Outdoor patio on a cool crisp Cleveland Summer evening combined with outstanding service from Kelly and staff.Pasta rigatoni was perfectal dente , crusted breaded veal, rib eye and lobster tail followed a wonderful house salad. But, the appetizer of duck, with ademi glaz over dried cherries ,with walnuts was equal to the smoked trout entree. Pleased to recommend to everyone for any occasion.
Lives up to fine dining expectation. Service exceptional! Example: before even entering the restaurant, wife is trying to turn left onto the side street, and theres a bit of a traffic jam; not sure were going to be able to turn- when out walks the valet and *stops oncoming traffic* so we can turn. Waitress very knowledgeable. Good cocktails, delicious food.
We used open table for early reservations arrived on time and we’re seated immediately by the window the host and hostess both greeted us with a smile we just sat down to order our food I will edit the review in a little bit to let you know how the food was so far our servers and hostesses are fantastic
Had a wonderful first experience at Jonny’s Bar on Fulton. Immediately upon entering you see the Art Deco history of the bar. The restaurant proudly displays its history through vintage fixtures and artwork. We were escorted to a table in the side room by friendly staff - service overall was attentive and perfectly timed such that we didn’t feel rushed. The menu was extensive as well - we had the stuffed calamari for an appetizer (delicious and unique!) and the grouper and beef tenderloin wrapped in puff pastry with lobster for entrees. We were pleasantly surprised to find all entrees came with a salad, potatoes and green beans, as well as warm bread for the table. Portions were large and perfectly prepared. While we didn’t have room for dessert, we saw some very impressive (large) pieces of cake being served. (Next time!). Overall, we had a lovely experience and will be back!
My husband and I were blown away. The food was spectacular, we shared the smoked trout appetizer, I had the rib eye special and my husband had a cold smoke filet. Everything was cooked perfectly. But the most amazing part was the patio. It is so beautiful, spacious and comfortable. The live music was such a nice touch. We enjoyed everything. We are so happy that we chose Johnny’s to celebrate our 20 year wedding anniversary.
Small portions, below average service, high prices.Menu was greatly reduced in comparison to website and more expensive. Stuffed pepper appetizer was average in taste and luke warm at best. Salad contained no toppings at all. Just lettuce and salad dressing. Pasta Putanaise main entree was over cooked. Pasta was mushy and caked together with the cayenne cream sauce. Entire dish picked up with the fork. When my wife voiced her displeasure, she was offered a side of linguini. She accepted thinking it would at least come with the same sauce minus the shrimp. No, they brought out a plate of PLAIN linguini. Cmon, my grandaughters ramen noodles are more complex. Hard to believe this place has survived one year let alone 100. You guys dropped the ball. Covid or no Covid. Place was not busy and should have been able to serve a satisfactory dinner. Unfortunately, a poor experience on my birthday.
Wonderful garden, good food, friendly waiter but for The love of god some of the slowest service for a table of two I have experienced in the city. Over two hours to get food which caused us to not be able to use our $40 Asian lights festival tickets at the zoo. This may sound dramatic given the ambiance and food is good but in the moment this kind of delay truly does ruin ones night....
Went to Johnny’s for our 38th anniversary celebration. Requested patio, and it was lovely. However, the dining experience was totally disappointing. The restaurant was obviously understaffed and everyone on the patio was waiting and complaining. The waiter didn’t handle it well. He just said he was doing the best he could but it was so busy he couldn’t get drinks at the bar, etc. Dinner for 2 took 3 hours. No apology from staff . Very disappointing. Maybe an off night but I wouldn’t rush back. After posting this, the owner called me the next day to apologize. She wanted me to give them another try and sent us a generous gift certificate. Now that’s excellent customer service. Looking forward to going again.
Wow. Since the first time I walked through the door here I knew I was home. From the dark wood to the welcoming host/owner Bo, this place has got it all. The wine list is impressive and reasonably priced. The food is out of this world. I had the grilled long bone veal chop and I have had many dreams about it since. The bartender really knows what hes doing as my old fashioned was the best I have ever had. Service was impeccable and impressive. The appetizers and pasta course were served French style with ease and elegance which is a very nice old school touch. I could go on but let me just say that this is somewhere you have got to try at least once, you will not be disappointed.
