Was really awesome food, but as of late getting it is more trouble than its worth. Called In an order and was told it will be done in an hour and a half, come to the store by the time given and food Id made yet and there isnt anyone there until the fire team comes in and I wait for the fire fighters to get their food before they started mine 2 hours for a sandwich... Last time I called for an order I was put on hold for 17 minutes while I herd casual casual conversation and a baby crying.. place needs to fix its self soon, really loved this place
Visited a few days ago, as I havent stopped in for a while. Was surprised to see prices have gone up which is no big deal prices have gone up everywhere and on everything so I expected it to come sooner than later. What really hurts is the young lady with the braces that made by food really skimped on everything. Alot less meat on my sandwiches. I dont mind paying more but dont give me less in return. Doubt ill be back unless they bring back the old portions.. Just lost a faithful almost daily customer.
Local, family owned, and operated little deli with BIG flavor. If you like a good cuban sandwich then what are you waiting for? All of the other food I have tried has been amazing as well. Including, but not limited to any of the burgers they offer. Even the cabbage rolls are amazing. They also offer a great selection of authentic German sausages, and beer.
I mean. Yall. These are the best deli sandwiches Ive ever had. I went basic the first time with a standard club on wheat and it was amazing. So I figured I would try the Prego Melt to see if they were more than just a one trick pony. The Prego Melt was phenomenal. They cut all your meat right as you order and theres a good selection of pops, chips, alcohol, and candy. Anytime Im in the area, Ill be stopping in.
We order Charlies about once a week, its usually pretty good. We ordered yesterday and they messed the whole order up. We ordered 3 sandwiches and the forgot to give us 1, the mushroom swiss burger. Once we went back to get the mushroom swiss burger, got home and it didnt have mushrooms on it. The other 2 we ordered were cheese steak, they didnt have any onions and peppers on them. When I called back to talk to the manager, she said that she thought I asked for no mushrooms on the mushroom swiss. Lol. Then she said well we can give you some onions and peppers if you come back up to the store. All I wanted was the orders re-made correctly and she wouldnt. I was very dissatisfied with this visit.
Dropped in for lunch just on a drive-by....WOW! Grandma makes the soups, family behind the counter, amazing innovative and traditional sandwiches, I think my heart stopped 3 times looking at the pictures of the burgers. Cant wait to come back and try The BossBread comes from Evans Bakery down the street, this is what a neighborhood deli should be. Everyone should have one thats walking distance. Stop in, start at the top of the menu (top left) and you will not be sorry.
It is a friendly place. Went there for the first time in Friday to try out some sandwiches. We got the boss and cowboy. The boss was a good sandwich but u wouldnt order it if you dont like coleslaw . The cowboy us too sweet for my taste. Next time I go there I will try none sweet sandwiches. For now Ill give 3 stars but if the sandwich is better the next time Ill bump it up to 4 or 5
Charlie’s Imports is a spot with big nostalgia for me. When I was little we only called it “The German Store”. My Mom would ask my Dad to stop by there on his way home from work to get her German bread and chocolates and goods. Charlie’s has a deli in the front with sodas and candy, sandwiches and more. The back hosts a large variety of German imported items from candy to beer, bread, sauce mixes, tea and more. Definitely worth a visit
Great food! Ive been going to this deli for 30 years and have always been happy with my purchase.... I have tried different sandwiches over the years, and each one has been very good, but the black forest, and Cuban are my go to sandwiches! I highly recommend this awesome Dayton deli to anyone looking for a great sandwich, soup, or just a few different deli meats to take home and make your own. Thanks again to the entire staff at one of my favorite places to eat!!
I was expecting great things after reading the 5 star reviews, but...was disappointed. The $4.50 hot dog was a good hot dog. But no better than I’d make at home. The black bean soup was a major disappointment, it was if a can of beans was opened, diced onions were added and then it was microwaved. In fact, it appeared that all the soups were cold and put in the microwave to warm up. Service was slow and chaotic. Won’t return.
