Had a party of 14 on a very busy Saturday. Seating wait was not too long @ 15 minutes. Waitress was awesome taking care of all of us. Didnt have to ask for anything but ketchup, and there were 4 children . She was one of the best servers we have had. Thank you for making our dinner more enjoyable Gina
From the start of walking in the door, every person we came in contact with was friendly, kind and personable (my husband talks to everyone so he made his rounds!). The food was fantastic, for adults and kids! We drove an hour to get there and will certainly keep this gem in the dinner rotation. We can’t wait to go back!
Service was quick once we got seated, which did take a little while as they were very busy (for good reason!) on Friday night. They should have had a sign telling you where to go to tell the hostess and your party (it wasnt right at the door). My boyfriend and I both got fettuccine Alfredo, but he had chicken with his. Salad was good, bread was fine (perhaps better if it was warm, especially since the butter was cold). The absolute star, however, was the fettuccine, which was amazing! Normally with the other notes I had, I would give 4 stars rather than 5, but the fettuccine was divine and it alone was worth more than 5 stars.Really want to go back and try some of their other food. My boyfriend had never been here before, but I used to go to MVR when I went to YSU. Highly recommend!
Just leaving the rehearsal dinner we had for my son and his bride. It was a wonderful evening. The MVR was an amazing host. First, the food was incredible and was ready right on time. The atmosphere was perfect. There was a huge bocci tournament going on outside but it didn’t impact our event at all! I really can’t understand how they did that! The staff was very attentive and very kind. We were actually able to relax tonight. Thank you Joe and your amazing staff.
I saw a description of this spot online and asked to go check it out with my boyfriend, a Youngstown native. He smiled and said sure! The place is so wonderfully welcoming and obviously just steeped in Youngstown history and community in the best of ways. We waited 20 minutes at the bar for a table. Our friendly waitress recommended the spicy Alfredo pasta, and the tortellini. So, we both got the tortellini and a side of meatballs. It was a bit of a wait, but they were really busy. The salads were very good, cold and fresh with excellent Italian dressing. My boyfriend loved the tortellini sauce. I wasnt a big fan, but I could tell by the meatballs in marinara that I just needed to try a different dish to be very happy. I will be back!
I have NEVER had a bad meal here. Whenever I want to have an event or introduce friends to Youngstown food, I come here. They treat you like family, potions are generous and the atmosphere is pure home! My friends from out of town always ask to return.Meatballs are so tender, Tressel Tortellini is super tasty and the greens are a garlic lovers dream.
We had our son’s graduation party here and Joe and the rest of his staff did a tremendous job hosting our friends and family. Joe and his staff were very helpful and accommodating to all of our needs. The food was delicious as always and it’s a great environment, with indoor and outdoor areas to congregate. Would recommend to anyone for just dinner and drinks or if you have a party you would like to host. Well done MVR! Thank you for treating us like family and for your unmatched hospitality!!
We had a great dining experience at Casseses MVR last week. This was a recommendation from a friend and we were not disappointed. Joe, the owner, is very available and checked in on us multiple times, even making some recommendations before we ordered. The food is absolutely top notch with huge portions and came out piping hot. I had the Spicy Bow Ties with blackened chicken and was not disappointed. Additionally, the Italian Greens and Hot Peppers Monica were OUTSTANDING! After dinner, you can go outside to the bar and watch some Bocce. These players are pretty serious and bring it to the courts. I saw a tape measure on multiple occasions. Thats some game.Overall, Id absolutely recommend Casseses MVR. Outstanding food, service, and fun. Thanks for a great experience, Joe!
Usually very busy, but with exceptional value and quality, it is one of my top picks for the best Italian cuisine in the area. Mind you, an area saturated with rich Italian heritage and cuisine. Their menu is large, consisting of handhelds, salads, and entree pasta selections, all amazing in their own right. I tend to lean towards the Raging Cajun Ravioli. A taste in and of its own that makes your nose run a bit, but packed with existential flavor so you savor ever bite. Also, an homage to the great college football coach, Jim Tressel, the Tressel Tortellini is a fantastic choice. Overall your cant go wrong with any selection in my opinion.
