Very happy with this vendor! I am out of state and ordered a clematis vine which are hard to find here in the south. This particular clematis falls under my growing zone so I felt comfortable to purchase it. The plant arrived in just a few short days! The care that went into the packing of my plant was incredible! The plant was in a small pot packed with soil and no soil was released from the plant because it was all sealed up and the box had loads of thick bubblewrap to keep the plant protected! The plant itself was so healthy with a lot of leaves and a thick, healthy root system! A lot of roots!!! It came with a plant care stick which is always a plus! It was a nice touch that my order came with a Thank-you note from Hirts signed by a team member! What a nice, personal touch! I was completely satisfied with this, my 1st order! I even called the company on receipt of the box to thank them for the special care and handling they gave to my order for shipping and how healthy the plant was. I will be ordering from them again!
Buyer Beware!! I didn’t get any of the cactus shown in their picture or maybe just 1 of the plant in their MIX and Match (instant cactus-5). It’s fair to say I would get at least 3-4 same plants as I ordered in middle of July. They simply just gave you whatever they have extra or leftover. Even though they listed plant varies by season. To me, this is still misrepresenting because they did not included other pictures of cactus in it. Will not do business again.
I highly recommend this company. They have good quality products, strong and healthy plants with really good packing. My orange thanksgiving cactus that i bought from them originally never came no fault of there own it was holiday season and they refunded my money and recommended to try ordering it again in a couple weeks. Well it ended up comming after being little over two weeks late and just look at the beautiful plant that currently has 2 buds on it. Also the amount of soil u see in the pic is all the loose soil there was, i was very impressed. I put it in a terracota pot thats way to big for it but its still thriving . Oh also i never ordered a heat pad with my order but they were thoughtful enough to include it for free.
Its sort of hit or miss with them. Ive had few good experiences and some very bad experiences with them over my last couple orders. After my last order and losing $52, I decided to stay away from them (See the pictures to know why). They REFUSED to give me a refund for a sick, super small, pest infested (scale, gnats) plant. So if you dont want to take a risk of losing your money stay away of shopping online from this business. This place might be good for locals who can actually go there and SEE what theyre buying. For online shopping I do not recommend them. The description on their website is usually not accurate and the picture is deceiving and nothing like what youre receiving. On the positive side though, they ship quickly and packaging is not bad.
Ordered almost $200 worth of plants, they arrived 4 days late. The box was ripped open in multiple different places, all plants were smashed/spilled everywhere and a bunch of them had broken branches. Provided pictures and got a “sorry for the issue, they’ll grow back”. Never again.
I have to be honest - there are quite a few mixed reviews out there about Hirts, so I was a little nervous ordering, especially given the low prices. But sometimes I take the opinions of others with a grain of salt (some people are just never happy) and ordered a few small plants Ive been searching for to add to my collection through their website. And let me just say - I was pleasantly surprised! My new plant babies arrived safely and so quickly! Opening that box totally made my day!!! All of them were well-packed, healthy and arrived in beautiful condition! If Im splitting hairs, there was one tiny leaf on the crocodile fern I had to prune, but I think it had been that way prior to shipment. And they put tape around the pots/soil, so take your time to carefully remove. Bottom line - great selection of hard-to-find plants at bargain prices!
Very happy with the two orders Ive received from Hirts. The first was 3 Stromanthe Triostars and a Philodendron Melinonii. They arrived well-packed and healthy; the philo was huge! Most recent order was a Ficus Elastica (again, huge!) and a string of dolphins. Prices are very reasonable.
Today I visited Hirts Gardens, in person, for the first time (05/23/2019). From other reviews, it seemed to be prudent to have an idea of what I wanted in advance, so I looked through the website first. I decided on three pink early bird dianthus for a container planting (see photos). When I arrived at the nursery, an employee asked me right away if she could help. She took me directly to the greenhouse with the dianthus and helped me choose my three. She provided me with a tray to help carry the plants, and then helped me find the packaged seeds when I asked about getting some carrot seeds for the garden. As I checked out, another employee brought over a bag of lady bugs to show my 4-year old son, and she even let him hold a couple to release. I couldnt have asked for a better experience. It is worth noting, that I have also ordered plants twice from their online store. An oak leaf hydrangea last fall and three brass buckle hollies this winter. The hydrangea, admittedly, arrived a bit rumpled, but rebounded quickly after being planted in the landscape. Ive included a picture of how it looks today.I emailed Hirts before ordering the hollies, to see if they would be shipped dormant (February), and whether they could be overwintered in my garage. I received a reply with the requested information the next day, and I ordered the hollies. They arrived, bigger and better than expected. They overwintered easily in the garage and are doing great so far in the landscape this spring (photo attached).I will certainly order/buy from Hirts in the future.
They have cool plants/nice selection and ship them with care. But everything I buy from here dies. I got tired of wasting my money and asked for a credit on the last ones and he was really nasty. What kind of business doesnt keep records of their sales? He doesnt care then I dont either. Moving on.
I would say this - if you want great value and grow it to be full and lush, this is the place. If you want a small plant that’s ready to be viewed on day 1 it’s not quite it. I got this HUGE monstera for $25, def worth it!!! The plants def had some leaf damage, like the monstera, the pilea and the Calatheas. But I’m not worried, it’ll grow back. Photos explain what I mean.
Ordered live pepper plants, rare seeds, strawberry and asparagus roots on June 11th at 8pm PST. On June the 14th they were delivered before noon. Wow! I could get used to this. Two of the peppers are in phenomenal shape! The 4 that came together look yellow and sad. I think they should bounce back, but it is obvious they did not get enough sunlight before being shipped (minus one star for that). The asparagus roots came with instructions! That is fabulous. They look succulent and in great shape. They are going in a raised beds I prepared for them today. I expect them to stay there for 15 years. The strawberries look okay. I am new at trying my hand at growing 4 varieties. I used to think it was a waste of time because the berries would be so small. I ordered a larger variety hoping that would help. They are going in the planter box of the picture. Crossing my fingers...The seeds...well lets see if they grow.
