I received excellent care at the hospital everything went as planned I had a locking trigger finger very small incision it healed really quick everything went smooth in the surgery room I couldn’t ask for a better experience then I got with the surgery I hope this helps someone else that’s going to go through this type of surgery believe me it’s a walk in the park thank you
Dr. Julka is very professional! He explains your condition and surgery procedure in detail. Had a few insurance snags but when the insurance clearance came, so did the staff. My surgery was scheduled within a week and Dr. Julka traveled a long distance just for my surgery only. I cant say enough how grateful I am! Had Carpool Tunnel and Cubical Tunnel Release surgery and have hardly no pain! The staff was superb also!! Very knowledgeable, QUICK, and caring! Cant wait to do the other hand and elbow. GREAT JOB and GREAT TEAMWORK! See ya soon!🙂
For a number of years I had pain in my hand and particularly in my left thumb as I knitted or did cross stitch. Two activities that I have always enjoyed. It finally became time to do something about it. Fortunately I met Dr. Julka! He carefully listened to my issues and we discussed the possible benefit of corisone injections. While it had sounded hopeful, for whatever reasons it did not give me the relief that I needed. At that point it was time to consider surgery. He described what he would be doing and what I might expect in terms of recovery and relief. And so I scheduled the surgery for late June. And now just three months later, I have full use of my hand and am able to enjoy doing handiwork pain free. I would definitely recommend him to anyone that is experiencing discomfort or pain in their hand.
Dr. Julka explains every option to you, gives you the choice as to which way you want to go. Then explains what he will do never rushing you to hurry up answering your questions, telling you how to reduce pain after surgery.I must say I followed everything he has told me and I have no pain in my thumb from day one.A very compassionate dr who does not like to keep his patients waiting and will call if he’s running late for an appointment.
Dr Julka performed surgery on my left hand to relieve my Dupuytrens Contracture and from start to finish did a marvelous job! I now have full use of my hand, post-op pain was minimal and recovery was steady. The entire JIS team was professional, friendly and extremely easy to work with, I would fully recommend their services.Brian
I was recently treated for both left and right Carpal Tunnel and Ulnar Cubital Tunnel Syndrome through a surgery conducted by AJ Julka MD, a surgeon with Joint Implant Surgeons, Columbus, Ohio. The left and right surgeries were conducted within a two week period, with outstanding recovery. The preparation and explanation of the procedures were conducted by Dr. Julka and his staff, in a fashion that was easily understood and left a feeling of confidence that the diagnosed issues would be remediedThe procedures were conducted under a nerve block and local anesthetic. Post op pain was minimal, with slight discomfort and no need for medication other than Tylenol.Dr. Julkas bedside manner, pre and post op, was outstanding, with excellent and concerned follow-up.
In Sept. of 2020 I had a very bad outcome from Carpel Tunnel Surgery from a previous Dr.. This surgery left me in severe pain. I suffered and continued looking for solutions to help with the pain and discomfort. I was very close to giving up. Then I was very lucky to find Dr. Julka. My first visit I knew that he was the dr that would finally help me. I would like to thank his team ,and Dr.Julka for the excellent care, companion, and the outcome after the surgery. I am now able to move my hand and living a pain free life. I recommend Dr. Julka ,and he is the only Dr. I would trust to do any surgery needed for my family. Thank you all.
Dr. Julka recently took excellent care of twoHand issues I had. Mallet finger in my right hand and trigger fingers on my left hand both middle fingers. He explained everything he was going to do to correct both problems, he even drew a diagram to help explain what he was going to do. I had my follow up appointment today and both hands are doing great. Aside from being a great surgeon, he’s a wonderful communicator.
I originally went to see Dr. Julka about night pain in both of my hands that occurs after I fall asleep, waking me, to see what he recommended expecting a list of exercises or braces I could wear at night. After kindly and patiently listening to my symptoms and examining my hands, he told me that he suggests carpal tunnel release surgery that would take 5 minutes and only require one stitch per hand. I could choose bilateral or one at a time. I was not expecting this, but the pain was waking me up every night and was becoming a real problem. I looked at my husband, who is not a fan of surgery unless its life or death, and he said to get the surgery scheduled as soon as I could. About 2 weeks later, on the day of my surgery, I went to the OSU sports medicine institute in the morning at my assigned time. The staff was great and made me comfortable. Once I was moved into the surgery area, Dr. Julka completely focused on me, even though I asked him how many surgeries he had performed before me that day. From the time I was sedated, to the time Dr. Julka came out to tell my husband that my surgery went well, was 12 minutes. Yes, twelve minutes. A half hour later I was on my way home. The operational system that Dr. Julka has is amazing. He is able to blend compassionate patient care with a very efficient surgery process. The night pain was immediately gone. Ice packs were the best help for the discomfort in my wrists at the surgical sites for a couple days. I worked at my desk on my computer the day after surgery resting my wrists on ice packs. Yesterday I drove 5 hours and had a little pain in the evening, but not too bad since I just overdid it. Today, 8 days after surgery, I had my stitches removed and everything seems to be healing well. Dr. Julka asked me about my healing progress and explained what I can expect over the next month. I had a couple questions for him which he answered. My 88-year old father has suffered for a over 10 years with carpal tunnel syndrome to the point where he has tingling and numbness in the first 2 fingers of his right hand, but was fearful of surgery. After my experience, he wants to get assessed by Dr. Julka and have the endoscopic surgery. Photo below is 2 days after my surgery when the compression bandage was removed.
I was very pleased with Dr. Julka’s expertise and compassion when I was treated for a trigger finger. Though my issue wasn’t serious I was taken seriously and after a simple injection failed to help my problem, had minor surgery to correct the issue. The surgery went extremely well with minimal discomfort. I highly recommend Dr. Julia and would not hesitate to go to him again.
