Great wines, and a great wine bar. Unique mixed drinks featuring wine and mixers. Samples are available on all the wine so you dont have to buy a whole glass of something youve never heard of, let alone a whole bottle. Im more of a sweet wine person and they hit the spot perfectly and i always end up taking some home to. The parking lot is small and gravel but it never seems to be full.
Loved my first visit to John Christ. The atmosphere was lovely and it was a great place to relax with a bottle of wine and great company. Although it was snowing when I went, the outdoor section and patio looked lovely and I will definitely return this summer so I can enjoy it!
My husband and I love to visit wineries. We always spend copius amounts of money at good wineries with good service. We visited this winery this past Tuesday, their sign, website and facebook page said they were open until 6pm. We arrived about 5:15 pm, thinking surely we could have a few samples and buy some wine. Upon entering, we both used the restroom. My husband indicated that the mens restroom was void of ANY toilet paper or paper towels. I encountered a staff member, only to be greeted in a gruff manner. When I asked if we could sample some wine, his reply was I dont have time. I am the only one here and I have to get to a staff meeting. I literally looked at him with bewilderment and said well- I guess well go to a grocery store to purchase some wine then! To which he changed his tune to make a sale. Dont advertise you are open till 6pm if you want to close early. This is a retail business- you signed up for this. If you advertise you are open until 6pm, plan accordingly. You lost a couple of winos. We stayed at a local Airbnb and let them know about our experience and not to recommend this place. Were just an hour away and would have come back if we were treated better. Customer Service should always be your number one focus, you have one chance to make a good first impression- and this was a complete FAIL. I would recommend going to the Wine Vault in Vermillion at 5581 Liberty Ave. This place has a great atmosphere- superior service and the most amazing food plates. Then theres the Paper Moon Winery in Vermillion- they also have food and a great outdoor area and are pet friendly. PLUS Paper Moon has Hard cider- 2009 State Road. We had a a 5 star experience at both places, friendly staff, amazing wines and food. The other nearby winery to this one was Klingshirn at 33030 Webber Road, Avon Lake, OH.We recommend going there instead- staff is sooo friendly and good wines.
I was a visitor to Ohio. My friend brought me to the winery for a wine tasting. The host and gentleman at the bar made us feel unwelcome, the hostess keep telling us how busy they were as is she did not want us to stay. This a very unfriendly winery. Oh and they ran out of food.
When my wife and I were dating, John Christ Winery was our date spot. Everybody there was a friend, or became one. Alex and Zora Christ were wonderful hosts, who served some of the best wines the state had to offer, and comfort foods to match. We were like family. In fact, we held our rehearsal dinner at the winery.Times change. Alex and Zora retired. The winery was sold. Attitudes changed as well. On my first visit under new management...I asked a question about a wine, and was rudely answered with, You wouldnt understand. That is a bad answer, since I had worked in the wine industry for years. The manager failed to ascertain my background. I am no expert, but that was rude to say, even to a novice. Later, I met the managers parents at the winery. They were equally rude.Sadly, the wines lost their wonderful nuances that Alex Christ formed. The friendly atmosphere is gone. Yes, the place is thriving with the folks who have moved into the Buddy Kopf developments in the area. Good for Buddy Kopf. You are a wonderful businessman. Unfortunately, the good wine is now average. The friendly atmosphere is now just another business...albeit local, that is good!I do not expect Alex and Zora. They were special to us. That is past. It is just a shame the wines lost their character, and the staff lost their sense of MANNERS.
New management is rude and very dismissive of customers concerns. Ordered a fruit roll up which has been a favorite signature drink for the past 7 years that I have come for. First off the bartender begins to make the pitcher anddoesnt bother to inform me as to the new substitute that is being used for the energy drink mix. When I asked to speak to a manager he just comes over and say oh well just pour it out and walks away. The bartender quite unsure on how to respond to my questions that I still had as the manager walked away so I asked to speak to him again. Once again very rude as if Im a paying customer is bother to him. I understand that management changes all the time and like I said before I have been coming here for 7 years and this management staff is by far the worst. I will not be returning I will by my wine somewhere else.
Ive been going to this Winery for over 30 years, wemt for my cousins wedding shower yesterday, had the most delicious peach wine and many others... if anyone ever gets a chance go out there for glass of wine they even have games that you can sit down and play and food well recommended

2021-10-31We tried peach, raspberry, blackberry & special blend. Very generous samples, $1 each. The bottle of blackberry was only $8.49. The wines were all pretty good, all very sweet! The peach one just left a bad aftertaste in my mouth.

2018-09-23Nice laid-back atmosphere with a lovely back patio area. Much broader variety of wines than I expected from an Ohio winery, and I liked every one I tasted! Tried my first clam bake here and it was sooo good.

2021-02-13John Christ is a very enjoyable neighborhood winery! Meet your friends there with some board games or cards, some cheese and crackers or snacks. Then buy a few bottles of wine ( their Special Blend is my favorite) and have a wonderful time!!!! They have indoor seating right now and plenty of outdoor seating in the summer! You wont be disappointed!

2021-05-05Im not a fan of Ohio wines. Theyre just too sweet for me. The Chardonnay was decent. The reason I wont return here is the way we were treated when presenting a gift certificate. Apparently (and Im not sure if its legal), their policy is use it or lose it which is not printed on the certificate. Our gift certificate was $50. They had no food to offer because of Covid. They refused to either give us change or to put the balance amount on the certificate for future use. They suggested that we use it for the tip as there wasnt enough to buy a bottle of wine. They got themselves a very nice tip for being a self-serve establishment. BEWARE of Buying Gift Certificates.