I always try to give the business a chance to make things right before writing a bad review but they really don’t care and people deserve to know so maybe they change and improve their products and customer service. I ordered plants two times from this place several plants each time. Seems like it’s hit or miss. On the first order Most plants were ok except for a banana plant that was the right size but a bit mistreated I though, oh well the issues of shipping live plants, so I’m still trying to recover it. The second time I received again a messy box with some plants looking ok and others not so well. But the real tip of the iceberg was a eucalyptus “plant” that arrived as a single lonely branch.. go back to their webpage not at all what they advertise and tried to contact customer service. Very unhelpful response of, “that is the plant, sorry you’re disappointed” I will not order plants from this place anymore. I really wish they had better customer service.
Visited this place for the first time today, did not find it unpleasant at all. When you walk in the main entrance, you are walking into a shipping center. there had to be 12-15 people working on filling orders at 3 different stations. I asked about specific item and a young gal took a moment from her work to show where I might find it. There are several greenhouses off the main building. I was free to roam each and every greenhouse at my leisure, as long as I stayed out of their way when they were pulling plants and carts, no problems. Its spring, they are busy. This is NOT a garden center, there is no eye candy. I was told not to touch any plants on the metal racks, those were pulled for orders. From what I saw at a quick glance, all the plants on those racks appeared to be healthy and nice looking. I did find quite a few of the items on my list, plus a few I have never seen before! I am intrigued by this place. This not the place for a novice, if you have questions, do your research online or go talk to people at a garden center. I plan on returning each month to see what they get in. I am posting pictures of a plant that was in the tropical houseplant greenhouse that I have never seen before.
I had never heard of this place but found the website when searching for some plants for my terrarium. Based on the selection and good reviews I ended up ordering 8 plants. The shipping price had me hesitant but it turns out it was well worth it. They were shipped the next day and took two days to arrive. The box was a little banged up thanks to USPS but the plants were packaged so well that it didnt make any difference. Lots of bubble wrap and other packaging kept them safe. All of them looked just as healthy and perfect as the pictures. Very satisfied customer.
Perhaps my experiences have been great because I am able to shop in person, but I love Hirts. The prices are amazing and everyone is helpful and friendly. They have finally started putting name spikes in the plants which helps in identifying varieties, and their new checkout uses their website for pricing so people can be sure it is accurate. Drawback, they rely on you to do the same. Prices are not on the plants. Occassionally there are bugs and pests on the plants, so shop with care, but this would be normal for any greenhouse setup. These plants all were about five dollars and are healthy and growing quite well.
Super disorganized, seems the place does more amazon sales than local. I could hardly move around with all the stuff everywhere, and figuring out who works there vs regular people is pretty impossible. I found it to be a pretty oddly cold environment not meaning temperature. The plants I couldnt identify over 3/4 due to no markings or tags, and I didnt see any prices on anything.. HOWEVER, they have a real unique selection which is why I went there. Unless you need something specific it may be easier to visit somewhere else for normal garden plants.* Edit- Over a month ago I gave them three stars but Im taking back all I can. I bought over $70 in plants from these people, and half are fruit bearing like peppers etc. NOT ONE plant has done anything except completely die. I bought home depot plants at the same time, all but 1 lived fully, and all produced fruit... So, I dont get the issue here, aside from this place is AWFUL.Should you shop here: NODo they have any warranty on plants: NOAre they Friendly: NOAre products clearly priced: NOIs the store clean: NOIs the entrance easily identified: NOIs the store easily navigated: NOAre staff available to help: NOAre the products Quality: NOAre the products Unique: SOMEUnless you want a plant they specifically ONLY have, then go there, otherwise you are wasting your time.(I bought 6 Currants 3x varieties, a ghost pepper, a reaper pepper, a kiwi, and a few tomatoes) (None have grown at all, none produced any flowers or fruit, 3/4 have fully died.)
This month was my first time ordering from Hirts Gardens, and I was so pleased, Ill order again. My order, So White Whirling Butterflies/Gaura, was filled promptly, and the plants arrived expertly and safely packaged, no damage. They are good-sized, healthy plants, and Im so glad I found Hirts!
I ordered a fifty dollar plant in a 3 gallon pot. Black beauty elderberry, if anyone cares. I received a tiny twig in a maybe 4 inch pot. When I called I was told they were unable to do anything on the phone and I needed to send an email. When I called back nearly four hours later (2/3 of their business day)I was verbally accosted by two employees. I was treated as if I was in the wrong, my concerns were scoffed at and I was eventually hung up on. I was accused of being rude and talking over people, but that is more projection than truth. I talked over them when they repeatedly spouted nonsense. My concerns were not treated as valid and once I get the shrubbery, I will never do business with Hirts Gardens again. I was told IF there was a mistake it would be fixed and my email would be answered eventually. They dont deal with customer email, like mistakes, until they get all their money for the current day. If you paid them before whatever day you contacted them, you go to the end of the line. And really, why not? They already have your money.
Wow, I will never order from anywhere else. I ordered 10 Clematis and 4 rose bushes. I received them within 5 and 6 days of ordering. All healthy, all are thriving. The packaging was fantastic and gentle on the plants. They also sent a heat pack with the order to keep the plants warm during shipping. I am definately ordering more products...
I bought a Pink Champagne Clematis - Deep Pink/Light Mauve/Yellow Anthers - 2.5 Pot (SKU 45876042Plant), on 6/3/2020. The order number is #3380424. This year the plant started flowering and the color is dark purple. I thought it was an honest mistake and this morning I called their customer care number to inform about this. The lady was rude and hang up on me, saying that they have a 90-day policy and cant do anything beyond that. I understand that the company has a 90-day policy. But do they have a policy of cheating customers? How can someone expect to see a tiny clematis (about 6 inches) will flower within 90 days? Now I have a strong suspension that they did it on purpose. Please stay away from them.
