What an experience last night! The place was loud and the tables were kind of close together. The service was slow and inattentive. But, the food and drinks were sublime! An awesome whiskey and wine list! A very limited menu (4 or 5 entrees and three apps) but everything we ate was spectacular! I personally had the Pork chop...juicy and perfect char, served with very crunchy super delightful fingerling potatoes, brussel sprouts and a swipe of horseradish cream sauce which was divine. Two people at my table had the salmon great reports from both! And one person had the fresh catch which was halibut, a win too! We had all the apps, lamb meatballs, great and cheesy with bread, fried cauliflower, my favorite, and chicken wings, awesome sauce!!!!!
Place is small and overcrowded. Went to get a good steak. There was only 1 on the menue. The unlisted special. We ordered 2. They dont let u pick how u want it done. Will only do medium rare. Which for me is OK except they came out less then rare. $42 each for a cold stringy fatty cut. I dont mind paying for a good steak but the food quality doesnt match the price.
Our first time here. Food is really good. Braised beef cheek was so tender and moist. My first time on elk chop. Cooked to perfection to medium rare. The polenta was so creamy. The steak frite is great too. Finished off with dessert of the day. Very good experience. Next time I come back for the bourbon and whiskey.
Yup, this place was great. We went on a Saturday and didnt have reservations so we were offered the bar or the chefs bar. We sat at the bar as it looked super cozy. We started with some cocktails and the beef cheek. They were both amazing. For dinner I had the scallops and my husband had the elk special. Both were delicious. Staff was friendly and we will be back!
Situated in the historic downtown area of Willoughby, this is an understated elegant restaurant with a unique menu of dishes that are thoughtfully designed with fresh ingredients. Nothing here is bought ready made. Did I say everything is fresh! The service is friendly and the employees are knowledgeable. The drink list is EXTENSIVE! Many options for the person looking for allocated rare items. The picture below is the catch of the day-halibut- with bok choy. Yummy!
This was quite possibly the best restaurant in Cleveland. The old fashions were on point, the appetizers were delicious - pierogis, cauliflower, and bone marrow - the elk chops were absolutely fantastic, and the deserts and coffee made this dinner a work of art. We will be back and Im looking forward to trying more delicious food and Bourbon on their menu!
First off, our server was amazing! She took the time to answer my group and Is questions on topics such as the restaurants history and recommended drinks & dishes. I started with the Mai Tai and was surprised by the amazing cup it was poured in! My group and I definitely at a laugh at its quirky design. Rub the butt for good luck 😉For food, I opted for something easy on the wallet. The $8 clam chowder. I asked our server if about its portion size and if it will be filling. I was skeptical at first but when I actually finished the chowder, I realized thatits flavor and ingredients satisfied my tummy. I did not expect to have some hearty sausage in my chowder! That sealed the deal for me. Oh and the butter for that cornbread was also delicious! Ill definitely try more drinks and dishes at this place!
A wonderful hidden treasure in Willoughby. The service was wonderful, the bar inventive, and the food delicious! We started with the duck wings which were served well paired with a house bourbon bbq sauce garnished with fresh wispy dill. Super crispy, sweet and tangy which played well with the extra fat of the duck. Six large wings to an order!Next the fried brussel sprouts in a sour but savory asian flavor profile with a clever garnish of crushed wasabi peas on top were a highlight of the whole meal. Served in a large bowl these easily fed two and could have served many more as an appetizer. My wife ordered the butchers cut- a 14oz Ribeye on this night served with a creamed spinach gratin that was to die for! MP was a very reasonable $34.I had the wedge and paired it with the smoked clams/mussels. The salad is served with a creamy and sweet take on a blue cheese buttermilk dressing off set by a large and salty piece of fried pork belly. The smoked clams/mussles were served steaming in a pot of delicious broth formed with smoky chorizo, lager, and coconut milk. Large crusty pieces of baguette were perfect for dipping. I need to impress upon the portion here, this can feed a table of 4-6 as an appetizer and even as an entree could easily feed 2 as I brought about half home. Finally the cocktail list, especially the wide variety of whiskeys, is impressive. While all our cocktails were well prepared and tasty, the most impressive was I believe titled the Oakland Park. A beautiful scotch forward drink made with Suntory and Blood Orangecello served with a table side smoke presentation. Wow!Overall an amazing experience, we will be coming back again and again. If you appreciate the food buy the kitchen a round for after hours. $12 to spread a little Modelo joy to those hard working cooks is priceless. This should be a haunt for everyone in the Willoughby area!
