Always friendly, great service, good food. Captains platter has great combo of shrimp, walleye bites and perch. All deep fried. Not cholesteral friendly but tasty. Triple decker club sandwich and berry crisp ala mode dessert. All tasty. Only suggestion is a grilled walleye with lemon butter or wine or seasoned not cajun flavor.
Excellent food, service and a well stocked full bar. We had the patty melt and reuben for our meal. Fried pickle spears and brussel sprouts for appetizers. They were all delicious and one of the best ceasar salads Ive had. Definitely will come back next time we visit the area!
The lake in the name must mean Lake road and not lake Erie as one is initially inclined to think because you definitely cant see lake Erie while in the restaurant. Beyond that, its charming and cozy in there with a small bar and a patio in the back. Service is quick and friendly, the servers interact with the customers like theyve known each other for a long time. The menu, especially the breakfast one, is short and right to the point. Food was well prepped and presented. A great place to grab a quick bite.
This place is quite good. I had the Savannah burger, which is with blue cheese dressing. I think I read it as just bleu cheese, which I prefer. Dollops of the dressing squirted out as I was eating, getting all over my hands. Its a decent spot with hand made ingredients. It seems to be set up more for return customers, which I am just a passerby. So order your food and be specific about what level of done means, and how much dressing you want on your sandwich and youll get a 5 star restaurant experience.
I found my pretzel chicken to have to strong of a Dijon Mustard flavor. The green beans had no seasoning, and the baked potato came out plain with a side of sour cream. The service was a bit slow and inattentive. To be fair, you should order the perch. My family raved about it. Also the perogies as an appetizer were excellent.
I am reviewing Jakes On The Lakes outdoor (parking lot) dining. I would suggest only going to this restaurant if you are eating inside. The ambiance is very nice. However, when we got our food our experience quickly changed. We were unfortunately attacked with flies. They landed in our food, swarmed around our heads, landed on us and everything in between. It was actually so bad me and the three other people I was eating with were going to ask to take our food home in boxes. Sadly, by the time we had the chance to ask for a box the food was basically infested and my boyfriend actually ended up spitting out a fly. One person in our party was fully compensated for his meal. However, me and the two others were not. When I inquired why one person was compensated and I was not, the manager just told me that is the risk for eating outside. That is a fair statement but for $65 Id expect my table would have been able to eat more than a few fries and a bug. I would like to see some preventative measures taken to stop this from happening to other patrons. From my perspective I didnt see any measures being taken near the tented eating area. Our server and the host were very nice and Im sure the food is fine, but if you go to this establishment eat inside.
I met my parents here for lunch and they had a a grilled ham and cheese sandwich with some soup on the side and a Cod sandwich with fries. I had the soft tacos and they were quite delicious. I would definitely recommend them! Nice place, the atmosphere is relaxing and fun. Theres a back deck with tables and chairs to sit at. Theres a front area for congregating, to smoke, or just hang out. Also the wait staff was perfectly on point. Our waitress knew what she was doing and got it done. We never felt ignored or bothersome to her. She was on top of her game. So if you havent gone to Jakes on the lake then you should. Only downside is its not really on the lake its across the street from it.
My friend and I stopped in here to have dinner. It was a little chilly outside but we wanted to be outside because it was a beautiful evening. We were delighted to find they had bee traps because the bees have been so awful this time of year. They made us a decaf coffee drink that was fabulous! We enjoyed corn chowder and a chicken quesadilla. The staff was very friendly and the place was very clean!
Cozy casual eatery, a right sized and right priced menu, and friendly staff. Their Lake Erie Perch dinner is delicious as is the salmon and buffalo chicken pasta. Expect a wait on a Saturday at dinner hour or go early or especially late. Full bar, wine and beer available.
First time there and everyones food was amazing, from the prime rib (which to me may have been best Ive ever had) to the perch & walleye plate and the chicken pasta! All were fantastic. Service was spot on with friendly employees. We were there for dinner time at 6pm and didnt leave till almost 9pm. So if you are in a hurry this is not the place to go. Our wait was about an hr and our food seemed to take a bit long but was all worth the wait! We will be back again soon.
The food was very good, it was hot and fresh. My wife had the chicken club on the pretzel bun and I had a burger no bun.... it was brought out in a timely manner. My one massive complaint is when we walked into the restaurant no one really greeted us and although our server was good she never really greeted us either. Being a Chef myself in the business knowing that hospitality goes a long way.
In town for work. Wanted to go somewhere with a view of the Lake. No view. I forgot all about it when the food came. The beef barley soup was great. The grilled pork ribeye was the best piece of pork I have ever had. The service was fast and friendly. Im in Cleveland once a month for work. I will be back!! Thanks!!
