Giovannis in other cities:
The food, service, setting, and drinks are exquisite. The restaurant is well run and there are more than enough waiters/waitresses to tend to your party. Absolutely consider this place for any special occasion. Its hard to notice from the outside, but on the inside its a night you wont forget.
If you don’t want to be disappointed DO NOT ORDER VEAL PARMESAN. Taste and meat smell was bad. Had to turn it back after few bites. After I went to read reviews for this restaurant I saw that I was not the only one to being disappointed by the same Veal Parmesan. One star for the atmosphere.
Exceptional service here and delicious food. I was disappointed in the soup I ordered. It was cream of mushroom and I assumed it would have mushrooms in it, but I was wrong. Everything else was more than satisfactory. These dishes were delicious lobster salad and veal scalopini
Sorry, Giovannis is over-rated, and not especially flavorful. My pasta was way over cooked. The wine list is not as distinguished as another reviewer suggested. The service is very good though and they quickly replaced my capellini. Still, its expensive for what you get.
My lone criticism is that the menu could feature more straightforward vegetarian options. However, the food was fantastic, the ambiance exceptional and the SERVICE was maybe the best Ive ever experienced. This should be in your Cleveland top 5 that you surprise people with for special occasions.
We went to Giovannis for the first time and it was excellent. Unfortunately we became full too fast and couldnt try enough things. We had the Oysters Rockefeller and a shrimp gnocchi special and both were incredible. We also had the cheesecake with berry sorbet which was wonderful. The bartender was really nice, attentive and helpful with suggestions. We will definitely be going back soon to try more things.
Giovanni’s knows how to deliver the total experience. The patio atmosphere was just lovely. The service was attentive and the food is legendary. Our party of 8 enjoyed a wonderful evening. My veal picatta was delicious. The potato cake side was so yummy. We will definitely be back.
Had the veal parmesan. Did not like it. The meat had a sour taste to it. Only had about 4 bites out of it. They asked if I wanted something else. There was nothing really to pick from, as I dont like seafood. So I said no. Well guess what? I was stilled charged for the whole plate of food! $50.00 Im out of...really? Ive never been to a place that charged you for the food you didnt eat! I could see if I ate over half. 4 small bites and charged $50.00!!
The food was very, very good. 👍 The service from Sarah was beautiful, she was very accommodating, friendly and extraordinary helpful with our menu selections. My main critic is concerning that outside seating. It was a spot bit chilly outside in September, but the restaurante was not equipped with patio heaters or any firepits for comfort. It really detracted from the enjoyment of our meal.My other issue was the noticeable lack of social distancing protocols. The wait time for the food items was also a bit tardy. Maybe the fact that we were outside made the wait for our menu selections seem a bit longer than normal. Staffing during Covid-19 may have also played a part, our waitress Sarah looked like she was working extremely hard, taking care of quite a few patrons.I chose Giovannis because I was celebrating my birthday and my retirement after 40 years of service from the VA Medical Center, and I was hosting my 78y/o mother and 5 other family members and we all shivered through dinner. We stayed because everyone knew that I had been promising myself a visit to Giovannis since I arrived in Cleveland in 1981. I finally made it🙏I would recommend a visit! I enjoyed the menu choices and the craft cocktails. I plan to visit again, only I will be !Since its all about that food.....We enjoyed ourselves inspite of the stated issues. The drinks and the food were all very good, very pricey, but very delicious and well presented. I highly recommend the clam chowder!#selfappointedambassadorofCleveland#celebratelife#celebratelove#celebrateperiod#Clevelandfoodie
In spite of the Corona virus going on and with restaurants being closed or having delivery and pickup, being here yesterday was an exquisite and beautiful experience . The service was awesome, the servers were attentive and on top of everything. We didnt have to wait long and they were more than happy to serve. Definitely a 5+ rating and no complaints. Service to Perfection and highly highly recommended for sure .
This is the third Italian restaurant I have visited since I moved to Cleveland and is my absolute favorite so far. The food was delicious and the spicy dishes were actually spicy. Everything I tried had huge flavors but was very well balanced. While the server was generally attentive, I felt like the service didnt have the high-end polish I would expect for a high-end place. A little bit more training for their service staff would go a long way. The issue wasnt enough to detract from an amazing dinner.