I can’t recommend this place highly enough. It is family owned, intimate, and a happy place to be. I recently found myself there and the owners were so incredibly kind to my children. They let my daughter talk their ear off about flowers and showed her all of the adorable holiday things they have. It was magical and fun and I can’t wait to go back again! In today’s economy it’s hard to find small businesses like this. Everything is so commercialized. Do yourself a favor and go here. Support local. It is worth the experience and keeping the amazing small places alive
I dont normally write reviews but Ive had multiple fantastic experiences with this business. For one, they package their plants beautifully, and the quality in health of their plants is apparent. Also, I had recently made an order and had one mistake that was understandable, a plant looking very similar to the one I ordered. However, I wrote an email explaining the mix up and they IMMEDIETLY responded the next day and gave me a refund for the plant that I did not receive. I also want to add that this is only one small mistake (during a busy holiday season no less, so completely understandable) in the many orders that Ive done with them.I HIGHLY recommend ordering from them if you are looking to order plants online, whether it be for a gift for a loved one or just for your own collection.
They USED to be my go to! I Loved their selections and the affordable shipping. Now they jacked up their prices... Jacked up shipping prices, while still using flat rate boxes. 🙄 it always rubs me the wrong way when nurseries try to make money on the shipping rates.Hirts is no longer where I go first. Ill browse there and shop elsewhere. Its disappointing they decided to inflate all the prices, 👎. Plant prices nearly doubled over what they used to be.
This review is for a plant purchased online via the Hirt’s Gardens shop on Etsy.I ordered the plant a few days before Thanksgiving, and was worried about how it would fare with the extra days in a box. First of all, it arrived a day early! And then, it was packaged extremely well, not a leaf or berry out of place! The photo was taken immediately after receipt. I am shocked that it actually has berries! No one can guarantee the life of a plant once it’s in someone else’s hands, but Hirt’s Gardens has done their best to provide a healthy seedling (or rooted cutting?) with the best possible chance of survival. The transaction was easy, communication was great, and the plant is beautiful. I highly recommend ordering from this nursery!
This nursery has a huge variety. The staff are very knowledgeable. A plant variety was not available at my last visit, but the staff recommended another variety. I am very happy with their suggestion. They are an online seller, but also have walk-in sales. Check the hours before you plan to go.
I had a bad experience. I ordered two bonsai trees through EBay. When I received them, they were super dehydrated. One of the plants, Chinese bird plum tree had a ton of scales all over. I sent messages with photos to Hirt’s through EBay. No response. A week later, I opened a case and finally they replied and asked for more photos.I told them that I already threw away the plant and I can’t take more photos.(They asked photos with their plastic pot)I explained that they didn’t reply to me when I sent the messages.Basically they ignored my messages until I opened a case. There is no proper customer service or care.Consuming lots of emotions and hurt feelings.I won’t purchase any plants from Hirt’s ever.NO NO NO!
Great selection of plants and seeds, and such fast shipping! Every delivery I have gotten from Hirts website has been great - plants all thriving and packaged well. I recently placed an order for some houseplants for my moms birthday, since I will not be able to visit her due to current events. I was so thrilled the package arrived to her on the day of her birthday. Thank you, Hirts Gardens, for helping me get my mom a great birthday gift in a difficult time!!
Disappointing. They had a good amount of plants but nothing was organized what-so-ever. Dead plants mixed in along with plants that looked nothing like the website photos. Also nothing is priced either. When I say nothing, I mean nothing.I think they are more focused on shipping plants then the physical store. There was about 4-5 people packing up orders. It was my first time there and I did spend a good amount of time there, no talked to me except when I was checking out. When asked why isnt anything prices, she told me to just check their website. Seems very backwards for me. I likey wouldnt be return for awhile
Wow, this company works hard! I have made two orders from their website and one on Amazon. When my seeds from Amazon didnt germinate and one of my perennials didnt live, Matt responded to my email the same day, refunded for both items even though the seeds are not guaranteed, replaced the live plant. When I made a 2nd order on their website, one of my plants was shortened on the quantity. Matt responded immediately and not only replaced the one plant, but added two more of it. I am so impressed and will order from them again!
Multiple greenhouses and an absurd collection of plants and plant products. Since we live fairly close by we decided to drop by this place rather than order online and pay for shipping. We were fairly suprised at the selection. There were multiple employees willing to help or answer any questions.
I ordered 4 plants from Hirts online. Although their prices are good and they have a good selection all 4 of the plants looked really bad when they arrived. I’m sure they were fine when they were boxed but they don’t package the plants well enough. The nursery pots were almost empty of soil and the leaves were broken.
I was unfortunate to order a Nerpenthes from them through Amazon, which for some reason I dont understand why, theyre protecting them. These people took a pitcher plant, crushed the pitchers towards the center of the plant, wrapped it extremely tight with a shopping bag, then threw it in a loose box with no up arrow or fragility sticker before 2-day shipping it 3000 miles (Which, you DONT schedule a 10 day delivery and 2-day the plant ... ...). This plant was shredded on arrival, pitchers half full of dirt, and clearly cropped at the top. Amazon pulled the review claiming we cant review their company or products because of shipping concerns, which how exactly am I supposed to do that when the thing shows up mangled? Looking at the reviews here, its a bit more revealing why. I ordered my next ones from a competitor that arrived early and in nearly flawless condition.
The plant shipped to me was HALF the height advertised on Hirts website. Their excuse is plants come in all sizes. It took several emails to get them to provide the care instructions that they claim come in every box. I do not recommend doing business with this greenhouse.
I ordered from Hirts and visited there last year. Many plant varieties and prices were reasonable. I was planning to make a visit this spring but after visiting their website it appears that their prices have doubled. I find the prices too high for the small plants they sell.
I have ordered live plants and seeds over the last few years. Ive been very happy with their items. The few minor problems were quickly addressed to my complete satisfaction and without any difficulty. Id order from them again. I check their site frequently for new finds.
I am not very happy with Hirts. I bought 3 plants, as they arrived one was damaged, the Elderberry bush has only three little tiny leaves, too much money paid for the plants I received.I claimed the delivery and sent pics of the plants, the only answer I received was Both plants will be fine. Is that the goal to make sure that your customers are completely satisfied with your products?