Stopped in this restaurant about a year ago.Nice friendly place...service good...prices reasonable.......But was disappointed with the food.I ordered a pepper & egg sandwich. It wasawful...tasted like some sort of dried orpowered egg substitute was used...includingfalse -tasting green pepper...very tastelessoverall. Spaghetti was mediocre. Its an OKcasual place.....just skip the pepper & eggsandwich. Who doesnt know how to scramblean egg???? 🤒
Excellent Service! Youngstown comfort food at its finest! My mother, my daughter and myself decided to treat ourselves to a nice dinner out. Living in Pittsburgh, it is difficult to find restaurants that are able to offer dine in service. We were not disappointed! Our server was wonderful and fast and very caring. Our dinners were delicious. Fried zucchini, chicken parmigiana and their Three Pepper Chicken over Linguine were all worth writing home about! Even the owner stopped by to see how everything was going. Please support this local business. It is what makes our country great and you wont be disappointed with the quality of food and how wonderful you will be treated - like family! The only downside is that I dont live closer! Cheers MVR! I will see you again real soon!
This was our third visit to Casseses which weve enjoyed every time. But this time was really busy. Different than during covid restrictions. Our waitress this time was exceptional! Her name was Brooke. She was so busy, but kept it all together. She kept everyone updated on their orders and never lost her personality. Great!
This is in response to Arabella Boggs one star review. I was a witness to her antics the entire evening. She requested a table outside and the owner nicely and politely told her multiple times that the wait would be long for outside. He offered her inside seating multiple times. She had clearly never been to the MVR before and thought that every time the owner sent someone outside to the outside bar to grab a drink while they wait for a table that he was seating people ahead of her.I heard her ask the bartender if the owner was just messing with her and purposely not seating her and the bartender said absolutely not it is packed outside theres no open seats. The final straw was when this family sent their 10-year-old up to the owner and had him question why so many people were going outside ahead of them. The owner nicely asked the lady to follow him so he could show her there was no seats and she just yelled at him and said they were going to leave and he said that was probably for the best. After she finally left the building customers kept coming up to him thanking him for getting rid of her because she was so obnoxious. Its truly unfair that people like her get to leave negative reviews about businesses.
After reading the nasty response from not even the mother, but her own daughter that is having to speak for her, I am mind blown. If I was that hungry, I would’ve taken up on the owner’s several offers of sitting inside rather than outside...I mean isn’t that the obvious thing to do if your that hungry the track meet? As a customer tonight, I waited PATIENTLY for an hour and got sat. I was hungry too, along with everyone else waiting was hungry. Y’all weren’t the only ones in the restaurant, but you need to learn patience and not continuously ask when you will be sat. If you were that hungry and didn’t want to wait, you should’ve chosen fast food. The owner is a wonderful person and most definitely did not “ferociously hiss” at you, he is not an animal lol. Learn how to spell too.
I had the rajun cajun ravioli with blackened chicken. I would have enjoyed the ravioli more if there was less sauce all over it. It had good flavor though. Our waitress was terrible, it took her 20 min to get over to our table to greet us, then she brought our salads out 5 minutes before our food among other things but that wont keep me from coming back. My husband had the diablo chicken and it wasnt as spicy as he hoped it was going to be. The greens were tasty! Bocce and the bar outside are what make this place really fun. I enjoy a good game of bocce and some drinks with friends and family.
Y’all- This Is The Best place to eat, drink and entertain family & friends! The food is fantastic (Tressler’s Tortellini and Smokey Hollow Pizza - delicious) Thank You Joe C. - Jill, Karen, Nick and Brooke for fantastic service and hospitality during our Marty Moran Family & Friends Get Together!!Warm Regards-The North Carolina Morans
Good service, but I didn’t care for the food. Salad was plain and the Italian dressing lacked flavor. I probably would have enjoyed my meal more if it included pasta, but for 12.99 for plain tasting chicken and asparagus it didn’t seem worth it. The sauce was good though.
One of the best Italian places I’ve been too. I’m in town for work and I decided to give this place a try. My coworkers wanted Italian food, so this place popped up. I made a good choice. My entire experience was great. The food is hands down, delicious. I tried the 5 Cheese White Pizza and Stuffed Shells. The servers are wonderful.
Menu has much to offer, selections galore. Tasty sauces. Traditional Italian dishes made with high quality ingredients. Delicious spicy choices that are created by their ingenious chefs. Ive dined here MANY times and have always left with a full belly and a smile on my face! Service is fast, friendly and attentive. Great Lenten dishes to choose from. Treat yourself and give them a try, youll surely return and become a regular too!