Visited Johnnys for our anniversary. Seated outside in the nice outside patio by the owner who was very personable. We ordered the salmon special and the charred filet -- outstanding! The wait staff was attentive even though the place was busy. Pace of service was good. The side portions were rather small but excellent. Do not pass up the tiramisu- very light and a great ending to a memorable night out!
We were sorely disappointed in our Johnnys 46 Anniversary Night out. We made a reservation for the patio. When we arrived they had a table in the restaurant. Apparently the person taking our reservation made an error and did not indicate that we wanted the patio even though he carried on a conversation with me about the patio having an awning over it and heaters. Anyways, we felt that it would at least have been in the best interest of customer service to offer us a dessert or comp one round of drinks in respect and honor of our Anniversary and in lieu of the error by the employee and especially since we ended up sitting inside the restaurant so they did not lose our business. After all we are not strangers to Johnnys on Fulton. What a total disappointment!!!
Perfection.Romantic date? First date? Special occasion? Trying to make an impression? Yeah, you came here. Or you did it wrong. Many thanks to Johnnys for making OUR night special!Great food, great table service, even better experience directed from the top down!Cant wait to go back!
Loved it! Food was good, ambiance fantastic and extensive wine menu. What a hidden gem. Be sure to make reservations for the lovely balcony, the space is beautiful and easy to see why a reservation is needed, looks like an Italian garden. The pasta is hand made daily. I could go on and on. See for yourself, where you are its only a stones throw away.
Food and service were great however it took us over 2.5 hours to get our food, from start to finish we were here almost 3.5hrs. We had a reservation and did not get seated for 40 min. The waitress did her best to appologize stating there was a large party slowing down the kitchen (kitchen capacity should be factored in when taking reservations). We were never offered anything to compensate for the inconvience, at these prices I do expect that courtesy.
The place was amazing the food superb. The waitress was well versed with the menu. Great service. We dinned on the patio it was very relaxing and felt like a throw back of Italy. A must experience restaurant if your looking for something different. Pricing is upper scale but it is worth it the food was cooked to perfection. Very unique menu.
Went there for the first time last night (10/25/13). The prices were extremely high, so we ordered the spaghetti and meatballs, the cheapest thing on the menu. The service was A plus, the food about a B minus. The place is clean, neat, and comfortable. However, the prices are way out of line for the food, at least in our experience/opinion. They had a very good pianist playing there, which helped to make up for the average quality of the food, and saved the evening from being somewhat of a disappointment.
Valet guy was as rude as could be. Despite a pleasant experience he was adamant and persistent to the point of being rude. The friend I arrived with was pestered for his keys (after finding our own parking spot and parking our own car!) And after meeting my wife in the parking lot (after she parked) he again did the same, then spouted off with we work for tips, ya know. After getting her inside, I went outside to speak with him. He was apologetic, but gave some cockamamie excuse for his comment. To save face for a friend who frequents the place I gave him a $20 bill and explained that we didnt feel the need to pay for parking our own car, and that had we wanted valet service, we would have pulled up front. Being shaken down before you get in the door is not what I want for my next night out. I regret giving the dude any money at all.
New Years Eve. Food wasSuperb for the filet dinners. The Seafood pasta tasted great but noodles were gummy and stuck together in a glob. The duck tasted good but was so tuff you could not cut it, my husband tried cutting for me and gave up. Food is usually very good here but not on New Years Eve. Prices were way too high for the quality. I’m sure having only two seatings and everyone coming at the same time just overwhelmed the kitchen which affected the food quality and the service. Disappointing.
We had my Mothers 75th Birthday Dinner Party here 2 weeks ago on a Saturday. And we loved it !25 people attended; the venue was great, the food was great ( the Filet Mignon is to die for ), the service was great and the owner was on site orchestrating everything. The entrees for the 25 guests arrived all at once, so we could all dine together, which was impressive, since they were all separate entrees and not served family style. In addition, we never had to ask for anything, the wait staff was incredible, always asking if we needed drinks/cocktails/other and was always attentive to our needs. It was nice to dine at Johnnys for an upscale dinner/cocktails in a cool neighborhood restaurant/bar and not only have a great dinner/time, but also have a worry free night to enjoy my Mothers 75th Birthday celebration. All the guests were very happy! and there is Valet Parking too, very nice! Thank you to everyone at Johnnys Bar on Fulton! Well be back very soon for dinner and drinks!