I had a great experience with DR. Julia! I had recently had an accident where I had my middle finger amputated and my ring finger severely fractured. Due to the trauma of my accidentally so much scar tissue had developed where my surgery happened that my dominate hand was almost useless. I wasnt able to write, play any sporting activities or even grip enough to open a new jar. Dr. Julka helped me in so many ways. He took time with me and recommended what would actually be best for me. I had another Doctor telling me I needed to re-brake my finger and have a ray resection, the surgery was honestly terrifying when this other doctor told me about it. My second opinion was with Dr. Julka and he found a solution with less surgery involved and I am FINALLY able to use my hand again. I seen a change imminently. Dr. Julka CARES about his patients. If you are considering hand surgery, go to him.
I am so thankful for my experience with Dr Julka! I fell on the ice this winter and had a crushed fracture in my wrist as well as 2 more broken bones in my wrist. Dr Julka did such a great job in surgery that now just 3 months later I have full use of my wrist and am back to swimming. Dr Julka is not only a great surgeon but also very compassionate and caring.
Dr Julka was my wifes hand surgeon for carpal tunnel surgery. He talked with us as if we were human beings not just patients. So often patients are made to feel inferior when conversing with experts in a subject. Dr. AJ took time to explain and answer questions until we were comfortable. His confidence and calm demeanor made us immediately choose him to do her surgery. A few weeks later, we followed him to his new practice at JIS Orthopedics. He did her second hand surgery. The results had been as expected and she is healing very nicely. If I am ever in need of Orthopedic assist, I will contact Dr. Aj or his partners first. Excellence and expertise is what is needed with surgeons. Plus someone who will talk to you so you understand fully what will occur during the procedure as well as afterward. This was our experience with Dr. AJ. What a fine man! I can highly recommend him and his team of Orthopedic surgeons.Bruce Roginson
We were referred to Dr. Abhishek Julka for my mother’s hand injury after she fell on ice and broke her radius and ulna. You can imagine how important it was for us (her seven children) that we find her someone with strong expertise in this field but also someone caring and compassionate! We found everything with this amazing physician! He saw her within a day and had her in for surgery the next. He even took the time to Face Time me during the pre operative visit so he could explain the procedure/x-rays and took plenty of time to answer our questions and concerns! Her surgery went well and she’s on the road back to recovery and an active lifestyle thanks to Dr. Julka! Forever grateful, Rachel
Dr Julka MD performed a total reverse shoulder replacement on my right shoulder the first week of April 2019. Seven weeks after surgery I am nearly pain free and able to raise my arm higher, even at this recovery stage, than I could in previous years. After three previous surgeries (by other doctors) that unsuccessfully repaired the extensive arthritis in my shoulder, Dr Julka took one look at my MRI and said I was a very good candidate for shoulder replacement surgery and it was the only way to give me back range of motion and eliminate the pain I was suffering. Dr Julka explained the surgery, risks and recovery expectations and I knew it was my best option. I had researched Dr Julka and knew he had an excellent reputation and he came highly recommended by my physical medicine doctor. Fortunately, Dr Julka not only does surgery at The Ohio State University, but also does surgery at Fairfield Medical Center several times per month. For me, utilizing my local hospital was an easy choice. It has an excellent orthopedic floor. Dr Julka and all the staff that I have been treated by in their practice have been highly professional and skilled. I feel very blessed to have been treated by Dr Julka and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone considering a shoulder replacement or other types of orthopedic surgery.
Besides Dr. Julka being an extremely gifted surgeon, I am most impressed by his level of care and compassion. I suffered a dislocated & fractured metacarpal; Dr. Julka expedited my treatment by making way for me to have surgery the morning following my initial visit with him!! I was very disappointed to find out that I needed surgery, but his encouragement, compassion, and confidence lifted my spirit at the time of surgery and along my path of recovery. The exceptional physical results & seeing that my hand is on target for an early 100% recovery is priceless. THANK YOU Dr. Julka!!
I have rheumatoid arthritis and I could not even open my hand. All my fingers were drifting toward my pinky and Dr Julka fixed it. I had it done 2 months ago and I can open and close my hand now and I look at my hand and it no longer looks deformed. Im so happy I got the surgery done. I didnt have much pain at all since the surgery. I would definitely recommend getting it done if you have something similar. Also, Dr Julka is very nice and explains things well. Im very pleased with the outcome. So much so I have surgery scheduled for my other hand now.
I was referred to Dr. Julka when I fell and broke my wrist in May. It required surgery as well. I have additional medical conditions that needed to be taking into consideration prior to & during surgery. Although all of my medical history is in the OSU system, I went into my first appointment with him fully expecting to explain it. Once we met, he explained that he was already aware of my condition and was prepared to answer my questions. Needless to say, I was impressed! Dr. Julka was very thorough preparing for my surgery. Surgery went great, and 3 months later, my wrist has healed very well, no complications, and what very minimal scar I have is fading over time. I felt confident with his expertise from beginning to end. Just an overall kind, genuinely caring surgeon. Highly recommend!
I got severely injured in a car accident and ended up with an arm terribly broken (proximal humerus fracture). I am so thankful that I had Dr. Julka as my surgeon. He performed an amazing surgery and after following therapy, I was able to recover full motion and strength of my arm. Dr. Julka was there for me the whole time. When this happened to me, I did not know what to expect, but Dr. Julka always gave me hope, and helped me on my way to a full recovery. He is a very experienced and talented professional, and he was always there to support me. Dr. Julka was always supportive, always available. I am extremely thankful for his service and hereby recommend Dr. Julka without reservation. He is the best of the best.
