2021-04-17Cardinal Mindszenty Plaza at the intersection of East 12th Street and Lakeside Avenue celebrates Venerable Jozsef Cardinal Mindszenty (1892-1975), Hungarian Primate (1945) Imprisoned for life in 1948 for refusing to secularize the Catholic schools; temporarily released in 1956, sought asylum in US Embassy where he remained until 1971. The cause for beatification in the Roman Catholic Church was opened in 1996. He was declared Venerable in 2019, His memorial is on 6 May.In addition there is a statue representing Hungarian freedom. Titled, Freedom Is Not FreeThe crack in the Berlin Wall began with a hole in a flag in Budapest!Honoring those who died in the Hungarian Uprising of 1956.