Great place, nice restaurant setting with a neighborhood feel (no build up of store fronts around it) Great food too! Owner talked with us a bit and even gave some good recommendations of things to do in area as we were visiting the area. Definitely will be back next time we come through
Took the youngest & her crew to lunch, shouldve taken pics but didnt 😢. All I can remember was the food was very good and plentiful, prices were decent, eating on the back deck was a plus but indoor eating was available with lots of tables inside & out (full not empty) quite a popular place. Good food, good service, good experience.
Jake’s always goes above and beyond to ensure every customer leaves 100% satisfied with their meal. We are frequent visitors to Jake’s for both dine-in and takeout meals. We have always been greeted with a smiling face and the staff and ownership have always made sure our food/drinks were perfect. Keep up the great work Jake’s!
I was not impressed this time dining at your establishment, my friend I was with asked for his appetizer to be brought out first, never happened, I asked her a question about Military Discounts, she never bothered to ask management and give me a reply. Then I asked for onion rings instead of French fries well I didnt get my onion rings but I got french fries, so she had to put order in. And to top it off not once did she come to the table and ask either of us for a refill, just a total disappointment. And it wasnt even busy cause it was around 8 pm.
This place is good. Nothing spectacular, but the food was good. Our waitress was kind and prompt. Mostly an older crowd of locals here. The big turn off for me was that there were so many flies. I felt like I shouldve just sat on the patio. Also tables are pretty close together so theres not much privacy. But its a convenient location. My chicken sandwich was good & so were the wings. Good portions, average prices.
We noticed this place as we were taking a lakeside drive this afternoon. It was hard to miss people sitting at tables in a big parking lot! Having never been there before we decided it looked pretty inviting seeing as all the tables were properly social distanced. The wait staff was very nice and explained everything that was going on (no inside service due to restrictions, food prep, etc.) The food was AWESOME and we felt very safe eating in the provided environment. We WILL be back and hope we can bring friends along in the (near) future 😁
Atmosphere was inviting. Clam chowder was mostly potatoes but tasty. Tried walleye bites which were delicious. Middle of Friday afternoon yet plenty of customers. Service was great/not intrusive but met our needs. Parking lot was expansive but at least 1/2 full. Will definitely return.
Everything here is great! Great menu, great service, staff is friendly, prices are reasonable. Our favorites are perch dinners and the flash fried Brussels sprouts with red onion and bacon appetizers. Service is fast. The restaurant and bathrooms are clean. They have out door seating. Bar area is attractive. Naughtical themes abound. TVS are tuned to sports, but dont interfere with the music. These people work hard at making it a nice experience for the customer.
Had the opportunity to visit Jake’s recently for a take out order, I was pleasantly surprised at how well orchestrated the staff and kitchen functioned during the busy lunch time orders. It was no time at all and my food was ready for pickup. All of the regular menu items were still available along with each days specials. Appreciate that during these tough times with the virus shutting down most businesses, that Jim and Sharon and the staff just continue business as usual and reward us with that home town cooking we’ve come to expect. Love their chicken paprikas by the way. Keep up that hard work guys, again appreciate what you bring to the Avon Lake area and beyond.
This was the first time that I have visited this place, though, I have meant to stop for years. It has a homey atmosphere, great food, and excellent service! My Fierce Right Hand and I had a nice late lunch there today and it was great! I had the Captains Platter and my girlfriend had the Buffalo Pasta. Both were well cooked right down to the sides. The fish was lightly battered with a excellent texture and the pasta was perfect :) I will be making more regular stops there in the future
Visited yesterday for lunch for the first time. I had a shrimp dinner and it was delicious! I would have given five stars, but I had ordered an appetizer and had to remind server after she had brought out meal and forgot a grilled cheese sandwich for someone else in our party. Fortunately the appetizer was chips and dip and we could take it to go. Maybe it would help if server wrote orders down.
Was having dinner with a friend on the patio. After our meal we sat and chatted for a while (we haven’t seen each other in 17 years) and we were asked to leave the restaurant because they needed to seat other people. This was my second night in a row dining there. Needless to say I will never be back! Terrible service.
Lunch yesterday and there were 7 of us. Everyone was very happy with their choices. Comments about the delicious Cole slaw and spinach salad with salmon. Jake’s doesn’t take reservations, but I called Thursday morning and we had a table waiting., Never been disappointed in anything I’ve ordered. Best fish ever!