This was my first time having plants shipped and I am very pleased! I received a snake plant, golden pothos (ivy), and lemon balm within 3 days of placing my order. The shipping took 2 days. All plants were in excellent condition and were packaged with care. I couldnt be happier!
I just received my order - 5 snippet lime weigelas and 3 lil ditty viburnums. Very quick shipping! They were well packed and the plants were healthy looking, probably the best looking plants Ive ordered from an online nursery. I have planted them and Im eager to see them in bloom.
They sent me a dead bamboo plant. I sent them a picture when it arrived showing that it was dead and they claimed it was dormant. 3 months later after plenty of warm weather there is no sign of new sprouts. They claim live plant sales are final and will not send me a new one even though the plant has been dead since they shipped it. They have no way of being sure a plant is alive when it is supposedly dormant. So they sent me a dead plant and wont send me a new live one.
I ordered a string of pearls plant for my mom for her birthday. I originally ordered from another company and they sent a burros tail instead. So I tried one more time and ordered from Hirts. The plant arrived yesterday and my mom was thrilled. The plant was undamaged and looked beautiful! Thanks Hirts Gardens for making my moms birthday so memorable. She will enjoy it for years to come. I know my mom will be ordering from you in the future. Its been a great experience!
I can’t write enough horrible things about them. I ordered a Meyer lemon tree through their amazon account and I accidentally put the wrong address. So I sent them an email within seconds of realizing my mistake and they said they will update the shipping address. The next morning I got an email saying they canceled my order because they cannot ship to the address that I provided. I called Hirt’s Garden and the woman who answered was EXTREMELY rude and said someone else must have bought it. Horrible nursery. No apology.
I found this by accident when I was ordering a lime tree as a gift for my husband. I found what I was looking for online, but Id waited too long and it was going to be late. When I looked up their location I couldnt believe my luck - they were less than 5 miles from my house and open to the public. I ran over, bought the small tree (which is still healthy going on 3 years and now has a couple small limes), and have been back countless times since. The place is always busy and energetic, but they never hesitate to help. Just be forewarned, if you go in there for just one plant, you wont be able to stop there.
I’m almost hesitant to give Hirts the glowing review it deserves. It’s a secret I would like to keep to myself. After two large orders with everything exceeding my expectations, I want to buy ALL of their plants. ;)I don’t know what magic they possess, but there is nothing quite as euphoric as opening a box to find carefully bubble wrapped tomato plants. Gently tearing that perforation is a childhood Christmas morning on steroids. I’m in awe that these wonderful humans make my wildest dreams come true by taking delicate broccoli plants and shipping them through the most violent process.... only to arrive at my door as if I had carefully packed them in my car and talked to them the whole way home. They have a wide variety of seeds and live plants. The number one thing I’m looking forward to after this quarantine? Visiting their nursery. While it’s possible I’m just that lame, I’m fairly certain it’s just they are THAT AMAZING.I can’t thank the team at Hirts enough. I’m so looking forward to summer, thanks to your excellent service and amazing plants.
3 times I have gone there. Spent a good amount of $$ & all 3 times I have dealt with outright rude staff! NOTHING is priced so you have to ask. Almost all plants are not marked with species & care, soooo you have to ask. The prices are outrageous. Apparently, I made the mistake of too many questions, because my 3rd question was met with an extremely rude Im not doing this with you! Guess what? Im done with YOU!
WOW! We were completing a fall landscaping project and cleaned all of our local garden centers out of Japanese Blood Grass. I looked online and discovered that Hirts had some available. I was a bit leery to purchase something of that nature online, but we really wanted to check a project off of the list and not let it linger until spring. We received our plants yesterday and I just have to say again...WOW...the plants arrived in amazing condition and were 3-4 times LARGER than the plants that we had gotten from our local garden centers. The soil was nice and loose with no roots bound together. We would highly recommend Hirts and are super pleased with the experience.
I purchased a Mother-of-Thousands plant, Kalancoe, that I had been searching for years. I was delighted to find it. The plant that arrived was much larger than I expected. It was in very good condition , well packaged. The company processed the order quickly and the post office was efficient, so I received it within 3 days! I was well pleased with this experience and will most likely purchase from them again.
I have ordered before with no problem. My last order however was a patchouli plant thats is wilted and half of the leaves are yellow. I contacted them and the told me that its from shipping and the plant is fine . Well they just lost a customer for life and everyone needs to know how crappy there customer service is and they ship half dead plants. Your better off going to walmart!
I was so disappointed with the quality and the packaging of the plants I got from Hirts through the Walmart website and while I could return the plants, the shipping cost was not refundable. I’ve heard if you live nearby then you can find some nice plants in person but I’ve heard a lot of similar stories to mine when shopping online.
I dont like to germinate seeds so I ordered 4 specialty pepper plants and they arrived from Hirts Gardens several states away from me absolutely in perfect condition and arrived before I thought they would. They were really healthy, disease free and thriving with beautiful foliage for their size. I was more than pleased and I will be ordering again for various types I cant get my hands on locally.
Pretty cool, I got plants. That being said, they have no prices posted. Which is fine, I was totally cool with looking online. HOWEVER, none of the online sales apply, and some of the plants I found werent listed. Some nice plants but probably wont go here again as I feel like I got kind of screwed over.
Dont reply to emails about orders AND theres no option to cancel an order. Well see what the plants look like when I get them. Will update review when plants are received. Most likely will never order from here again. Cant stand companies who have their email address on their website but dont respond to emails! Whats the point of it even being there then?!
I was looking for an odd shrub and found it on amazon, but discovered to my delight that the nursery was 20 minutes from my house. After sending an email inquiring if they had any in stock one of the Hirts got back to me numerous times over the weekend when i thought they were closed, and had someone waiting to show them to me when i arrived, even though they were very busy shipping out orders. My tamarix looks real nice and i am very satisfied with dealing with these people. I wandered about a bit in the greenhouses, but was overwhelmed by the selection. When i have another strange item i need i will definitely go through them again.