My wife and I live in Cincinnati. We travel frequently and always enjoy our dining experiences. Without a doubt Johnnys is our favorite restaurant. The food and service are exceptional. Add an unbelievable atmosphere and you have a real winner. We drove 250 miles primarily to have dinner at Johhnys. Try this great restaurant. You wont be disappointed.
Johnnys is one of Clevelands best kept secrets when it comes to fine dining and superb drinks. When the weather is warm, you must dine in the back patio. Their veal is probably my favorite, but their spaghetti and meatballs as well as the Prime rib are amazing! Make sure you go on the weekend to get a drink recommendation or creation from Bobby, arguably one of (if not) the best bartenders in Cleveland.
Update: (Despite owners statement that they would call to make things right, it has been more that a month and I have not heard a word from them. Sadly, this seems to further my conclusion that the management and staff want to continue with business as usual and are genuinely unconcerned about either their patrons or quality.)I dined here with a guest for a late Saturday night dinner after reading rave reviews online, from Zagat, and strong recommendations from some locals, who urged me to dine at the original Johnny’s Bar. It has been around since 1942 and is a real institution of Cleveland. However, the experience left much to be desired. In the small and bustling dining room, the host pointed out a few open tables and invited us to seat ourselves wherever we liked, and for some reason, later seemed annoyed that we had chosen the table that we did. We sat for quite a while before we received any water, bread, dinner/drink menus, or any acknowledgement at all from the waiter who was busy chatting up the table next to us and walking around to the other tables who mostly had already been served their main dishes. When the waiter finally did come to greet us, he was very curt and annoyed to explain beer and drink options that were not listed anywhere on the wine or dinner menu. The escargot with angel hair pasta appetizer was overcooked and barely edible. My guest ordered Potato Gnocchi with Sautéed Shrimp, Broccoli and Cream which tasted, and I am not exaggerating when I say this, like it was a frozen meal from Bertolli that you would buy at a grocery store, though to be clear, I am not suggesting that it was. Suffice to say that dining experience was outrageously overpriced for the quality and I could not bear to dine their again, or to recommend that others do.Perhaps at one point, this establishment was truly an anchor of the Cleveland dining experience with its charm and old school Italian feel, though it seems clear that under the current management, those days are past.
We often celebrate our birthdays at Johnnys. Our dinners of filet of Beef au Poivre, veal with pappardelle pasta, and linguine with clam sauce and scampi, were perfect as were the banana stuffed peppers, wine and cocktails, and excellent service. We plan to be back again next month to celebrate our sons birthday. We will be back again and again. This place has good food and nice people!
Very disappointed! I made a reservation for dinner on the patio for 4 on saturday nite for an anniversary. When the girl took the reservation I told her that if we couldnt get the patio we would go elsewhere. She said no problem. When we arrived they said we had a reservation but not on the patio. The hostess checked and said the patio was full and offered no solution. She seemed like she didnt care. She didnt even get the manager to see if there was anything that could be done. We have been to Johnnies many times , but I dont think that I can make a reservation or even recommend this establishment to anyone again after this. I think that they need to screen their employees better.
We went to Johhnys on an early balmy winter weeknight - and had a heavenly meal - From the service to the eclectic music on the sound system (different every night) to the romantic vibe and scrumptious food and wine, it was a perfect evening. You cant go wrong at Johnnys which is why its a classic go to in Little Italy. Try the veal - could be the best you ever have!
Johnnies was at one time the number one restaurant in Cleveland ( west side / east side) however I was recently there for a important celebration and noticed on many levels the service , food and seating had become less than five stars. I have been going to Johnnies for over 30 years and was deeply saddened. The glory days are gone.
Johnnys on Fulton is a Cleveland classic. I went here again recently with my parents after nearly 20 years and it took us all back, in a good way. So while this is an old Italian place, they really specialize in fine dining but without pretense - when I was there with my parents on a recent Friday night over 20 years after our last visit, the clientele was diverse with lots of suits, but also a guy in jeans and a camoflage t-shirt on a date with his wife. The food is very good and while the wine list offers lots of high-end bottles, you can also find unusual selections in a more modest range (particularly from Italian producers). Would love to go again!