We were in the area looking for a place for dinner. This one popped up on Google. What a find! The prime rib was juicy and very tasty, the Ceasar salad was quite good. We arrived a little after 5 on a Saturday night and ha to wait about 20 min, but it was well worth it. Crowds had cleared by 7. Excellent choice!
I thought the place was great. I went there after a rehearsal the other evening with a couple of friends. It was a Friday and we were told there would be a 20 minute wait. In no time at all seats opened up at the bar. The place is very cozy. We all ordered something to eat. Jim the owner came by and said Hi. I knew him from this old place Savannah and Westlake. I had a chicken quesadilla and it was delicious. Beers are cold and the service is friendly. I really couldnt recommend it more. I like the atmosphere I like everything about the place.
The Prime Rib was tonights special. It said it was 10 oz, but believe me it was much bigger than that. It was cooked to perfection. I asked for Medium and thats exactly how it was cooked. The flavor was top notch and so tender. And the Au Juice was very delicious. Instead of the Cole slaw (which everyone in my party said was delicious) I requested the vegetable of the day, which were green beans. Everything was so good. I usually dont eat all of my food at one setting, but this was too good not to eat. For the first time in a long time I ate everything on my plate. Oh, the Ice Tea was also very good. Some places make their Tea too strong. In the past I had the fish and it was also very good.
I was not at all impressed with this extremely small restaurant. The prices are way out of line with the quality of the food. It is often overcrowded with long waits and the tables are extremely close together. Everyone seems to be trying to out impress everyone else. Not an extremely friendly atmosphere. It seems to be a popular place only because it is one of the few places in Avon Lake to dine in. I was not impressed with the $15 fish sandwich. I dont know that I would ever return.
Okay, so the food is great. Its sad to have to wait ten minutes for a waitress. Then we ask to move because the back hallway is the worst seating Ive ever seen in a restaurant. The floor bounces every time someone walk by and they bang dishes right behind your head. The second waitress never wrote down our order, so our appetizer never came. Way too crowded, dont know why they havent reopened in a bigger building. Not worth the drive, maybe for carryout.
Did not eat here just stopped for a beverage. Drink prices were reasonable. We did look at the menu and options were plentiful and prices fair. Staff was ver friendly and attentive. This is a locals place. Was fully Covid19 compliante with seperators at the bar and tables places a good distance apart. It is not very big so if coming for dinner, Id call ahead to reserve.
Went there twice. Breakfast was amazing. I had the Eggs Benedict and the put jalapeno in the hollandaise sauce. Breakfast was so good we went another day for the perch, which they are supposed to be known for. The perch was rubbery and very bland. I understand that it is probably out of season, but we had perch at another place the same week and it was really good.
This is our go to place when we want a good, wholesome dinner at reasonable prices. Entrees come with vegetable and side included which is a rarity these days. The atmosphere is like a big party in someones house. Everyone is friendly. Owner is almost always on site. They have the best perch and walleye Ive had anywhere at affordable prices. Their daily specials are always good. The only con is that its gotten so popular that its difficult to find a day or time in the evening that the place isnt packed. We dont even attempt to go there on Friday nights anymore. There is a reason for that crowd though so if you dont mind waiting in a crowd of friendly people, go for it. Would also love to see a vegetarian entree or two on the menu.
Nice place. We found parking easily, and right by the door. We were greeted and seated fairly quickly, and it was pretty packed. The food was really good. We got started with wings, and our mains were the Captains Platter and corned beef. Ill start with the good; everything was seasoned well, made fresh, and brought to us hot and quickly. The fries were fresh cut, and well seasoned. The shrimp were pretty typical, the walleye bites were good, but judging from the menu and just about everyones plate in the restaurant, the perch is the star. I was pretty excited to try it, and it was great. The batter was flavorful, and mostly crisp-more on that below. We also got some battered mushrooms, which were really good too. Now, what stopped this from being a 4 star review; the chicken wings were undercooked, the flesh closest to the bone was dark pink. To be fair, they were huge, but for our own safety we couldnt eat anymore of them, so we just boxed them up to finish cooking at home. Also, while I enjoyed the perch, my only issue was the lettuce tucked under the plate of coleslaw made the batter slightly soggy underneath the fish. Lastly, we were given a frosty glass for the beer in the background, unfortunately it was brought to us with an imprint from someone elses lip on it. It was replaced promptly, and I dont hold it against them.Is it worth a visit? Definitely. Most seemed to order the perch sandwich, which eliminates the issue I had, or get the platter and see if theyll serve it sans lettuce. If you decide to wings, ask for well done.
Been here a few times with friends, the food and service is always good. Great daily specials including Lake Erie perch, prime rib on Saturday, and hand cut French fries. One of the best things about Jakes is the prices making it one of the best values in local dining!
