Went for dinner in Eaton at our typical spot but they were very crowed with people standing in line. We know sometimes we could be standing about an hour before anyone decides to leave so I got on google to find something close we could head to. That’s when I came upon Buckeye Jakes! Luckily we were sat down when we arrived. Dani our waitress suggested the spring rolls for an appetizer and they did not disappoint. We were tickled to see filets on the menu since that’s what we intended on at the other restaurant. Loved the variety of side options they offered. I got my filet medium with brussel sprouts and salad and he got his filet medium rare with mac & cheese and salad. They came out perfectly cooked! They were very flavorful and the sides were also very good. The brussel sprouts were in a vinaigrette possibly and had a wonderful taste. While eating our dinner we noticed some of the pictures on the wall and asked if they were the house years ago. Dani told us a bit about the home and said we should take a tour of the house and look at the other pictures of the home and family that once owned it. She did a wonderful job taking care of us and answering all of our questions. We did take a look around the home and it was neat to see the old family memories in the pics throughout. The place was very clean and the atmosphere was great. We will definitely be back!
I dont like giving bad reviews but coming from an avid meat smoker the Pulled Pork and Brisket had absolutely no Smoke flavor at all and was dry. If someone promotes smoked meat, it has to have a Smoke Flavor. I asked if it was smoked fresh and was told yes. It was a little after 12 Noon.
Positive: nice outdoor seating, independent restaurant in small town.Negative: ordered medium rare hamburger....served tasteless medium well....it must been frozen...food service brand.. Sweet potato fries overcooked. Disappointed after reading reviews. ..lackluster food a 4 star???
Really enjoy the atmosphere of this restaurant. Went once prior to this last visit and the service and food was great. However, my family came up from Florida so we came in, 6 of us, for lunch and the service left alot to be desired. The food was still good, but the server seemed bored and aggravated. I was a server for 15 years so I understand the job can get to you, but when working for tips you really shouldnt make it so obvious. :(
Unique Home Style small town restaurant in W. Alexandria, Ohio. Known for their smoked brisket & smoked pulled pork. They have a monstrous burger that is literally too big to eat at one sitting. Many tasty dinner items. Worth the visit when driving through or in the area. Nice outdoor patio available.
Poor service waited a long time to get food. Had to ask for refills. Understaffed!!!!!! My burger was good but my husbands fish was greasy and had bland taste. He didnt even eat it told the waitress and she offered him anything else but after waiting that long to get food we said no thank you. Paid the bill in full. We will not be back. We loved coming here to eat.
Buckey jakes will give you what i like to call the “noodle effect” allow me to explain. From the minute you walk in and sit down you are showered in the sense that no one really cares your there! After 10 solid minutes the waitress will come ask you what kinda beer you’d like and 15 more minutes after that you will get a beer. Then you order and are super specific on what you would like to eat. 45 minutes later you get not what you ordered but you get something you tell them to take it off the bill and take it back, only for them to wait until your whole party is leaving trap you right as everyone gets up and tell you they have remade it and ask if you would like to take it to go? I know what you are asking and the answer is yes, they did still make me pay for it! After i had sat for an entire dinner watching everyone eat they still wouldnt let me leave without guilt tripping me out of paying for it. The best part is i go home open my cold go food and its wrong again. Moral of the storry is i payed $60 to go home hungry, and payed $60 dollars to make myself ramen noodles! hence the “noodle effect “.
Everyones food was very good. I got the wings which I didnt not care for the Buffalo sauce but the chicken was good I had the sauce on the side. Wife got the pulled pork which was delicious. Friends got Teriyaki chicken which she liked and her husband got the fried shrimp which he said was delicious. They had awesome French onion soup and great dinner rolls. I will be back again.A lot of people say at times it can be slow service, and I can see they have listened a lot and I can see approvements. I think the servers r friendly, however I dont think they r assigned sections, I think they take turns on whenever someone new is seated. I think that might be some of the fault of a little slow service. I dont think this should change bc it wouldnt be fair to the servers however I think if everyone worked a little more as a team looking at peoples drinks would improve your guys service which again I can see they r working on.