This deli recently changed its owner or sold to another owner, used to be a great deli to go into and have lunch. The new owners don’t seem to care about the customers they have right in front of them. They jump to the customers who have called in orders or ordered door dash, the old owners was friendly made easy conversation and cared about the customers, I used to eat here 3-4 times a week for lunch, now I won’t be going back, not to mention the food wasn’t nearly as good as it used to be. I would of rather this place shut down then turn into the place it’s becoming. 2 months ago I would of gave 6 stars!
Visiting from Columbus and just googled “Dayton sandwich shop.” What an absolute pleasure! The staff was friendly and welcoming and answered all of my silly questions with a smile. I got the Charlie Special, which is a fantastic classic sandwich with quality ingredients. Any time we are in town I will be making a stop to Charlie’s!
Coming from the West Coast I was surrounded by family run delis. I hhadnt had much luck finding any out here untill I stumbled across this place. Dont let the front fool you- while it make take a few mins if yoyd like a hot sandwich, just call ahead. They are worth every minute of the wait. Chris makes you feel welcome and like family. They have so many options on the menu theres no way you cant find a favorite- BUT they will make you anything you want if they have the ingredients. Top it off with great prices, you cant go wrong- UNLESS you dont go. So what are you waiting for?
Best little deli on the planet. Been going there since the early 80s. Nobody makes better macaroni salad (or anything else). The eating area in the middle of the foreign food section makes for a great atmosphere. They have a nice imported beer selection too. I was sort of sorry to see the original owner retire, but being retired myself, I can only hope hes enjoying it. He deserves it.
Nothing but good memorys of this place from my childhood. My father ( JEFF UHRIG SR)use to take me there almost every other day with either 25 or fifty cents for penny candy, but i always walked out with at least a dollar or two thats only because my cousin tracy worked there and she allway it up.Good people, good food, good German liquor and 🍺And of course the penny candy..Jeff Jr
Awesome sammichs! Huge portions, cheap prices. The dude that owns the place and the girl that work the counter are very friendly. Ive been going there a few times a month for the past 2 or 3 months and get a different sammich every time, I havent been disappointed yet. And the German potato salad is off the hook good! You owe it to yourself to stop in and try it. I guarantee you will not be disappointed!
Try Charlies Deli at 429 Troy Street in Dayton, Ohio. The sandwiches are worth the trip. Small store front with a Deli in the back plus a dining area. A very unlikely place with great food. Large variety of made to order sandwiches hot, fresh & delicious. Best BLT sandwiches around. Theyre very generous with the meat. Excellent Yipee-Ki-Yay Beef, Swiss Cheese, Mushrooms, Horseradish sauce! Ask for extra hot if you want a kick. The Corned Beef Ruben melts in your mouth. No kidding. Order your sandwiches the way you want them. You can call your order in for pick up, or you can order at the Deli. $$$ runs from $5.00-$10.00 depending what you order & what you add to your order. Very friendly and accommodating staff to serve you. Lots of folks in and out buying hot sandwiches and other foods. A great German Mom & Pop eatery. Please support our local businesses. A great find in Dayton, Ohio near Childrens Medical Center.
Charlies Deli is an absolutely incredible place for a good bite to eat. While service isnt as fast as a fast food restaurant, you dont feel like you are waiting forever. However, you dont come to Charlies for the prompt service, you come for the food. And with all of the choices of sandwiches, there is something there for everyone. Their food tastes delicious and at a price that is hard to argue with. The staff is incredibly friendly and love talking and getting to know their customers. This is a must go if you are in the area. The only downside is they are only open during work hours during the weekday and not at all on weekends, so I take every opportunity for Charlies when I can.
Been here many times for lunch. Great food! Nice staff. Owner works the front lines and will chat you up as you move through. Lines are long but they move fast. A few tables in the back if you want to eat in. A lot to see in a tiny place. Parking lot is small and the aisles are narrow. But it brings in a steady crowd of happy customers.