Three stars is probably a bit generous. It is more of a shipping center than a customer-friendly retail greenhouse. Many of the plants look unhealthy and none of the prices are marked, which I found to be rather off-putting.The employees are hustling around getting plants ready for shipping and dont seem too interested in helping customers.I only purchased because they had a rare plant I couldnt get elsewhere, but I will not be going back.
I bought a house Plant/ Purple Passion received a Purple Possum . They asked for a picture . After reviewing the photo they sent me a Purple Passion .. DEAD surrounded by Weeds. I sent them another photo they a issued me a refund. I wanted to choose another type of plant , but they dont answer their Phone. I guess its just better to issue refunds than try to satisfy the customer. I will look around for another Plant Garden to buy from in future.
Never buy online from Hirts Gardens. Their customer service is horrible. As soon as a complaint is lodged, they stop responding to your attempts at contact. They did not ship all my plants and after several attempts at shipping, refused to ship or refund the remaining plants. On top of that, the plants I did receive were spindly and lacking in nutrients. Definitely shop online somewhere else.
My new favorite nursery. Excellent selection. Found six or so varieties of Ohio hardy kiwi vines, hardy ground orchids, hardy clumping bamboos, a wall of bulbs, elderberry and paw paw saplings, and much more.Generally small pots with comparably small prices.I’ve been there three times this year, planning another visit tomorrow.
Ive only ever ordered from them online. Both orders were great. The packaging and prep wasnt the best Ive ever seen, but it was decent. For the price, I dont know if theres a better place to order from. The price plus shipping usually turns out to be a little lower than my local nursery (though I do love supporting the local nurseries).I bought this Micans for example from Hirts. I cant seem to find a Micans anywhere local and most online stores have it for more expensive. Its not the most amazing looking plant, but its healthy enough and it will do great. The pot has many growing tips and Im excited to see how it looks in a few months.
I love love love HIRTS GARDENS... they have BEAUTIFUL, healthy, and unusual plants! I have been a customer for two plus years and I have never been disappointed! From shipping to delivery Hirts is the best, plus the bonus when you open your order! I buy all my plants here because you know you are getting the best of the best! 5stars and then some!
I ordered 3 Mothers Inlaw tongue plants thru JET. They came perfect.. I re-potted them and am giving them away as gifts. I ordered 3 more. I have ordered other plants from Amazon that came from Hirts. Over the last couple of years. Purple Passion plants. A Bonzai and Succulents.I Am Very, Very Impressed!!!
I purchased Black Krim Tomato plants from Hirts on Ebay. The box was not big enough to accommodate the plants the plants were too crowded in the box. I expected them to be shipped better I paid $11.75 shipping for 8 plants so I felt they should have been shipped better. I spoke the nursery I usually do business with and they also said that when shipping plants the box should be at least as big as the plants. I sent an email to Hirts about the condition of the plants they did request that I send a picture but I explained that I did not have the ability to send pictures with the computer I have. They promptly opened a cancellation request. The email that sent was about if the plants did not survive then how would we resolve the situation. Hirts was not very helpful when I was concerned about the condition of the plants which was a result of how they packaged them. The box itself was not damaged at all. This is the way they handle customer problems and/or complaints?
I would strongly suggest not buying from this supplier. They put masking tape over the top of the pots and drop the pots into the box with Styrofoam peanuts. One of the plants showed up fine about 6 tall with three sprouts coming out. The second one had rubbed against the side of the box and all but a 1 piece had broken off. When I asked them to replace the plant, they asked for a picture. According to them, the plant looked just fine. No replacement. If you have bought plants before, the price of the plant is based upon the size and maturity of the plant. These guys ripped me off and refused to replace a product that was clearly damaged during shipping. Take your money elsewhere.
Super friendly staff, and an enormous series of greenhouses stuffed with plants. Its a little hectic as employees get Internet orders filled, but we were welcomed to poke around anywhere. Beautiful plants, great selection, and decent prices. We browsed their website before visiting to get an idea of what we were buying.
Would put no stars if it was an option.Plant in general, received this as a christmas gift, took great care in transporting it through the cold to not hurt the plant. brought it in my house and found that there were nat like flies in it. Since it was a christmas gift from my mom I didnt want to tell her that I think it had an infestation so I put it in my basement for a couple of days. I went downstairs and saw that the plant looked a little dry so i watered it. I took it to work to monitor. It started to limp like it was dry but I had just watered it. I noticed that the plant leaves were wilting and where they were wilting there was white cobweb like things in them. It has been less than two months having this plant. I told my mom about the plant and sent her this picture. She had to send them a picture. The owner finally got back to her and said with proper care the plant should be fine. I hadnt even had the plant for more than two weeks before it started having problems. Its a lime and lemon mixed plant. Notice how the lemon looks fine. still looks like that, whereas the lime now looks dead. Do not buy from them, they dont have good customer service or an legitimate return policy. If you go on their facebook page they do not have a place to put reviews. there are people posting about bad experiences and they never even bother to respond.Disappointed that this is a local grower
Do not purchase from this seller over walmart! Did 2 purchase and never plan to buy from them again, all plants came in bad shape, one wasnt even shipped properly, I had to throw one out almost right from the start! I am sooo disappointed! Will NEVER purchase from them ! Both purchases not even close to the picture advertised!
Ordered 24 Burgundy Glow Ajuga plants, which arrived fine and literally thrived, spreading beautifully up until winter. After the thaw, not one sign of them. Contact Hirts and was told I was out of luck because the winter was harsh. Guess what? EVERY winter is harsh in the northern suburbs of Chicago and plants survive. I am very disappointed. They should guarantee their products. It wasnt even a full year that I had them, and other nurseries, even Home Depot, give you a one year guarantee. I can see from the review history, their customer service has gone downhill.
Do not use them. Appalling service via their website and online service. I ordered three plants to be delivered via express. On the day of delivery I was waiting at home, nothing arrived. The next day the delivery info showed that the order was being returned (incorrect address listed as the reason - this was completely false which I tripled checked). I called and emailed, only receiving a one-line reply of Pleases place a new order. The first order was refunded. Dont waste your time.