My fiancé and I had our rehearsal dinner here October 22nd. We couldn’t have been more pleased with the atmosphere, service, food and drinks! This small place is absolutely adorable and so cozy! Unfortunately I cannot remember our waitress’s name but she was exceptional! When finding a place near Squire’s Castle for our rehearsal I searched best restaurants in the area and Google did not disappoint! My family is already talking about going back again.
We were in town for a sporting event for our son and looked up best places to eat in Willoughby. This place came up first. So glad we decided to go here! Drinks were great! Mussels and meatball apps were so good I was upset when we finished. Had pork chop for dinner. Also delicious. Fruit cobbler for dessert was the perfect ending to a great meal! Hope to be back in town again soon to come again!
A true hidden gem! Very cool classic high class place. You can dress nice casual and be right at ease. However, the sleeveless flannel shirt may make one feel uneasyThe drinks....superb is too weak of a word. The food....oh the food..... excellent is an understatement. The staff from the hostess to waitperson to bar staff to chef are all very welcoming, will stop by frequently to make certain you are satisfied. We had three adults drinks and dessert, all first rate.VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Used to be amazing. Can’t seem to get stuff right anymore. The last four times I’ve been there, I’ve received well done meat when rare was ordered. Four. Waiting 45 minutes during off peak hours for an overcooked piece of meat is unacceptable in any esteemed culinary establishment. C’mon, I know you’re capable of much better. It sucks, I’ve spent literally thousands here in the past 3 years. Im sorry, but I hate to leave such a review a place I love, but that’s the last taste this restaurant gave me.
A great place to have a special bourbon with special friends. They have as good of a selection of bourbon as anyplace I have been in Lake County. They even have three types of Pappy Van Winkle. But if your are not wanting the top end, try the 3 ounce rock pour of Weller Reserve for about $15.
My wife and I just ate here for the first time and it was honestly the best meal we have had in years. The drinks, the appetizers, the salad, and the entrees were all absolutely perfect. I’ve never written a review about anywhere before but I had to after eating there tonight.
Excellent food & spirits: Find this place! You wont be sorry!Loved the ambiance! Right in the heart of downtown Willoughby. We just HAD to go back time and again to sample their incredible food and lovely selection of wines, whiskey & bourbons. Must give a shout out to Homestead House B&B, right around the corner from The Hook and Hoof. It was the Perfect place to stay!
Not worth it! Tried Hook and Hoof for the first time. I will not go back. Spent $32 for a meal that was a bowl of beans with a small, overcooked, bland, piece or fish on top. No salad, no bread, nothing but that sad bowl of muck. Wished I had left and went somewhere else.
Food was delicious! We had short rib shells which were shredded semi sweet beef stuffed in large pasta shells. Also had lamb belly meatballs that were in marinara sauce and cheese. For dinner my bf had the pork chops which he said was juicy and I had the elk medium and beans. My elk was cooked perfect and tasted amazing. The service was great. Our waitress was attentive. We will be back!
Man what’s up with the frozen vegetables? So close to a 5 star, as in a place I would gladly make multiple visits during a short visit. The tomahawk pork chop was fantastically prepared, the cocktails were amazing, and service was fantastic- and then there were the frozen vegetables. Why oh why would you get a meal 90% perfect and then use frozen vegetables?Seriously though make a visit here if you’re in the area it’s worth it, I did enjoy my time here. There’s also a very robust bourbon menu- that alone is worth the trip.
Delectable entrees, scintillating cocktails, alluring atmosphere and flawless service. What more could you want from a fine dining experience? Im not much into whiskey, but they have an extensive menu and experienced bartenders. The elk is a must as well as the cowboy beans and the smoky yellow potatoes. Enjoy!