I love their food, and recently had the worlds best onion rings and a wonderful refreshing Ginger cocktail. The problem is that you cant always tell when theyre going to be open. I went recently with friends for lunch on a Saturday, and they were closed for a private party. There wasnt any way to tell that before we got all the way up to the door and tried to get in.
The building is dirty inside and out. Went on a Saturday and it was crowded and the inside is very small. There were many flies buzzing around inside and landing on our food. The food was pretty sub par. The battered and fried food was decent but everything else was mediocre at best. The crowd is 50+ not really an appealing place to eat.
A great place to enjoy a perch fish fry cold beer and friendly folks. Excellent assortment of sandwiches, burgers and American fare all prepared well and served quickly. Some upscale offerings as well. A large chalkboard features daily specials, food and drink. A real gem in Avon Lake on Lake Rd. Large parking area and cozy patio in back.
The food was great. I had the meatloaf dinner and a salad it was good. I took my 8 month old daughter with me. They have high chairs. But they did not have a chaging table in the mens bathroom. The server was nice, she was going to wait by the womans bathroom door while I change my daughter diaper. Because the changing table is in the woman bathroom. But I will go back to eat with my wife and daughter the food was good at atmosphere
Lets be clear, Jakes is near the lake, but you cant really see it. Still, you come to a restaurant to taste more than see and taste you will! The perch Reuben was delicious and my batch of fries was fresh, hot and delicious. The salad was good too! This not the easiest place for a wheelchair, so call ahead.
Food is really good if you eat in. But definitely wouldnt recommend ordering take out from here. We ordered take out and the food was soggy, cold, greasy, overall just very poor. We were very dissapointed. Im not sure what changed recently but this was not up to par with what we were expecting from Jakes on the Lake.
You HAVE to try the chili!!! It is award winning for a reason. We live in BG, OH and had to take 2 bowls home! We ordered a few appetizers after PlayCle. It was the perfect place! Ita not on the lake but it is worth the drive just for the food! Our food never sat under a warmer and everything was Hot and fresh. The french fries with malt vinegar were delicious too! Best fries ever too. Our 9 year old enjoyed his fries dipped in chili.
Awesome place with great food, but the owner can keep his comments to himself when presenting your food. He made rude remarks when serving my veggie burger. Also where are the old staff? A new server with blond bob is extremely rude. We have been coming to Jakes for years but lately, the service is lacking.
Terrible experience. Got seated by the door. Super cold. The server or the kitchen messed up our order. Then the guy that brought the food spilled half the fries off the plate. Didn’t say a word. Not a sorry not let me get you some more. My plate was a greasy mess anyways.
4 out of 5 because the place where I was sitting had flies around the place. If there were no bugs around I would have rated a 5 star. I was in dishwashing position and I was also a Plumber, Electrician and Janitor all in one plus Dishwasher. I know OSHA standards as well, as well as food safety. And flies are a no go in a restaurant. Clean up a bit and try your best to be cleaner. Otherwise the food was good, and the laughs were great.
Visiting here on a Saturday morning felt like I had gone somewhere for a vacation, not sure what specifically evoked the origins of the areas development before it became suburbia. It just, for a moment, felt like I was having breakfast at a lakeside resort-town.Beyond that, enjoyed a good omlette and appreciated the fast service and a large mug of coffee.
The service was very bad. The waitress was terrible! She didnt bring our food out, someone else did. Did not come back to our table until we were three quarters done with our meals. Food was not very impressive nor were the drinks. Third time there wont be going back. I do not recommend!
The kitchen door is disgustingly dirty, and servers put their hands all over it. cant tell last time it was washed. back door to deck the same way. Tried to tell managers, not there. Health hazard beware!!!! Food was good until I saw where it was coming from!!! Kitchen floor was very dirty. Ate there 2 times. no more after sitting in back by kitchen.
I grew up going here when it was Herbs and was pleased that Jakes has kept up the same family friendly, good food and casual vibe. As an out of towner now, I was excited to get pierogis (other than frozen Mrs Ts). Not sure if they are made in house but they were darn good! My parents enjoyed their burgers too. We loved the gentleman walking around outside handing out cups of draft beer while we waited for our table in the summer heat.
My husband I had driven past Jakes many times; however, the parking lot was always packed. We happened by on an off time between lunch and dinner, when it wasnt as busy. The chicken soup and chili were both delicious, just like homemade. Their lake perch sandwich was delicious, as well as their Diablo calamari. They give ample portions; especially, for what they charge. Obviously, a great combination and the reason why theyre always busy. We will definitely be back.