I ordered some chicks and hens as well as some other assorted succulents. The chicks and hens seemed to have done well in the trip from ohio to nevada. That was not the case with the assorted succulents. A majority of them were lifeless, and the dirt was knocked out of them. Also I paid for 2 day shipping and my live plants we conveniently delayed. This may have played a part Im not sure. I did plant them and hope I can revive them. Will probably go to a local nursery next time.
I had a phenomenal experience with Hirts Greenhouse - I had been looking for quite a few slightly trickier to find varieties of edible crops; Gooseberries, a variety of hardy kiwis, fly honeysuckle, and a lot of odds and ends. I saw Hirts had a huge selection of kiwis, and was going to place an order online when I saw theyd be shipping from ~2-3 hours away... So I decided to make a road trip instead! When I asked about their selection on Facebook, they were quick to answer my question and let me know that their entire online selection was also available to buy in person and not just from their website.Their greenhouse was HUGE - Ten houses I think! The greenhouse is clearly designed more for shipping / online order than it is for customer shopping convenience, its more likely a distribution center than your classic retail front - so keep that in mind if you stop to visit. I did have to ask a few times about prices / where things were due to this fact; But I didnt mind, because the staff was ubiquitous and everyone I encountered was friendly and quick to give me the answers I was looking for! My favorite encounter by far was when I mentioned I couldnt find the kiwis, and lovely lady who helped me said Oh, you missed AN ENTIRE GREENHOUSE! and walked me in edible plant paradise - I was impressed before, I didnt realize the place could GET any bigger! The selection is INCREDIBLE. Not only did they have everything I was looking for - They had more varieties in person than I saw listed online! They also had some plants on my wish list that HADNT been listed online, and I actually managed to find every single plant I was looking for this season! I was absolutely floored.I ended up buying WAY more than I initially intended, but because I bought so much they were very kind with their pricing, giving me a nice deal on my overflowing cart.I just cant even tell you how happy I was with the whole experience. If youre looking for edibles, Hirts Garden is well worth a drive! Of course, they had a huge selection of other items too - But the edibles are definitely what will keep me coming back!(And, by the way - I made this journey a month ago, and all of my plants are alive, happy and flourishing. I decided to wait before leaving a review in case I had issues, but I didnt - Everything has been fantastic!)
Amazing. Simply put. Its a bit of an organized chaos situation but I loved every minute of being in there. Their plants look amazing! I cant say enough about it. The people working there were very kind and knowledgeable and happy to talk to me about their plants. 10/10 will go there again!
I was sent a gift with a lavender 4 in pot Christmas tree and a Rosemary Christmas tree for my December birthday, I thought what a great gift, so I ordered the same from e bay , to be sent to my mom, we both love rosemary, BOTH OUR ROSEMARY PLANTS DIED BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!! I have a rosemary plant growing in my house in an 18 in pot doing fine! I know how to take care and grow Rosemary, feel ripped off twice!!
I ordered 3 established perennial Geraniums in 1 Gal. containers. I ordered 5 3 1/2-inch Black-eyed Susans last week. They arrived today (6/15/2017). I excitedly opened the box, but my smile quickly turned to a frown. EVERY PLANT had some brown leaves; some yellow leaves; some spotted green and spotted yellow leaves such as you see in Black Spot Fungus on Roses. I had to pick MANY leaves, in the hopes the plants might make it. Most bothersome was the fact that 2 or 3 of the Black-eyed Susan Plants actually had stems slimy from beneath the soil upward, with the leaf of the stem nothing but a rope of just more slime. Unfortunately, I tried to reach Hirts past 4:00 p.m., so I could not discuss the wretched state of the plants I received. I will be forever leery of ordering from them, as it appears they dont know how to ship healthy plants to their out-of-town consumers. Boy, did I make a mistake!!!!
I ordered a patchouli from Hirts almost exactly one year ago and it has done great. There was an error with the order originally and Hirts corrected it swiftly. The plant was about 3 inches tall when I got it and is now 3 feet tall! repotted it right away and its been thriving ever since.
The staff are always so kind when I go in there with my children. Which can be pretty boring for kids.. Plant shopping. But the staff always interacts with my children, even taking them and showing them cool plants, giving them some candy. Prices are very cheap as well. I love this place.
Im an owner of a small local boutique. I stopped in to this garden center to check it out in anticipation of using this nursery as my supplier. At first, the workers seemed very helpful & ready to answer my questions. I took my time browsing over their selections. I was incredibly disappointed when a worker turned around & irritably said, Are you ready to check out now or what? The tone of her voice was so unexpected that I walked out right then and there. As far as their plants, they do have a nice selection, but make sure you have a green thumb or know-how because many will require much treating.
My plants arrived dead, almost dead, diseased and utterly terrible. I reached out to Hirts Gardens with pictures of all of the plants. They sent me to the Amazon site to initiate a return. Really? They want these horrible plants back? Any respectable company would have IMMEDIATELY generated a refund. Period. Message me and I will gladly share pics for all to see!
Longtime customer of hirts and have been a purchaser ever since I discovered this nursery was nearby me. As they do most of their sales online shopping in store is not the easiest (prices may not be labeled) but as others may have mentioned, staff are always super helpful to show you around or help with any questions. Hirts has been my go to source for houseplants for sometime.
Ordered Canna bulbs and asked to hold my order for a week or so and ship when cold weather ends. HG ignored my request by saying due to ebay rules he must ship immediately and assured he will send my order with heat packs. I asked again to hold on but HG shipped at once. We have record cold in the North East this February. I found box with my order at front door in the cold. Bulbs were solid frozen. There were no heat packs inside the box. To all this HG suggested to plant rhizomes and if it does not grow he will replace or refund. Yep?! When?I live in zone 7 and earliest I could plant is mid-April (maybe) and this is when HG return policy is 14 days!!! To be true those bulbs even not worth a try and doesnt look to a quality product: all imported outside US. I bet I could find better ones at Homedepot or Lowes, and at more affordable price + service.
I have bought so many plants online from Hirts garden and all of them came in great condition. I got a monstera from hirts about a year ago and it has been doing exceptional well. Other purchases are peperomia and rubber plants. They have all been thriving in my house.