We have been about six or seven times to this restaurant. Every time that we go we are impressed at how good the food is. Weve had hamburgers, chicken, brisket, fish from here and have never been disappointed. Right now is their slow time so there is no wait time at all. Even in summer time, which is their busiest time, the service is always great.
My first time eating here. I wasnt expecting much because I each outback, and Texas road house. The food was great. The steak was cooked even all the way nice and juicy easy to cut great flavor. The rolls taste like yeast rolls made from scratch. The mild chicken wings was mild , and real chicke. I would say place is a hidden gem.
We ate there tonight service the was very slow first off ,finally ordered are food & drinks . Food was fine ,but waitress was not much in a hurry to come back for drink refill & when she did come to see it took another 15 minutes to get are drinks . We do eat there several times a month .while the waitress was taking are order it was like she wasnt interested in working at all. Dinner tonight was early then we usually do . your waitress need to be more friendly then she was . Hopefully next time service will be better .
First time visiting and we are hooked. The food is excellent and the staff is very friendly. My wife ordered the full rack of ribs, and it was larger than expected. The ribs were done very well; practically fall-off-the-bone, they were very meaty, and the sauce had a subtle spice.I ordered the potato skins; one brisket and one pulled pork. Meat was over very large potato skins with cheddar and bacon, delicious. We will definitely be returning to try other items on the menu.
Yesterday we had lunch there and it was not a good experience. No one greeted us and we waited a long time before a waitress ever appeared. The food was mediocre and we were not offered refills on drinks. The waitress seemed to forget we were even there. To top it off, just as we were about to leave a mouse ran under our table!!! Its safe to say I will not be back. Ive also noticed that the management only comments on positive reviews.
The service was fast and friendly, the food was good overall. The kitchen staff was VERY noisy. The ribs are as good as everyone says, fall off the bone, great flavor. BBQ sauce is goodI wouldnt call the brisket actual brisket... it was closer to pot roast, but it was delicious. The pulled pork was delicious as well. The mashed potatoes were real, but the gravy tasted like jar brown gravy. The mac and cheese was very basic and bland (think of KFC/Golden Corral style). The mozzarella sticks, chicken tenders, friend green tomatoes, potato skins, egg rolls and onion rings (sampler platter) were all very good. Ranch tasted homemade and was very good. Sweet potato fries well also very good. The sweet tea was instant and not very good.Overall, it was great and we would go back.
Wonderful down home staff good at taking care of you. The main meal and especially the smoked meat is about as Texan as you can get; that means its really good! There are enough options to cover a crowd of those with different tastes. The decor and comfort is inviting and is great for a meeting of two or a small group.
Absolutely great burger. I cant remember the name of the burger I got but it was enormous! It was topped with pulled pork! Also tried the crazy fries and they were good too. Fried pickles appetizer was great. We sat outside on the patio. Probably the greatest service we have ever had. Kids loved the food they got and had a great family experience. Will definitely be going back to try something else.
We are trying to eat there right now. On two occasions, I saw waitresses remove their masks to go into the kitchen and talk to people in there. Our server brought drinks and dinner and then disappeared I need more water! There is a group of 10 (5 couples) in the next room that think they are at a concert or a ballpark! They are so noisy we cant talk to each other without yelling. Not a pleasant dining experience. Now if we can only find someone to bring our bill so we can leave......
We had dinner at Buckeye Jakes on Thursday, 2/28. We were very impressed by the OUTSTANDING service we experienced. Wish I knew the waitresss name. She was busy but attentive to all tables. Could not ask for a better experience - and the food was good too!!! We were in the middle dining room.
We were riding the motorcycle through town on a long days ride and could smell the good food. Stopped for the first time and ordered beer, chicken wings and the fried chicken salad to share. The food was great. Servings sizes were very large and the prices were way less then you would expect. The vegetables on the salad tasted like they were fresh from the garden. The restaurant and patio were very clean and the atmosphere was friendly. Our waitress was Dawn and she was the best. Thank you for a great meal for a good price and excellent service. Will definitely be back.
