Be careful if you have a food allergy. Took me a few pieces to realize they messed up both of my rolls. An hour to get it wrong, then another 45 minutes to get it to go. Now my stomach hurts and Ill be eating cold fried rolls later. (Edit: it was too stale to eat later. Missed half of my event for nothing and down $40)
We used the website to order takeout, got there and were initially ignored. Finally someone came over to ask for our info and friends who ordered after us got their food while we watched what turned out to be our order sit for a good 40 minutes, so sushi was obviously not fresh. Skip this place and just go to some place else.
Good sushi rolls. With that said. They are smaller than most. And if you get any soup or salad it WILL BE TINY. Miso soup is about 4 tablespoons. I guess you have to ask for a double and pay $6?? To get a CUP. Here’s my Togo. Heck I guess this is COVID-19 related. Who knows.
Ordered the dinner box (nigiri is chef’s choice) and the shrimp habachi dinner (which comes with miso soup). The dinner box was ok. Nothing too spectacular. The nigiri was a bit room temp and the chicken seemed a bit overcooked. It filled the stomach. I didn’t get a little sauce dish for soy sauce so I used the little square in the middle that had ginger in it.The shrimp habachi.....was....AMAZING!!! Oh the pan is super burning hot so don’t touch it. We weren’t warned so hubby’s fingers were burnt... It was very flavorful and it a fair amount of different colored veggies to satisfy. It comes with rice but it might not be enough. Will definitely come back for the habachi!!!
No stars would be more appropriate. Sat for 20 minutes before server, who sat us, even came back. Sat for just under 1.5 hours before being told our food was still 15 minutes out.....Appeared well staffed, just no concept of service. Had to leave before any food arrived so cannot speak to food quality.
Went here three times during the Arnold classic. relatively fast service considering how busy the place was. The food was all amazing, My husband got the Kinky roll and I got different types of California rolls, the seaweed salad was a rip off because they layered the bottom with iceberg lettuce and it wasnt that much to start with. Sushi value was decent though. Expect to spend 20-25$ a person on a meal. Overall a good restaurant.
Ive been here multiple times. The food is good, and I love the hot dishes here. Ive never had an issue with the food. The appetizers are great. The sushi is good quality--however, I feel like the price you pay for the sushi is too high compared to the amount of sushi you get (the rolls are so small!).If you want a truly authentic experience and amazing food that is better priced (you get more for what you pay for), I would recommend Akai Hana instead. If you want a quick fix and this is close by, Kooma is fine.
This is a great casual sushi place for rolls, specifically; casual furniture and a youngish crowd. Not a lot of bento box options or a huge selection of entrees, but the rolls were creative and delicious, with very fresh and tasty ingredients. The service was competent, but not as friendly as I experienced at most other places I visited while in Columbus. Prices are mostly reasonable, though there was one too on the menu that cost 30+ dollars. I would definitely go back.
I eat here quite a bit as its near work. The lunchbox is a great portion but generally a few drawbacks... 1, the place smells bad. I know its sushi, but its really bad all the time. 2, quite a few times my chicken teriyaki has been inedible rubber in the lunchbox. It happens enough that its clearly something to do with how theyre keeping it. Still a decent place for lunch..
We ordered sushi rolls, and in the time it took us to actually get them several tables sat after us and were fed. We were ignored by the waitstaff in the interim. Turns out our plates of sushi were sitting out for the half hour we were waiting. Delicious and great drinks, but I bet it would have tasted better if we had gotten them as soon as they were finished.
This place not only failed to inform its customers of seeds with literally all their items on the menu but when I informed them I had Crohn’s disease. Sam, the cook said that he could remake the food but I’d still have to pay for it. Excuse me, but it’s not on your menu. And then after I proceeded to order something else without the seeds. He never discounted my order. Poor way to treat your customers. So a 90 dollar bill all because they don’t accommodate ppl with diseases. My waitress was awesome though, jerrica keep it up!!!
We ate an early dinner at Kooma on a Saturday evening. We ordered several sushi rolls, a couple pieces of nigiri, and a bottle of sake. The food and drink was wonderful. The sushi was incredibly fresh tasting and the rolls had been prepared so that the rice had the perfect amount of stickiness to keep everything together nicely....something thats hard to come by in the Midwest. We noticed that some of the menu items had the same names as the unique items from Mr. Sushi in Dublin. We inquired about this and were informed that the sushi chef from Mr. Sushi is friends with the Kooma sushi chef and they shared techniques and recipes. The restaurant is very small: maybe seats 25 not including the bar which seats another 5 or so. The lighting is dim and the decor is dark, creating an intimate atmosphere. Despite the relatively rowdy group sitting near us, noise was not a problem. I would recommend this restaurant to the hip, urban crowd looking for a relatively private location to share some excellent sushi. The only complaint I have is that upon exiting the restaurant, my wife and I were overwhelmed by the smell of either rotting or old fish. This made our stomachs turn just after thoroughly enjoying our dinner. Im hoping that this was the trash behind the building that was wafting toward the entrance, but regardless of what it was, it needs to be controlled!
This has been the worst service and experience I have had eating anywhere in Columbus. Do yourself a favor and eat somewhere, anywhere else in town.We arrived at the restaurant at 7:10 pm and did not have an order taken until well after 8. We finally received our food at 9:10pm. During this time I received 1 water refill and that was after asking 4 times. One of the members of my party approached the owner about the quality of service. He blamed his waitress, and told us we could accept 30% off or we could leave before we got our food. We had been waiting for almost 2 hours at that point. Some of the sushi may have been okay (mine wasnt) but when it sits out for 20 minutes, and is delivered at near room temperature, its really not edible. Smallest Spider Roll Ive ever had, very poor presentation. The service and quality of food combined were beyond unacceptable. The bathroom was disgusting and filthy, smelled like it had not been cleaned in weeks or more. The owner was rude and had no concern for making our experience right at all. If I could give this place negative stars, I would.
In town for a cheer comp with my wife and girls. I wasnt sure about the wait after reading the past reviews, but my girls really wanted sushi. Turned out to be a great experience with none of the trouble the low-rating reviewers had. Ashley was an awesome server and super gracious with my little girls. Thank you and we will be back.
Had a pleasant birthday lunch there with some coworkers. We ordered a variety of sushi, lunchboxes and bibimbap. The miso soup was nice and hot and the meals came with all the usual accoutrements. The staff were quick, attentful and service was good. The decor is a little dark and moody but the food and staff are quite the opposite. Would recommend this place and will be going back to sample other dishes in future.