One of the best new restaurants I’ve been to in awhile. The food is incredible, and their cocktails are expertly crafted and very unique. Great for bourbon lovers. The owners also put a lot of thought into their bourbon collection, and they have their own barrel of Blantons Single Barrel bourbon that is a must try. Moreover, the staff and chefs are dedicated to getting your order EXACTLY how you like it. One time, I got a slightly overdone (medium instead of medium rare) filet mignon, and informed the waitress. The chefs actually had me come back in the kitchen and explained their process and confirmed exactly how I wanted it done. Needless to say the next filet was the best I’d ever had. Best customer service I’ve ever experienced in a restaurant! Will always come back, especially for special occasions
My daughter was in town and took us to dinner here. I had the steak frites which was one of the best things I have ever eaten. Everyone enjoyed their meals which included fish, scallops and pasta. Drinks were excellent. We shared a couple of desserts and the bruleed cheesecake was the favorite. The place is small and cosy but got pretty loud by the time we were leaving. Not really in my budget as on the pricier side, but would definitely go back. A great special occasion place.
My boyfriend and I came here accidentally because the restaurant we drove 45 minutes to eat at was unfortunately closed for the night. (It was halloween, to be fair.) We were hesitant because we both feel that some people choose to highly rate expensive places just because they spent a bit of money there. This place isnt crazy expensive but were in our 20s so we dont have the funds wed like yet to go eat at every decently priced restaurant. All that being said, we were super pleased. The atmosphere, the service, the food, outstanding. I got the pork chop and he got the swordfish. We highly recommend both! The chef even asked us how our meal was at the end. Nice touch. A happy accident.
Twice I’ve tried to show off my hometown by taking guests to the Hook and Hoof. Both experiences were disappointing. Both times the order was screwed up. Last night I urged my guests to start eating as I had to wait another 15 minutes for my order to be delivered. Once you get it the food is excellent, and the server couldn’t have been sweeter but the kitchen clearly needs more chefs bc they can’t keep up with demand or keep the orders straight. For those prices, you need to function on a higher level.
Absolutely fantastic. we dined here after a big hike in the nearby metroparks, and it was perfect. from service to ambiance to the creative menu, we were taken by it all. and the market garden prosperity wheat was tasting especially delicious in this warm and friendly setting....
First time diners, and have to say it was an outstanding experience! The atmosphere and service were outstanding. Now the most important thing in any restaurant is the food, and it was exceptional! My wife and I had the Tomahawk Pork Chop it was delicious! The size of the cut to how it was prepared, perfect! Hunter And Chaz have created a unique dinning experience in DTW!
Wow! Hook and Hoof is truly a Willoughby and Lake County gem! Alway an enjoyable dinner spot, but I want to give a shout out to the New Year’s Eve menu! It was amazing! We will be back for other dinners, but tonight’s NYE was amazing! The food was excellent and the specialty cocktails were unbelievable! Thank you to the owners and amazing wait staff! Don’t miss out - book a reservation for 2020 and treat yourself!
I came here on a Friday and there was a large crowd. It seemed that every table had diners and the bar was full. I reserved my table on Thursday night using their reservation tool on the website, which I found pretty convenient. We arrived, and the place looked great. However, the table we were allocated was stuck way back in a hallway half way to Narnia, next to the restrooms. It was very odd. There were actually a couple of tables lined up here against the wall. I dont understand why those tables were there in the first place. Your only interaction with the world outside of your own dinner table are just people going to and from the restrooms nodding to you as they pass if you happen to make eye contact. And why wouldnt I, the only thing Ive had to look at the entire time is my date and a space heater sitting in the corner. I felt like we were in timeout and they were worried we wouldnt have acted properly if they put us in public. I would have never put those tables there, and if I ran out of space in the main dining room, I would have just had 3 less tables in my restaurant, but hey. Im not the owner and I dont run a kitchen, so what the hell do I know.Food was excellent. Everything was cooked right. Everything came out right. Everything came out quick. The server was friendly, and professional. She had issues trying to describe what a crispy fingerling was... but thats neither here nor there. The menu online is not consistent with the menu in the restaurant. I suspect the Chef keeps his menu rotating and the website is just not updated fast enough. Dont get to attached to something online and expect to find it once you arrive. It may not be there.