As our first time there, we didnt know what to order, but the waiter was immensely helpful in detailing the menu, multiple times, and giving us plenty of time. We may have spent 30-45 minutes trying to determine what to order, which apparently was no problem. He definitely made two young college kids feel really comfortable in a more upscale restaurant. The service was great, and the food really awesome too. Not something that made me think I had never eaten real food, but definitely something to write home about. 10/12/2011
This is one of the best places to eat in all of Cleveland. The meat is always prepared to perfection whether you want it medium rare or well done, its always extremely tasty. The Minestrone and Wedding Soup are the best Ive had. The wine list is quite extensive and the bartenders know how to make just about anything you can think of. its never loud so its perfect for talking in a normal tone and the staff is top notch.
Great steak house in Cleveland, actually I would put it as one of my top 3. Its your typical fancy high end steak house and the service is 5 stars. The food is delicious and every time I have gotten a steak here it was perfectly cooked to medium rare perfection. I dont see any downsides to this place aside from the fact that its a bit expensive but thats on par with the quality of food and service you will receive here.
I recall dining at Giovannis years ago when the atmosphere was quieter and attention was given to every detail - waiters with white towels draped over their arm waiting for your every need. This year two of my long-time friends decided to revisit the restaurant for our annual Christmas dinner. Its all about the details, but the food has to be worthy also. The waiter was attentive and pleasant. My friends drink was returned before consuming as she found a lipstick mark on the glass. The drink the second time around was not prepared as requested, missing a critical addition. My friends appetizers of lobster bisque and the prosciutto/grapefruit salad met their approval. The oysters Rockefeller appetizer I had was average...I could do a better job myself. My salmon entree was awful - overcooked, fishy, farmed salmon was accompanied by greasy, under cooked potatoes. The dish was returned.I would not recommend Giovannis. At the price point across the menu, you should expect excellent food, service and clean dinnerware every time.
When you want the very best food on the east side you come here. Period. The service is arguably the best in Cleveland comparable to what you would find in a Michelin starred restaurant. The atmosphere is perfect for unwinding after a long day. When it comes to the drinks whatever it is you want the bar tenders will make it to perfection. Try the cavatelli and you will not be disappointed homemade noodles and sauce will set the bar very high for what good pasta is. You can go to Milan but the pasta isnt as good at the end of the day.
While we were there celebrating my late sisters life, God rest her soul; we enjoyed a meal for the ages! Baked Calamari was superbly prepared and it was so good, that this blue collar guy couldnt believe it was entering my body! Lol. Its very expensive from my point of view, but worth every gilded penny!! Special occasions, or if you want to just spoil yourself, this is the place for you.
I dont usually like gnocchi but Giovannis was excellent. My shrimp was cooked perfectly, and both my husbands and my portions were large. Excellent wine selection. The carrot cake dessert was pretty amazing. I felt underdressed in jeans so I would recommend business-casual clothing. I meant to take a picture of the dessert, but we gobbled it down too quickly!
Great experience. Friendly service from bar and all staff. Delicious meals and surprisingly generous portions for an upscale location. Best of all, Executive Chef Zach Lander was extremely accommodating to my dietary restrictions and created a vegan salad and entree course just for me upon request. He prepared a creamy and delightful vegan risotto with marcona almonds. Usually, if I want plant based food at a restaurant that doesnt have it on the menu, Im met with annoyance and some pasta with olive oil and broccoli at best. Will definitely go back. My only suggestion is that they put the vegan risotto on the regular menu. It is definitely worthy of the spot!
First off, this restaurant appears to be in a small business park or general office building, so its an odd location, but has valet parking. I already knew it was going to be the fancier type of Italian restaurant, but you can see theyre trying very hard with their decor to classy the place up with their given space. Most of the other people in the restaurant were dressed in suits (or dress shirts) or dresses/skirts, so I assume and hope they were celebrating something (like an anniversary). Otherwise, this place would be too pretentious. We ordered the ceviche, which was tiny and pricey, but still decent. I had never had gnocchi before (Im more of an Old Spaghetti Factory or Buca di beppo - look it up- kind of person), so I thought Id try it here for the first time. Also, it was because I didnt see anything else I really liked on the limited menu. I was hoping for some ravioli or lasagna type foods, but this place is too fancy and high class to have those. If they do have anything like that, maybe Im just too ignorant and dont know Italian well enough to be able to tell which ones are.The closest thing to lasagna here is probably the pappardelle, which I tried, but wasnt a fan of. Im big on sauce (and cheese), so I felt like everything I ate was lacking in sauce and very dry. Also, there was not enough cheese... The desserts are tasty and as expected. Nothing that special. I wouldnt recommend coming here unless you live nearby and want an excuse to blow a ton of money on food to feel fancy. Even if youre here for an anniversary or romantic date, youre not going to get a lot of privacy or an intimate setting. I also suggest ordering from their special menu because those items appeared to taste and be cooked better. There was a huge wedding reception group (older couples) that came in towards the middle of our meal. They were seated in a circular table in the middle of the room, and basically the entire room was focused on them because of how loud and raucous they were. Hopefully, that doesnt happen to you, but it provided some interesting entertainment.