In my family we have a vegetarian, a very picky eater, & my husband & I are experienced in the art of cooking so to say. ;) Every meal we each tried was cooked to perfection, visually appealing, & the taste delighted each of our varying dietary needs. Absolutely delicious! My daughter had the spinach ravioli and said, It was THE best vegetarian meal Ive had in a long time. We will be returning for sure! Affordability is an added bonus for our family too. Great pricing!
We had our daughter’s graduation party there and it was perfect. Jill, Sophie, and Tony were on top of everything from the moment we arrived to the end. The food was excellent and the room was great. I actually got to sit, eat, and visit with our guests. Thank you Joey and everyone at the MVR. Our evening was perfection.
Great Italian food with great service! We started with Caprese salad. I then had the wedding soup and the the Tressel Tortellini with sausage. My wife ordered the Margarita pizza. Both were excellent. The pizza crust was really good. Jennifer waited on us and she was wonderful both in the service she provided and as a person. If your in Youngstown and want some good Itslian, this is your place. They dont take reservations, but you they do allow you to call ahead which will minimize your wait time.
Busy when we arrived and our server absolutely rocked it! The beer battered fish was good, but the pierogies were better. SO GOOD. The tomato sauce on my daughters home made pasta and on another guests lasagna was a little more acidic than I prefer, but was still good.
Just hosted a banquet here for 40 people and it was excellent. The food was amazing, the room was perfect and the service could not have been better. Considering the buffet of breaded chicken, Tressel tortellini, sausage-peppers-onions, oven roasted potatoes, green bean almondine, salad, and drinks, there really was not a better deal in town at $20pp total. I was at a banquet here a year ago and remembered how good it was, so it was an easy choice.
Youngstown has its fair share of Italian restaurants and a few of them can even rival a true homemade Italian Sunday dinner. But the gem of them all is the MVR. From traditional Italian to new creative dishes no one does it better than they do. Try the spicy alfredo, there is nothing like it anywhere else!!The atmosphere is amazing and very family friendly. This place has something for everyone!!
Had dinner the other evening with 7 other Red Hat ladies. Everyone seemed pleased with their meals . I was too....I ordered a side salad and the appetizer...Johnnys greens and potatoes. I must say....the side salad was a joke. It was a small bowl of iceberg lettuce with nothing in it but one cherry tomato. I just looked at it and laughed. I didnt complain...made a few jokes about it to my friends as their salads looked the same. Now...the appetizer was huge and delicious. Thumbs up on that but ...seriously....add a few slices of cucumber and some cheese...something to make the side salad worthwhile. Even two cherry tomatoes...cmon...be reasonable...make a decent side salad.
Have had numerous business luncheons here & the food is always delicious. I didnt catch the name of our waitress today, but she was incredible. Many tasty dishes from which to select, I had the Tressel tortellini with blackened chicken with side salad, huge lunch portions!
Dined with a group of 18 people. The service was excellent. The very liberal portions of food were delicious. Very good selection of domestic and imported beer. Very good selection of draught beer. The wine list is very good. Great restaurant for groups and dining alone. Very good Childrens Menu. Outdoor dining is available.
We hosted a bridal shower for my sister at the MVR this past weekend, and I cant say enough good about our experience! The food was amazing and the staff was absolutely incredible and very accommodating. I would highly recommend this establishment for an event or daily dining!
Can’t say enough positive things about the Cassese Family and the MVR. As a former employee and lifetime customer, I can say firsthand that this family cares about their employees and runs a top notch establishment. So many great dishes. You gotta try the white pizza with hot peppers and blackened chicken. Summers are unmatched with the outside bar and bocce courts. Great for a date night or to bring the whole family. Our favorite place to be when we are in town from Columbus.
My bridal shower was held at the MVR this past weekend and it was absolutely perfect. The food was fabulous and the service was great! There was always someone available during the party to attend to anything at all and the room looked amazing. I would highly recommend the MVR for any special occasion, because my day was truly SPECIAL!
The MVR has long been a favorite of mine! The food is affordable and high quality and never disappoints. My wife and I hosted our rehearsal dinner there and the food and service were outstanding. Joe and his staff are always top notch. I couldn’t recommend it more highly.
