill, over the waterwheel and exits at the lowest level under the building.Presently the millstones grind whole-wheat flour, cornmeal and buckwheat that are sold at the mills store. Lantermans Mill is open May 1 through October 31, Tuesday through Friday 10-5, and Saturday, Sunday & Holidays 11-6. Tours of the mill are available for a nominal fee.One of the most spectacular scenes in Ohio, the Lantermans Mill is a wonderful experience. There are trails surrounding the mill and a replica covered bridge at the site. (Bresko; Darbee; Lantermans Mill.).

2022-05-09Didnt realize of all the years visiting the area of the mill and the park that the mill was actually a working mill! We stepped inside to check out the inside and found that there is the ability to walk around the inside of the building and get a small glimpse into history. The entry fee is very small, there is a pamphlet that provides you with information and there are several floors you can visit to see the action.

2022-06-12This park has an easy walk down a couple paths along the river. The mill is open during the week, so we missed that on the weekend. You can check out three bridges if you are into that thing. There are several picnic tables and charcoal grills for grilling. We enjoyed the low impact walks along the river regardless of the other features.

2021-07-27If youd like to see a fully functioning mill from 19th Century America, this is the place to go. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and each floor of the mill has exhibits showing its history. You can also see real tools from the mills heyday and learn about the technology of the mill itself. Theres also a walking path outside of the mill that Im sorry I didnt get to explore.

2020-09-28Other than the ugly trees-of-heaven dotting the hillside, this is a really nice scenic area. The mill is closed now for season, but it’s location on the hill by the river is very nice for photographs, as was obvious by the number of people queuing to have their pictures taken there and around the nearby covered bridge. The bridge for the road is currently closed to pedestrians, so you can’t get that view of the mill and waterfall/river but no problem. Now that autumn is here and the foliage will be changing, it’s the perfect time to go out and enjoy the colours and serenity of nature. Cheers.

2020-01-28Great stop for the afternoon or even the holidays. Admission is only $1 if you are from the area and that includes a tour of the mill and access to inside of the building. We have been to the mill several times and the last time we were there we got to witness them turning on the wheel wow we were downstairs. Was an awesome experience.