For those with a flexor tendon tear, I offer Dr. Julka the highest recommendation possible. My case was a total success and I thank him, his team, and my occupational therapist very much for the phenomenal work.I was very worried when I cut my tendon. I imagined that I would never normally use my pinky again. (Reading about other cases on the internet did not help with this fear.) At the time of my laceration, my left pinky had no bending ability. It was a complete cut through. I would close my eyes, make a fist, look down, and my pinky would stick straight out. That was January 17 and today is April 26; 3 months and 9 days. I just returned from the gym where I can lift a 60 lb weight in the same hand that had the torn pinky tendon. I live completely normally and have been doing so for about 3 weeks. It was a blessing to meet Dr. Julka and to have been under his knife and the OSU teams care.My sincerest and best wishes to anyone who may be reading this with a tendon problem.Dr. Julka, his team, my occupational therapist, and a great deal of care from my family and from myself got me through, quickly.Best, Trace Johnson
I am a professional musician who plays classical piano and pipe organ. Three months ago, while walking toward the sanctuary of the church where I play I slipped on a slate floor that I didnt know was wet, and fell hard, breaking my right wrist. Not a good thing for a keyboard player! After my wife took me to a local Urgent Care and we were sent to the hospital emergency room, I knew this was really bad! I was very fortunate that the orthopedic department at OSU East Hospital in Columbus, where we went, is excellent. They promptly set my wrist and treated the lacerated skin above my right eye, which healed quickly and well. They sent me to Dr. Julka since I would need surgery to put my wrist back together. From our first visit, Dr. Julka demonstrated a kind, personable, affirmative and assured manner that put me at ease. He explained how this was a complicated break but I should expect to fully recover. This was good news to someone who depends on the intricate use of his hands, including flexibility, strength, and endurance, for his lifes work. Dr. Julka proved to be true to his word. The surgery was a success, and he has been very helpful in explaining the process of recovery during our post-op visits. I must also commend the outstanding work of my Occupational Therapist, Steven Isaac, during the recovery period. Both he and Dr. Julka encouraged me to get back to playing the keyboards, even if at elementary levels at first. This, in addition to the great therapy treatments I received, has enabled me in just 3 months to get back to the full use of my hand and wrist not only in normal everyday activities (including shoveling snow these days!) but also using the full range of my keyboard technique at the piano and organ. During our first meeting, Dr. Julka assured me of his confidence in that he has successfully performed thousands of these surgeries, many on pro athletes and musicians. I can now add my name to that list. I was blessed to have come under his skillful care. The medics at OSU East Hospital said hes the best, and I heartily concur! Thank you, Dr. Julka.James Hildreth
We came for a second opinion where a general plastic surgeon was considering surgery if my daughters wrist didn’t improve. I searched out Dr Julka and we drove 3 hours to see him. FromScheduling the appt, to the updates through their app, to arrival and visit, everything was top notch. Everyone we interacted with was among the most professional we have come across in the medical field. Dr Julia himself was fantastic not only with his knowledge but also his manner with my daughter and explaining what was really going on. No surgery, and even offering us telehealth appt in the future since we live so far away. If you have a hand/wrist problem, it was worth what it took to get there for us.
After suffering a significant injury to my dominant arm, I struggled for months to regain strength, mobility, and pain reduction. I was referred to Dr. Julka about 7 or 8 months into my recovery. He and his entire staff have been incredible to work with. He has never hurried through an exam, he listened to me and after ordering further testing, he performed two surgeries; carpal and cubital release - and it has been life-changing. Almost no pain right after the surgery; and within 24 hours, the mobility in my hand improved SO MUCH! I would recommend Dr. Julka and his Team to everyone! Even, Maureen the front desk receptionist, is exceptionally good at calming nerves, remembering names, and as with everyone on his Team - getting to the root of the issue and providing exceptional care! I wish there were more than 5 stars with which to rate them because 5 doesnt even come close! Sometimes you read a positive review like this and you doubt its authenticity - I give you my word - this surgeon and his Team are the BEST!
Dr. Julka performed arthroscopic surgery AND carpal tunnel surgery on my right wrist. The surgery was a success and recovery has been much better than expected. He is very easy to talk to and takes as much time as is needed to answer all of your questions in a way that is easy to understand. I highly recommend him AND his office staff. They go out of their way to be helpful and went above and beyond for me when I was fighting with my insurance company to get an MRI. Theyre the best.
Back in 2018 I had Tommy John surgery for the first time. It was at another place and it didn’t go well. Then in 2019, I moved to Columbus and was seeking care on my elbow for a second time not knowing what was wrong, and was introduced to Dr. Julka. My elbow was in shambles. He spent three hours fixing my elbow, which now feels better than it’s felt since 2010.I owe a lot to Dr. Julka, Ohio state, and the physical therapists. They saved my elbow. Not only was I no longer able to throw a baseball, but every day tasks were even a struggle. Now since, I have actually transitioned over to martial arts and am competing in MMA with a healthy elbow. Not only was he able to fix everything, he was a great communicator. It’s extremely hard to find people in the medical field who are both intelligent and good communicators. Thanks again for all that you guys do, I appreciate you.
Dr. Julka’s (and his team’s!) treatment of my hand after a kitchen knife injury was swift and skillful. I felt respected and encouraged in my recovery, even though I was disappointed that I needed surgery. Dr. Julka made sure that it was as minimally disruptive as possible, allowing me to opt out of going under full anesthesia for the procedure (which was performed in under an hour with a local block) so that I didn’t spend any more time in the hospital than absolutely necessary and so that I was quickly able to be as independent as possible while my hand healed. He was also gracious about communicating via phone with an anxious family member (OT hand specialist) who could not be in town for my appointments and procedure but wanted detailed updates on my progress.