Had a wonderful day today! The staff was truly amazing! The food was delicious and served right on time! Definitely would recommend anyone looking for place to have a special event to look no further! It is great place to have a family event! Joe! thank you for everything!! We will be back!
Was my aunts 90th birthday party, it was my first time in the restaurant. Food was very good, the service was VERY GOOD. I thought because of the restaurants location near YSU it was a college hangout, but there were more older than college age people at the restaurant, was a very enjoyable evening
Went there and they had a very large crowd. That is a good thing, though, because it means its good. The food is excellent as always, and so was the help. Try the Tressels Tortellini, its the best! Love patronizing a long-time Youngstown favorite. A true gem in the Steel City, just outside the YSU campus.
Me and my 14 yr old daughter stopped here last night as we were attending a concert at the Covelli Centre and wanted to be close to the Covelli to grab a bite to eat. One of my co-workers suggested this place and it was the best food I have had in a long time!! I had the Lasagna and my daughter had the Chicken Alfredo, it was so good I ordered a to go order to bring home to my husband of the Lasagna! We live in Greenville PA and I really want to go back with my husband. Our waiter Austin was amazing as I had told him we have never been there before and needed to know some direction as what to get, he suggested the Lasagna. On my way out the door I stopped and talked to the owner and told him how amazing the food was, he was very kind and appreciated my words.
Ive tried again and again to give the MVR a chance as it is a staple in Youngstown, OH, but alas another meal left to be desired. The mozzarella sticks were over cooked to the point the cheese was on the outside and hard. For my main entire I had lasagna which I could honestly say I make a better lasagna than this and Im not even Italian. It seems like no matter the dish there is always an issue. Ill admit the only thing Ive had that I like is the Chicken Salad which doesnt require that much work.
My grandson and I are in town for a wrestling tournament and a friend told me about MVR. We decided to give it a try. The whole experience was fantastic. The atmosphere and the food was great. I had the Atlantic pasta dish and my grandson the gnocchi. The place was packed and although we waited about 30 minuets for a table it was well worth the wait. Usually, when you eat at a restaurant that is jam packed the service suffers just because of the number of people. This was not the case for us our waitress, Haylie did a great job. She seemed to always be at our table making sure we were doing ok. So, if you are looking to eat Italian in Youngstown go to MVR and ask for Haylie.
We ordered 3 meals to- go. When I arrived home, one meal was incorrect. When I called, she dismissed the situation giving me all the excuses about covid for making the meal wrong. On top of that, all three side salads were brown. She offered to reimburse me for the incorrect meal...still waiting.
Growing up in an Italian household, it is a direct route to hell if you like anyones sauce other than your familys recipe... So, I rarely eat Italian food anywhere but home...because, of course, our familys sauce is the best ever! Amen! But, if I had to eat somewhere, other than home, this is the place I would go. Myself, my husband, and my daughter, all thoroughly enjoyed our pasta dishes. Nice to have a salad and bread. Salad was clean (no brown), just small portion, but well done. They were very, very busy on this particular afternoon. A lot was going on in downtown Youngstown that day...the YSU Arts Festival and the Greek Festival were both very well attended, and both within 2 blocks of MVR. Luckily, service was great! Seriously professional. You would have thought we were the only ones in the restaurant. So, in conclusion, great place, really good vibe, family friendly, fun atmosphere, plus the YSU college crowd...good for any age group or gathering. Certainly well staffed. Food is wonderfully regional, all the traditional favorotes, as well as new and different items. If you have a guest from out of town, and you would like them to experience our unique, fantastic, regional cuisine that resulted from Youngstowns long history of a rich and varied immigrant populations...From bocce courts to the extensive menu including everything we all grew up with: Wedding Soup, greens, fried cheese, and fried bell peppers, pizzas, and the parmigiana, splashes, pastas anf salads. Plus, they have at least 7 different fish dishes! And so on, and so on. Easy, nearby, free parking. There is a nice little bar, just in case you have to wait for a table, and, like I said, really efficient, friendly, professional service.