Although parking can be frustrating in Downtown Willoughby, I will do whatever it takes in order to make this my restaurant destination. Having only three visits under my belt, Im still exploring the eclectic menu. So far, so good! My latest visit included the Shrimp Cocktail - the BEST one Ive EVER encountered! The house made sauce is amazing and unexpected - in a good way! Top notch cocktails - top notch service - top notch atmosphere - top notch value. This venue needs to be on your punch list - the sooner, the better!!! I have become a Hook and Hoof junkie . . .
I have lived in lake county 4 years and the food and service at this restaurant is beyond exceptional by far one of the best meals ive had in my life I will be back regularly! Make sure to book your reservations in advance because this place is going to blow up as long as they stay on top of what they do best fresh food pan to plate, great service at a very reasonable price!!! Great job Hook and Hoof staff we will be back very soon.
Great food. Great service at the table. Why am I giving a bad review? We had a reservation for a table. Hostess took us back to our table which was a high top table in a hallway to the bathroom in the back of the restaurant. There are about 3 high tops back there and I wouldnt consider these as part of the restauran. We asked if we could get a real table in the restaurant when we were taken back to the back. Hostess said they were all full and no. So...we sat our the high top. Five minutes later another couple is brought to one of the other high tops. They complained (I guess a bit more than we did) and were seated at a normal table in the restaurant. I thought all of the normal tables were spoken for..or was that just complete BS given until someone complains enough to the hostess? IMO...those three high tops shouldnt be in the restaurant. If you need to have them there then make sure you make it 100% clear that you are reserving a high top table in a hallway to the bathroom and not a real table.
My girlfriend and I had dinner here several weeks ago and it was so delicious that my husband and I went again several days later for dinner!! I spent more than I planned because I couldnt decide what to eat so I ordered everything and ate it all!! It was worth every penny though!
Did date night with the significant other and our first place was packed full with a bar crawl event. So we saw Hook and Hoof had just opened across the street. We went in and sat in walk in seating in front of the Chefs kitchen. The atmosphere is modern and sleek. The wait staff was very friendly and happy to see us. Everything was great and then the food came out and completely blew my wife and I away. It was amazing. I did the Tomahawk and she did short rib pierogies. The plating was beautiful and the flavors were amazing. Everything was perfectly cooked and even got to tell the chef how impressed I was. He couldnt be happy to hear the compliments and thanked us for trying the place out. We also did desert and it was homemade cheese cake that was probably the best I have ever had. Even the drink menu, which is a small book of choices, are competitive with the surrounding area. Nothing is overpriced here and I really felt like I got my monies worth. I really was blown away how good the entire experience was and will definitely be back as part of normal date night rotations. Next time we will probably do reservations to make sure we can eat there.
We were a party of five. ALL the food was amazing with unique flavors, our server was great! The problem was the kitchen, the timing was way off. We waited a while for our salads to come out, then a bite later they brought the appetizer we were going to share, then the rolls and almost immediately after that they brought out our dinners, none of us were done with our salads, some of us were only half done and most of the appetizer wasnt eaten. Too pricey to be rushed and not enjoy each delicious course. They need to work on timing.
I realize that others may have had a great experience here, and I agree the food was good, but definitely not worth the price. We got the short rib shells and the scallops. The scallops were very good, but the short ribs had a strange flavor that we were less than impressed with. Our appetizer, lamb meatballs were okay, but nothing special. My main problem was the atmosphere and service. We went early (with a reservation) but were seated directly beside the bar. The bar was extremely loud and made it difficult to talk. Also, we were upset with our service, because we were never informed of their specials, so we ordered and later heard them given to another table. Also, we never received our bread, and when we finally noticed and asked, our waitress blamed it on the kitchen forgetting, and gave us some bread to go (although it was less bread then given to every other table). If you are a server, please dont blame the kitchen for forgetting food- I would have been less annoyed if she took ownership, even if it wasnt her fault. One other small note, we were asked if our dinner was for a special occasion, which it was (birthday) and this was never noted by the hostess or server. If you dont care, dont ask when making the reservation.Overall, a bit pricey, and a but loud. I believe you could enjoy this place, but we will not be going back.