The atmosphere was good. The service was good. But the food? The salad was good. The chicken was good but the mashed potatoes and gravy was not. The biscuit was just dough. The waitress said it was precooked but I dont think it was. And all this for 40$ for to plates.
The service was excellent, very friendly and attentive. The food was rather hit or miss though. The fried green bean appetizer was tasty, but its chipotle dipping sauce was essentially pink sour cream. No bite, no real flavor. I ordered BBQ brisket for my meal with crazy flour dipped fries and BBQ beans. The fries were lovely, especially in the buffalo ranch sauce our server provided unasked. The beans were lukewarm and if they werent poured right out of a can, Id be shocked. The brisket itself was soggy and yet still managed to wick moisture from my mouth. The BBQ sauce was quite good, served on the side. The restaurant itself was attractive inside and out, though the patio seating exposes you to a fair bit of traffic noise. Im willing to return and try more of the menu but my first visit was disappointing.
Once a great place to eat ... Jakes is simply a bad house, with a great paint job. I was very disappointed how bad the food and services has become since new ownership. Went out to eat with my husband and from the very beginning of my order flags started to go up. The waitress asked me how I wanted my salmon cooked rare or well done. I told her I wanted it thoroughly cooked I’m all set with getting salmonella poisoning. My husband’s broccoli soup was just cheese soup with broccoli shavings. To add on to the already shocking experience we where informed that our food was actually microwaved. Apparently they shut off their ovens an hour and half before they close. I find that shocking since in my experience a lot of people go out to eat around the time they shut everything off. Needless to say we decided to go home for dinner since we didn’t want microwaved food. Very disappointing.
I ate here last week with a group of people. Theyre expensive, took almost 45 minutes for food and the jack and coke was mostly water downed coke. When taking my card it took 20 minutes for them to bring it back and they didnt get the merchant copy, so they were left on the table. Ridiculous
This was a really disappointing experience for me and my family. We drove an hour and a half down to visit my dad and grandfather for Father’s Day, and the reviews were great so we thought we’d give it a shot. The service was appalling and we almost felt like an imposition to the waitress. She forgot about us multiple times, brought me a bath water warm cocktail with no ice on a 90 degree day and seemed to be inconvenienced when I asked for ice. She filled my daughter’s Pepsi up with ice tea and then disappeared for a long time, didn’t check on us one time while we ate, and forgot about my dad’s beer after she dropped the food off so he had nothing to drink during his entire meal. The food was delicious, but I’m pretty sure it made me sick because I’m dying on my couch with severe stomach pain. Still tipped 15% because I know times are tough, but I will not be back. Ever.
I love this spot! They offer awesome meals, their menu is nice, The chief cook in that place is very trained, I like very much eating all their food. The food is consistently good, the attitude towards the visitors is very good too. I visit often this place and I was never unsatisfied. I highly recommend it.
Fantastic service! Both the bartender and fellow customers were extremely social! Unfortunately, Like the last time I was there, the ribs were VERY dry and over cooked! Rather disappointing seeing I was told that they were known for there ribs! IF I go back I hear that there broasted chicken is good?
It was good as always...but our waiter was new and my husband ordered a cheeseburger that was served without no cheese? But our waiter did go and get him a piece of cheese so all was ok. Then I had to go find him so we could pay our bill to leave. Guess theres always a first for everything but overall the food was good.
Our food was good. We sat on the deck and it was quite comfortable. The only downside we had was the service was pretty slow. This was our first time there. I shared our experience with others who have been there and they said the same thing about the service being slow. We will go back again and see if the service is still slow.
We recently moved to Preble and had the pleasure of discovering Buckeye Jakes. I think we have been there Four or Five times now, most recently in June with my parents from Seattle. We had talked the place up and they were very impressed. The excellent serve we receive is consistent throughout the staff. The food is prepared quickly and is very tasty. This is a great home town place and proud that it is in West Alex.