One of my favorite Youngstown Restaurants, used to go (nearly) weekly when I was at YSU. Tressel Tortellini is my go-to adding the stuffed hot pepper app (Hot Pepper Monica) to the top of it. Its Amazing! I think Ive gotten nearly all of their pasta and MVR Favorites dishes on the menu over the years and its always been Terrific!!! They do really well with balancing spice against the other flavors in the dish. Their home made wedding soup is also one of the best Ive had at a restaurant. They also have bocce courts.
I came back to MVR to give it a try one more time. I asked the bartender what he recommended he suggested the pasta MVR. It was superb. Food was hot temperature the flavor busted with savory aromatics it was so good I ordereed the hot peppers because I like spice they were on fire but great. So glad I came back this really changed my experience. . Strongly recommend the pasta MVR if you like a little heat in your plate.
I love this place but i was dissapointed in the clams with white sauce- lacked flavor seasoning and just dull- and the clams were diced way too small it didnt stand up with the large amount of pasta portion (which i love a lot of pasta) to where i could barely taste the clams. just not good but i will keep ordering other stuff! please work on your white clam sauce recipe_ thank you for your time
Earlier today (11/12/16) I had lunch and ordered an Italian Chicken Sandwich. When my order came it didnt look remotely correct. I questioned the waitress as to if it were correct and she said yes. I cut it in half to inspect, took a bite and realized it was wrong. I received a sausage and onion sandwich covered with provolone. I let her know and she offered to take it off of my bill or fix the order. She came back to tell me that she could do neither because the sandwich was eaten and would not correct my order either which had no justification (they throw it away anyway!). I was charged the correct meal to have the wrong sandwich. I used to enjoy MVR but unfortunately they have lost my business.
Meal started out bad when my husband asked waitress Kelly to pick a beer for him and was told in not so nice way that she had other tables and what did he want. 2 of our group order blue moon and it was totally flat. My calimari was real good as was the meals the others had. When Kelly asked how everything was I asked about the sauce on my veal because it was very different from the calimari sauce. Again in a not so nice reply, it is the same sauce and Ive been here so many years , it is made fresh daily not frozen like olive garden and maybe it was my taste buds. I explained that it tasted like tomato paste as well as the texture. A few of my party also tasted it and said the same. Kelly did ask if I wanted dessert or something and took my plate back to kitchen. I could hear her telling the cooks and again she came back and said it must be me or maybe they didnt stir it well enough but continued to argue with me. I never asked about getting new food. A price adjustment. Nothing. I was just voicing my opinion on the sauce. As a server she was very disrespectful. My sister is a former server of 30 some years and was floored my this servers attitude.i was sorry I suggested the place.
I understand they were busy, but the server forgot to take our order, we had to be back at work at a certain time, and the server/supervisor? Did nothing but give excuses instead of just saying im sorry, what can i do to make it better. My lunch didnt even come out due to something wrong, so I didnt get to eat. Not happy at all.
We had the PERFECT engagement party for my sister, on the MVRs patio, on June 3rd, 2017. Joe was extremely helpful and accommodating. The staff was friendly and organized. We were able to reserve the whole patio, with bar and bocce courts, for 3 hours during the day. The space was beautiful and spacious. There was plenty of room for our 70 guests. Not only did everyone enjoy the food (I recommend the Italian sausage, potatoes with greens, and cavatelli), but they had a blast playing bocce. Definitely a fun place for any party. A Youngstown staple...you cant go wrong!
If I could give this place no stars I would! Went there for dinner last night, waited over an hour for horrible food! The bread on my chicken sandwich was hard as a rock, the chicken was like rubber. I sent my entire meal back and the waiters reply was...I would offer to get you something else but it will probably take an hour. Then he just walked away! Really!?!?!? My husbands chicken Alfredo was swimming in a pool of butter. My friends chicken francaise looked like 2 chicken nuggets with a few mushroom bits on top. Do not waste your money here!!!! I will never return.
My friend and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner tonight at the MVR. Our server was great, accommodating with a smile and our meals were delicious! Living out of town for several years, Ive returned to find the MVR continues to be a highlight of the neighborhood and the city.
Friday July 26 2019 was our first poor experience at the MVR. The fish special was cold and the MGD was not. Had to wait a half hour almost for food to come and then we still had to ask for bread. I can only assume fish was done before haluski. I think next time home we will go elsewhere
Can I give zero stars? Fish wasnt cooked fully. Wife asked to exchange the fish for a pasta and the waitress never asked what kind of pasta she wanted, just gave her penne in red sauce. When we got the check the waitress never updated it to show the cost of the penne. When we asked her she said that penne is basically the same price as the fish. Penne is $9.99, the fish was $11.99. So she basically lost money for her tip.