Was excited to check out this new restaurant in dtw for our 9yr anniversary, found the restaurant to be nice but tight in space. The food was very good service from staff was also very good. So you ask why two stars, well the ac unit over our table had a leak and dropped on my wife and table the whole meal even! When this was brought up to management the said they had no other table and to just move out of the way of the drips. They then said they would cover a portion of the bill and then failed to do so. The manager came to the table said how he was sorry it was dripping, but that we were not entitled to a discount. This ruined the whole experience and we felt it was ever unsanitary for us. Don’t sit under the ac unit!
A busy new joint in the downtown Willoughby area. The ambiance is beautiful, though a small venue so make reservations early! The bar is a gorgeous dark wood, stocked to the top for all the fun different variations of cocktails plus they offer the traditional old fashioned cocktails too. Id stick to the traditional though Im picky when it comes to a well balanced cocktail. But the food! Delicious with that new American flair! I had the swordfish, which was perfectly cooked. My partner had the pork chop, which he raved about. Def worth a fun night out prices run slightly high, but worth it for that special occasion!
I visited this place twice. They serve locally sourced food that’s antibiotic and hormone free. Their bone in pork chop was amazing and the blue corn muffins are the perfect start to your meal. Not to mention their extensive drink menu. The one thing I didn’t like was sitting in the back along the wall. You kinda feel segregated from the rest of the crowd. Not sure if they can/will change this but that does make me think twice about going back.
I live in Cleveland with so many great innovative restaurants, and Hook and Hoof is worth the trip. The food and cocktails are truly some of the best around, and the intimate atmosphere is great. I dont see this as being good for groups, but it excels as a modern romantic date spot.
If youre looking for the best meal in Willoughby or sorrunding suburbs stop reading this and book this restaurant right now! I have eaten here four times and on each occasion the service, food, and libations were top notch. I will agree with the consensus and confirm the pork chop is the best Ive ever tried and I usually avoid pork. Also be sure to try a whiskey sour. The dining room is small. I suggest asking to sit at the chefs window for a more casual meal and interesting look into the kitchen.
Very good resturant, very tasty food. Service was fine. The reason for my 3 stars is the menu: it’s June and the menu was clearly fall and winter based. I ordered the scallops which were delicious, but served with butternut squash risotto-a fall staple. The salmon special was also wonderful tasting, but served with a root vegetable hash. Pumpkin lasagna is on the menu. While it sounds tasty, not meant for June. The poached pear salad was delightful, but the spiced poaching liquid used on the pear screams January. Where are you getting these ingredients at this time of year? They cannot be fresh or local. It’s time to update your menu for the season. That would make this an easy 5 star review and a great experience. Oh, if I come back in October and there is a strawberry poppyseed salad on the menu, I will cry.
Chaz Bloom and his team has out done themselves with this gem of restaurant in the heart of old town Willoughby. After being sat we were met by our fun and knowledgeable server Sarah who walked us through the extensive Bourbon, wine and cocktail list. Then after perusing the menu, I decided to go with the poached pear salad, lamb belly meatballs, Elk and boursin smashed potatoes, while my wife went with the Swordfish and added scallops. Since you can see into the kitchen, I gave the chef the ultimate approval by gnawing on my chops bones, haha. We decided to pass on the sweets and went with a liquid dessert, David Nicholson reserve. If you are on the fence about stopping in, wait now more. Coming from DC as a chef, bartender and foodie snob and I can tell you after 9 yrs in Ohio, this is the best meal and dining experience I have had to date. Thanks again and we will see you soon!!
We dined there for the first time recently. We sat at the chefs bar, giving you a full view of all the kitchen action on the other side of the window. Service was prompt and friendly, food arrived hot and fresh. The atmosphere is hot and noisey, making it harder to hold a conversation. We were there with a carnivore friend who really enjoyed the lamb belly meatballs with a side of brussel sprouts. Being vegetarian, we hoped they would have more dining options than were available. The pumpkin lasagna on the menu was not available, but they did have a beet risotto on special (which was just ok). In addition we also ordered a side of brussel sprouts and the crembroule cheesecake which were tasty.Understandably their name says it all, and we sort of expected that. We just wish there were more options available, even after speaking with our waitress about our dietary needs.