Dr Julka and his team provided treatment that solved my problem completely in a professional and very friendly manner. He communicates clearly and is totally plugged in to the patient experience. He even let me pick the music played during my procedure... very fun. Highly recommend him.
I have had four trigger finger release surgeries with four different physicians. Dr. Julka has been the best surgeon by far. The incision was minimally invasive with the result of one stitch to close the surgery site. The discomfort post-op was also minimal and I was able to return to work in less than a week. He has an excellent bedside manner as well. I highly recommend Dr. Julka as a physician and surgeon.
After retiring from 43 years in a low-to-moderate physical activity level lifestyle we purchased a small farm. To say the least my physical activity level increased dramatically. From cutting and splitting firewood to rehabbing a 1880 farmhouse my thumbs were really starting to hamper my ability to do the day-to-day work. I was referred to Dr. Julka by my primary care physician. Dr. Julka confirmed that I had moderate to severe arthritis in both thumbs. Several treatment options were discussed with pros and cons associated with each. I pretty quickly decided that surgery to remove the trapezium bone on my right hand/thumb was the best option.I would caution looking at the internet for trapezium bone removal as the stories I viewed did not represent by experience. Many stories involved hard casts and recovery times of up to a year.It has been just over four months since my surgery in February 2109 and I am back to almost 100% with my right hand. There is no pain in the joint any longer. I am still working on strengthening by hand and wrist but that is doing well. Dr. Julka did an amazing job with the surgery and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for relief from this type of arthritis. In addition to the great surgery results, it is really important to do the exercises give by the occupational therapist. The OT supervision and guidance is critical to a full recovery. My plan is to have the same surgery on my left hand in early 2020.
Dr. Julka is stellar to none in his surgical skills and patient management. He not only has the skills and knowledge of a surgeon, but the bedside manner of a friend. He included myself and family in each decision process to ensure all would be aware. I would not hesitate to recommend him to family and friends should their need arise.
Over the past year, Dr. Abhishek Julka very successfully performed carpectomy surgery on both my wrists. For nearly four decades I had experienced severe pain and inflammation as a result of athletic overuse and injury during my college years in addition to the worsening effects of arthritis and other physical issues. Because I no longer could do routine daily activities, including holding hands with my wife as we walked, I sought the advice of Dr. Julka.During my assessment and evaluation meetings, Dr. Julka took his time to intently listen to me while showing genuine concern and empathy for me as a person. I never felt rushed during our meetings. He carefully explained every aspect of my condition but most importantly, Dr. Julka made sure that I understood the pathology by using xrays and manipulative models.Once I chose to have the surgeries, the Ohio State University Hand and Upper Extremity Team, led by Dr. Julka, treated my case with the utmost professionalism and efficiency. My recovery from surgery was quick and without incident. The occupational therapy I received was outstanding and Dr. Julka’s follow up meetings and communications with me were both personal and professional.Because of Dr. Julka’s tremendous skill and expertise to repair my wrists, I can now use hand-tools, work out using weights, and most importantly, I can hold my wife’s hand on walks... without any pain!!Thank you, Dr. Julka!!
I recently had surgery for carpal tunnel on my right hand. When i compare this surgery to my carpal tunnel surgery on my left hand 7 years ago by another doctor, the outcome was like night and day. After the surgery several years ago, i was require to wear a soft cast and the incision was very painful for several weeks. On top of that, in took months before I was able to fully use my left hand. Dr Julkas surgery was amazing. He made an extremely small incision and when he was done, i was immediately pain free. Also, all I had to do was put a small bandaid over the incision. Thats it. My hand is getting stronger every day with absolutely no pain. I was extremely impressed that Dr. Julka, actually call me personally , twice, to check on me. I will strongly recommend him to anybody who is facing any pain in the hand or arms. Thank you Dr Julka again for a job well done.Peter DeBellis
After a wrist injury, I was upset and unsure of the next steps to take. Dr. Julka and his team were fantastic. He took the time to fully explain my options and offered his thoughts on what the best plan of care for me would be. Scheduling my surgery was quick and easy, and the surgical center staff made me feel comfortable and answered all of my questions before and after my procedure. Dr. Julka also called me (on a weekend!) a few days after my procedure to make sure I was doing well and to see if I needed anything or had any questions. The recovery process has been going smoothly overall, and I really have the team at the OSU hand center to thank for that. I highly recommend Dr. Julka and OSU for anyone’s orthopedic needs!
About 6 months ago, I slipped on Black Ice and landed very hard on my right elbow. Realizing this was more than a bump, I jumped into the car & drove to the Emergency Dept at OSU Wexner. They were very efficient and one soft cast later, I had an appointment with Dr. Julka the following week. Luckily, this was before Covid-19 and I was able to see a very busy, well run office. Dr. Julka is very caring and knowledgeable. I had broken my arm, but, I had beaten the odds and no surgery was required on my elbow. So, a few weeks of a hard cast, followed by a few with a brace and a couple appointments with a great therapist, my arm is back to normal. Make no mistake--it takes a lot of determination on the patients part to succeed & even surprise the Doctor, but with the expert care provided by Dr. Julka, I was able to return to my usual life much sooner than expected! Thanks every so much Dr. Julka!
Dr. Julka and his wonderful staff started working on my wrists in May 2019.I had a bone removed from my right wrist and it healed wonderfully with the help of Dr. Julka and his staff. In October I had the same thing done to my left wrist, it is now 90% healed and getting better every day.I highly recommend Dr. Julka and his staff for any hand, wrist and elbow issues.