MVR is arguably the best of Italian cuisine in the Mahoning Valley. From the traditional classic dishes to the signature special dishes like Hells Shells, Tressel Tortellini, and much more, you are bound to find something for everyone! If you like it hot, there are quite a few different options for you to try, as well! This is a place that we take our out of town friends and family as often as possible!
My Hells shells were good. However, my husband ordered the meatball sandwich. It arrived not hot and with the cheese unmelted. He sent it back and they microwaved it which caused the bun to become so tough it was inedible. He asked for a new sandwich and the waitress came back with a new one that she said she prepared herself. It was hot and the bun was soft, but it looked nothing like the original sandwich and was missing a lot of cheese. She tried, but the dinner was not enjoyable.
A lot of people hype it up as a staple in the community but this place is terrible. Small servings, bad service, ugly decorations. Plus there are a bunch of rowdy idiot college kids there. Bassicly a whole in the wall shot and beer joint thats has spaghetti on the menu so there Italian. Worst pasta sauce ever.
I am a little biased but honest at the same time... The food is very good but sometimes when they are really busy you might not receive the best service if they dont know you. It is a very local oriented place and is excellent but if you have never been there go during odd times to let them get to know you.
Honestly, I have never left a review for anywhere. This is the worst worst worst worst service I have ever seen. Counted 8 empty tables, 4 parties waiting to be sat. Waited 30 minutes for them to clean them, still waited 20 minutes to sit after that. Will never be back.
Another great evening at The MVR! Thanks for everything! The Mooney classmates and I had a great time for our birthday get together! You guys took really good care of us. So sorry for staying so late, but we were really enjoying ourselves! The best place in Y’Town hands down! Keeping Carmen’s legacy alive!!
Bocce on a league.....eat here every week! Love the Cajun Chicken Sandwich, Wedding Soup, and New Jersey ali aioli. Tonight I ordered a Brier Hill Pizza with Sausage and Onion with hot peppers and oil on the side. munge! ( Sorry not Italian so excuse my spelling problems).
Went to watch a bball game with a colleague and enjoy one of the few places that has Peroni on tap. Their drafts were OOS, they had a VERY limited bottle selection (none of which were Peroni ha), and they kicked us out at 1030pm on a tuesday night. Funny, considering their website/posted hours state differently. Not happy with my experience and not returning.

2021-12-02First off, I ordered my dish solely because it had the best name, hells shells. The meal was wonderful, spicy enough for a guy that loves spice. Food was delicious, my only complaint was that there wasn’t more of it, I could have eaten a truck load of those shells. The service was awesome even for our large event in the back room. All around great experience, can’t wait to go back.

2022-05-19Came here after the worst dining experience I have ever had at another area restaurant.Casseses was a very pleasant surprise. I had the Coachs Cajun chicken sandwich. Chicken was flavorful, bun toasty. The fries were crisp and delicious.I would definitely return in the future. Nice selection and the service was also on point.

2022-03-19This restaurant is an AMAZING local establishment that does everything they can to please their customer. They graciously took my take out order this evening even with a 30-45 min wait to be seated in doors. They made accommodations to meals they no longer have on their menu and my vegetarian diet. Food was in abundance and delicious as always. Thank you MVR for being one of Y-towns most well known and BEST restaurants ❤️

2022-05-22From the start of planning for our wedding we knew we wanted our reception at MVR because we know the food is amazing. Joe and his staff went above and beyond our expectations. Every person attending told us how amazing the food was and we agreed!! Our tables were set up beautifully for us. We will recommend MVR to everyone we know looking for a good meal or somewhere to hold an event.Ryne and Jessie Green

2021-07-03Food is always great here. Got the chicken parmesan sandwich. I get the Alfredo sauce instead of the red sauce. Sandwich and fries were delicious. Very busy. Usually have a little wait but worth it.

2022-05-28MVR stands for Mahoning Valley Restaurant. This is a wonderful Italian restaurant with excellent food and very good value. Very unique to this establishment are bocce courts, an Italian bowling sport that is great family entertainment.