Hook & Hoof offers big city cuisine in a small town atmosphere. My husband and I enjoyed date night dinner here. We sat in front of the kitchen window, it was amazing to watch the chiefs interact with my husband while cook. They seemed to be very interested if we liked our meal. I had the shortrib stuffed shells they were amazing. My husband had the scallops, they must have been delicious he wouldnt let me try them.If you are looking for a unique place to go to dinner and dont want to drive to the big city, I recommend you go here.
What a joy to dine at this brand new eatery! A friend happened to notice it while shopping on Vine Street so we made reservations that night. One word...WOW!!! The poached pear salad was lovely with a light champagne vinaigrette. We followed that with the braised beef cheek toast...which was heavenly! We shared the salmon which was cooked perfectly, served over a farrow stew and the carmelized scallops with black truffle rissoto. Both were out of this world. Cant wait to go back to try the pomme frittes with maple bacon aioli (nothing wrong with that!). Congratulations to Hunter & Chaz on creating something very special! This is my new favorite : )

2022-06-10I have been there twice now. Service is excellent. Cocktails strong and interesting. Food outstanding. Terrific atmosphere. I will be back.

2022-07-03Great service and atmosphere and thats about all. The porkbelly was overly salted, to the point there was no pork taste. My gf got the halibut, which she likes but the polenta was just ok. The 14 ounce ribeye was cooked perfectly but, once again, overly salted. Not heading back.

2021-10-04Was looking for a new place to try for dinner with my brother and stumbled across Hook and Hoof online. Never thought I would try one of the best steaks I’ve ever had that night! I got the daily steak special, it was cooked and seasoned to perfection. Absolutely amazing food and drinks and a great ambiance as well. All the ingredients are fresh and change regularly depending on what is local and fresh, this is normally the sign of an amazing restaurant. However the service was only okay, make sure to set a reservation before you go as it was reservation only except for the bar. The hostess seemed kinda clueless about whether we could be sat at the bar or not without a reservation, besides this hiccup it was a great experience I would gladly have dinner here again!

2021-12-05Another great place to have in Willoughby! Be prepared for slow service, especially if its just the bartender taking care of the bar and the tables around the bar (2nd time weve experienced that; maybe its standard), but the food will make you forget that aggrevation. We had the shrimp & grits and the tomahawk pork chop. Both were as good as weve had anywhere, including down south for the S&G!

2021-09-17Let me start out by saying I never would have dreamed Id get the best shrimp and grits Ive ever eaten in Willoughby, OH... But thats exactly what happened. I have a hard and fast shrimp and grits rule. If its on the menu, Im getting it. I cant help myself. The shrimps they use are closer to lobsters. Theyre seriously massive. The red sauce was perfectly applied and obviously the grits were cooked to perfection.Remember, Ive eaten this entree in restaurants around the country and this was the best Ive ever had. 🤷♂️Ambience = Perfect. The lighting, the decor, the music. Everything was just right. The bourbon selection is as good as youll find outside of Kentucky. Our server Sarah was friendly, attentive, not overbearing, and just who we needed.Hopefully I get to keep working with the customer based in this area as Id like to experience all of it again.

2022-04-28Amazing experience here, the food is so well prepared. If you dont like rare to medium rare steak I wouldnt suggest it. Personally, I usually order my steak at a medium, but the steak here was such a great cut filled with flavor I didnt even care. My 7 year old daughter loved the food here as well and its usually very hard to get her to eat her protein haha. I can only assume that everything on the menu is amazing because the other menu items we had were great. Definitely a hidden gem that Im glad we found. Highly reccomend, the service was amazing too.

2021-08-02Came here on a whim and so glad we did. Food was delicious from the drinks to the dessert!! If the dessert we got was on the menu all the time I would drive the hour just for it!

2022-05-17I had dinner here several times before the pandemic: I found it delicious. I came back for the first time recently I think the quality declined a bit. I still consider this a very good restaurant (especially for the freshness of the ingredients), and both staff and location are very nice

2022-02-02My wife and I came to dinner on a Tuesday evening. We ordered a bottle of wine from the Bordeaux region, reasonably priced. Excellent bottle. Our appetizer was the clams and mussels served with bread for dipping. Exquisite flavors. My wife had the pork chop and I had the stroganoff shell stuffed short rib . We finished with tiramisu cheesecake- unbelievably delicious. Highly enjoyable meal.