Went to Johnny s with a group of 8 for a 50th Birthday celebration. Told our waitress it would be seperate check as we sat down. (Very pricy, martinis were 15.00 a piece. ) food was good, our water glasses were never refreshed. When our waitress brought our bill she gave it to us and said we would have to figure it out ! Are you kidding? She then said I assumed you would all be splitting the bill between you, and this was said with major attitude! As we were trying to figure out the bill, things werent adding up right, turns out that after being told that the salads were included with dinner, they werent , there was an extra 15.00 charge for a very small salad added on to the dinner. After figuring the bill out she came back took the bill and said im sorry, I forgot to add something...when she came back the total was significantly higher...she had forgot to add her tip! If I would have had a choice, I would not have given her a tip. I dont want to deal with attitude from a waitress no matter how good the food! Will not return, too many other great places!
The people who give this restaurant have to work at the place. WAY overpriced, waiter looked like he just got done smoking meth. Dont believe the hype, the food average at best. I eat out at least 3 times a week and have had better meals at Perkins for a 10th of the cost.
The most overrated restaurant, johnnys bar is living (i hope) on its reputation or an aged clientele. johnnys bar features a menu and waitstaff that appear not to have changed since the time steel ruled in cleveland. while the appetizers were very good, the entrees were saturated in butter, making them too rich (and, surprisingly, untasty) for consumption. although johnnys bar is not situated in the most attractive part of town, the wood-paneled interior is very inviting and the waitstaff is extremely professional. even ignoring price, there are many better places to eat in cleveland.
We were greeted very politely when we arrived however our waiter was very arrogant he took food without asking if we were done we pay for our food and no one has the right to touch it or take it when not finished I had a margarita in a glass the size of the water glass was and it was $15 thats crazy its cramped its not all that its made out to be very pricey.

2022-05-23This is five stars for me. From the time I pulled up to the valet to getting back into my car, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. As soon as I pulled up I was greeted with a friendly welcome and asked to just leave the keys in my car. I checked in for the reservations and was greeted with a smile. My table was not yet ready so they said please have a seat at the bar and have a drink while the rest of your party arrives. It was just a warm friendly welcome. This location is small and intimate, the entire staff was friendly and accommodating in every way. They even changed the channel so I could watch the playoffs. The food blew me away. I tried duck and it was almost like juicy steak. I tried calamari unlike any I have ever had in the most delicious marinara sauce I could ever remember having. I had the Ribeye which was the special and it was one of the best. It was perfectly cooked, so very flavorful and the sauce I could not getenough. I was using bread to soak it up and eat it. After all this great food and service I was given a friendly farewell on my way out to find my car already pulled up to the door. This was top tier dining and service. I highly recommend this gem.

2022-05-20This place is always great. It feels like stepping back in time. Everything is classy. The food is delicious. I had the peppercorn crusted duck breast, served with walnuts, sundried cherries, goat cheese, and a frangelico based sauce. For the main, I went with classic veal parmesan. You cannot go wrong with that.If youve never been here before, try a veal dish.

2022-03-20Its true, you get what you pay for!Johnnys on Fulton is probably the most expensive Italian restaurant I have ever seen, but the food is among the very best I have ever tasted! Add the delightful dining room, where murals creep over onto the heavy wooden walls, and you could be in New York or Rome. A memorable experience unless you are trying to dine on a budget.

2021-11-10A Cleveland classic. BUT! We were stuck in a booth across from bar, thankfully all the butts that kept bumping into me were behind me. It was crowded! It got Loud! The food, my wife liked her gnocchi, our friends wife had a veal special which she liked a lot. Her husband had the same thing I did the Italian seafood feast, wonderful seafood in a large quantity and very good, the sauce, I was not impressed by, very bland. I guess I should have tried one of the many veal dishes. I think or seating was unfortunate. I will not hurry back.

2019-12-17Food was delicious. The service as great. I cant give five stars because the drinks were not good. Ordered an old fashioned and they put seltzer in it. Yuck! That is not the way its served commonly. I wish they would have asked. I couldnt even drink it.