We were greeted by a friendly hostess quickly. We had a large party and she accommodated our toddlers with high chairs without hesitation. The one thing we were all very uncomfortably cold and looking around noticed that others were still wearing their coats. When we mentioned that it was cold and there , the waitress shrugged it off and said she was hot. However, the food was absolutely delicious and very well proportioned. I would absolutely go there again. Although I might call them to find out if theyll warm it up a little bit before I come. 😀
Was there three weeks ago on a Fri. At 2:00 in the afternoon. Was there for over 10 minutes and the waitress never even aknolegied that we were there. We have been there many times before and have always been well satisfied. This time we had a friend with us who had never been there. Two other ladies who were already seated when we came in obviously had not been waited on yet either so they got up and left. A few minutes later we did the same and ended up at Bob Evans in Eaton. Will probably try again soon and hope for a better result. I guess in all fairness any place can have a Bad Day
Western burger was amazing! Most entrees dont come with sides, so I had to order chips which was the cheapest option. My friend ordered the Smokey chicken sandwich, had less than a full strip of bacon and no bbq sauce. Waitress had no answer to the question of if the sandwich was supposed to have sauce, and asked us 3 times within 2 minutes if we were ready to order. She was not polite, did not greet us, and seemed very unhappy with her job.
Definitely the worst restaurant I have ever been in in over 60 years. Our table was near the kitchen entrance with waiters and waitresses coming and going and talking loudly. The noise from all patrons was carrying throughout the restaurant. I was looking forward to a nice brisket dinner and instead I received something that tasted like pork. We wasted an hour trip driving to West Alexandria. It took over 30 minutes to get our meal and almost that long to pay our tab. For some reason our waitress gave our payment to someone else to make the change and she had no idea who got change and who paid their bill. What an evening.
Our party ate outside on the patio this warm spring day. This is a lovely nicely decorated restaurant in the middle of West Alexandria. I had the reuben sandwich on lightly buttered toasted marble bread with the corned beef apparently smoked on their outdoor grill. It was delicious.
Horrible. Did not care for daily special. Waitress was rude in the statement they have never had a complaint...sorry...did not ask if I wished to reorder..so as my husband ate his meal I sat there the entire time. Worst experience ever. McDonalds does more to accommodate their customers. $30 spent on my husbands club and a drink for each of us. Went home and cooked my own meal. NEVER NEVER AGAIN! Also for a restaurant that wants to maintain a nice quiet atmosphere..the soccer team upstairs did not help..but had nothing to do with the poor food.
Food was good service not so much, the waiter never came back after bringing the food to ask for anything else, 20 minutes later and had to grab another waitress to get a box for my food and find my waiter to get my bill. I would recommend the place, and the outside seating is nice.
My husband and I met some friends tonight at Jakes. I ordered a diet coke and my husband ordered a beer. Our waitress brought my coke and brought my husband an ice tea and told him to drink that while he waited for his beer. Our friends got there and one of them ordered a beer the waitress came back 3 times to ask what he had ordered and brought him an ice tea while he waited on his beer. Two of us ordered all you can eat chicken. They were each brought 3 pieces. When they ask for another leg and thigh, it took over 30 minutes constantly reminding our waitress, first she brought us our checks, then she brought out 3 wings and said the cook told her to tell us they ran out of chicken and that was all they had left. As we walked out they brought a full plate of chicken to the table across from us. I got the brisket and pulled pork plate, both were seriously dry and the fries were greasy wilted mess. I didnt send it back because it took over 40 minutes to get it in the first place. The bathrooms were out of order the whole time we were there, we were told to go to the gas station down the street. We drove 30 minutes to go to Jakes. Our waitress clearly had no training and didnt know what she was doing. We definitely wont be back!
Really enjoyed our dinners, would like to recommend using fresh chicken for your chicken strips, its a waste not too! Your food is enjoyable and we will be back!Would like to recommend Ben and Pete from Miamisburg Ohio for outside entertainment! Check out their web site!