Probably THE Best Deli in Dayton, this deli is run by a skeleton crew and usually has a long line at lunch time. I first went to the deli by accident and was so blown away, Its become a lunch time staple of mine for a while. The sandwiches are really inexpensive, but the flavors are amazing. Some of the combinations are really surprising. Try the Dalton if you want something different, or the 2-lb sandwich if youre hungry. I like adding an egg or changing up the mustard or horseradish from time to time. I know that every time, the food is going to be good! If youre looking for a new place or a good sandwich go here!
Dont let the area fool ya! This deli has been around forever, and if you dont know about it- youre seriously missing out! This deli provides the largest option and best tasting subs/ sandwiches around. From something simple like a turkey on white to an extravagant sub made up by the owners. But they are all great! Whenever we are in town we make a stop in. They also sell German goods, so if youre looking for the large bottles of Maggie like our Omas used, this is also your place for that 😜 I recommend the Cuban sandwich on crusty bread! 💚
From the moment you arrive in that restaurant they give you a great feeling. Very congenial stuff, it is a lovely restaurant to enjoy with buddies or with your date. delicious cooking, specialist chief cook and stuff, modest cost and courteous service. Warmly recommended.
Home town favorite. Specialty sandwiches, subs, soups, sandwiches eat in, and carry out. Specialty meats, some international, treats, and spirits, along with all your regular delights. Lunch time the busiest. The parking lot offers free parking, yet is often filled while adaquiet street parking on the curb youll find no problem visiting Charlies. Nice people, great food, and friendly atmosphere. Oh! Potatoes soup, cabbage rolls just so much 5 stars for Charlies.
Rob & Becky sold the place & they said they kept Becky recipes but not the same. Ham wasnt like Becky made it in her recipe, cabbage rolls rice was not cooked. Hard rice. Very disappointed in the whole meal. Sorry to the new owners but you have a lot of work to do. Good luck guys.
Such good sandwiches and the German potato salad is delicious! Its easier to take good to go, but you can dine in. You can also get great bread! Also a convenience store if you just need a drink or some candy. Its not open late, but its sooo good if youre out during the day! Parking isnt ideal, but you can usually find something on a side street. Worth it!
Really disappointed me and my husband used to go there at least once a week to order Cubans. Definitely have not enjoyed our sandwichs the last few times that weve been in there. Weve figured out if the owner isnt there making the sandwiches theyre not getting made properly, theyre always something wrong. We both got Cubans today an both had a larger then normal pile of meat. Mine though was on the end piece of the bread and the top was put on backwards and was so small and thin I couldnt even eat my sandwich, it was so messy. it was just a pile of meat being held together by the cheese. The slices of pickles was a tad discolored and didnt look appetizing either. I havent complained for a while because I figured it was by chance but we was in a hurry and had estimates to go do
Rod and Becky- love you guys. It is so good to have you in the neighborhood. The lines are long here for a couple of reasons: 1) Its probably lunch time when you go there and 2) their food is that good. Do yourself a favor and download their menu from their website and call in your order. They will appreciate it and your wait time will be reduced in half.As for the comments about rude staff, I know that when they are slammed, tempers can get short but Im sure that its not directed at any one specific person unless they are deserving of it. Besides that, anyone can have a bad day and deserve a second chance. They have catered lunches and events for us (Globe Motors) in the past, and there is never any complaints about the food except why didnt I get one of those brownies. You snooze - you lose!My favorite sandwich is their U2 on wheat, toasted with spicy mustard. Great blend of flavors. Its a little messy but worth every bite. Honorable mentions include the Yipee-Ki-Yay, Smokey the Bear, Cuban, and the Mariachi.
I have been here 7 times in the past 5 weeks, and each time I was extremely satisfied. The sandwiches are great, the pastas and potatoes are great, the staff is just fine, and even during long lines for the lunch rush I was in and out in 5 minutes. This place is awesome. Thank you, Charlies, you guys are wonderful.