Dr. Julka and his staff were fantastic. Amy was up to date on all of the paperwork necessary for my workers compensation claim and FMLA. Dr. Julka did a fantastic job on my surgery and follow up treatment. And Jennifer in OT was great to work with - guiding me through the rehab process without holding me back. I would highly recommend this treatment group for any hand/arm type of treatment. Great treatment and great people!
5 Stars +++!!! In February, I had a cycling accident while on vacation in Vietnam and suffered a broken elbow. A week after the accident, I had the incredible fortune to be sitting with Dr. Julka as he examined my fracture. He patiently and clearly answered all my questions about the necessary surgery and what to expect during recovery. A few days later, Dr. Julka and team worked their magic and my elbow was put back together again. I was even more impressed during my rehabilitation as Dr. Julka stayed close to my case throughout my recovery and months of occupational therapy (quick shout out for LeAnn Gaerke, OT!). Six months later, Dr. Julka was there for me once again with exceptional care as it became evident the hardware would need to be removed. Due to unrelated health issues, my second surgery had some unusual complications and true to his nature, Dr. Julka went above and beyond to accommodate my unique situation and keep everything on schedule. I am grateful for the care that I have received and would not hesitate to recommend this talented surgeon and his rock-star team!
Dr Julka and his staff are excellent! I had carpal tunnel release surgery on July 19 and had relief the next day. I’ve dealt with numbness, aching finger joints and tingling fingers for over four years and now I have none of that. I’m so happy I finally decided to have the surgery! There’s literally very little pain after the surgery either! I would highly recommend Dr. Julka to everyone contemplating hand surgery.
My experience with Dr Julka at OSU was wonderful. At the Jameson Crane Surgery center all the staff made my journey through the surgical process the most pleasant encounter I could have experienced . I am lucky to be treated by Dr Julka. After 8 weeks I can see such a great improvement to my quality of life. I am looking forward to a full recovery from distal bicep tendon repair. Thank you Dr Julka!
Dr. Julka and his staff made me feel comfortable, relaxed and at ease. Dr. Julka came post-surgery to tell me everything that would happen and spent time to answer my questions.Dr. Julka has a very good, relaxed bedside manner.I just have recovered much faster than Dr. Julka told me I would.I would recommend Dr. Julka for your orthopedic needs
I had an excellent experience with Dr. Julka who saved me from unnecessary risks of operation, potential complications after surgery and all associated costs.I had a fracture in my left hand and a smashed thump which was jammed between my car door and its frame. I went to OrthoNuro for the first opinion and they decided that I need to do two operations. The first is to remove the nail and clean up to prevent potential infection and the second is to install a plate and screws in the hand to fix the bone fracture.I went for a second opinion with Dr. Julka and he advised me not to do anything in my finger and no need for an operation in the hand. He recommended to come back in a month to watch the progress of the healing of the hand since the fracture was more than 1.5 month.Dr. Julka was absolutely right. The thump nail fell off and the new nail came out. After the 4 weeks, the fracture is healing very well and the hand is fully functional. Thanks Dr, Julka for saving me from doing unnecessary operation and preventing all associated risks for operations. For sure, Dr. Julka is a man that you can trust on your health
Dr. Julka and his entire team provide outstanding professional service. I could not have been made to feel more comfortable when I had to have surgeries for broken wrist and carpal tunnel. Dr. Julkka performed both surgeries with great skill, helped me deal with rehab, and explained everything I needed to know about my procedures and recovery. All the staff in the Hand Clinic at OSU really seemed to care about my comfort and healing. My OT Leann Gaerke was so skilled and compassionate that I always looked forward to sessions and felt better afterwards. I would not hesitate to recommend this provider very highly.
I am very thankful for Dr. Julka and his abilities. On March 23 I was involved in a very serious motorcycle accident that left my hand and wrist in dismay. When I arrived I had severe fractures in both ulna and radius, severe enough that both had broken thru the skin on my right arm. Dr. Julka and staff went to work and were able to get a plate and multiple screws fixed to the wrist to repair the breakage. I was very happy to hear he was able to repair the breakage and I was even more happy with his work during my rehabilitation. The range of motion and flexibility I was able to retain after such an intense fracture is mind boggling. His work has proven to be top notch and his follow up is impeccable.
I am very pleased with the carpal tunnel release surgery on my right hand performed by Dr. Julka. I was able to return to work the very next day and have had very little side effects. I need to have the carpal tunnel release surgery on my left hand and will definitely go back to him for that and will also refer him to friends and family. Also, everyone at the surgery center went out of their way to be friendly and make me comfortable. I appreciate that. Job well done by all.
My experience with Dr.Julka was amazing! I couldnt of asked for a more respectful, nice and concerning Dr. I had a surgery done 2 and half year ago and it didnt do the greatest. So I was referred to Dr. Julka and he looked at my hand and did x-ray and seen I was in severe pain and I had limited use of it. So he did the surgery I needed and now I can use my hand even just after 1 month. By 2 months I could do so much that I couldnt do 1 year ago. Thank you Dr. Julka for giving me the opportunity of meeting you and giving me the use of my hand back.