I ordered take out and wait staff meeting at the Buckeye Jakes were friendly and professional greàt to me and had my order ready to go when I got there. Done complete and on the time they said it would be ready . The food was delicious and I recommend this eatery to friends and family. Thank for the update I will be looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Wasnt particularly impressed during my visit. I ordered Jakes burger with it well done, but it didnt come well done. Some of the inside was quite undercooked. One person in my group didnt even get what he ordered. I felt sorry for the waitress, because it wasnt even her fault. I paid in cash, and was told they didnt have change to give me. I got shortchanged almost a dollar. Not a very good business practice...
Not sure how I feel about Jakes. 1st time there last night and I wasnt impressed with the service or my meal . Waitress was unattentive - brought me my salad but no silverware . I had to flag down a different waitress to get silverware. Salad was small and dried up , and my French onion soup - advertised as homemade , had minimal cheese and store bought small croutons . It was runny and had grease floating on the top . I tried to find our waitress to ask for more cheese, and she was nowhere to be found through out most of our meal. The BOWL of soup was more like a cup of soup as well. By the time she managed to come back to the table and I complained, she did offer me something else or to take it off our bill. Then she brought us water refills . She offered no dessert...However , my husbands fried chicken was good as where the wedge fries !I might try Jakes again ..with a different waitress and food choice .
Was not impressed with the food we got today. We got the all you can eat chicken, and my breast was the size Of a thy and my thy was the size of a wing. And my boyfriends chicken breast was missing a chunk out of it. Tasted horrible didnt even finish our plates. Only good thing was out daughters grilled cheese.
The food is great and fresh! The ambiance of the place is what makes this a must stop if youre passing through West Alexandria, Ohio on US Highway 35! Its in an old Victorian House with really nice woodwork, high ceilings and wooden floor! Definitely recommend this place to experience!
I thought I had wrote my review! I try to get takeout here once a week and it is always amazing. All staff I have encountered here have been so nice and helpful and the food is great. I just moved here from Texas in the spring and this is my favorite little restaurant Ive discovered.
I am from Virginia, however, have a daughter and her family that live in West Alexandria. We go to Buckeye Jakes every time I visit. I love when they smoke the brisket outside on their smoker! Melts in your mouth! Also, my son-in-law lost his wonderful Nana and I wanted to do something in addition to cards and flowers. Jakes was so accommodating and did a great job making a fresh cheesecake with a berry sauce and their famous peanut butter pie. The prices were fabulous!I have always had very good food and service every visit! My daughter graduates from Indiana University East in May and we will definitely be visiting!
When you have to walk inside and track someone down to seat you doesnt start off your experience in a very positive manner. There wasnt very many people there, the employees were just busy socializing instead of taking care of guests. Wasnt once offered a refill and the ribs tasted like they was fresh out of the microwave. When you pay that kind of money for smoked bbq food you expect a descent meal not microwaved warmed up food
Tried to place a carry out order. Phone was busy for over an hour...on a Saturday night?? Had to go in and place the order. When I told the young lady who took my order that the phone was out of order, she said oh, guess someone didnt hang it up. Wow. How much business was lost?
Went in to Buckeye Jakes after going to see the lights at Ft. St Clair in Eaton a few nights ago. Went inside and nobody was available to help. Walked over to the carry out side and found a waitress who was very rude. She immediately tells us they are closed, that they close at 8 however, it was a quarter after 7. Nowhere was it posted they closed early, trust me we had about 20 mins to look around with no employees to be seen and no signs on the doors. We told her this and she runs to the back, we audibly hear her tell a co-worker “These B****** aren’t leaving, find them a table”. We left immediately fearing for poor quality food. Would never even consider going back. Shame, I never got to taste the food.
I’m so blown away by the bad reviews here! This is one of those places I reccomend to anyone who passes through West Alexandria. The food is always great and we’ve eaten here countless times. The French onion soup is great, the pies are always amazing. I highly reccomend getting ranch dressing for your salad or wings. They make it there and it’s the best! We usually do carry out or we eat on the patio when the weather allows. Inside is really cozy. We’ve always had good experiences with the servers as well. I highly reccomend Buckeye Jakes!
Love this place. This is a wonderful Spring/Summer location. Always has good music and food. I will say food can be a tad pricey for the amount of food you are given and occasionally we get a server who seems overwhelmed. Overall experience deserves the 4 stars given.