Customer service is horrible no greeting when you walk in I stood at the register ready to pick up my food with nobody in line and still waited ten minutes before they even asked if I need help as I watched them make food while I was standing there anything hot goes straight into the microwave they don’t hide it or nothing just pops it in and they call it homemade !!!!
It really doesnt get any diveyer than Charlies. But this is hands down the best sandwhich place I know of in Dayton. My go-to is the Mariachi. Ive never tasted a sandwhich to compare it with. Shaved beef, cheese, sour cream, peppers, all toasty and warm in a rye sub bun. . .My next favorite is the Cuban. But really the selection of sandwiches and possible fillings is so huge I dont know how anyone couldnt find something that suits them there. They also have salads, soups, a large selection of chips and munchies, some junk food and sodas and beers. Oh and imported food in the back (not sure from what country). You can eat in the back room too, but Ive always taken my order to go.
Best dang cabbage rolls in Dayton! There is nothing that warms the soul in the dead of winter like one of Beckys Cabbage Rolls. They are warm, well seasoned, and the sauce is tomato-incredible. The other nice thing is this is not their first rodeo when sending rolls to go. When you get to the counter hey have them packaged nicely so you dont have to worry about juicing your car by the time you reach your destination. The ambience is nill, while the service is quite comical. One word of advice, if your in a hurry...call ahead. It gets rocking in there from 11-12!
I am the new owner here at Charlies, I have spent the last few months learning the business. I am trying to do everything the same way it has always been done. If anyone has had a bad experience here please give me an opportunity to make it up to you. I try to treat every customer like they are the only customer, but sometimes that is not possible. I am open to any complaints but I would love for them to come to me because I WILL make it right!!!
This place is AWFUL!! The meat is low grade and greasy. The employees are rude and disrespectful. We have ate there twice, first time was tolerable. The second time I got sick and they messed up our order on our overpriced subs. Save your money for a place that is worth it.
This deli is outstanding in customer service and there food is among the best Ive have since moving g to Dayton thier pricing is also very reasonable nothing but smiles for this family ran and oriented carryout n caterer.i will make it a permanent part of my to do list.
Charlies Deli is the best they have a great menu the problem is the lines for food start forming at 10:45 its best to get a menu and call your order in early because by 11:30 there will be a line 10 people deep waiting to order and to pick up their sandwiches they have a very nice dining room in the back where you can sit down and eat your lunch many people get their food to go they just have outstanding deli sandwiches

2022-05-16I do not remember seeing tables, but I was taking mine to go. Plenty of sandwich choices with plenty of meat. A little tight inside but one of those hole in the wall best kept secrets places..unusual hours so be aware of that. My wife liked my leftovers and would eat there again.

2021-07-16Stopped in again this week for their Burger Week Gatlin-Burger. It is sooo good. Onion bun with black raspberry jam, pepper Jack cheese, bacon, & sauteed onions. They also have tons of different sandwiches, cabbage rolls and deli salads.

2021-06-30This is about a 23 minute drive for me and totally worth it! Small, unassuming deli thats been in business 57 years! In old North dayton. The list of sandwiches and other options is almost overwhelming- mainly because everything sounds delicious! Order at the deli, pick up at the counter. I went with the cuban, German potato salad and the chicken spaetzle soup (to take home). The food did not disappoint! Omg. So fresh, so delicious and so messy! Get extra napkins! Everyone working was busy busy and super friendly. We stayed and ate in the back. They also have a nice selection of German beers! DEFINITELY WILL BE BACK!! Love this place.

2018-06-26Support this local business and be rewarded with tons of incredible, delicious deli sandwiches. You could go to Subway or Penn Station like a chump, or get over to Charlies for more variety and more flavor! I recommend the Reuben and the Hatch! There are also several imported German beers and boxed and canned sweets and ingredients. Yummm!

2022-05-19Phenomenal food. Love the tortilla soup or a cheeseburger with bacon and a delicious egg. The beer selection is very good, too.