Dined here on Valentines Day. The service was the worst I have ever experienced. The server, Jackie, was short of rolling her eyes at us. I do not know why.We were seated at the bar lounge and not the dining room. I asked why and Jackie rudely barked that when I made reservation I did not specify I wanted to be in the dining room. I guess I should have specified. We tried to order appetizers, she would not take our order because she wanted to come back and take the whole order at one time. My husband ordered filet medium-well, repeating himself 3 times, she still brought medium-rare.Aside from having the worst dining experience ever, the food was sub-par.As we were exiting the hostess was laughing at the manager, Pier, with the coat check person. How inappropriate.I cannot believe a server would allow herself to be SO rude to guests. The attitude was unbelievable.
WOW, and I mean wow was my experience here perfect. Every aspect of the atmosphere, decor and service right down to bussing was on point. We were seated promptly but the restaurant wasnt all that crowded when we arrived at 8:00PM on a Thursday night. Dress code is definitely business casual/formal and includes a trendier/modern bar/wine cellar/lounge and business dining section. This restaurant is very ethnic Italian in theme and the owner went out of his way to make sure that everything was taken care of at our table. The menu here is beyond diverse and creative. In fact, I was rather impressed by the menu itself as many of the items appealed to me and featured highly unique choices. I ordered the Seared Verlasso Salmon (fennel, spinach, grapes, white beans, mustard-lemon broth) of which was aesthetically delightful! The way that this dish was crafted blew my mind for a restaurant outside of Cleveland. A+ Taste was fresh, flavorful and featured quality ingredients. I would recommend this restaurant for family gatherings and business meetings more specifically. Its also the perfect location for an anniversary dinner or date night. I received a very intimate vibe from this location and was made to feel as if I were at home. My experience here was very refreshing and I left feeling highly satisfied.
One of the best meals that I had at a restaurant! The meal was lamb ragu and paperdelle with mixed veggies. It was filling but ate it all because it was so o delicious. The service was great with good recommendation on the wine. Tiramisu was dense, filling and superb. Great experience!
After having looked forward to a great evening, the reception was quite unwelcoming, while having to dodge other tables in close quarters combat to acquire a roll, and water. Although it has not been our first visit, it shall be our last. Kudos to the maitre d / server who was outstanding. Pierres knowledge of our extensive wine selection was superb. Upon exiting, or during your stay, please avoid the grotesque womens restroom facilities. As instructed by the hostess, there are no restrooms inside this 5 star restaurant, and were instructed to use these filthy, non attended, not cleaned, buildings public bathroom. One cannot claim to be a 5 star restaurant with facilities of such poor condition, and poor cleanliness. It can only make one wonder the cleanliness of the entire facility. The poor response regarding cleanliness from the hostess, makes one not want to return.
We have loved this place for years. It has had its ups and downs, but now it is really up! The food is creative, the staff is always attentive, and the dining experience is surely one of the best in Cleveland. If you havent been there for a while, try it again. It is superb.
Probably one of the best Italian restaurant s in Cleveland. This the type of place that you take a date to, one where the waiters clean the table after every course and you have like 2-3 waiters per table. Their food is delicious and the service is out of this world. Now obviously it is expensive but what would you expect from a high class Italian restaurant?
We came to the area on business from the west coast, and had dinner for 4 last night. The roast pork chop was excellent, but the cioppino was very poor. The seafood was over-cooked, and the sauce was bland and flavorless. I usually love cioppino, but I was extremely disappointed. And considering the price, it was even more of a disappointment.