I was leery about ordering based on the reviews, but my experience could not have been better. My two peace lilies were very reasonably priced and my order was processed and arrived quickly. I ordered them on Monday using standard shipping and received them on Thursday in great condition.
I LOVE Hirts. Ordering plants online from Hirts is as close as we can come to an absolute sure thing in the gardening world.I have never had a plant fail to thrive - across most of a decade now, across plant genres, across multiple zones, and even done in containers and transported in pickups. They come well packaged and in excellent condition, always.I have periodically wished there was more selection in fruits, but I tend to remind myself that the quality likely comes from a willingness to focus and an UN willingness to spread themselves too thin to manage growers for everything under the sun.-THEN they impressed me even more. This year, I sent a thank you. I sent it on a Sunday morning, and Sunday evening, already had TWO real-person replies, from Hirt-Hirts themselves.Coming into a busy season, for them to take the time - right then - and to take it themselves, just locks it in 100% - I will always order from Hirts.-Thank you, Hirts Gardens!
BUYER BEWARE!!! Received the plant poorly packed with more dirt in the box than the pot. They did not secure the plants ago they rolled around and were crushed also the plant was infeeted with spider mites and after talking with another former customer also learned that she received a plant with pests as well. When I contacted them they did not respond. I do not recommend them for any of your plant needs.
Ordered a hop plant expecting a first year started potted hop plant. Instead they sent me a dead rhizome - essentially a stick. It appeared the rhizome hadnt been watered in a while, it, and the soil it was shipped in, were bone dry. I wont order from this company again.
I couldnt be happier with Hirts. They shipped me a live plant to Minnesota where temperatures are below freezing. I didnt know how they planned on getting it here alive but I ordered it anyway. It was delivered USPS. My mailman delivered it to the doorstep in 20 degree weather when I wasnt home. It was left on the doorstep at least an hour, so no doubt, the plant was frost bit. I notified Hirts of the problem. They refunded the cost of the plant AND the shipping. I will definitely order again from them but wait until temps are more mild. Thank you Hirts. : D
I had the opportunity to visit their greenhouse and it was wonderful! There was an amazing selection of houseplants and succulents, including ones that are hard to find elsewhere. Their staff was also very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Overall, I definitely recommend them and look forward to visiting them again!
Hirts are horrible to deal with. I brought two tree peony at April 27 through their website, got an email for shipment at April 28, and then April 29 received another Email with a partial refund. So I did content them to find out what s going on, Matt Hirts got back to me said one of the plant is damaged so they give me a partial refund.at April 30, today s morning and I received the package for my tree peony, after I opened it, one little dead plant is set in the box. I told two pictures of the poor thing and email to Hirts, and I want me refund back, Matt Hirts got back to me said: The plant is healthy, plant it after the first frosts. THEY REFUSED TO REFUND THE MONEY......I have grown tree peony for 8 years. I have about 20 different varieties that I collected. Im not new to tree peony, clearly the graft of this tree peony is dead.I sent this poor thing back and put a dispute with my PayPal.Everything had been done under their 15 days return policy, I want to see what kind of excuses they have this time.
I ordered 1500 lady bugs from Hirts...and I am EXTREMELY pleased. The package arrived 2 days before it was even supposed to be here..and it contained full instructions along with Lady Bug Nectar. I couldnt ask for better service. I could have paid double the price at a local nursery, but I would have gotten only 500 ladybugs. It was well worth the 3 day wait...Hirts is where I will buy my supplies from this point on...
Plants arrived dead. not sure if the honeysuckle vine I ordered even had leaves before it was shipped. Very disappointed and unable to find anyway to contact them. Apparently customer service is dead with this greenhouse. And I wont be ordering from them again. Just like throwing your money away...
Horrible online customer service and rude phone customer service. Placed online order for 2 pots. Got a one line response....pots chipped sorry. When I asked for clarification the response was..order shipped, please refuse so we can refund. Again I asked for clarification. I was wondering g why you would ship damaged pots. One line response again...order refunded with no explanation. I called customer service and was polite...introduced myself and started by giving them my order number. The lady on the phone cut my off abruptly and quite rude by saying, no just tell me what the problem is. Never doing business with them again. Check BBB you will see they got a F rating.
Took the kids with me to get a curly spider plant. The workers were friendly and spent time showing us around. They showed the kids some live lady bugs that were getting ready to ship. It was nice to check out all the plants and for the kids to get out in the winter.
Product was Ok - but inventory tracking leaves a lot to be desired. Bought 6 dormant Boston Ivy 4 did not make it. No issues Hirts said they had nor more and would refund the costs - no biggie, they said reorder when they show up on the web. They showed up and I reordered got my receipt and then.....crickets, as in nothing no contact. Called them and they said there had been a mistake and they had none in stock at the time I had reordered BUT they had them NOW so I placed another order......crickets again......called yesterday ooppps another inventory mistake they did not have them. Can not recommend this company.
Recently ordered some amaryllis bulbs, while some were okay, others were clearly damaged. Hirts offered to replace the damaged bulb and then just sent me back the same damaged bulb and said it was a healthy bulb even though it clearly had been sliced off the bottom. Buyer beware.
Worst Customer Service Ever! The Venus Flytrap they advertised was 5 times larger than the one they shipped to me.Then it died in 3 weeks. When I asked for another plant they told me their policy was that I had to contact them within 2 weeks. when I asked them to show me where that was - they could not. They would not refund my money or send me another plant.
I purchased a plant through Amazon and it was HORRIBLE!!!Very yellow, drooping, poorly packaged, and Hirts REFUSED to resolve the issue after receiving photos of the poor plant. What I received was NOT what was decsribed on the Amazon page. I am now filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and the Dept of Conusumer Affairs. All I wanted was a healthy plant just as thry advertised. very poor business choice!