Dr. Julka and the team at the hand center have been incredible with my treatment. My story is below, general overall experience is at the end! Background: I am a 26 year old full time floor RN who enjoys moderately difficult yoga as exercise around 3x a week and repetitive paper crafting in my free time around 1-2x a week. I started to have pain in my right dorsal (top middle area) wrist so I made an appointment with the hand clinic and stopped doing yoga and any extensive crafting. My appointment was 5 weeks later due to some unforeseen family things and needing to push back my appointment - getting an appointment was not an issue! Dr. Julka ruled out other causes of pain with an XR and formally diagnosed me with dorsal impingement syndrome, which fit my description of pain when I applied pressure in either hyperextension or hyperflexion of my wrist. A cortisone shot seemed to help for a time. Dr. Julka was out of town for a conference when I went back to work after resting my wrist for a week post cortisone. I was 8 hours into my shift and I was struggling through a sudden onset of severe numbness and pain in my forearm. NP DiMeo called me that day and was able to get me in to see her the next day. My pain had subsided because I left work and stopped the activities causing my pain, you can imagine that nurses hands and arms are always busy! Based on my presentation, an MRI and EMG were ordered. I was told to take off work to rest it to avoid further damage and pain to what we thought could be a nerve injury. Unfortunately I was unable to schedule my testing until 2 weeks later. I had rested my arm that entire time and symptoms only arose when I started use again. My MRI and EMG were both normal. I wasn’t surprised by this because rest had helped alleviate my symptoms, but I was very concerned about what would happen as soon as I started going about my normal life again. Dr.Julka confirmed when I went in for my follow up a few days after my testing. Use-induced irritation to the nerve is indicative of cubital tunnel syndrome, mild disease in my case (no permanent damage to the nerve, yay!) but symptoms were severe (horrible 8/10 pain at work, mild to moderate pain intermittently throughout day to day activities even with frequent rest). Dr. Julka made me feel validated in my thoughts and fears and confirmed that medicine is not always about tests showing a positive or a negative. He listened to my story and my experience. I could have waited to have the procedure because there was no permanent damage, which is wonderful. However, I had already spent 3 weeks off work, a total for 4 all together at that point. Dr. Julka understood that it was a priority for me to get back to my job ASAP. We decided to proceed with surgery - decompression of the ulnar nerve. He explained the risks and benefits, he instilled confidence in his success rate with the procedure and explained the process in which it would happen from start to finish. The surgery went very well, I was most nervous about the nerve block, the team reassured me that medication would make the procedure quick and easy, they were right - I didn’t even remember it being done! I only required 1 pill of the extra pain medication during the period of the nerve block wearing off. My follow up with Dr. Julka 2 weeks post op was quick - my suture/stitch was removed with ease and I’m feeling great! The scar is literally almost non-existent which is amazing. My dorsal wrist pain is still present with those extreme movements (like a push-up) but we discussed ways to combat this with modifications and I would feel comfortable coming back to Dr. Julka anytime if I needed to, for that or any other upper extremity issue I may have.If you made it this far, thank you for listening to my story! Overall, I would highly recommend Dr. Julka, he is personable, knowledgeable, and an excellent surgeon.
Dr Julka and his staff were awesome and helped to save my arm/life after another smaller hospital diagnosed me wrong telling me to just go home and come back in a week. This would have lead to an infection that would have spread through my arm and whole body. I tore my bicep muscle wakeboarding which caused it to end up in my forearm. It was diagnosed within 10 minutes of meeting Dr Julka and I was sent to emergency surgery the next morning. Dr Julka was able to remove it and clean the infection from my arm as well as making very straight and clean incision lines. The recovery was overlooked very carefully the entire time and I was also given the answer to any questions I had along the way. I have full mobility and use of my arm today thanks to the excellent care I received. I would recommend Dr Julka and his staff to anybody who is looking for medical help.
In the afternoon of Labor Day, 09/02/2019, I fell off the bottom step of a two-step step ladder. When I fell, I broke both wrists. The fracture to the right wrist was fairly mild. The fracture to the left wrist was severe. I broke both the radius and ulna, breaking the bones into a total of 8 pieces. I called my sister to come and help me. When she arrived, we decided this was a case for the EMTs. When the squad arrived, the EMTs asked whether I wanted to go to Riverside Methodist Hospital or OSU Medical Center. I chose OSU. Definitely my best decision of the day.The team of doctors and nurses in the ER were great. However, they could not stabilize the left wrist. They were debating whether to release me or keep me for observation. Then a call came down from Dr. Abhishek Julka. He directed them to admit me to the hospital. I was told DR. Julka said the fracture was too unstable for me to be released. He said to admit me, and they would work me into the surgery schedule on 09/03/2019.I met Dr Julka in the early morning hours of 09/03/2019; I think it was about 3:00 AM. He told me the severity of the fracture. He said it was the type he usually saw as a result of a high speed car accident. I met him again about 12 hours later, when I was being prepped for surgery. In about a two hour case, Dr. Julka put two plates and hook in my lower arm and wrist. My scar is about two inches long, and healing beautifully. I had no infection, unusual swelling, etc.About three months later, I am completely out of splints/casts/braces. I have almost full use of both wrists and hands. I still go to Occupational Therapy twice a week, to regain flexibility, range of motion, etc. But I am able to take care of myself, work, drive - almost good as new.I was impressed with Dr. Julkas knowledge and skill. I am equally impressed with the concern and respect he shows for his patients. Not just concern for our recovery, but concern and respect for our time. I saw him several times after surgery, and I do not think I had to wait more than a few minutes at any appointment to be seen. Yet, I never felt that he was rushing through my appointment. He asked how I was doing, if I had any concerns, etc. and genuinely listened to what I said.A fantastic surgeon with an excellent bedside manner is not easy to find. I am so glad I found Dr. Julka..
I had a CMC arthroplasty on April 10. The procedure did not take long and recovery was roughly 8 weeks. Before surgery I had so much pain I could not even use my thumb. After surgery I use it all the time and am pain free. The therapy helped a lot with pain and swelling post surgery. Dr Julka explains things very well and let’s you know exactly what to expect. He has great bedside manner and is very professional. I would recommend him over and over.