Giovanni’s has reinvented itself. It’s always been the place on the CLE East Side to celebrate special occasions. The service was known to be at another level. And the food was top shelf. But the restaurant itself was stuffy and is still expensive. However, at some point, formal became overkill, and casual became required. And that day made me happy, and resulted in changes at Giovanni’s.You can still go to the formal dining room, but don’t do that. Get to the bar. The price is right there. It’s got it’s own menu and it’s the best way to enjoy Giovanni’s. Try the veal parm, pounded out and delicious, with pasta. or the skirt steak, that comes with a salad and fries. The mussels app is also delicious.Take a date there. He or she will be impressed, and you’ll have a quiet place to talk.
20 of us had dinner last evening,September 27, 2013. We had a private room and were served cocktails, appetizers and then dinner. The staff, headed by Pierre, could not be more attentave. The food, service and ambiance was excellant. All of our group was delighted. It was truly a great evening. Thank you Giovannis.
Called regarding dress code and was rudely asked what I was wearing. When I said jeans, shirt and shoes, she said I could eat in the bar. Not sure why jeans are unacceptable especially if I was wearing a nice blouse and shoes - my money spends the same. It wouldnt have been so reprehensible if she wasnt so rude and pretentious.
The longest wait I have ever experienced espically when the restaurant wasn’t busy at all also got treated different than the other few occupied tables no one came over and asked how our food was but the other tables did and I think that’s it because my professional black friend was there and that is totally wrong and we waited over 2 hours for our food that is non sense never again will I return
FANTASTIC DINNER WITH MY WIFE AT GIOVANNI’S - THE WHITE TRUFFLE RISOTTO WAS OUTSTANDING, THE FRESH BURATTA SALAD WITH FRESH TOMATOES AND A DRIZZLE OF BALSAMIC REDUCTION AND EVOO WERE SPECTACULAR, THE HOUSE SMOKED SALMON AND SALMON TARTARE WERE ALSO OUTSTANDING. DEFINITELY A FIVE STAR EXPERIENCE. FIT FOR FOODIES, AND IF GIOVANNI’S HAS THE INGREDIENTS TO MAKE SOMETHING PIERLUIGI THE MAITRE D’ RESTAURANT AND ZACH LADNER THE EXECUTIVE CHEF WILL MAKE THE DISH FOR YOU. YOU DON’T FIND THE TYPE OF SERVICE AND FOOD QUALITY THAT YOU GET AT GIOVANNI’S AT MANY PLACES THESE DAYS. THE FOOD HERE CAN COMPARE TO THE BEST THAT NEW YORK, BOSTON, LONDON, ZÜRICH, PARIS, AND OTHER MAJOR CITIES IN THE WORLD HAVE TO OFFER. THE WINE LIST IS EXEMPLARY, AND IF YOU DON’T SEE THE WINE YOU WANT ON THE LIST, ASK PIERLUIGI IF HE HAS SOMETHING COMPARABLE OR WHETHER HE HAS SOMETHING IN THE PRIVATE CELLAR HE CAN OFFER YOU. FANTASTIC SERVICE, EXCELLENT FOOD. JOE IS OUR FAVORITE SERVER AND TARE IS AN EXEMPLARY FOOD RUNNER AND ALL AROUND DINING ROOM ASSISTANT. OUTSTANDING!!

2022-06-25Went for dinner for first time after hearing rave reviews. Ambiance great although hidden inside office building with no sign outside. Service very attentive and seafood was fresh and bread tasty. However food was not good. We had large party and most of us did not finish our dinner. We ordered endive salad which was over powered by vinegrette, fish dishes and seafood pasta, Priced very high-average dish was $45 for entree so left feeling like dinner was not worth it. Cook at home and get a good recipe online. This is not traditional italian cuisine.

2022-04-02Overpriced for the quality of the meal. Shrimp was tough and overcooked. Tasted like rubber. They don’t serve any chicken on weekends, so no chicken parm or chicken Alfredo. Slim pickings for someone with a seafood allergy. Will not return. Gave 1 star only for the waiter he was nice.

2021-06-25For a restaurant that has been around for decades, it is amazing the quality of service and food never change. We enjoyed a visit to the patio and had a truly perfect experience. The homemade cavatelli are to die for and the bologonese was well suited with it. The sommelier chose the perfect wine to pair!