Let me start with something positive... the waitresses (one was a trainee) were really nice and check-ins were timely. Now, let me tell you why my wife and I think this may be the worst $40- $45 weve ever spent at a restaurant.1) Her breaded haddock was salty yet tasteless and her iced tea came to the table with a layer of white foam on it. Her green beans were good, but for $16 it was a really big disappointment.2) My 1/3 lb. Western Burger was 1/3 after assembled, maybe. It was fine besides the bun, which wasnt seared but was tough. The worst part of my dish... the french fries. Heres a good sign... they were able to bend into a horseshoe shape without breaking. Worst fries I have ever had.3) My little ones shared a grilled cheese (solidified cheese) with potato chips (also tasteless, lacking salt). With tip our bill was $47. This was about the third time weve eaten here... and the last. We had a craving for Jells in Eaton, which is currently closed, and thought wed go to what we thought was second-best in the area. Now we just miss Jells even more.
We were disappointed by our experience. Most staff was nice but our waitress was awful. The kitchen made our orders incorrect and the waitress had no customer skills to help. The bbq seemed boiled not authentic and the waitress charged another table on our card. I think they are trying but not worth the price
The Centerville Garden Club was visiting Stockslagers nursery. Afterwards we all met at Buckeye Jacks for lunch. The food was wonderful, homemade style meal. Service was wonderful and prices were surprisingly low for the quality and quantity of food. Not to mention that normally todays prices are much higher everywhere. If you are in the area, you have to stop here!
VERY GOOD PLACE TO EAT AT. NEW OWNERS TOOK OVER THEY ARE VERY SWEET PEOPLE WOULD RECOMMEND IF YOUR IN WEST ALEXANDRIA TO STOP BY AND GRAB SOMETHING TO EAT YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED. BRISKET IS AMAZING MELTS IN YOUR MOUTH A LITTLE PRICEY BUT YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR I ALWAYS GO HERE TO EAT AND HAVE NEVER BEEN DISAPPOINTED IN ANY OF THE FOOD THAT I HAVE HAD A++++++

2021-10-29Why havent you ate here yet? I cannot believe it took us so long to dine here. This place is AMAZING. We arrived at 8pm and were more than welcomed. We ordered ribs and brisket and it was PHENOMENAL. The beer was cold and the service was quick and personable. The space is so cute and quaint but plentiful. HUUUGE INSIDE. We ate well for the price and cannot wait to return! Go Go Go!!!!

2021-09-18Onion rings were a little over cooked, but still really good. Would get them again. The brisket hot shot was delicious! There are mashed potatoes hidden under all the meat & gravy. My husband loved the chicken dinner. The chicken was cooked perfectly. We will definitely be back.

2022-05-20Very poor service, servers all had attitudes. There was only 1 table with customers but the servers turned all away saying there was a 40 minute wait. If you asked for something you were told it would be a few minutes but it was much longer. It was not just us,all customers were complaining. Prior to this visit all was well. The food is great !!

2022-04-16Super cute place. Staff was amazing and attentive. Atmosphere was relaxing. Ruben was delicious. The buckeye burger and avocado burger super tasty. The potato wedges however, were not all the way done. Eclectic selection of IPA. Impressive. We will be back for sure. Thank you to the awesome staff! You guys rock!

2022-06-19I heard nothing but great things about this place so we decided to give it a try, unfortunately its a 1 and done type deal we waited forever for the food for it to come out cold and my daughters bun was hard as a brick and my husbands pulled pork extremely dry and hard. The service/staff was pleasant but a partial refund (because we wouldnt have waited another hour for our food specially since the quality wasnt as we expected it to be) would have been nice...

2022-07-19I have ate here twice now and let me be honest the people that work here and own the place are great people and good host.. they play pretty good music mostly classic.. but for the food my first visit I oder a steak and it was well over cooked.. my second visit I literally was served raw chicken I believe it was still crowing at me.. it was so raw it was still frozen n the middle so if you just want drinks Thus is the place to go but I will never eat there again