Dr Julka and his whole staff were wonderful, warm and very helpful. I had endoscopic carpal tunnel release. The procedure was quick and easy and the NEXT DAY my hand felt much better. 2 weeks out and all healed and no pins/needles, no pain during the night. My life is better, thank you!
I feel so lucky to have found Dr. Julka. I started having problems with my right index finger 2 years ago. He originally injected it with cortisone which worked well the first time for about a year. However, the second time I had an injection it didnt work so well. I finally made a third appointment with him where after the X-Ray, he said I need to see a Rheumatologist. He also suggested either a debridement of the joint or a replacement. I wanted to try just the debridement first. I did get in to see a Rheumatologist who did diagnose me with RA. The day of surgery Dr. Julka said he was going to use a small arthroscope. Wow, am I glad this is the route we went with. Such an easy surgery. I went back to work 3 days after surgery. I wish all my surgeries had been this easy. It hasnt even been 2 weeks post op yet and I have almost 100% range of motion back in my finger. I also didnt even have to fill the narcotic prescription. My prescription NSAID and Tylenol Arthritis was all that was needed for pain. Dr. Julka takes time to explain things and is very caring. Im planning on calling on him in the future to fix my carpal tunnel in my left hand some time later in the year. Thanks Dr. Julka, youre the best!
When I walked in I was greeted by friendly faces at the front desk. I got checked in and was in a room in 10 minutes. Dr. Julka came in and we talked about my EMG and what was going on in my hands. My right hand was worse than the left but when we checked in with Amy he told her to book more time that he was going to do both hands. Amy got me all set up with my packet and surgical soap. The day of my surgery Dr. Julka came in to make sure I was okay and then checked in on me again afterwards. I have to admit I was nervous about having both hands done but Dr. Julka is so talented I was instantly relieved of the pain I have experienced for so long. My hands are very small and my right hand had a muscle mass that made it impossible to see. He changed course and went in through my palm.Teresa Dimeo, Dr. Julkas N.P. took my stitches out, she is so nice and so funny! I came back to see Dr.Julka for my discharge and Im sad that I dont have to go back. He is a wonderful and talented doctor and if you have carpal tunnel I highly recommend him.
I had carpel tunnel symptoms in both hands but definitely worse on the left. I was unable to knit or crochet anymore due to the numbness and tingling in my fingers. I had endoscopic surgery on my left wrist and received almost immediate relief of the tingling. Within 1 1/2 weeks I was able to knit for short periods of time. If the tingling returned I just stopped for awhile and tingling went away again. Now I am about 2-3 weeks from surgery and my hand feels great. I just have a little residual soreness in the palm of my hand which is improving everyday. Everyone was wonderful at the office and at the surgery center. It was the easiest surgery I every had!
What a wonderful experience I’ve had with Dr Julka. My CMC ARTHROPLASTY on my right hand was done on May 20th. I can’t believe I waited so long to get this done! The pain I had prior to the surgery is gone! If anyone experiencing joint pain in the thumb get an appointment with Dr Julka soon! He’ll take excellent care of you!I will return to him when I have my left hand done.
My initial visit to Dr. Julka occured in August 2018 for evaluation of a wrist problem, with 2-3 year complaint history of both sharp and chronic pain. After being seen by two other Columbus-based hand surgery specialists, both of which recommended surgery to fuse bony structures (associated with immediate loss of wrist flexibility), I sought a 3rd opinion from OSU hand specialists. Dr Julka did a complete and thorough medical evaluation with wrist manipulations and close observation, andreviewed x-rays taken at other institutions during the previous year. Dr Julka advised against surgery and instead recommended a single injection of corticosteroid-lidocaine drug combination into the wrist joint. That procedure quickly eliminated all wrist pain and the need for wearing a wrist brace during sleep and active physical activity. I also discontinued the routine use of NSAID/acetaminophen drugs for wrist pain. That single treatment has given me pain-free activity while enjoying active sports and hobbies (e.g., fly fishing, golf, biking, photography) for more than 14 months. I remain hopeful that a recent 2nd injection of the same drug combination in October 2019 will relieve a recent flare-up of inflammation and accompanying wrist discomfort. I highly recommend Dr. Julka and The OSU Wexner Medical Center, Hand and Upper Extremity Center.
My experience with Dr. Julka and his staff was nothing short of amazing. Dr. Julka walked me through step by step of my surgery. He showed great concern, and compassion as he worked with me and was sure to thoroughly explain and answer any of my questions, or concerns.
From the surgical prep team to the procedure itself to the post-op team, everyone was kind, professional and thorough. At the office visit before the procedure, the doctor explained evrything so well that I knew exactly what to expect. My office visit was on a Tuesday and I had my procedure that same Friday. The pre op team was able to ease all of my concerns by warmly answering my all of questions and ensuring I was informed about evrything going on. The doctor spoke to my loved one after and gave them a lot of information about the procedure so they could relay it to me once I wasnt so loopy. The first few days, because of the swelling, the symptoms were elevated. However, I can confidently say that after the first week all of my original symptoms were gone. Right now, it has been 3 weeks since my procedure and my hand is doing very well. My incision is healing great and once healed, I think the scar will be completely unnoticeable. My palm feels minority bruised but I have no other problems. This procedure was a miracle! The doctor and others involved were incredible!
I had my shoulder replaced by Dr. Julca. From the time I met him in his office until after I had my surgery I was VERY PLEASED ! He was a VERY professional, articulate doctor. I had NO pain once I got out of the recovery room ! I absolutely had none at any time. I would definitely refer him to ANYONE !! He was fantastic !!