I like the food and mostly like the service....they can be a little fast in their questions and answers. (Ask a question, then walk away as they are answering it.) Saw a sign on the wall that was a fish with the words BLOW DICK on it. Did not appreciate that. Dont want to think about that when Im eating. If it werent for the sign, I might give you 4 stars.
Food was really good. Service was horrendous. Sat at the bar and genuinely cant remember the last time Ive ever dealt with a server/bartender thats so rude and dismissive - and my husband and I go out of our way to be easy!! Meanwhile, another waitress was swatting flies literally right above our heads/food. Its a shame the service alone singlehandedly ruined the experience.
Decided to come here with my boyfriend on his birthday for lunch. We were seated promptly upon arrival. The restaurant itself wasn’t busy at the time, it was a weird hour between lunch and dinner. We sat down and took a look at the menu. A very unenthusiastic sever came over to get our drink order. My boyfriend asked if they had iced coffee, she said no (how difficult is it to make iced coffee?) so he ordered an ice water. Please keep in mind my boyfriend and I have both worked in the restaurant industry for 10+ years. So, now she asks what I would like to drink. I ask if there’s an drink menu available so I can see what kind of alcoholic beverages they offer. She responds to this by saying “well like, what do you want?” My response “I’m not sure, I guess I would just like to see what you have” she then proceeds to literally roll her eyes and walk away without saying a word. She returns with a drink menu and says she will be back when I’ve made a decision. While looking at the drink menu, under beverages it says in black lettering ‘Coffee, Iced or Hot’ WOW. Unbelievable. How freaking lazy is this girl? My boyfriend convinced me to bite my toungue and not say anything about it. She comes back, I order a blue moon bottle. She asks to take our order. God forbid we asked any questions about the menu at all. She could not be more of a miserable human being. The rest of our experience was okay. Although our food was good, our sever never even bothered to come back and check on us; but had all the time in the world to stand by the sever station, socializing with her coworkers while texting on her phone. This should have been a memorable experience and was completely ruined by our sever who doesn’t know how to treat a stranger with any respect whatsoever. As a restaurant I have gone to for many, many years, I am hesitant to return. I take my serving job very seriously, it sickens me that people like that get to walk away with money in their pocket. They are detrimental to a business and only force people to not want to return. Not to mention, she didn’t upsell us at all. Our check amount would have been way more if she wasn’t so lazy to bring the coffee instead of just saying they don’t have it. I would have had a few more beers but she didn’t even ask if I would like another. We planned on dessert but forget it, she didn’t even mention it. She just wanted to go back to socializing and smoking cigarettes. Be weary of your server here. I just hope no one is as unlucky as we were.
Jakes on the lake is a quaint lil place on Lake road. Despite its name it is alas not actually on the lake side of the road. Its so still a great place to get some Lake Erie perck, or perhaps a burger, or even their famous Corned Beef. The servers from the door to our seat and back out are fabulous. Check this spot out!

2022-05-08I went here as a kid and then for my 4th anniversary with my girlfriend. I’m not huge on fish but both Walleye and Perch were great. You’ll usually have a wait cuz it’s a hotspot in a busy area, but it’s great for a date.

2022-06-12I have been going 2 Jakes since it opened and always had very good - excellent food. It was a godsend during the pandemic. A few months ago I got takeout and my fries were like rubber but my ribs were good. I stopped by and picked up food again and my usually very good fries were horrible, so I stopped going.Yesterday I figured Ill skip fries and get potato skins and onion rings. Onion rings were good the potato skins were burnt not over cooked burnt. I havent dined in for years but take out was always good. I dont know what has changed.I also sat on hold for 15 minutes just to have someone pickup and hang up and had 2 recall. Im done with them.

2022-06-08Good food, good drinks, and a nice variety on the menu. We waited to be seated about 20 minutes. It was worth the wait. I had the perch sandwich and my husband had the regular burger. Both were very good. We also shared the onion rings, very good.

2022-04-14Jakes is one of those spots that I cant help but love. It has that quaint neighborhood bar feel but with a kitchen that also makes some good food. On this visit (first time back in a couple of years) I had a really good blackened walleye (yes folks, walleye can be eaten without being breaded and fried). It was served with my choice of potatoes (I went with the yummy red skin variety) and green beans. The portions were generous and priced right. The brussel sprout appetizer was also very good. When we arrived they warned us that they were short handed, but you would have never known. We had great service and didnt have to wait long for anything. I am so glad we drove an hour for dinner this particular evening.

2022-04-19Our first visit was on Good Friday and we had a wait for lunch, however very well worth it. Staff and Food were excellent. definitely a do over road trip.