I was not impressed with this places sushi. Most of the rolls have a california roll base, which is fine if youre not looking for, well, variety. For their prices, I expected a lot more diversity like tuna, salmon, yellowtail..anything other than California rolls over and over again with slightly different toppings. That being said, their cooked food is fantastic. I would definitely come here again, but it would not be for the sushi.
I was very happy with my experience. It is a little more pricey compared to a lot of other locations. But the price is noticeable as soon as you taste the food. It all appears to be of a higher fresher quality. I would absolutely go back. The server was great. I just wish the speed of service had been a tad quicker. But as a whole I will return.
My favorite Sushi place in Columbus. I have been here many times. The portion of the Sushi is perfect. Not too big and unmanageable, like other sushi places where you cant fit the sushi in your mouth, or it falls apart.Typical selection of fish.Other menu items are fairly delicious too, but many Japanese cuisine items, such as curry or Katsu dishes arent available. There are some Korean options, though.
Picking up my daughter @ OSU, she recommended this place as good quality sushi, no frills, better value than most downtown spots - she was right. Variety of good cocktails (ginger martin a wiinner, as was the licheeteeni). Stonepot bibimbap tasty, plenty for two to share. Lots of good choices in rolls (eel caterpillar roll tasty). Hard to get good sushi for two with drinks for $60 or less, but this was a good choice.
Came in on a Wednesday night and they were looking a little busy. Sign at the front said “Please wait to be seated”, so we did. Two girls were working the floor and there were two spots open at the sushi bar. Nobody acknowledged us. Not a server, not a sushi chef. We waited for over 5 min, watched the servers walk past many times and nobody said a thing. If they just said, “hi, we’re busy, we’ll be right with you”, we would have been fine. Instead we left disgruntled, probably never to return.
The fish is very good, and artfully sliced. Personally, Im not a fan of the rice used in the nigiri and maki. It is denser and drier than I like. The miso is very good. For the price, I was disappointed that no salad came with the sushi/sashimi combo. I would definitely go back.
The best sushi I have ever had. Even the leftover Cali rolls were good the next night. Split the seafood platter with a friend, tons of yummy scallops, shrimp, and two lobster tails- Amazing! ! The server made us feel right at home and made some wonderful suggestions.
Slow service -- though to be fair they warned us they were running behind-- sticky tables, small place with 3 wait staff yet its hard to get their attention, sushi is bland and special rolls where meh, edamame was under cooked. On top of which this place is fairly expensive, with most special rolls in the $14+ range.
To whom it may concern,I am writing to you to share my experience at your restaurant, Kooma in West Chester, with hopes that this experience doesnt happen to any other customer. I will start by saying I am a huge fan of Kooma and come about 3-5 times a month. On this particular evening, Tuesday (5/2/17) our experience was a complete disappointment. When we were seated, we ordered 4 glasses of wine and some waters. It took about 26 minutes for our wine to reach the table. My colleagues drink took so long she asked if she could get a red wine instead of the white, but the server said she couldnt switch because the drinks were being made. That was the first issue, but we said it wasnt a big deal and she drank the white. As a waitress myself, if a customer ever requested a drink change, we would immediately accommodate to what they want, after all, they are paying for their wine and their experience. Then, we ordered calamari that took over 35 minutes to come out, but we assumed the server forgot to put it in or perhaps it was his first night serving, because it was a slow Tuesday evening. Which then meant that my sweet potato roll and shrimp tempura roll were both cold and hard when they came out. Then, our sushi came out on a huge platter, instead of our own plates. We all ordered separately and never said we wanted it on one plate. A different server came over and took the platter back and separated our individual orders so we could all finally eat. Then, a colleague of mine found a long hair entangled in her sushi. We notified our server and he took the sushi to the manager who then, instead of going to the back kitchen to examine the hair, he slowly pulls it out in front of everyone eating, and other tables where all looking with a face of disgust, as they are trying to enjoy their own sushi from that same kitchen. The manager then comes to our table and puts the hair close to her face and says, Im sorry you found a hair in your food, but its blonde and you have blonde hair. Who says that? First of all, its was not hers because it was entangled in the sushi. Then he brings her out a new roll, but only one roll... she had ordered two. Finally, after all of this my friends husband asked for a box to put his leftover chicken teriyaki and he finds a curly long black hair in the leftovers, after he ate the entire meal with it in there. At this point I was waiting for the hidden cameras to come out and us to be told we were on a prank TV show. We call the manager over AGAIN and show him. He then takes it back for about 5 minutes then returns to table to say that the hair was actually part of the food they use to bake, but looks a lot like hair. or some complete bogus reason. Sir it was hair, we all held our camera flashlights up to it, it was a long curly black hair.I am hoping no one else has an experience like this, because it was a complete waste of $128. The way the manager handled it could have completely changed our experience. Even if the hair was the same color as the customers hair, you do not say that.Thank you for your time and I hope this issue can be addressed so it doesnt happen again. I would like to redo our visit with a better experience.Jordan Baxter610-476-0364
Visiting Columbus for the weekend. Found this gem hidden next to a parking garage. Ordered hibachi and a sweet and spicy chicken with edemame and tempura. All very good, though a little on the expensive side. The actual space inside the restaurant is small so probably not good for large groups.
New to Columbus and looking for a good traditional sushi restaurant. Kooma Sushi was okay but not great. Despite the signage that Vine St garage parking will be validated, I was told it wasnt available because the garage didnt provide them with enough validation tickets. Not a big deal but the final nudge that made me think, nah, no reason to come back here.
Terrible...the service was slow, my order was incorrect, and the california roll tasted fishy. After passing this information along to the server, nothing was offered or deducted from my bill. I didnt even eat my dinner it was so awful. There are great places to eat sushi in Columbus, but this is one I definitely wouldnt recommend.
Like a little Short North secret, even after who-knows how long its been there. Although Kooma has a small dining room with a sometimes overloaded sushi chef, its got great food (that includes sushi and non-sushi offerings) and good service. The frequent DJ and the nice little bar are nice, too.PARKING TIP: Kooma validates - if you print a ticket and tell the garage attendant (next door deck) youre going to the restaurant hell let you in. Its not free, but much less than the event price thats usually in effect.