I was first diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome at about 30 years old. Life circumstances prevented me from seeking treatment for it and for the next 25 years I just learned to live with the pain. Finding positions I could keep my hands, shaking them to relieve the numbness, stopped riding motorcycles, had to change hands frequently when driving. Even with congestive heart failure, the OSU team found no problem with fixing my issue. So far we have only dealt with my left (primary) hand. First let me say, EVERY person on staff at the doctors office, and the hospital that did my surgery are EXCEPTIONAL!! I have had medical procedures done in many states for many different reasons, the care and treatment I have received from OSU has been without a doubt, the BEST I have ever had. 2 weeks after my surgery I have no issue with the numbness and pain, full functionality of my hand is increasing daily, I cant wait to get the other one done
Very professional and answered all of my questions while giving me a good guide throughout the recovery process. I am an active person and it seemed like he was able to take my position into consideration with realistic goals while also disclosing any posible issues no matter how unlikely. The only way I could have been more satisfied with my injury care/surgery would be if they could have stopped me from having the injury in the first place! 10/10 would recomend especially for athletes or people leading an active lifestyle.
If youve ever considered having carpal tunnel release and cubital tunnel release done, I would absolutely recommend Dr. Julka. He and his team and the facility were amazing. Two weeks later, sutures out, recovering ahead of schedule. Brilliant work by a caring, professional team.
Great doctor with an equal bedside manner. Very knowledgeable and accommodating to my Trigger Thumb needs. Was able to do an in office Trigger Thumb Release which was so convenient. Staff was very nice and didnt have to wait long in the waiting room. You wont go wrong seeing Dr. Julka!
I cant say enough about Dr. Julka and his team! I sustained a complete tear of my UCL of my thumb (skiers thumb) from a crash on my road bike. Dr. Julka was incredibly attentive, listened and understood my specific needs and got me scheduled quickly for the procedure. After surgery, I was in a splint for less than 3 days when he then converted me to a very minimalist, removable brace. I even got to pick the colors!Being highly active, Ive been through my share of injuries and surgeries (including 2 hamstring surgeries, broken foot, hip labral tears, etc). Dr. Julka listened when I told him I wanted to return to activity ASAP, and did a stellar job in his surgical skills to allow me to do just that. In less than a week post surgery, I was running, cycling, and doing almost everything prior to this injury. Not only is Dr. Julka an incredibly talented surgeon, but he is also compassionate, professional, and always available to answer questions. I have the utmost respect for Dr. Julka and his phenomenal staff and highly recommend him without reservation.

2022-07-2810 weeks ago I had surgery on my left thumb for the arthritis. When I first came to see Dr. Julka he explained everything so I would know what to expect from the surgery. The first week was the roughest. I didn’t need to take anything but Tylenol luckily. Then the next 2 weeks went by and I was back for a check up. I got the splint off and was given instructions that were easy to follow. I followed advice from Dr. Julka on my therapy and recovery and did my exercises as directed. Each day my thumb and hand felt better even though it was a bit stiff mainly in the morning. I highly recommend Dr. Julka. He is caring, friendly, conscientious about his work and he’s also precise. He thinks only of the patients well being. I must say, this is the best scar ever too. You can barely see it. In the event my right thumb gets worse, I’ll be back!!Sincerely, Happy patient,Ramona Ingold.

2022-04-28Can’t recommend Dr. Julka and staff enough! Very professional, friendly and explained everything in detail. All questions were answered.Had severe numbness and pain with just everyday activities. A lot of this was due to using a cane/crutch for the past 20 years. My hands would even go numb within minutes of driving or even just cutting a steak.Surgery was a breeze and I was very comfortable throughout the whole process. I noticed a remarkable difference even a day after surgery. Now two weeks out and my symptoms are still improving! Can’t wait to get my left wrist done!If you are having carpal tunnel symptoms, give them a call, you won’t regret it!

2022-05-21Dr. Julka did an excellent job with my carpal tunnel surgeries. I would recommend him to anyone who needs surgery on their hand or wrist. All the nurses did a great job also. The surgeries on both wrists were very successful. Thanks to all of you.

2022-04-16I dont write reviews but I feel that this may ease someones mind who is sceptical about having surgery. I just want to share my experience with other patients.I could not have asked for a better surgeon then Dr Julka. I was a little nervous about getting surgery on my right hand, my predominant hand. I had to have a trigger finger and carpal tunnel corrected. It hasnt even been two full weeks since my surgery. And I am absolutely amazed at how well my recovery has been. My surgery was March 28th and it is now April 16th, and as I am still healing, I have had absolutely no problems. Its unbelievable how surgery is done these days! I had to be at the hospital at 7 a.m. my surgery was scheduled for 8:30. I was back in Recovery by 9, and we were on our way home by 9:30. I still have to have carpal tunnel surgery on my left hand and as soon as I am totally healed and have no restrictions, I will not hesitate having my left hand corrected. I recommend Dr Julka and his team for any of your Orthopedic needs. Thank you Dr Julka!#onehappypatient

2022-07-14I saw Dr Julka for a Ligament Reconstruction and Tendon Interposition (LRTI) in November 2021. This was the best surgical experience Ive ever had. Dr Julka is a amazing surgeon. I have had arthritis in my thumb for over 5 years, it was to the point that I couldnt use thumb. Dr Julka did an amazing job, I have full movement and range of motion in the thumb with most of my strength. The recovery time was three months, with very little pain or discomfort. I did this surgery on medical travel from North Carolina. I couldnt get a Lyft ride back to where I was staying, so Dr Julka took me himself. I would highly recommend Dr Julka and JIS Orthopedic.

2022-04-01I had surgery on my left thumb. Arthritis had developed to bone-on-bone and it was painful to use. Surgery was successful in that I can now use it. Had very little pain during healing and Im glad I had Dr. Julka for surgeon.
