One of my favorite places to shop.About two years ago my wife and I reevaluated where we spend our money, and decided to do a few things. First cut out Amazon. Second kill off Walmart, Third buy local whenever possible.I now shop exclusively at Joughin Hardware unless they dont have what I need when I need it - this is rarely the case. I also find that their prices are not much more than Lowes or Home Depot and are often lower. Customer service is way better as the people working here actually know something about the products they sell and what the products are used for.
Thus place is so cool! Old school, 100+ years old, hardware store with modern equipment. Basement area shows what real construction is. Upstairs there is a small museum that houses a variety of items from the old days. Several cool antiques and vintage items to see. Support local, small businessea.
I was pleasantly surprised to find an old family hardware store in Painesville,Ohio just sixty miles north of my home in Canton, Ohio. Since they have probably been selling Stanley tools and hardware products to local carpenters and tradesmen since the 1880’s, I was happy to find antique Stanley tool dealer, Mike Jenkins, offerings prominently displayed in mid-store‼️And I purchased a No.4 1/2 smooth plane from circa 1905! If you want a unique shopping experience totally opposite the big boxes please visit Joughin Hardware.
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff! They had exactly the hardware that I was looking for. Every time I go it has never been disappointing. So much better service than from the big box stores. With the loss of Ace Hardware, its nice to know that Joughins is still in business. Please support our local hardware stores as much as we can!
Our rear storm door on our back door inside latch broke allowing the door to be pushed open without activating it. Our dogs were getting wise to this causing us to fear they would plan their escape. I took the door mechanism apart and found a broken spring. Shopping online I found a replacement door set that would possibly work at $25+. We decided to go to Joughin’s as they have “everything.” We took the broken storm door set along with us. We were greeted in the store by young sales employee. I explained the issue, he then led us to the storm door replacement parts area in the basement. They didn’t have a direct replacement kit that would work on our particular setup. The salesman then took a look at OUR broken setup and said to follow him. He went to a work table and started to tinker with the broken one. He removed the broken spring examining it, walked to a display to grab a small plastic bag containing 3 small springs the same size diameter. He cut one down slightly and using his pocket knife replaced the broken one......FIXED!!! It might last 3 days or the next 30 years, who knows? But.... Cost.... $3.00 for the pack of springs. he took the time to examine the issue.. and extended CUSTOMER SERVICE...... OUTSTANDING!!! We can’t say enough good about this store!! Old time sales and service. We have been there many times and will always return.
Such a cool place to visit! Took the kids, and was given popcorn while we explored. Husband found the hardware he needed, and we had a blast checking out all four floors. The place is not only interesting and has historical coolness, but they seem to have everything. Employees were kind and helpful, and readily available to help us find things. Great experience all around!
This is my favorite hardware store in all of northeast Ohio! It is a throwback to the old time hardware store, tin ceilings and all. Very complete and well organized inventory, and perhaps more importantly a very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Not many of these left.
Not like hardware stores used to be. Better! If you appreciate a good hardware store, you gotta experience this place. Big store, old time feel with creaky wooden floors, packed to the rafters yet well organized. They have stuff no one else carries anymore, plus stuff no one ever did. I learn something ever time Im there. Great prices, too. Bonus - a room full of Carharts, some in styles and sizes hard to find even on line.
If you are satisfied with inexperienced customer service reps, desire to save pennies on your next project, or want to support the epitome of big business...then go to Lowes or Home Depot. If you prefer to get the right item/ part on the first trip, then visit this store. The staff is great! The selection of hardware for older construction is second to none in the area. Support local business and if you have children...take them here so that they understand what a hardware store is supposed to be.
This is the greatest hardware store ever! They have nearly everything I have every needed, and what they didnt have they ordered. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly.Joughins is always my first stop when Im doing a project. Usually it takes me 2 or 3 trips to get the things I didnt know I needed, but they have it, whatever it is.
A little slice of man-heaven if you think drop-forged tools and Carhart is cool. The best area hardware store, and its not even close. Crazy-wide selection and knowledge staff set this place apart. They try to carry items for every budget, but they seem to focus on items that arent meant to be used once and discarded. This isnt Home Depot or Amazon, but a locally owned place thats been around for generations. If the cheapest solution is your goal you may be happier elsewhere.
Awesome hardware store. Husband misplaced a hinge for one of our doors, no other place carried them that we went to. Thankfully they had them! Also we couldnt match the stain they had through out our house, but Ken did. I was told by others that he could when others cant! That was true. Everyone there were very helpful and prices were great.
Ive waited my entire life to live in a place that has a hardware store like this. It looks like norman rockwell painting inside. The staff are friendly, helpful, and incredibly confident. I dont know how they manage to cram so much selection in such a small space, but this place has become my absolute one stop shop for pretty much everything except lumber and live plants.
In my mind, if theres a heaven, its this store. All kinds of man toys, people who are helpful without being jerks about it. Only con is prices on some things are a bit out of whack. Otherwise, literally, my favorite store on the planet Earth.Of course, in my heaven, the cash register doesnt work so everything is free!
If you need screens made, go elsewhere. Needed five screens made, gave precise measurements. Waited nearly two months for them. The first three - the small one I had to hammer in with a mallet, but otherwise fine. The next two, not so much. Slightly too tall, but again was able to mallet them in. An entire inch at least on the width too shy, and out of frustration I simply sealed the cracks with insulation. The next two Im told are finally finished. I get there, and theres four. Two of which are ones I already picked up previously but they made again for whatever reason I cant comprehend. Sure enough the two I needed were shy on the width, and this was worse because I had given them a sample on those two, which was supposed to be just a rescreen but they screwed up the original frame so they just made two new ones instead of one and a rescreen. And still somehow sized them wrong. Not to mention the confusion of pricing because the invoice had two additional screens on it I didnt need and I still cant make heads or tails of my receipt to know if I was charged right or not for just the two and frankly dont even care right now because I managed to make those work too. I probably could have built them myself with no knowledge faster. But at least (half) of the people I dealt with in this place were friendly.

2022-04-05Only reason Ill keep coming back is because of the newest cashier there, not only is damn beautiful, she bull s** with you like your family and not skip a beat. Very warm and kind, inviting atmosphere she brings. The world needs more people like her. Around. Other staff is cool, but two completely different ball parks. Ill keep buying my material here as long as I see fit. 😁😉

2022-05-26Had to stop in there for some screws for a project as referred from a friend of mine. Place was amazing for never being there I was dumbfounded with how you just step back in time. Highly recommend it to anybody I was only there for a brief period and due to needing to get back to a project I rushed out of there, had I not pushed myself I may have spent an entire day there. The employees are all very friendly and its almost like a family atmosphere with the old timers cracking jokes, the cashier cracking them right back, and the guy that helped me find what I was looking for. I will definitely be back and give you guys five stars! Thanks for taking me back in time...

2022-03-02I dont know what Painesville would do without this place. Its way bigger than how it looks from State Street. Huge selections of everything hardware in one of Painesvilles last few intact operating 19th Century buildings. Customer service is quick, attentive and thorough. I love this place.

2022-01-06I used to shop here, except if you buy Christmas gifts you have to return them yourself not the person you buy it for. Stuck in the old age. Had to have the card I paid for it with. Forcing me if not had it to get in store credit. Asked about the policy nothing on receipt and nothing on writing stating this. Won’t be back.