2022-03-15The sushi was very good, the fish quality is very good. Service was very bad though and is the one thing I hope they improve. Otherwise I would definitely come back again.I would recommend trying it out if u are in the mood for good sushi

2022-06-05The best Miso soup weve had outside of California. The sushi was flavorful and the right bit size pieces. We asked for gluten free and they were able to meet our needs.Bottle of wines are reasonably priced.

2021-12-30First and only time I will eat here. I REALLY wanted to like this place, its been on my list of places to try for a while. To begin with it is quite overpriced for the portion sizes (see photo of the piece of salmon compared to my thumb, not even close in size and my hands are pretty small). The 2 pieces of Nigiri I got here equal the size of one piece from other sushi restaurants in Columbus and what I got here cost 2x as much. If you get the Nigiri be aware that they put Wasabi between the fish and the rice to hold it together (which was not mentioned on the menu or when ordering) so that completely ruined the taste for me. The roll I got said deep fried but only the fish in the roll was deep fried, that was not clear. Anywhere else I have gotten this roll, the whole roll has always been deep fried. And every question we asked the girl taking the order had no idea what the answer was (she was nice), so even trying to verify descriptions ect was difficult. Tobiko was ok, the quality of Salmon seemed ok but hard to tell bc of Wasabi, redsnapper in the roll was quite chewy. Last but not least only parking available is at a meter or a paid lot in front of North Market. So you are also going to pay for parking on top of the increased price of the food here.

2022-07-17Sushi was good but nothing that blew me away. idprobably eat here again but i wouldn’t go out of my way to choose this place again. i got the kooma roll + tuna nigiri and it was average. the miso soup alone is what made this a 4/5 rating (full star for the miso soup). service was quick and the staff was nice when picking up my to-go order.

She never asked me anything and for a hour she was literally on her phone speak aggressively. Really just bad service but great food! Also my drinks were make incorrectly.

2022-03-04Great sushi, but I felt under services. It was probably because it was kind of busy, but I had to ask for water after getting my food. Would go back still.

2022-06-18This was the second time weve eaten at Kooma. It surprises me that such a good little sushi shop is hiding there beside a parking garage. Fresh ingredients, expertly prepared, and presented. So good. We even had someone with us that had never tried sushi and he enjoyed most of the rolls

2022-06-27Sushi’s always good- FYI they stopped doing Monday half off rolls apparently 6 weeks ago for take out or dine in even though their website says they still do it & “after July 30 half off will no longer me take out and dine in only”