I had seen a few bad reviews for Hirts Gardens so I went there expecting a somewhat negative experience. That couldnt have been further from what occurred! I was greeted at the door by an extremely pleasant woman who offered to assist me. I declined her offer because I wanted to look around. In short order I found myself in a labyrinth of greenhouses and decided to make my way back to the front and see if the offer was still good. 🤔 When I approached the same lady she didnt look surprised to see me.🙄 Within ten minutes she had assisted me in finding the twenty or so plants I had found on their website plus a few I saw that I hadnt realized I needed! 🤣 I would highly recommend Hirts!
Well im not very pleased, ordered a venus fly trap and a sundew. Every trap has damage except for one ..the cup it came with is broke, the way they wrapped it (which i completely understand) to keep it moist with some sort of saran wrap...they could have done a better job wrapping it..like i said 7 traps all but one are damaged...the sundew.........honestly I dont even know if its alive..it just looks horrible.. not worth over 30,00
Worst company ever. Pure frauds. Sent dead, plant. They do not respind to email nor answer their phone.Buy from a garden center, where you can see a plant yiu are buyingPure fraud. They take your money send a dead plant and do not respondWill be filing formal complaint with United States Post Oiffice Postal Inspectors for interstste fraud .STAY AWAY
The communication with these people is poor. You call the 800# or the 330 # and you either get a fax tone or a voice mail, which they do not return the call. They left an item off my order and wrote on the packing slip that it would ship within 14 days, that was 45 days ago ! I did speak to a woman 2 times who promised that I would get my missing item and I never did !
Do not order online I was looking for specific carnivorous houseplants looked great online they do say its a small 3 pot, .However I live fairly close and made the drive the carnivorous plants were half dead or out of stock one species was ok but small hoping it takes off ...that section looked like it hasnt been attended too at all the online plants look beautiful...but most they didnt have I found 3 iffy ones bought only because no one else sells them... again for carnivorous houseplants do NOT buy online...their other plants looked beautiful..and the worker did give me one free it was in such poor condition... Im sticking with Petittes plant center beautiful large carnivorous pitcher plants. Have bought 2 and they are doing well!
Rip-off!!! Ordered 2 items. Said 1 not available. Tried to cancel order. Sorry, order already sent(early the next morning)? Remaining item not 4 pk as described, instead 1 large plant which I cant use. Legitimate companies provide return labels. Return the 1 large plant at my expense? Chances of plant surviving return trip unlikely. Rip-off from the start. Rip-off!!! Rip-off!!! Rip-off!!! It hurts doing business with Hirts.
Not only wouldnt they answer their phone, they went out of their way to avoid it. 1st time I called, they let it ring 2 minutes after which it went silent. 2nd time I called, it disconnected after the 2nd ring. 3rd time I called, they gave me fax tones. 4th time I called, they let it ring 2 minutes before disconnecting again. I guess they have so much business, they dont need mine.

2022-06-04They do most of their sales online. You will feel like you shouldnt be in there because of this but you are welcome to wander the many greenhouses to shop. Most plants arent labeled with names or prices. Bring your plant app or ask one of the friendly staff members. One of the healthiest plant locations I have visited. Didnt see a single pest.prices are all very reasonable and they have a decent amount of rare plants as well. We will be returning.

2022-06-16This review is for an online order. Warning, if you want decent plants or decent customer service, do not order from here. I received dry plants that were fried and tiny plants that were not at all rooted into the container. This means I will have to baby them and keep them in this tiny pot for months. When I contacted customer service, Matt was not helpful and only did the bare minimum, refunding me for only 2 plants out of 6. This is was supposed to be a good experience not a stressful one

2022-01-05I just Google maps searched this place to give it a glowing review. I cant recommend Hirts enough, specifically their online ordering. I live in NYC and, while I want to support local businesses as much as I can, houseplants are just absolutely outrageous here. The independent stores are too small to charge anything close to reasonable. Thats why I love ordering online through Hirts. I know its a family business and with each order I am more and more thrilled. Plants are carefully packaged (with love) and always arrive alive and vibrant. I have never felt a description was off. They have tags with descriptions. Finally, despite distance orders seem to arrive extremely fast and use USPS instead of overpriced services. If youre in a city and cant get a small Peperomia for under ten bucks, Hirts is the place to go!

2022-02-24Ive been ordering from them for a couple months had about 2-3 orders already. I typically order the small starter plants, I like to watch them grow from babys. I have not had an issue, every order Ive placed has gotten her in a timed matter, always in good shape, and still alive. The only issue, wat when I messaged to see the time frame I would receive my package because it wasnt started with my first order the guy was kind of short with me but I got them in 3-5 days so I dont care. Im buying the plants, as long as I get what I paid for Im happy.

2022-02-16Shipping is great. Ordering in the winter is new for me. The heating bag kept my plants beautiful. They really advertise and send you rear, colorful or green plants just like the photo. Thank you so much. Money well spent!

2022-04-25I got my two plants and was excited till I opened the box. Both plants were packed good but my plants were in pieces! For what I paid for them I would think they would have put a fragile sticker on it. On the bright side, theyre healthy. I have tried for 3 days to contact them and then it goes to what sounds like a fax machine. I have emailed the address on their site and no contact back what so ever. Customer service is non existent. For $37 for 2, 2 plants you would think they would respond. All I can say is STAY AWAY from this company and take youre business somewhere else that they have pride in their company.

2022-05-07We visited the local nursery. They do have really good varieties of tropical plants. We bought some rare tropical plants like Indian and Thai hot peepers, Arabian Jasmine, Night Blooming Jasmine, Elephant Ear Plants etc. So lucky to have such a wonderful nursery in our location. Staffs were very helpful. Thank you!

2022-04-14I would prefer to have rated them with no stars. My first and last time ordering from them. I paid over $15 for what was advertised as a beautiful magenta colored clematis. You can see why I was thoroughly disappointed when it comes looking like a very pathetic little weed. And if that wasnt bad enough they refused to issue arefund for the order . BEWARE ordering anything from this website.

2022-03-27I ordered through Walmart.com, Hirts filled the order, I was so impressed with the quality and packaging of my strawberry root plants, I wish I would have found them sooner! Best plants I have ever bought online! Thank you so much! I will definitely use them in the future! Great plants, properly shipped and handled! Thank you!!!
